  Hi All, I am new to Iphone programming. So please don't mind if I ask some basic questions. :mad: I want to develop an application where the landing screen will be a login screen and after login application should display a new screen with the list of available categories. And on selecting any category a new screen should appear with the information related to the selected category. Basically I want to display different screens in the applications and my confusion is how can I make different screens with one .xib file? or should I use different .xib files for each screen. If I use different .xib files for each screen then how should I navigate to different screens. Please help in solving this confusion. Thanks in advance Gaurav

• Silverlight authentication during startup - how to mimic syncronous behavior?

  I have a Silverlight app that is using the MVVM pattern. I have a WCF service which will allow me to authenticate users (I don't have direct control over that service - assume it is a black box that just returns me the user info and a list of privileges the user has). So, when the app starts up, I want to pull security data from that service. Right now, when I do this, my views and view models can end up getting initialized before the service returns with the security data. This causes problems because the view models need to disable buttons and make things visible/invisible based on the user having certain privileges. Is there a pattern that allows me to prevent the initialization of the views / view models until the WCF call has returned? How would you go about solving this problem as elegantly as possible?

• PHP File Exists Always False

  I have a case where file_exists() is always returning false. My latest attempt was to just test to see if it would return true for $_SERVER["SCRIPT_FILENAME"] and then return the value of the path if it couldn't find the file which it does. The path while not necessarily relevant to solving the problem is: /Users/joe/Workspace/720/app/webroot/index.php I have obviously verified that the file is there, and am not even sure how it couldn't be there since php is serving it up. I should mention this is on an install of OS X Snow Leopard running PHP 5.3.0. Any ideas would be fantastic. • synchronizing audio over a network

  I'm in startup of designing a client/server audio system which can stream audio arbitrarily over a network. One central server pumps out an audio stream and x number of clients receives the audio data and plays it. So far no magic needed and I have even got this scenario to work with VLC media player out of the box. However, the tricky part seems to be synchronizing the audio playback so that all clients are in audible synch (actual latency can be allowed as long as it is perceived to be in sync by a human listener). My question is if there's any known method or algorithm to use for these types of synchronization problems (video is probably solved the same way). My own initial thoughts centers around synchronizing clocks between physical machines and thereby creating a virtual "main timer" and somehow aligning audio data packets against it. • Sudoku solver evaluation function

  Hi, So I'm trying to write a simple genetic algorithm for solving a sudoku (not the most efficient way, I know, but it's just to practice evolutionary algorithms). I'm having some problems coming up with an efficient evaluation function to test if the puzzle is solved or not and how many errors there are. My first instinct would be to check if each row and column of the matrix (doing it in octave, which is similar to matlab) have unique elements by ordering them, checking for duplicates and then putting them back the way they were, which seems long winded. Any thoughts? Sorry if this has been asked before...

• microsoft local report page width problem when table column hide

  I create some dynamic report. by default, create a table with all available field and hidden by expression, therefore column hide when user want (by checkbox in aspx page) problem: my report is "right to left" therefore when hiding some column, report must shown from right, but as you know, when report render, it create table column from left, my question is how to render report from right ???? for solving this problem i create some column without data and set hidden expression != main column hidden state, therefore my problem solved but found another problem, report width!!! because page width really must 8.5in but when hiding some column, page Width not decrease and remain 15in!!! how to solve this problem ??? • Problem with numbers

  I am given a number N, and i must add some numbers from the array V so that they wil be equal. V is consisting of numbers that are all powers of 3: N = 17 S = 0 V = 1 3 9 27 81 .. I should add numbers from V to N and S in order to make them equal. The solution to the example above is : 17 + 1 + 9 = 27, 27, 1 and 9 are taken from V, a number from V can be taken only once, and when taken it's removed from V. I tried sorting V and then adding the biggest numbers from V to S until S has reached N, but it fails on some tests when it's like: N = 7 S = 0 V = 1 3 9 27 So the solution will be: 7 + 3 = 9 + 1 In examples like this i need to add numbers both to N and S, and also select them so they become equal. Any idea of solving this ? Thanks.

• I'm a professional Java developer, should I learn .NET?

  Java and .NET seem to have a great number of parallels especially in the web application area. Both languages have many of the same technologies especially in terms of open source libraries (JUnit and NUnit, Hibernate and NHibernate) but there are also plenty of differences and different approaches to solving certain software development problems. As a Java developer I get the feeling I'm missing out on learning about web application development from the .NET point of view and I could learn a lot about the general principles by learning two languages rather than getting stuck in the details of Java and not seeing the bigger picture. So the first question is, do you agree? Does learning two separate but similar languages such as Java and .NET make you a better programmer? Secondly, I'm worried that if I choose to take, for example, a MCPD ASP.NET 3.5 certification it won't actually help me get work doing .NET development because it goes against all my existing experience. Is trying to broaden your skills a good career choice or is it a better decision to choose one technology and stick with that?

• Operand size conflict in x86 Assembly??

  I'm a novice programmer who is attempting assembly for the first time. Sorry in advance if this is an incredibly lame question. I have a character stored in the EAX register, but I need to move it to my DL register. When I try: mov dl, eax I get an error C2443: operand size conflict. I know that the eax register is 32 bit while the dl is 8 bit... am I on to something?? How do I go about solving this.

• How do you find time for improving your programming skills?

  I'm a Java/J2ee programmer working in India. I'm very passionate about programming and I constantly strive to hone my programming skills by reading blogs, solving Project euler questions, learning new technologies, developing small apps etc;. But I find it very difficult to manage my time. Working for 12 hrs a day in office leaves me stressed out and spend my weekends with my family. So i hardly have like 5-6 hrs per week to actually work on something of my interest which will help me improve. How do you manage time so that you find time to improve your current standing? EDIT: 12 hours includes 1hour of travel & 1 hr of break(lunch/coffee). Effectively I work for 10 hours per day in office which is mandated by my organization. -Snehal

  Okay one of my homework problems is to take a list of lists and return the car of each sublist as a list. I have it to where I can print out the values, but it's not a list. To be honest, I have no clue how to output lists. • hidden row causing issue with tablesorter zebra striping

  Sorry if this has already been solved elsewhere but my searches have been able to turn up nothing and my attempts at solving the issue myself have made even less progress. :P Put quite simply I have a table that is using the jquery tablesorter and it's zebra widget. In this table there is a hidden column. I've so far been able to make it so that when a tr contains specific text (I was aiming for * but was seemingly unable to get \* to work for whatever reason...and I suspect my selector is perhaps not specific enough) the containing row is set not to display by ".hide()". The problem I am having though is when the row is hidden, tablesorter does exactly what it should do and stripes all the rows their specific colours based on their odd and even values. Of course .remove doesn't do the trick either as the table still sees some funny striping. Any thoughts on how to make it so that when a row is hidden, the striping compensates?

• IE6 - body shrink on hover / z-index change

  I'm debugging a site to make it work for IE6 (god, please, let this be the last time). I've gotten pretty far with getting the the layout look right. There's just one more thing bugging me. Some elements like links, when they get hovered, the body of the site shrinks. I have built a dropdown with javascript. When it should show, the body of the site shrinks. There is a slideshow, made with javascript, which changes the z-index of the images, everytime it changes the z-index, the body shrinks. Now I found some information that IE6 creates this specific shrinking behaviour when using a fixed position element. But this is not the case. Someone here have some ideas for solving this? Thanks!

  I've recently been trying out Ankhsvn and I quite like it, and more importantly, it generally likes me. But I've hit a problem adding existing VS projects to subversion using AnkhSVN. Most Windows and Web projects are added fine, but I have a problem when I try to a Websites (as opposed to Web Applications), and in these cases I get the following error: No versioned parent directories After some googling, I've come across other people with the same problems and there have been one or two suggests for solving the problem, but non so far have worked. AnkhSVN is popular enough, and although web applications are often preferred to websites these days, I'm hoping that someone here has a ready solution available.

  I have a swf hosted at domain A, and I have a html at domain B My swf is able to be loaded from accessing the html at domain B. However, the swf gets a SecurityError: Error #2060: Security sandbox violation: ExternalInterface caller http://domainA.com/TrialApp.swf cannot access http://DomainB.com/. The as3 is just the below: ExternalInterface.call("javascript:_invite();"); I've also loaded the crossdomain policy file from Domain B during initialization. • Polymorphism in SQL database tables?

  I currently have multiple tables in my database which consist of the same 'basic fields' like: name character varying(100), description text, url character varying(255) But I have multiple specializations of that basic table, which is for example that tv_series has the fields season, episode, airing, while the movies table has release_date, budget etc. Now at first this is not a problem, but I want to create a second table, called linkgroups with a Foreign Key to these specialized tables. That means I would somehow have to normalize it within itself. One way of solving this I have heard of is to normalize it with a key-value-pair-table, but I do not like that idea since it is kind of a 'database-within-a-database' scheme, I do not have a way to require certain keys/fields nor require a special type, and it would be a huge pain to fetch and order the data later. So I am looking for a way now to 'share' a Primary Key between multiple tables or even better: a way to normalize it by having a general table and multiple specialized tables.

• Screen scrape a web page that uses javaScript and frames

  Hi, I want to scrape data from www.marktplaats.nl . I want to analyze the scraped description, price, date and views in Excel/Access. I tried to scrape data with Ruby (nokogiri, scrapi) but nothing worked. (on other sites it worked well) The main problem is that for example selectorgadget and the add-on firebug (Firefox) don’t find any css I can use to scrape the page. On other sites I can extract the css with selectorgadget or firebug and use it with nokogiri or scrapi. Due to lack of experience it is difficult to identify the problem and therefore searching for a solution isn’t easy. Can you tell me where to start solving this problem and where I maybe can find more info about a similar scraping process? Thanks in advance!

• Function pointer arrays in Fortran

  I can create function pointers in Fortran 90, with code like real, external :: f and then use f as an argument to another function/subroutine. But what if I want an array of function pointers? In C I would just do double (*f[])(int); to create an array of functions returning double and taking an integer argument. I tried the most obvious, real, external, dimension(3) :: f but gfortran doesn't let me mix EXTERNAL and DIMENSION. Is there any way to do what I want? (The context for this is a program for solving a system of differential equations, so I could input the equations without having a million parameters in my subroutines.)

• Occasional InterruptedException when quitting a Swing application

  I recently updated my computer to a more powerful one, with a quad-core hyperthreading processor (i7), thus plenty of real concurrency available. Now I'm occasionally getting the following error when quitting (System.exit(0)) an application (with a Swing GUI) that I'm developing: Exception while removing reference: java.lang.InterruptedException java.lang.InterruptedException at java.lang.Object.wait(Native Method) at java.lang.ref.ReferenceQueue.remove(ReferenceQueue.java:118) at java.lang.ref.ReferenceQueue.remove(ReferenceQueue.java:134) at sun.java2d.Disposer.run(Disposer.java:125) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:619) Well, given that it started to happen with a more concurrency-capable hardware, and it has to do with threads, and it happens occasionally, it's obviously some kind of timing thing. But the problem is that the stack trace is so short. All I have is the listing above. It doesn't include my own code at all, so it's somewhat hard to guess where the bug is. Has anyone experienced something like this before? Any ideas how to start solving it?

• Subclassing Satchmo's Category model, but then getting the error "'Manager' object has no attribute 'root_categories'"

  I'm using Satchmo as part of a website I'm currently building. At the moment I'm trying add more functions to the Satchmo Category class, but obviously I'm not going to make any changes to the Satchmo files. So, I thought that subclassing the Category class would give me a new class which contains all the Satchmo Category properties and methods while allowing me to add my own. However, either Python subclassing doesn't work like that, or I am doing it wrong. • C# .net -> SQLite error: Unable to open the database file

  Hello all, I'm getting "System.Data.SQLite.SQLiteException: Unable to open the database file." when I attempt to access the database to save a record upon the "first" opening of my program. Here's the thing, it works fine when debugging locally in Visual Studio, but stops working when I package the program in an installer, and then install the program somewhere. I was guessing that it was the location of the database, which I just have set at database.s3db without a path, because it is stored next to the program's exe, but how could that cause problems? I'm at a loss, any further ideas or suggestions for solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.
