  • Black login screen Ubuntu 12.04 if WGA cable pluged in on reboot

    I'm using Ubuntu 12.04.1, 64 bits, installed on a Z77 Pro4 (ASrock motherboard), crucial M4 SSD drive (sata 3), and intel i5 3570k (ivy bridge). I have this annoying problem : When I startup the computer, I get a CLI login prompt : At this moment, if I press enter, i get the usual CLI login prompt. If not, here is what I get : From now, if I login using CLI, i identify the lightdm processus, kill and start it : #ps -A | grep lightdm #sudo kill -9 1273 #sudo lightdm and miracle, these commands bring back the gui login screen. BUT It's very annoying as I have to repeat these steps at every boot, and the people using this desktop are not familiar with linux at all! So I tried to figure out the cause and here is what I found : If, when I shutdown the computer, the WGA cable is not pluged in, then Ubuntu will boot on GUI login screen without a glitch! But If the WGA cable is pluged in when shuting down, I will get CLI login prompt... Note 1: I installed linux kernel 3.4, but it hasn't solve the problem. Note 2: Is it linked to the new HD 4000 integrated graphic processor ? Note 3: If i boot on an USB stick (Ubuntu 12.04), NO problems ! Note 4: If booting on the SSD, when clicking "shutdown" button, the shutdown process never ends up (logout screen keep displaying and fans are still rolling). But if booting on USB stick, the shutdown action runs properly.

  • radeon display driver clones monitors while using Xinerama

    I'm trying to get my two Radeon HD 4770 cards working with three monitors. Xinerama works so far in the way that I have two fully working monitors were I can move windows from one to the other. My problem now is that my third monitor is a clone of my second monitor (displaying the exact same thing). These monitors are connected to the same graphic card ("Screen Middle" and "Screen Right" in the xorg.conf below).     I have a report that produces a blank page at the end of the report. How do I get rid of it? The report consists of text/list boxes that are embedded inside a rectangle. The rectangle has the property selected: "Add page break after". If this option is selected the report renders exactly how it should, minus the extra blank page at the end. However, if the "Add page break after" option is not selected, the blank page does not appear, although the report does not display the content correctly. It seems that this option is producing the extra page at the end of the report. The issue is not with the margins. How can the last blank page be eliminated while still maintaining the page breaks throughout the rest of the report?

What is aspect ratio – the ratio from the height to the width 2.35:1 The image is 2.35 times wide as it is high Pixar uses this for half of our movies This is called a widescreen image When modified to fit your television screen They cut this to fit the box of your screen When a comparison is made huge chunks of picture is missing It is harder to find what is going on when these pieces are missing The whole is greater than the pieces themselves. If you are missing pieces – you are missing the movie The soul and the mood is in the film shots. Cutting it to fit a screen, you are losing 30% of the movie Why different aspect ratios? Film before the 1950s 1.33:1 Academy Standard There were all aspects of images though. There was no standard. Thomas Edison developed projecting images onto a wall/screen He didn’t patent it as he saw no value in it. Then 1.37:1 came about to add a strip of sound This is the same size as a 35mm film Around 1952 – TV comes along NTSC Television followed the Academy Standard (4x3) Once TV came out, movie theater attendance plummets So Film brought forth color to combat this. Also early 3D Also Widescreen was brought forth. You end up with more sky and more ground The characters seem to get lost in the picture You lose what the director original intended Re-staging For animated movies, you can move characters around – restage the scene. It is a new completely different version of the film This is the best possible option that Pixar came up with They have stopped doing this really as the demand as pretty much dropped off Why not 1.33 today? There has been an evolution of taste and demands. VHS is a linear item The focus is about portability and not about quality Most was pan and scan and the quality was so bad – but people didn’t notice DVD was introduced in 1996 You could have more content – two versions of the film You could have the widescreen version and the 1.33 version People realized that they are seeing more of the movie with the widescreen High Def Televisions (16x9 monitors) This was introduced in 2005 Blu-ray Disc was introduced in 2006 This is all widescreen You cannot find a square TV anymore TVs are roughly 1.85:1 aspect ratio There is a change in demand Users are used to black bars and are used to widescreen Users are educated now What’s next for in-flight entertainment?   • Snap App Windows to Pre-Defined Screen Sections with Acer GridVista

    The window snapping feature in Windows 7 and the ability to organize monitor(s) into specific gridded sections have both become popular lately. If you love the idea of having both combined in a single software then join us as we look at Acer GridVista. Note: Acer GridVista works with Windows XP, Vista, & 7. It will also work with dual monitors. Setup Acer GridVista comes in a zip file format and at first you might assume that it is portable in nature but it is not. Once you unzip the enclosed folder you will need to double click on “Setup.exe” to install the program. Acer GridVista in Action Once you have installed the program and started it up all that you will notice at first is the new “System Tray Icon”. Here you can see the “Context Menu”… The only menu command that you will likely use most of the time is the “Grid Configuration Command”. Notice that for our single monitor setup that it lists “Display 1”. The “Single Setting” is enabled by default and you can easily choose the layout that best suits your needs. The enabled layout style will always be highlighted in yellow for easy reference. For our example we chose the “Triple (primary at right)” layout style. Each section will be specifically numbered as shown here. Do not worry…the grid and numbers only appear for a moment and then become invisible again until you move an app window into that section/area of your screen. On every regular app window that you open you will notice three new buttons in the upper right corner. Here is what each of these new buttons do: Acer GridVista Extensions (Transparent, Send To Window Grid, About Acer GridVista): Viewable in a drop-down menu Lock To Grid (Enable/Disable): Enabled by default –> Note: Set to disable on a particular window to keep it free of the “grid locking function” Always On Top (Enable/Disable): Disabled by default A good look at the “Extensions Drop-Down Menu” where you can set an app window to be transparent or send it to a specific screen section on your monitor(s). If you open an app it will not automatically lock into a specific section. To lock the window into a specific section drag-and-drop the app window into the desired section. Notice the red outline and highlighted number on “Section 2” below. The red outline and highlighted number serves as an indicator that if you release the app window at that moment it will lock into the outlined/highlighted section. Now that Notepad is locked into “Section 2” you can see that it is maximized within that section. Continue to drag-and-drop your app windows into the appropriate sections as desired…apps can still be reduced to the “Taskbar” the same as before. Options These are the options available for Acer GridVista… Conclusion If you have been wanting the ability to “snap” windows and organize them into specific screen areas then Acer GridVista is definitely a program that you should try out.   • IIS 7 on 2008r2 shows blank page

    I am using IIS7 on Windows Server 2008r2. I have recently installed php and IIS. I am trying to browse to the index.php but it returns a blank page. It loads the favicon and the header of my page. When I load an info.php file it is not blank. If I disable Anonymus Authentication it the same index.php returns IIS 7.5 Detailed Error - 401.2 - Unauthorized. What is strange is I installed this exact code onto another fresh IIS install I just did and it loads fine. Permissions for the directory are the same for both.

  • See all output from commands performed inside screen

    I am using screen (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/manual/screen.html) to access my minecraft console. I created a server in /etc/init.d, and have minecraft running in the background. Then, to access the minecraft console, I just type # screen -r in bash. I can now do commands in the screen shell. The problem is if I do some command which exports a bunch of text, it exceeds the size of the screen and pushes the begging output off the page. And I cannot seem to scroll up and see it. How can I scroll back and view all the output? How can I pause the output (maybe something like more or less)?

  • Wordpress Blank White Page for Login

    When I go to the /wp-login.php portion of my Wordpress site I get a blank white screen. In fact, throughout the entire domain I get blank white screen. Also, I can't even connect to the server via FTP (tried with other FTP accts to make sure not FTP client). Is this an issue with the host or my WP? Not even sure how to fix it if it's on my end cuz I can't even login to FTP or to the Admin Dashboard! Any help = appreciated.

  • Computer prints blank pages before and after content

    This would seem like a pretty simple question but I have exhausted every idea I can come up with. I bought a brand new Dell Latitude E5410 not too long ago with Windows 7 OS. I installed office 2010 on the machine right away and have had a printing problem since day one. For some reason every time I print a page, a blank page prints out before and after the content print. This also applies to any other application such as notepad or printing an email. If I have a 6 page document, it still prints out one page before and after every content page. Meaning I get my 6 page document along with 12 blank pages. I can't figure out why this would be some sort of default setting or what would cause this printing configuration. I am the only computer on the network that has this problem and quite frankly I'm getting tired of it. Can anyone help me figure this out or steer me in the right direction to correcting this problem?

    How many times have you printed an email just to have the last page be 2 or 3 lines of a person's signature (or worse, the "This is confidential" copy inserted by corporate mailservers)? How many times has the last page contained just the footer of the website? Does anyone know of a utility or print driver that can help avoid printing blank or nearly-blank pages? I am not looking for techniques for avoiding this in specific programs -- if I take the effort of doing print preview and then adjusting the pages to be printed, then of course I can avoid it. What I want something I can install that, whenever I push "Print" to any of the various printers I print to with my laptop, it automatically says "hmmm... I bet he doesn't really want that page which is 95% empty" and possibly prompts me to say "do you really want to waste paper on this?"

  • Why is my metro screen getting extended to half of the second screen?

    When I extend my desktop to the second screen, it stays fine for a few minutes, but after a while, the first metro screen stretches all the way to half of the second screen. The search bar etc stops working. The desktop itself shares fine. But the metro screen is messed up as well as the resolution. The second screen is using the recommended resolution. All I want is to have an extended screen. The problem occurs in my office Windows 8 laptop as well. Not sure what to do with it.   • WAMP phpmyadmin gives a blank page no matter what I do

    I've been trying to get phpmyadmin to work on Win 7 64bit (newest download on the site) and I can get it working, the php part works fine, the problem is I can't get into phpmyadmin. It just gives a blank page, even I click view source it's completely blank. I've been scouring the internet for 2 or 3 days now, but no luck. Also, the php and mysql error logs don't have any errors.   • System reverts to 87Hz refresh rate at every startup after I have installed nvidia drivers

I have tried "save to X configuration files" and even tried by making the changes as Root but to no avail as it again reverts to 87Hz on every system startup The Open Source Drivers are Okay for regular Unity but many games don't work on it hence I had to install the nvidia drivers. I have been facing this since the Beta Phase although this is on a fresh installation of 12.04 final release. I am also providing my Xorg.conf file just in case it might help http://paste.ubuntu.com/952196/ Also for some reason Displays shows my CRT monitor as Laptop but on open source drivers it was mentioning it as a 14" CRT only This bug is also present on Edubuntu 12.04 This is not present on Xubuntu 12.04 I had selected to install updates and 3rd party software on the install and was greeted with a correct refresh rate screen on the Boot Up. I like Xubuntu.

  • Make one monitor act like two, split in half

    Context: Ubuntu 11.10, Unity Let's say I have a screen at resolution 1000x500. What I'd like to do is split the screen down the middle so [Unity or X or ?] acts as if there are two displays (each of 500x500). Examples: Unity will display a different toolbar (the top one) on each side of the display. If I maximize a window on the left side of the screen, it will fill the left side only. If I maximize on the right, it will fill the right. If I hit "fullscreen" in youtube (flash) or Chrome or Movie Player, it will only fill the side of the display that it's on. If it's really is impossible to do this with Unity, will it work with Gnome3 and how? A million thanks!
