• Can I use a desktop as a network server?

  Pardon me if I'm asking the wrong question. But I am a newbie in networking and I'm not sure what direction to go on this. I have just setup an Ubuntu Desktop. I am planning to convert it to a network server without losing the GUI interface (again, I'm a newbie) and use it to manage and monitor user access to a network with a small number of network terminals all running on Windows. My purpose is to use the new server to filter sites accessed by each terminals, monitor sites being visited by employees and grant access to both group and user-specific folders based on their IP address. Is this possible? What server software do I need to install? How do I structure the hardware? (I have a router, a hub, the Ubuntu server and the network terminals) How do I assign privileges to users and monitor them at the same time? Thank you in advance for your replies.

• Sprite/Tile Sheets Vs Single Textures

  I'm making a race circuit which is constructed using various textures. To provide some background, I'm writing it in C++ and creating quads with OpenGL to which I assign a loaded .raw texture too. Currently I use 23 500px x 500px textures of which are all loaded and freed individually. I have now combined them all into a single sprite/tile sheet making it 3000 x 2000 pixels seems the number of textures/tiles I'm using is increasing. Now I'm wondering if it's more efficient to load them individually or write extra code to extract a certain tile from the sheet? Is it better to load the sheet, then extract 23 tiles and store them from one sheet, or load the sheet each time and crop it to the correct tile? There seems to be a number of way to implement it...   Replaceable parameter syntax for the console object in C#. I am taking the O'Reilly C# Course 1 and it is asking for a replaceable parameter syntax and it is not very clear on what that means. Currently I used this: double trouble = 99999.0009; double bubble = 11111.0001; Console.WriteLine(trouble * bubble); Am I missing the meaning of replaceable parameter syntax? Can someone provide an example for what I am looking for? Original question for the quiz: "Create two variables, both doubles, assign them numbers greater than 10,000, and include a decimal component. Output the result of multiplying the numbers together, but use replaceable parameter syntax of the Console object, and multiply the numbers within the call to the Console.WriteLine() method."

• Unity: Assigning String value in inspector

  I got an issue with Unity I can't seem to comprehend, and it is possibly very simple: I am trying to write a simple piece of code in JavaScript where a button toggles the activation of a shield, by dragging a prefab with Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab") and destroying it again (Haven't implemented that yet). I wish to assign this button through the inspector, so I have created a string variable which appears as intended in the inspector. Though it doesn't seem to register the inspector input, even though I changed the value through the inspector. It only provides the error: "Input Key named: is unknown" When the button name is assigned within the code, there is no issues. Code as follows: var ShieldOn = false; var stringbutton : String; function Start(){ } function Update () { if(Input.GetKey(stringbutton) && ShieldOn != true) { Instantiate(Resources.load("ActivateShieldPreFab"), Vector3 (0, 0, 0), Quaternion.identity); ShieldOn = true; } } Hope somebody can help, in advance... • Multicast in Ubuntu

  Can some one please explain the steps required to configure a multicast in Ubuntu? I have a simple program taken from Internet. I get errors when I execute the client program. I get the error as: Opening datagram socket....OK. Setting SO_REUSEADDR...OK. Binding datagram socket...OK. Adding multicast group error: No such device: When I execute the server program I get the error as: Opening the datagram socket...OK. Setting local interface error: Cannot assign requested address I am using Ubuntu to run the program. I have two different laptops but connected via the same network. I am using wireless network to perform the above operation.

• Hosting a website from a dynamic IP

  I recently upgraded my internet to the point that it is much faster and more reliable than my current webhost. I would like to move my current domain to be hosted at home, but my IP address is dynamic. As far as I know, I only get a new IP when I restart my modem and or router (which is almost never) or when cable one (my ISP) pushes out a firmware update (rarely). There are a few ways I can see doing this 1) convince my ISP to give me a static IP 2) assign my router my current IP to force a static IP (which might work?) 3) set my dns record to my current IP address and update it on the rare occasions that it changes. Obviously I'm hoping that the first one works, but I don't want to pay a lot of extra money (if that's what it takes) to get a static IP address. Has anyone had any luck with something like that?

  I have an PerfectPrivacy VPN connected via the OpenVPN-Network-Manger-Plugin (Ubuntu 12.04.1) and I want to assign a system wide proxy over that VPN. I have tried proxydriver that should do that automatically, but it works partially. The browser says that I have the IP of the VPN, but when I tried to send an eMail over SMTP (Port 25), I can´t connect to the mail server. In our company the smtp server port is closed, but that should be not a problem, when I do that over a VPN, shouldn´t it? greetings

• Running an Application on a Different Domain

  Were I am contracting at right now has a new development domain.  Because of IT security rules it is fairly isolated from the domain my computer normally logs into (for e-mail and such).  I do use a VM to log directly into the domain but one of my co-workers found this command to run things on your box but in the other domain.  Pretty cool. For example this runs SQL Server Management Tool for SQL Server 2008: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\ssms.exe" And this runs visual studios: runas /netonly /user:{domain}\{username} "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" It does not solve the problem I wanted to solve which would be to be able to assign Users/Groups in Team Explorer.  It instead still uses the domain I am logged into's groups.

But what I need is to put this command in shell script and run it like: #! /bin/sh rsync -avrz srcfilelocation destination When it runs, it asks for the destination system password. I know that password and give it manually. Now I have decided to assign the password to an environment variable, like pswd="destination system password". I need my shell script to read the password from this variable. How can I write a script to do this?

  Say I have a group of large meshes that I have to intersect rays against. Assume also, for whatever reason, I cannot further simplify/reduce poly check count by spatial subdivisioning. I can do this in parallel: bool intersects( list of meshes ) // a mesh is a group of triangles { create n threads foreach mesh in meshes assign to a thread in threads wait until ( threads.run() ) ; // run asynchronously // when they're all done // pull out intersected triangles // from per-thread context data } Can you do this in ios for games? Or is the overhead of thread creation and mutex waiting going to beat-out the benefit of multithreading?

• Need help with gimp 2.8 (cpu not used to full capacity) [closed]

  I know this isn't the right place to ask this question but maybe some one here can point me out to were I should place this question (or help me fix it :)). Since I updated Gimp to 2.8 (and let me start by saying how happy I am with the new gimp) I have notice that Gimp only uses 35% max of my CPU power. I have tried changing settings, assigning only one CPU to Gimp (both in gimp preference and in windblows task manager). No matter what settings I choose it only uses 35% of the cpu. If I assign just one Core to it then Gimp will use 100% of that core (which is about 35% of a three core processor I have. Any thoughts? I am using Windblows 7 64 bit, gimp 2.8.0, AMD a6-3500 cpu. I also use Ubuntu (am going to see if it works the same there). Any help would be great.

• Redirect from domain to other one

  I deal with the following problem. I am customer of one domain reseller, which has fair prices, fine administration, and I have all my domains registered by it. Recently I've created a new webpage using a free web service (those sites where you can create a simple webpages with some template after few clicks). This new web page has default address in the following form: "pagename.provider.cz", but I want to use my own domain "pagename.cz". And that is the problem, because the provider would assign domain name to my presentation only if I registered mentioned domain by him. That wouldn't be a problem, but he is three times more expensive then my favorite one. So I am thinking about registering domain "pagename.cz" under my favorite registrator and then making 301 PHP redirect from it to "pagename.provider.cz". Shall this affect (negatively) my domain ranking? Are there any catches which I shoud care about?

• Alt + # shorcut, how to remove?

  Being a World of Warcraft player, I use keyboard combinations to cast spells and "alt + #" is one of the combination, # being the key just before the 1 2 3 4 [...], under "escape" and on top of "tab" (I have a "French(canada)" keyboard). I've searched in the keyboard options, the shorcuts parts and I found nothing, I even tried to assign it randomly, hopping it'll overwrite the real shorcut but it didn't. When I press "alt + #" I have a "alt + tab" like but just for one type of window. For exemple it'll make me navigate through many instances of folder, but it won't switch to another application. It just cycle through the open windows of one application. Help me get rid of this annoying shorcut please ! Thanks in advance.

• How to tweak the appearance of desktop icons in Lubuntu?

  In Ubuntu 11.10 with Nautilus it was possible to tweak the appearance of desktop icons by editing nautilus.css as I had posted in How can I change the text colour on my desktop icons?. In Xubuntu the same can be done by adding a few lines to one's .gtkrc-2.0 as described in How to highlight items on Desktop using xfce?. In both cases, it is possible to assign colors to the various icon states (such as normal, selected and active). My question is this: is it possible to do the same in Lubuntu? PCManFM seems to be responsible but I can't find any GUI or files to edit for the purpose. The default ~/.config/pcmanfm/lubuntu/pcmanfm.conf doesn't have any relevant settings.

• Looking for feedback on design pattern for simple 2D environment

  I'm working in iOS. I am trying to make a very simple 2D environment where there are some basic shapes you can drag around with your finger. These shapes should interact in various ways when dropped on each other, or when single-tapped versus double-tapped, etc. I don't know the name for the design pattern I'm thinking of. Basically, you have a bunch of arrays named after attributes, such as "double-tappable" or "draggable" or "stackable". You assign these attributes to the shapes by putting the shapes in the arrays. So, if there's a double-tap event, the code gets the location of it, then iterates through the "double-tappable" array to see if any of its members are in that location. And so on: every interactive event causes a scan through the appropriate array or arrays. It seems like that should work, but I'm wondering if there's a better pattern for the purpose.

• xubuntu keyboard application shortcuts not working

  I am using the latest Xubuntu 13.04 with Xfce 4.10. I have issues while setting "Application Shortucts' from 'Settings Manager Keyboard Application Shortcuts'. Not all custom keyboards shortcuts, which I have added, work. Some do, some don't. Example the command 'xdotool key XF86AudioPause' works perfect from cmdline, but not when I assign this as a shortcut to some key, say 'F11'. Have tried to Google about this, but found nothing. Kindly help. If possible, kindly provide me a cmdline way to set a keyboard shortcut

• How can I get media keys working on my keyboard?

  Just got a new keyboard, the Microsoft comfort curve 2000, and everything seems to work fine accept for the 'back' and 'forward' multimedia keys. I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and have tried going into system settings - keyboard - shortcuts, then I try and hold down the keys to set the action I want them to perform, but nothing changes. Any thoughts on where else to look? Thanks -- UPDATE -- I rebooted and the options to change the keyboard shortcuts seem to be working now. Now I can tweak the whole thing and I managed to assign the media keys correctly. Thanks to everybody for the suggetions

Is there a patten for handling the loading and the handling of such resources? For example: should I have a class that loads all the data and then call it everytime I need the data?   When I tried searching this I would just get things on equality. When I was reading through some documentation for navigation in Android I had come across something I had never seen before. I came across this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle = getTitle(); It almost looks like something you can do in JavaScript where you can take the first not-null variable and assign it to a variable. In JavaScript I would do this: mTitle = mDrawerTitle || getTitle(); And it would return the first not null, in Java, is this double equals usage the equivalent in Java? What is this type of expression called?
