  • Is there a performance difference between Cat5 and Cat6 keystone blocks?

    I'm going to be wiring my home for ethernet soon, and I've already decided that I want to use Cat6 cable to do it (faster speeds, better performance, etc). During the installation, I'd like to add wall-plates to certain rooms in my house, and the keystone blocks look like the best option for me. My question is: I've seen different keystone blocks on many cabling websites, some say Cat5e and some say Cat6. The Cat6 ones are slightly more expensive. Is there any noticeable performance gain from using a Cat6 keystone? To me, it just seems like the keystone really wouldn't matter, since it's basically like putting an RJ-45 end on a cable. Can I buy the cheaper Cat5e keystone blocks and still have the performance that Cat6 cable will give me? Thanks!

  • Unable to load type error in ASP.NET 4 application on Windows Server 2003 / IIS6 -- only happens after first worker process recycle

    I'm running an ASP.NET 4.0 web application on IIS6 (Windows Server 2003 x64). This app is one of many running on this server under the Default Web Site -- but is alone on it's own application pool because the other sites are all running ASP.NET 2.0 still. When I deploy my application, it works just fine until the application pool recycles or kills its worker process (by default 2 hours or 20 minutes with no activity). After this, I get the error: "Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. System.Reflection.ReflectionTypeLoadException: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information." Refreshing the page, recycling the application pool, and iisreset do nothing. But, I can bring the site back online again for a little while by simply redeploying it.   • How can I make Windows XP bootable again?

    Some time ago, I replaced my hard drive. Foolishly, I imaged the individual partitions, not the entire drive. That meant that my system was unbootable. For my primary OS (Linux), that was no problem as I could simply re-run GRUB. However Windows XP remains unbootable. The machine in question is a netbook which doesn't have a CD drive or a restore partition, so I can't boot from a Windows CD and run fixmbr. How can I fix Windows? Here's a picture of what I see when I try to boot Windows from the GRUB menu: I don't actually have an XP CD, since of my two machines, the netbook in question has neither a restore partition nor a CD, and my other XP machine only came with a restore partition. So I'll also need a way to get hold of the necessary files.

  • Fedora 15: em1 recently dissapeared and hostapd no longer serves internet to wirelessly connected devices

    I have a laptop running hostapd, phpd, and mysql. This laptop uses an Ethernet connection to connect to the internet and acts as a wireless access point for my workplace's wifi devices. After installing some software and reconnecting my Ethernet elsewhere, my "em1" device is no longer present and wirelessly connected devices can no longer reach the internet. The software I recently installed is: pptp, pptpd, and updated some fedora libraries. I have also recently moved my desk and laptop to another location and thus had to reconnect the Ethernet elsewhere. Wifi devices no longer have access to the internet. Wirelessly connected devices are able to successfully log into the laptop, showing full strength, correct SSID, and uses the proper password. However, when I tried to connect to a site like google, the request times out. The device "em1" also no longer appears on my machine. Running: # ifup em1 will give me the following output: ERROR : [/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth] Device em1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. And running: # dhclient em1 has the following output: Cannot find device "em1" When I run # dmesg|grep renamed, I get the following: renamed network interface eth0 to p4p1. I've tried to connect to the internet through p4p1 directly from the laptop and was successful. However, my wireless devices connected to my laptop are not able to connect to the internet. I have uninstalled pptp and pptpd using # yum erase ... but the problem still persists.   • How can I prevent Apache from asking for credentials on non SSL site

    I have a web server with several virtual hosts. Some of those hosts have an associated ssl site. I have a DirectoryMatch directive in my main config file which requires basic authentication to any directory with secured as part of the directory path. On sites that have an SSL site, I have a rewrite rule (located in the non ssl config for that site), that redirects to the SSL site, same uri. The problem is the http (80) site asks for credentials first, and then the https (443) site asks for credentials again. I would like to prevent the http site from asking and thus avoid the potential for someone entering credentials and having them sent in clear text. I know I could move the DirectoryMatch down to the specific site, and just put the auth statement in the SSL config, but that would introduce the possibility of forgetting to protect critical directories when creating new sites. Here are the pertinent declarations: httpd.conf (all sites): <DirectoryMatch "_secured_"> AuthType Basic AuthName "+ + + Restrcted Area on Server + + +" AuthUserFile /home/websvr/.auth/std.auth Require valid-user </DirectoryMatch> site.conf (specific to individual site) <DirectoryMatch "_secured_"> RewriteEngine On RewriteRule .*(_secured_.*) https://site.com/$1 </DirectoryMatch> Is there a way to leave DirectoryMatch in the main config file and prevent the request for authorization from the http site?     My dad asked me how he could script the pasting/inclusion of images in various applications. I'm sure I could script out some quick <img src=... HTML but I believe he's also looking to do this in Windows GUI applications like Word or Outlook. So, how could I script a process with the following inputs and outputs: load_image_into_clipboard_script.cmd sample_file.jpg Clipboard now contains the aforementioned image file, just as if I'd e.g. opened it in Paint and done a Select All - Copy. I noticed there's a clip.exe utility with Vista/Win2003 and up; perhaps that will be a useful intermediary?

    I would like to configure Forefront Threat Management Gateway (formerly ISA server) to impersonate a specific domain user for any anonymous request to a particular listener. For example, for any anonymous request to http://www.mycompany.com, I would like to serve up http://myinternal as though MYDOMAIN/GuestAccount were accessing the site. Is this even possible in ISA/TMG? If so, where do I go to configure this?

  • AviSynth ChangeFPS: combining videos with different framerates

    I have two video recordings of the same scene, but with different framerates, that I would like to combine using an AviSynth script. One video is recorded at 30fps, the other at 120fps. What I would like to do is to keep them temporally synchronised, meaning that for each frame of the 30fps video, the output should display 4 frames from the 120fps video. I would like the final output video to play at 30fps so that the duration is 4 times the original recordings. From AviSynth's documentation, it seems ChangeFPS is the function I'll need, since it removes and duplicates frames, while 'AssumeFPS' just changes the playback speed (and my plan is basically to quadruple every frame of the 30fps clip). However, the filter does not seem to do what it says. If I try: clip30 = AviSource("0326.avi").ChangeFPS(120) clip120 = AviSource("0326-120fps.avi") it doesn't affect the playback speed or frame count of the 30fps clip at all, but removes every fourth frame from the 120fps clip, which is not at all what I want. Unfortunately, appending .ChangeFPS(7.5) to the clip120 instead does not have the same inverse effect—in that case, it does exactly what's to be expected. Alternatively, if I try: clip30 = AviSource("0326.avi").AssumeFPS(7.5) clip120 = AviSource("0326-120fps.avi") there is no effect at all, both clips are played back at 30fps, meaning that only a quarter of the 120fps clip has been shown by the time the 30fps clip is over. So how can I combine these two clips in the manner I want? I was unable to find any other internal or external filters that would help me do that. It seems to me that if ChangeFPS did what the manual says, it would be the right one for the job.

  • Security of BitLocker with no PIN from WinPE?

    Say you have a computer with the system drive encrypted by BitLocker and you're not using a PIN so the computer will boot up unattended. What happens if an attacker boots the system up into the Windows Preinstallation Environment? Will they have access to the encrypted drive? Does it change if you have a TPM vs. using only a USB startup key? What I'm trying to determine is whether the TPM / USB startup key is usable without booting from the original operating system. In other words, if you're using a USB startup key and the machine is rebooted normally then the data would still be protected unless an attacker was able to log in. But what if the hacker just boots the server into a Windows Preinstallation Environment with the USB startup key plugged in? Would they then have access to the data? Or would that require the recovery key? Ideally the recovery key would be required when booted like this, but I haven't seen this documented anywhere.

  • How to fix IE starting when I try to start Opera?

    I have a problem that started today, where trying to run any of the 3 versions of Opera I have installed causes Internet Explorer to start instead. The Opera versions I have installed are 9.64, 10.10, and 10.63. My OS is Windows Vista with the latest critical/important updates. The behaviour is the same regardless of whether I double-click a shortcut to Opera, double-click on Opera.exe in one of the install directories, or run Opera.exe with the full path from Start-Run. The only work-around I've found is to right-click Opera.exe or a shortcut, and click "Run as administrator". This starts Opera, and it appears to work normally. Opera seems to be the only program so affected. I've checked Firefox and a few other (non-browser) programs, and they work normally. When IE starts instead of Opera, there are always two instances of iexplore.exe started, and they both crash before I can do anything else. IE also crashes if I try to start it from its own shortcut, but I don't know if that only started today, since I hadn't used IE for a few weeks. Does anyone know what might cause this and how to fix it? It's possible my PC has a virus, but BitDefender (for which I have automatic updates enabled) hasn't detected anything.

  • Daylight Savings Time and Microsoft Exchange woes

    Ever since the switch from Standard Time to Daylight Time, the time on our e-mail messages has been ahead by one hour. This symptom has me wondering if the cause is improper configuration of daylight savings settings. Since we're in a client/server environment, the clients synchronize with the server, and the server synchronizes with Boulder, Colorado. If I set both the server and the clients to automatically switch to daylight savings, the clients seem to regard the server as being set to Standard Time and set themselves an hour ahead of it, which is really two hours ahead. Should the server switch to daylight savings and the clients follow along on their next synchronization, or should the server stay on Standard Time and the clients switch over? The system clock on the Exchange Server is currently displaying the correct time. How do I get the e-mail messages to display the correct time in Outlook?

  • Postgres pgpass windows - not working

    DB: Postgres 9.0 Client: Windows 7 Server Windows 2008, 64bit I'm trying to connect remotely to a postgres instance for purposes of performing a pg_dump to my local machine. Everything works from my client machine, except that I need to provide a password at the password prompt, and I'd ultimately like to batch this with a script. I've followed the instructions here: http://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/libpq-pgpass.html but it's not working. To recap, I've created a file on the client (and tried the server as well): C:/Users/postgres/AppData/postgresql/pgpass.conf, where postgresql is the db user. The file has one line with the following data: *:5432:*postgres:[mypassword] (also tried explicit ip/dbname values, all asterisks, and every combination in between. (I've also tried replacing each '*' with [localhost|myip] and [mydatabasename] respectively. From my client machine, I connect using: pg_dump -h [myip] -U postgres -w [mydbname] [mylocaldumpfile] I'm presuming that I need to provide the '-w' switch in order to ignore password prompt, at which point it should look in the AppData directory on the server. It just comes back with "connection to database failed: fe_sendauth: no password supplied. Any insights are appreciated. As a hack workaround, if there was a way I could tell the windows batch file on my client machine to inject the password at the postgres prompt, that would work as well. Thanks.

  • vmware esxi 5, cant create snapshots and consolidate fails, how to delete old or consolidate redo logs?

    I have a VM that seems to be working ok, but when VMWare DR (or I) tries to create a snap shot, it fails, and when I view the summary page of the VM it has a warning at the top showing that the disks need to be consolidated. So I go to snapshot manager for the VM and choose consolidate (in snapshot manager, there are no snapshots actually listed by the way). If fails with this error: This virtual machine has 255 or more redo logs in a single branch of its snapshot tree. The maximum supported limit has been reached, creating new snapshots will not be allowed. To create new snapshots, please delete old snapshots or consolidate the redo logs. If I browse the data store (which has plenty of free space, 2 TB and this vm is under 40gb), in the vm folder, I do in fact see a bunch of files, numbered all the way to 0255: myvm-000255-ctk.vmdk myvm-000255-delta.vmdk myvm-000255.vmdk How can I clean all this up? Is there an SSH command line command or can I delete some of the files safely? Thanks!

  • ClearOS transparent firewall and web proxy mode possible?

    In other firewall software packages I have seen the ability and am hoping it is possible with ClearOS to put it in to transparent or bridged mode where the device sits physically between the client workstations and the internet router, but is the client workstation has the internet router address as it's gateway, not the clearos machine. The client workstation would also not have to enter an http proxy address as that would be transparent. Is this possible and how do you configure ClearOS this way? Thanks!

  • Is there a way to disable Windows automatically choosing folder templates?

    Windows Vista (and I guess Win 7 though I haven't used it) sometimes automatically applies templates to folders opened in Explorer based on their content. E.g. a folder with photos automatically gets the columns "Date taken", "Tags", and "Rating". Is there a way to disable the automatic application of this feature while still allowing manual customisation? I really want to apply the "All Items" template to all folders on all drives, and have it stay that way except on a few folders that I manually customise. The reason I want to disable the automatic behaviour is that it's often just wrong. I have folders with over 100 files where Windows has automatically applied a template based on the types of one or two of those files, and the template is wrong for everything else in the same folder.

  • Lightweight, low cost enterprise backup solution

    Looking for a backup solution primarily for Windows clients (XP/7), that will either back up to 2 different servers (1 on site, 1 off site - internet - can be our own server), or back up to 1 server and then we would need to somehow backup that server offsite/internet. By lightweight, I mean the backup client software should not eat up much memory and processor since some of the client machines are older. I am used to using Crashplan for home use - the pricing is nice for the amount of backup I get, and it works great / easy to install and get going - I can back up to my own machines locally and over the net. However, the price is going to be a little steep for enterprise level backup, 1500+ machines. Possibly ZManda and Bacula are good choices to consider? Are they light weight? Can the clients/agents be set to go over the net and/or multiple backup servers?

  • iTunes video black screen until select computer output

    I don't remember this happening before, but now whenever I play any video in iTunes (podcast video, movie, TV show, iTunes extras stuff but the menus work) it just shows a black screen with the sound playing. If I stop it, select "Computer" in the little output control on the iTunes video control panel that pops up, then play again, it works fine. What the heck? Tried rebooting, updating, with and without external monitor. OSX 10.6.6

    I built a desktop computer a couple years back with the following specs: CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz 6 MB L2 Cache LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor BX80580Q9300 Motherboard: EVGA 122-CK-NF68-T1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard Video Card: Two EVGA 256-P2-N758-TR GeForce 8600GT SCC 256 MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card PSU: SeaSonic S12 Energy Plus SS-550HT 550W ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Power Supply Memory: Two G.SKILL 4 GB (2 x 2 GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ Since its inception, the machine has periodically locked up, the regularity having varied over the years from once a day to once a month. Typically, lockups happen once every few days. By "lockup" I mean my computer just freezes. The screen locks up, I can't move the mouse. Hitting keys on my keyboard that normally turn LEDs on or off on the keyboard (such as Caps Lock) no longer turn the LEDs on or off. If there was music playing at the time of the lockup, noise keeps coming out of the speakers, but it's just the current frequency/note that plays indefinitely. There is no BSOD. When such a lockup occurs I have to do a hard reboot by either turning off the computer or hitting the reset button. I have the most recent version of the NVIDIA hardware drivers, and update them semi-regularly, but that hasn't seemed to help. I am currently using Windows 7 x64, but was previously using Windows Server 2003 x64 and having the same lockup issues. My guess is that it's somehow video driver or motherboard related, but I don't know how to go about diagnosing this problem to narrow down which of the two is the culprit. Additional information re: cooling Regarding cooling... I've not installed any after-market cooling systems aside from two regular fans I scavenged from an older computer. The fan atop the CPU is the one that shipped with it. One of the two scavenged fans I added it located at the bottom tower of the corner, in an attempt to create some airflow from front to back. The second fan is pointed directly at the two video cards. SpeedFan installation and readings Per studiohack's suggestion, I installed SpeedFan, which provided the following temperature readings: GPU: 63C GPU: 65C System: 76C CPU: 64C AUX: 36C Core 0: 78C Core 1: 76C Core 2: 79C Core 3: 79C Update #3: Another Lockup :-( Well, I had another lockup last night. :-( SpeedFan reported the CPU temp at 38 C when it happened, and there was no spike in temperature leading up to the freeze. One thing I notice is that the freeze seems more likely to happen if I am watching a video. In fact, of the last 5 freezes over the past month, 4 of them have been while watching a video on Flickr. Not necessarily the same video, but a video nevertheless. I don't know if this is just coincidence or if it means anything. (As an aside, each night before bedtime my 2 year old daughter sits on my lap and watches some home videos on Flickr and, in the last month, has learned the phrase, "Uh oh, computer broke.") Update #4: MemTest86 and 3DMark06 Test Results: Per suggestions in the comments, I ran the MemTest86 overnight and it cycled through the 8 GB of memory 5 times without error. I also ran the 3DMark06 test without a problem (see my scores at http://3dmark.com/3dm06/15163549). So... what now? :-) Any further suggestions on what to check? Is there some way to get a stack trace or something when the computer locks like that? Resolution I have never did figure out the particular problems, but based on the suggestions here and elsewhere, I'm presuming it was a motherboard issue. In any event, I recently upgraded my system, buying a new motherbeard, PSU, CPU, and RAM, and that new rig has been working splendidly the past several weeks. I am using the same graphic cards as in the old setup, so I think it's safe to reason that they weren't the cause of the problem.

I basically found some sample code and modified it to my specific purpose. What I don't quite understand is: Why does $1 refer to the the portion of the supplied url after the hostname - where is the documentation for this? There is no backreference in the RewriteCond.

  • Copying single files into a folder that changes name every time the batch file is executed

    Can you please help, I am using this to put the text files made by the batch file into the folder created by the batch file as well. but my problem is that the name is changed of the new folder every time because it is named by the date and time it was created.
