• Save the dates – Tech.Days 2011 23rd to 25th of May in London

- by Eric Nelson
In May Microsoft UK (and specifically my group) will be delivering Tech.Days – a week of day long technical events plus evening activities. We will be covering Windows Phone 7, Silverlight, IE 9, Windows Azure Platform and more. I’m working right now on the details of what we will be covering around the Windows Azure Platform – and it is shaping up very nicely. There is a little more detail over on TechNet – but for the moment, keep the dates clear if you can. P.S. I think the above is called a “teaser” in marketing speak.

• Windows Phone 7 Development Updates – March 8th 2011

- by Nikita Polyakov
Here are the latest update from the Windows Phone 7 Developer Worlds that went live this month. Here are some of the latest numbers: Windows Phone Marketplace currently offers more than 9,000 quality apps and games and enjoys a base of over 32,000 registered developers, delivering an average of 100 new apps every day. There have been over 1 million downloads of the developers tools for Windows Phone 7. Trial version help you sell more Trials result in higher sales by the numbers: Users like trials - paid apps with trial functionality are downloaded 70 times more than paid apps that don’t Nearly 1 out of 10 trial apps downloaded convert to a purchase and generate 10 times more revenue on average than paid apps that don’t include trial functionality. Trial downloads convert to paid downloads quickly. More than half of trial downloads that convert to a sale do so within the 1st 24 hours of trial download, and mostly within 2 hours of trial download. Microsoft Ad Control is gaining traction By the numbers - ad supported Windows Phone 7 apps are: Roughly ¼ of all registered U.S. WP7 developers have downloaded the free Ad SDK for Silverlight and XNA Of ad funded apps, over 95 percent use the free Microsoft Advertising Ad Control Monthly impressions from our Ad Exchange has continued to grow by double digits – impressions increased by 376 percent since January Ad Control, the first wave of “How Do I” videos are now available on MSDN: Create an Ad in a Windows Phone 7 XNA Game App Register Ad-Enabled Windows Phone 7 Apps Measure Ad Performance of Windows Phone 7 Apps Boarder International App submission for Free Apps through Yalla Apps As of today you can start submitting your free applications in developer markets that are currently not covered by Microsoft. To submit your Free application if you DO NOT belong to one of the Marketplace supported countries, go to: Yalla Apps Marketplace Policy Updates: Free App Marketplace Submission upped to 100 and other news Microsoft has been revisiting a few of our Marketplace policies based on feedback from developers to reduce friction and cost, word for word: 1. We have raised the limit on the number of certifications that can be performed for FREE apps at no cost to the registered developer from five to 100. This was a common request from developers which we are glad to implement after building alternate methods to ensure that users can find and download high quality apps. 2. We have converted policy 5.6 - related to the inclusion of contact information for support - from a mandatory to an optional policy. This is still a strongly recommended best practice, but we recognized and responded to developer feedback that this policy was creating excessive drag on the certification process for developers without commensurate user benefit for all apps. 3. We also understand the desire for clarification with regard to our policy on applications distributed under open source licenses. The Marketplace Application Provider Agreement (APA) already permits applications under the BSD, MIT, Apache Software License 2.0 and Microsoft Public License. We plan to update the APA shortly to clarify that we also permit applications under the Eclipse Public License, the Mozilla Public License and other, similar licenses and we continue to explore the possibility of accommodating additional OSS licenses. Enjoy and happy coding! Official Blog Post for reference.

• The Uganda .NET Usergroup meeting for January 2011 - a look back.

- by Malisa L. Ncube
We had a very interesting meeting on Friday 28th last week. We had 10 attendees and two speakers. The first topic presented was Cloud Computing, presented by Allan Rwakatungu @arwakatungu who works with MTN Uganda. He gave a very brilliant outline of how Cloud computing and service oriented applications had begun changing the platform for operating business and the costs it saves because of scalability and elasticity. He went on to demonstrate the steps you would take if you are beginning a new Windows Azure project. He explained the history and evolution of the Windows Azure, SQL Azure and cloud services offered by Amazon and google.com. The attendees had many questions to ask (obviously), but they were all answered very well. We once again thank Allan, for taking time to prepare the presentation and demonstrating for us. We recorded a video on the entire presentation and after doing some editing we will publish it. One wish which was echoed by most members was that Microsoft should open the cloud services and development for Africa. Microsoft currently does not even have servers here in Africa and so far, that does not put African developers in the same platform as other developers in other continents. Now is the time considering the improvements in network speeds and joining of the Seacom network and broadband. I presented on Parallelism and Multithreading using .NET 4.0, I also gave some details on the language changes in C# 5.0 and the async keyword and the TaskEx class. I explained the Task, Scheduling of parallel tasks and demonstrated problems that may arise from using parallelism inappropriately. I also demonstrated the performance improvements that may be achieved by taking advantage of multi-core processors. You may download the presentation on Parallelism and Multi-threading from here. The resolution of the meeting was that we should meet more than once a month and begin other activities which should be more fun. e.g. Geek Dinner, Geek Beer or CodeCamp. Based on that we all agreed we shall have a mid-month meeting starting from February. Cheers folks! del.icio.us Tags: .net,usergroup,cloud computing,parallelism,multi-threading

• It's 2011 - why do I still have to use tables for email?

- by John Isaacks
This might seem like a rant, but I am curious. CSS replaced tables for layout a long time ago. But we still have to use tables for layout when creating rich emails. Why is this? Are there any other options? Are there really technical constraints that prevent CSS from working in an email. What are they? I can see how linked or embedded style sheets might be a problem, but not even inline styles work. Is this ever going to change?

• APress Deal of the Day 15/Jan/2011 - Windows Mobile Game Development: Building games for the Windows Phone and other mobile devices

- by TATWORTH
Todays Apress $10 deal of the the day is: Windows Mobile Game Development: Building games for the Windows Phone and other mobile devices This book will provide you with a comprehensive guide to developing games for both the Windows Mobile platform and the Windows Phone using the industry standard programming languages C# and VB.NET. $49.99 | Published Apr 2010 | The book dates from the VS2005/VS2008 era but should still be useful to VS2010 developers. Given that such games development can now be done within Visual Studio. Whilst these devices use the Compact Framework instead of the standard Dot Net Framework, it is still a familiar envirnment. This book should be of benefit not just to games developers but to anyone with an interest in development for mobile phones.

• ADF Hands on Training – Prerequisites for 22nd March 2011

- by Grant Ronald
For those of you coming to the ADF Hands on training on the 22nd March in London, there was a link to the prerequisites. Unfortunately, in a reshuffle of content on OTN, this page was removed. So, over the next day or so I’m hoping to the pull together the relevant information into this blog post. So keep checking back! Firstly, you need to being your laptop with you to do the hands on exercises. No laptop, no hands on. Recommended 2GB RAM running Microsoft Windows XP SP2, 2003 Server SP2, Vista (32 bit only), Windows 7 or Linux or Mac 2GHz Processor (less will be acceptable but slower) Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or higher, Internet Explorer 7 or higher, Safari 3.0 and higher, Google Chrome 1.0 or higher Winzip or other extracting software Adobe Acrobat reader Flash (if you want to see dynamic graphs in your application) As for software, you will need have installed JDeveloper 11g. The hands on instructions are based on 11.1.1.2 (or is it 11.1.1.3)! anyway, either of those or 11.1.1.4 would be required. You also need an Oracle database on your machine and access to the HR schema (which should be unlocked). Don’t expect to have access to a network and VPN to a database. A simple test, unplug your laptop from your corporate network, run up JDev and select File –> New –> Database connection and make sure you can connect to HR database and see the Emp/Dept etc tables. If you can do that, you should be good to go. I would strongly recommend ensuring you have this in place before you arrive on Tuesday. Look forward to seeing you there.

• Project management estimating time, budget and product pricing

- by dr_hoppa
I have been a software developer for a while but was not interested in the above topics, currently I am put in the position of wanting to learn more about them but don't have a clue where to begin. I have done task estimations and I can do decent ones, but have little/none experience in the field of budget/product pricing and would want to learn more. Do you have any suggestions of good resources that I could look up in order to learn more (eg. books, blogs, ...) This need arised while talking to a friend about management and he brought up management terms that I wasn't aware of (eg. KPI, ...)

• Nightmare: Upgrading Tomcat 5.5 to 6.0

- by pavanlimo
I'm trying to upgrade a perfectly running embedded Tomcat 5.5 to Tomcat 6.0. I understand that all I need to do is replace Tomcat 5.5 jars with 6.0. That's what I did. So I replaced the following jars: catalina-5.0.28.jar catalina-5.5.9.jar catalina-optional-5.5.9.jar commons-el.jar commons-modeler-1.1.0.jar jasper-compiler-jdt.jar jasper-compiler.jar jasper-runtime.jar jmx-5.0.28.jar jsp-api-2.0.jar naming-factory.jar naming-resources.jar servlet-api-2.4.jar servlets-default.jar tomcat-coyote.jar tomcat-http.jar tomcat-util.jar with: annotations-api.jar catalina.jar jasper.jar tomcat-dbcp.jar catalina-ant.jar el-api.jar jsp-api.jar tomcat-i18n-es.jar catalina-ha.jar jasper-el.jar servlet-api.jar tomcat-i18n-fr.jar catalina-tribes.jar jasper-jdt.jar tomcat-coyote.jar tomcat-i18n-ja.jar tomcat-juli.jar As soon as I start the server, I get the following message in the logs at INFO level: INFO: Starting Servlet Engine: Apache Tomcat/6.0.29 Dec 31, 2010 6:04:18 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader validateJarFile INFO: validateJarFile(/usr/local/blah/blue/./WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class Based on the this explanation, I need to remove a jar file which has a conflicting Servlet.class. I swear to God, there is no other conflicting jar file, I grepped system wide for Servlet.class, it matched only servlet-api.jar. I also downloaded javaee.jar and replaced it by servlet-api.jar, to same avail. Having tried lot of these stuff, I did not have much to look upto, so set the tomcat logging level to ALL. In the log I could see that it is trying to check for Servlet.class in each and every jar it is loading until it finds servlet-api.jar and throws "jar not loaded" message as soon as it finds servlet-api.jar. See below: FINE: Checking for javax/servlet/Servlet.class Jan 2, 2011 7:39:33 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappLoader setRepositories FINE: Deploy JAR /WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api.jar to /usr/local/blah/blue/./WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api.jar Jan 2, 2011 7:39:33 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader addJar FINE: addJar(/WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api.jar) Jan 2, 2011 7:39:33 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader validateJarFile FINE: Checking for javax/servlet/Servlet.class Jan 2, 2011 7:39:33 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader validateJarFile INFO: validateJarFile(/usr/local/blah/blue/./WEB-INF/lib/servlet-api.jar) - jar not loaded. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class Jan 2, 2011 7:39:33 AM org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappLoader setRepositories Please note however, that Tomcat starts successfully! And as soon as I hit the URL on the browser, I get blank page(this may be in my case only, I guess 'cuz of my web.xml, sorta different from most. One interesting thing though, I manually created a dummy jsp file containing only "helloooo" just outside WEB-INF folder(no security constraints for this file). This file was accessible and could be displayed. But, all my jsp's and classes are inside WEB-INF(ofcourse). Sick and tired of this issue, please help me solve it. I've already spent 20-24 hours on this unsuccessfully. Any pointers directions hints leads?

I am running Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS).

• Is Family Tree Maker 2011 the right upgrade for a FTM 11 user?

- by bill weaver
My father has used Family Tree Maker for years, but hasn't upgraded since version 11. It is difficult to tell from reviews at Amazon and other places whether upgrading to FTM 2011 is a good choice. File incompatibilities and upgrade woes sound like customer service is lacking, and i've read reports of it uploading your data to their database but then trying to sell you a download of data. Looking at the ancestry.com site makes me think it's solely about selling add-ons and upgrades. On the other hand, the feature set seems fairly rich and the software has a pretty strong following. I was able to get Gramps working on my system, but that's not going to work for my dad. Any advice on a good upgrade path?

• Email error 'Default email client is not properly installed' after installing Bugzilla 3.6.3 on Windows Home Server 2011

- by Brian Frost
I have been using Bugzilla fine on the older 32-bit Windows Home Server and I have now started a migration to the newer Windows Home Server 2011 with a new machine and a fresh Bugzilla install of 3.6.3. All goes well until I try to check out the email action and I get 'Could not perform this operation because the defaulty mail client in not properly installed. Is this a security /firewall issue? I dont know enough about servers to know what to look for, so any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

• In 2011, what are the reasons to stick with plain text mails?

- by Aaron Digulla
People entering college today have never known a world without an Internet. HTML was invented 1980, that's more than thirty years ago or 1.5 generations. But plain text mails are still common despite all their problems: Encoding issues Wrapped code segments No links No way to use the "a picture says more than a thousand words" lore Most of the security risks are now handled by the underlying browser engine and smart settings like: Don't allow JavaScript in mails Don't execute attachments Don't download external resources (like web bugs) On top of that, only very few people still read mail only in command line tools like Mutt. Knowing Mutt myself, I'm pretty sure you can configure it to display HTML mail with, say, w3m. On top of that, most HTML mail capable clients send two versions of the mail (pure text with an HTML attachment). I'm not sure if there are any people left on the planet which still use a 56kbit modem to access their mail accounts. So what reasons are left to stick with plain text mails in 2011?

• Emails from Google Apps to custom SMTP server delayed by 1 hour consistently

- by vimalk
The outgoing mails from Google Apps/Gmail to our own custom SMTP server are getting delayed by 1 hour consistently. mxtoolbox.com diagnostics of our custom SMTP server are looking OK. Our custom SMTP server is receiving emails from other sources (yahoo, hotmail etc.) on time. Looking at the SMTP logs show a delay in a google intermediate SMTP server. Received: by qwi2 with SMTP id 2so1989393qwi.3 for <[email protected]>; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 03:54:23 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.224.19.203 with SMTP id c11mr1587082qab.170.1296125657457; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 02:54:17 -0800 (PST) This setup has been working fine for a year though our custom email server was missing a reverse DNS entry and SPF records. Thinking that this could be the cause of the issue, we added these entries a week ago. But the issue still persists. Here are are more details: We are using Google Apps to host our primary domain email (say: mydomain.com) The custom SMTP server (say: s1.mydomain.com) hosts our subdomain (say: sub.mydomain.com) This is how the email log looks from [email protected] to [email protected] Return-Path: [email protected] Received: from localhost.localdomain (LHLO s1.mydomain.com) (127.0.0.1) by s1.mydomain.com with LMTP; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 17:24:28 +0530 (IST) Received: from localhost (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by s1.mydomain.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 605116A6565 for <[email protected]>; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 17:24:28 +0530 (IST) X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at sub.mydomain.com X-Spam-Flag: NO X-Spam-Score: 2.984 X-Spam-Level: ** X-Spam-Status: No, score=2.984 tagged_above=-10 required=6.6 t ests=[AWL=-0.337, BAYES_50=0.001, DNS_FROM_OPENWHOIS=1.13, FH_DATE_PAST_20XX=3.188, HTML_MESSAGE=0.001, HTML_OBFUSCATE_05_10=0.001, RCVD_IN_DNSWL_LOW=-1] autolearn=no Received: from s1.mydomain.com ([127.0.0.1]) by localhost (s1.mydomain.com [127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024) with ESMTP id RBjF7Wwr44mP for <[email protected]>; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 17:24:24 +0530 (IST) Received: from mail-qw0-f44.google.com (mail-qw0-f44.google.com [209.85.216.44]) by s1.mydomain.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id BB5DE6A6512 for <[email protected]>; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 17:24:23 +0530 (IST) Received: by qwi2 with SMTP id 2so1989393qwi.3 for <[email protected]>; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 03:54:23 -0800 (PST) MIME-Version: 1.0 Received: by 10.224.19.203 with SMTP id c11mr1587082qab.170.1296125657457; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 02:54:17 -0800 (PST) Received: by 10.220.117.17 with HTTP; Thu, 27 Jan 2011 02:54:17 -0800 (PST) Date: Thu, 27 Jan 2011 16:24:17 +0530 Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: test : 16:24 From: X <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary=0015175cba2865a5fe049ad1c5cd We appreciate any help that could help solve this issue :)
