  Hi, I am a php programmer. Ever since I started working in php industry, companies I worked with used zend framework, codeigniter, and cake php. So...in windows programming world, what are equivalent to zend framework, codeigniter, and cake php? The reason I am asking this question is because I am about to start windows programming.   The Web industry is shifting / has shifted towards using OAuth when extending API services to external consumers & developers. There is some elegance in simple....and well, the 3-step OAuth process isn't too bad ... i just find it is the best of a bad bunch of options. Are there alternatives out there that could be better, and more secure? • What's the most productive coding environment

  I was speaking with an ex-colleague the other day about the most productive way to write code and he said he found it best "to CIMP, or Code In My Pants". When I asked him exactly what he meant, he explained he found it best to work at home, coding at his own pace, dressed comfortably (in his pants), and communicating with his team through emails, IM, or the telephone. Digesting his approach (which he describes to clients as the Complete Integrated Method of Programming), I realised my coding is also more productive when working in an isolated environment, which made me wonder if the software industry has got it all wrong and should development be really done by dispersed teams of individuals, or are there advantages to geographical herding that make up for the added interruptions it brings? So has business got it wrong? Should development occur predominantly across geographically isolated individuals to increase productivity, or are there real reasons why herding developers together makes sense?

  Leviton Manufacturing is a global manufacturer of electrical wiring devices, data center connectivity solutions, and lighting energy mgmt systems. • Are these interview questions too difficult for entry-level C++ positions?

  I recently had a few interviews for programming jobs within the financial industry. I am looking for entry-level positions as I specify in the cover letter. However I am usually asked questions such as: - all two-letters commands you know in unix - representation of float/double numbers (ieee standard) - segmentation fault memory dump, and related issues - all functions you know to convert string to integer (not just atoi) - how to avoid virtual tables - etc.. Is that the custom? Because I don't think this kind of questions make sense for someone willing to get an entry-level job. Is it totally crazy to think that they should ask more conceptual questions? This is beginning to driving me nuts, honestly. Thanks

• Where can I find crash course in Java eclipse in Vancouver?

  I am not satisfied with what I learned in Java 101 in University. I feel like, lot of time is spent on trying to figure out how to write something in Java properly. I feel like, my lack of knowledge of Java and eclipse is slowing me down. I would like to pay for a detailed and intensive course in Java & Eclipse. I can read a book and read tutorials, but it seems harder to discipline myself. Where can I find such crash courses outside of university courses? I find lot of CS courses just show tip of the iceberg and not too much focused on actual application. I want to learn the latest industry skills and etc. I live in BC, Canada. I am thinking of BCIT, but not sure what they offer.

  I am just starting up a small website development business and one of the issues I am having is remembering passwords and account information for clients hosting, cpanel, ftp accounts etc. I was wondering what is the most suitable system / industry standard for controlling such information? Pretty marginal on the close there... • Should we design programs to randomly kill themselves?

  In a nutshell, should we design death into our programs, processes, and threads at a low level, for the good of the overall system? Failures happen. Processes die. We plan for disaster and occasionally recover from it. But we rarely design and implement unpredictable program death. We hope that our services' uptimes are as long as we care to keep them running. A macro-example of this concept is Netflix's Chaos Monkey, which randomly terminates AWS instances in some scenarios. They claim that this has helped them discover problems and build more redundant systems. What I'm talking about is lower level. The idea is for traditionally long-running processes to randomly exit. This should force redundancy into the design and ultimately produce more resilient systems. Does this concept already have a name? Is it already being used in the industry?

• Vim and emacs usage/use case/user statistics

  I wonder if there are statistical documents/research based on use of the two major text editors, in which amount of usage is compared to use case, be it programming language, industry, user age, OS and/or many other things I can't think of now. I don't need this information for an assignment/homework or something, I'm just curious about it. I've been searching this for some time, not very intensively, and only thing I have found was this: Emacs user base size Lastly, I want to denote that I'm not looking for estimations. • How to interpret Google's "Avg. Page Load Time"?

  Is there any industry rule of thumb for what's considered an unacceptable load time v. an OK one v. a blistering fast one? We're just reviewing some Google Analytics data and getting 0.74 Avg. Page Load Time reported. I guess that's OK. However it would be good if some meatier comparison data were available, or a blog post, or somewhere where there's some analysis of what speeds are generally being achieved by various kinds of sites. Any useful links to help someone interpret these speeds? If you Google it you just get a lot of results dealing with how to improve your speed. We're not at that stage yet.

• Help deciding on an area of study for a PhD [closed]

  I am going to start a PhD in about 1 year. My undergraduate degree is in computer science and my master's is in artificial intelligence. I want to get ideas about what's going to be hot in say 5 years i.e. what could I spend 3-4 years studying to potentially have expertise that will be applicable to industry and the computing world ? Impossible to answer factually but some ideas and thoughts would be great. I have narrowed my ideas down to AI (yes, even more AI) and information security. AI seems to becoming popular again but security is always a going to be useful. From a career point of view, if I were to stay working in software development then this might actually be the best move but I've always wanted to do a PhD! Many thanks :).

  I am currently taking Business IT Foundation Degree course which involves SDLC and its my first year. I will be going out in the industry for the second year and I would just like to know some facts before launching out. I have been asked to create a system to enable the company to manage their staff and also to create a windows based system where users can register, view their details and so on. I am required to create: Several UML use case diagrams A conceptual class Diagram Test cases and test logs These have to been done for the windows based system. My concern is that I am not sure what a windows based system is and secondly I am having difficulties creating the diagrams as I am not familiar with them. Could anyone be kind enough to explain what they are and how I go about doing them please? Thank you.

• When choosing a domain does including your brand affect SEO performance?

  I've been asked to build a "landing page" for a local branch of an international corporation. While the corporation has a well-established domain name, the local office wants to use a unique, separate url that will be easy for them to relay to clients. However, the corporation is considered a category leader, so the local office is also concerned about the importance to carrying over the company's brand to the URL. Questions that have arisen: From an SEO perspective, is there a benefit to including the brand name in the URL? Would it be more beneficial to buy a domain that relates generically to the INDUSTRY as opposed to the specific brand name? Would the benefits of an easy-to-remember, short domain outweigh any SEO benefits that might be gained by a longer, brand-specific domain?

• Whats the right program for me?

  I would like to learn C++ so I can get a job in the game industry, but there are so many options it a little confusing. I know most of you will say I should read up on C++ before attempting to program it but I learn best by doing things rather then reading. That being said I don't understand some of the thing suggested on other questions, because I've read a few trying to find whats right for me, so putting things in the simplest terms would be helpful. I've been making a couple of games 2d using gamemaker and if theres a C++ equivalent that would be perfect, but if not possible I would like an IDE that allows me to easily continue making 2d games, and is fairly simple to learn. Having a 2d sprite editor would be a nice plus but I can understand if its not every thing I want in one program
