  • How best to implement "favourites" feature? (like favourite products on a data driven website)

    Hi, I have written a dynamic database driven, object oriented website with an administration frontend etc etc. I would like to add a feature where customers can save items as "favourites", without having to create an account and login, to come back to them later, but I dont know how exactly to go about doing this... I see three options: Log favourites based on IP address and then change these to be logged against an account if the customer then creates an account; Force customers to create an account to be able to use this functionality; Log favourites based on IP address but give users the option to save their favourites under a name they specify. The problem with option 1 is that I dont know much about IP addresses - my Dad thinks they are unique, but I know people have had problems with systems like this. The problem with 1 and 2 is that accounts have not been opened up to customers yet - only administrators can log in at the moment. It should be easy to alter this (no more than a morning or afternoons work) but I would also have to implement usergroups too. The problem with option 3 is that if user A saves a favourites list called "My Favourites", and then user B tries to save a list under this name and it is refused, user B will then be able to access the list saved by user A because they now know it already exists. A solution to this is to password protect lists, but to go to all this effort I may as well implement option 2. Of course I could always use option 4; use an alternative if anyone can suggest a better solution than any of the above options. So has anyone ever done something like this before?     The R language has a nifty feature for defining functions that can take a variable number of arguments. For example, the function data.frame takes any number of arguments, and each argument becomes the data for a column in the resulting data table. Example usage: > data.frame(letters=c("a", "b", "c"), numbers=c(1,2,3), notes=c("do", "re", "mi")) letters numbers notes 1 a 1 do 2 b 2 re 3 c 3 mi The function's signature includes an ellipsis, like this: function (..., row.names = NULL, check.rows = FALSE, check.names = TRUE, stringsAsFactors = default.stringsAsFactors()) { [FUNCTION DEFINITION HERE] } I would like to write a function that does something similar, taking multiple values and consolidating them into a single return value (as well as doing some other processing). In order to do this, I need to figure out how to "unpack" the ... from the function's arguments within the function. I don't know how to do this. The relevant line in the function definition of data.frame is object <- as.list(substitute(list(...)))[-1L], which I can't make any sense of. So how can I convert the ellipsis from the function's signature into, for example, a list?   • Why should I care about RVM's Gemset feature when I use Bundler?

    I just don't get it. I thought, Bundler was developed to resolve version conflicts between gems. So that I just have to require "bundler/setup" and everything is fine, knowing that Bundler will load the correct versions of all my gems and their dependencies. Now, RVM is great for managing multiple Rubies, I know, but why should I care about the Gemset feature? Do I miss something here? Can it make my development even easier? Maybe, some of you can give me some hints on the perfect RVM + Bundler workflow for both, development and production. I also don't know when RVM starts switching to another Ruby. I know that I can have an .rvmrc file in my project, but do I have to cd to this directory so that the switch happens? Furthermore, I usually use Passenger for development since, thanks to the Passenger.prefpane, integration in Mac OS is great. Can I still do that with RVM or is there a better way to do it? Does Passenger recognize .rvmrc files and switch to the correct Gemset?

    Question about how AppFabric's cache feature can be used. I apologize for asking a question that I should be able to answer from the documentation, but I have read and read and searched and cannot answer this question, which leads me to believe that I have a fundamentally flawed understanding of what AppFabric's caching capabilities are intended for. I work for a geographically disperse company. We have a particular application that was originally written as a client/server application. It’s so massive and business critical that we want to baby step converting it to a better architected solution. One of the ideas we had was to convert the app to read its data using WCF calls to a co-located web server that would cache communication with the database in the United States. The nature of the application is such that everyone will tend to be viewing the same 2000 records or so with only occasional updates and those updates will be made by a limited set of users. I was hoping that AppFabric’s cache mechanism would allow me to set up one global cache and when a user in Asia, for example, requested data that was not in the cache or was stale that the web server would read from the database in the USA, provide the data to the user, then update the cache which would propagate that data to the other web servers so that they would know not to go back to the database themselves. Can AppFabric work this way or should I just have the servers retrieve their own data from the database?

  • GCC, -O2, and bitfields - is this a bug or a feature?

    Today I discovered alarming behavior when experimenting with bit fields. For the sake of discussion and simplicity, here's an example program: #include <stdio.h> struct Node { int a:16 __attribute__ ((packed)); int b:16 __attribute__ ((packed)); unsigned int c:27 __attribute__ ((packed)); unsigned int d:3 __attribute__ ((packed)); unsigned int e:2 __attribute__ ((packed)); }; int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { Node n; n.a = 12345; n.b = -23456; n.c = 0x7ffffff; n.d = 0x7; n.e = 0x3; printf("3-bit field cast to int: %d\n",(int)n.d); n.d++; printf("3-bit field cast to int: %d\n",(int)n.d); } The program is purposely causing the 3-bit bit-field to overflow. Here's the (correct) output when compiled using "g++ -O0": 3-bit field cast to int: 7 3-bit field cast to int: 0 Here's the output when compiled using "g++ -O2" (and -O3): 3-bit field cast to int: 7 3-bit field cast to int: 8 Checking the assembly of the latter example, I found this: movl $7, %esi movl $.LC1, %edi xorl %eax, %eax call printf movl $8, %esi movl $.LC1, %edi xorl %eax, %eax call printf xorl %eax, %eax addq $8, %rsp The optimizations have just inserted "8", assuming 7+1=8 when in fact the number overflows and is zero. Fortunately the code I care about doesn't overflow as far as I know, but this situation scares me - is this a known bug, a feature, or is this expected behavior? When can I expect gcc to be right about this? Edit (re: signed/unsigned) : It's being treated as unsigned because it's declared as unsigned. Declaring it as int you get the output (with O0): 3-bit field cast to int: -1 3-bit field cast to int: 0 An even funnier thing happens with -O2 in this case: 3-bit field cast to int: 7 3-bit field cast to int: 8 I admit that attribute is a fishy thing to use; in this case it's a difference in optimization settings I'm concerned about.

If I try this in PHP, however: echo array("Dog","Cat,"Gates")[1] This won't work. What is this called, not only concerning arrays but all functions? Where else is it possible? Feel free to change the question title when you know how this "feature" is called.

  • Best way to import a pack or "system" of new classes??

    Here's an Advanced question for Advanced developers. So I've written a largish "subsystem". It is essentially a UIViewController called CleverViewController which is a UIViewController. Now, there are a large number of supporting classes (about ten) that do the hard work: perform math functions, image processing, purely logical functions, build images or what have you with thousands of lines of code. (To do this, I simply started a new XCode project / app "Scratchpad" which does little other than load and launch the CleverViewController. So currently it works as an app, which launches CleverViewController. The ten or so classes I mention that are part of the "subsystem" simply sit there in that project/app.) So now, we will use CleverViewController, the new technology generally, in various apps. (Or perhaps friends would want to use it, etc.) What's the best way to "do" this? Have I screwed everything up, and really it should just be ONE (pretty big) class rather than a dozen classes? (I could understand that then as I would simply add that new (big) class where needed, like adding any other class.) Do I have to make a "framework" like the Apple frameworks? (If so, what the hell are they, how do you do it, etc?!?) In fact, do you just have to lamely include all of the dozen classes and that's that (obviously perhaps putting them in a grouped subfolder). What about all the headers and so on? (Currently I just have the dozen includes in the pch file of the scratchpad project.) Shouldn't it be easy to "maintain" this "subsystem" separately and so on? I'm afraid I know nothing about this: if the answer is obvious, hit me over the head and let me know. Thank you for any info on this !

  • SharePoint 2010 Hosting :: SharePoint 2010 Custom Web Template

    SharePoint 2010 offers some changes and additions to the SharePoint 2007 approach. Site definitions and publishing providers remain largely the same, but site templates created from the SharePoint UI or SharePoint Designer are now saved to a .WSP file, the same solution deployment packaging file format used for deploying custom SharePoint solutions. Site Templates saved to a .WSP solution file can be imported into Visual Studio for additional customization. Introducing the WebTemplate Feature Element The WebTemplate element, introduced in SharePoint 2010, allows site templates to be defined and deployed as a Feature as part of a solution package. A WebTemplate element feature can be used to deploy site templates in either a Farm or Sandbox solution - without modification. If deployed as a Farm feature and solution, site templates will appear in the site collection provisioning page in Central Administration and can be used to provision new site collections, or within a Site Collection to create sub-sites. If deployed as a Site feature and Sandbox solution, site templates will appear within the site collection to support creating a root site or sub-sites. Creating a new WebTemplate Feature in Visual Studio 2010 In addition to supporting the ability to save and import Site Templates created from the SharePoint UI into Visual Studio for customization, it can also be used to create new site templates from scratch. In the following sample we will walk through how to create a new WebTemplate solution based on  a customized version of the out-of-box Blank Site. 1. Create a new Empty SharePoint Project in Visual Studio 2010. 2. Add a new Empty Element to the project. we like to create folders for each type of element in our solution, so in our sample, we have created a Web Templates folder, and then added the BLANKENT element. NOTE: The Elements folder MUST share the same name as the WebTemplate name property. 3. Open the empty Elements.xml and add the <WebTemplate /> element block. 4. Copy the default.aspx and ONET.XML files from the STS site definition location at 14\TEMPLATES\Site Templates\STS. We will customize the ONET.XML in the next section. Open the properties for each file and set the Deployment Type to ElementFile. This ensures the files are deployed with the Element when included in a Feature. 5. By default a new feature is added to the solution for you automatically when a new element is added to the solution. Rename and edit the feature as appropriate. Select Farm for the scope to deploy the WebTemplate to the entire farm, or Site for a sandboxed solution. Customize the ONET.XML At this point, you have a working WebTemplate solution that will deploy the identical site to the out-of-box Blank Site, however the ONET.XML supporting the STS site definition contains 3 configurations – essentially 3 separate site templates and can be simplified before customizing. In the following sample, we have trimmed the ONET.XML to the essentials for a single Site Template, and added references to the <SiteFeatures /> and <WebFeatures /> elements to include the SharePoint Standard and Enterprise features. We have left the top-level navigation bar, and the default page module intact, but removed all other extraneous markup.

  • Sendmail Failing to Forward Locally Addressed Mail to Exchange Server

    I've recently gained employment as a web developer with a small company. What they neglected to tell me upon hire was that I would be administrating the server along with my other daily duties. Now, truth be told, I'm not clueless when it comes to these things, but this is my first rodeo working with a rack server/console.. However, I'm confident that I will be able to work through any solutions you provide. Short Description: When a customer places an order via our (Magento CE 1.8.1.0) website, a copy of said order is supposed to be BCC'd to our sales manager. I say supposed because this was a working feature before the old administrator left. Long Description: Shortly after I started, we had a server crash which required a server restart. After restart, we noticed a few features on our site weren't working, but all those have been cleaned up except this one. I had to create an account on our server for root access. When a customer places an order, our sites software (Magento CE 1.8.1.0) is configured to BCC the customers order email to our sales manager. We use a Microsoft Exchange 2007 Server for our mail, which is hosted on a different machine (in-house) that I don't have access to ATM, but I'm sure I could if needed. As far as I can tell, all other external emails work.. Only INTERNAL email addresses fail to deliver. I know this because I've also tested my own internal address via our website. I set up an account with an internal email, made a test order, and never received the email. I changed my email for the account to an external GMail account, and received emails as expected. Let's dive into the logs and config's. For privacy/security reasons, names have been changed to the following: domain.com = Our Top Level Domain. email.local = Our Exchange Server. example.com = ANY other TLD. OLDadmin = Our previous Server Administrator. NEWadmin = Me. SALES@ = Our Sales Manager. Customer# = A Customer.   • Task scheduled to wake laptop - only works when lid is open

    I am running Windows 7 Starter on an Acer Aspire One laptop. I want my laptop to automatically run a task (backup the HDD to a network drive) once a week in the middle of the night. I scheduled the task in "Task Scheduler" and checked the box to wake the computer to run the task. I also changed the advanced power settings to allow wake timers. This was half of the solution. It now works flawlessly when the lid is open... the computer can wake itself up from either sleep or hibernate mode to perform the backup. When the lid is closed however, its sleeping beauty. Any ideas? I don't want to have to remember to open the lid once a week. It sort of defeats the purpose of an "automatic" backup. Update: I discovered that it can wake from sleep (or hybrid sleep), but not from hibernate when the lid is closed. This is good news. I'd still be curious about how to get it to work from hibernate, but I'm pretty happy about waking from sleep at least.

    I've been trying to install SQL Server on a new Windows Server 2008. I have tried everything but I haven't been able to narrow down the problem. When the installation fails I get " Exit code (Decimal): -2068643839". The problem with this is that according to Microsoft this is a generic error code. I follow their guide to look into the detail.txt inside C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\ But I can't find something that specifies the exact error. Any suggestions ?   • Prevent anonymous access to form and application pages in SharePoint 2010

    When you create a Publishing site that has anonymous access enabled, you will notice that anonymous users will not be able to access pages that reside in the “_layouts” virtual directory (e.g. http://siteX/_layouts/viewlsts.aspx). This is because the publishing infrastructure activates a hidden feature that prevents anonymous users from accessing these types of pages. However, if you were to create a site collection based of  Blank Site Template, you would notice that these pages are accessible by anonymous users. The fix is quite simple. There is a hidden feature that you would need to manually activate via stsadm. The feature is called “ViewFormPagesLockDown” (and is available in the Features folders in the 14 hive) To activate it: stsadm -o activatefeature -filename ViewFormPagesLockDown\feature.xml -url http://ServerName Once activated anonymous users will be promoted to enter credentials when they try to access form and application pages.   • Best Practices for Content Types in SharePoint

    Hi all, Recently, we came across a severe problem in production farm with the Content Types. I would like to explain the background of this problem first. We have nice working feature for Content Types installation in production and test farms. We developed and deployed (using wsps) this SharePoint feature in Visual studio. We are using the publishing pages using page layouts and Content Types to help content editors to quickly publish the web pages. Unfortunately, some Content Types have been manually updated/added by some people in the production, so whenever I (developer) make some changes to the existing Content Types (using Visual Studio and feature activation/deactivation) , SharePoint removes one or two columns (during feature activation/deactivation) from Content Types; or the columns which have not been added in a best practice way. I think the best practice is to update Content Types using Visual Studio. Now, I wish to ensure that site columns shouldn't get removed from Content Types upon feature activation/deactivation. Note: Our feature for Content Type activation/deactivation doesn't hold any activation dependencies in the feature.xml

    SharePoint Tools for Visual Studio 2010 provides a rudimentary mechanism for replaceable parameters that you can use in files that are not compiled, like ascx files and your project property settings. The basics on this can be found in the documentation at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee231545.aspx. There are some quirks however. For example: My Package name is MacawMastSP2010Templates, as defined in my Package properties: I want to use the $SharePoint.Package.Name$ replaceable parameter in my feature properties. But this parameter does not work in the “Deployment Path” property, while other parameters work there, while it works in the “Image Url” property. It just does not get expanded. So I had to resort to explicitly naming the first path of the deployment path: : You also see a special property for the “Receiver Class” in the format $SharePoint.Type.<GUID>.FullName$. The documentation gives the following description:The full name of the type matching the GUID in the token. The format of the GUID is lowercase and corresponds to the Guid.ToString(“D”) format (that is, xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). Not very clear. After some searching it happened to be the guid as declared in my feature receiver code: In other properties you see a different set of replaceable parameters: We use a similar mechanism for replaceable parameter for years in our Macaw Solutions Factory for SharePoint 2007 development, where each replaceable parameter is a PowerShell function. This provides so much more power.   • Marking Discussions as Answered

    As a contributor to a number of projects on CodePlex I really like the fact that the discussions feature exists but also I need ways to help me sort the discussions threads so I can make sure no-one is getting forgotten about. Seems like a lot of you agreed as the feature request Provide feature to allow Coordinators to mark Discussions threads as 'Answered' is our number 2 voted feature right now with 178 votes.  Today we rolled out the first iteration of “answer” support to discussions. In this first iteration we wanted to keep it simple and lightweight. The original poster of the thread along with project owners, developers or editors can mark any post to the thread as an answer. You can have any number of answers marked in a thread and it’s very quick to mark or unmark a post as an answer.  We deliberately keep the answers in the originally posted order so that you can see them in context with the discussion thread. When viewing discussions the default view is still to see everything, but you can easily filter by “Unanswered”.  You can even save that as a bookmark so as someone interested in the project can quickly jump to the unanswered discussion threads to go help out on. As I mention, we kept this first pass of the answering feature as simple and as lightweight as possible so that we can get some feedback on it. Head on over to the issue tracking this feature if you have any thoughts once you have used it for a bit or feel free to respond in the comments. I already have a couple of things I think we want to do such as a refresh of the look and feel of discussions in general along, make it easier to navigate to posts that are marked an answered and surface posts that you do that were marked as answered in your profile page - but if you have ideas then please let us know.
