Therefore is used lm = (LocationManager) getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE); lm.requestLocationUpdates(LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 1000, 0, this); Then i used the public void onLocationChanged(Location location) { method to read the altitude of my current location. But i dont really know what Location.getAltitude() returns. The document says it returns the altitude. But is this in meters? or feets? if i put the phone on the desk next to me, this value changes between 500 and -500?? How does this really work???

• Why use C++ when C works for large projects equally well?

  Before I start, please DO NOT make this into a C vs C++ flamewar. This question has nothing to do with which language is better or not. Period. I have read that C++ is said to be fit for large projects. After all, it makes managing code easier. OO and other features, for example the STL. But then why use C++ when C works equally well for large projects? Take the example of the Linux kernel. Or GNOME. Or even Windows I guess, it is written in C right? So why bother at all with the complexity of C++ (templates and all that), when C works well and this is not just a statement, but proper examples have been quoted. If it works for projects of magnitude of the kernel, why is C++ preferred or why is C not used for almost all projects?

• Dead (nearly blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - how to fix?

  My laptop screen is black while my secondary screen is fine. What I tried: setting brightness (Fn keys) - no effect, no change seen, also on secondary screen removing static electricity like suggested here - no effect restarting / charging battery, running on battery / "wall" power - no effect as well wait to see if warming it up helps - it doesn't follow official Ubuntu diagnostics - checking now... What I will try next: check last updates I've made IIRC I am running on nomodeset already, but can't recall how to verify this Further symptoms: can't see BIOS screen system loads and works fine, just screen has problems screen works (occasionally I could glimpse very dimly what was going on, but it was like with minimum brightness set - nearly non-distinguishable from just a black screen) Any ideas how to proceed best? What is most probable cause?

• Virtualbox shared folder mount from fstab fails; works once bootup is complete

  I've got Ubuntu 13.10 installed in Virtualbox 4.3. The host machine is Windows. I have a couple of Virtualbox shared folders being mounted by /etc/fstab. Until recently this setup worked just fine, but after upgrading from Ubuntu 13.04 and Virtualbox 4.2 (at essentially the same time) the fstab mounting stopped working. I get the following error during boot: An error occurred while mounting /home/benme/Documents. keys:Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery Pressing M for manual recovery and then trying to mount manually also fails: root@benme-vb:~# cd /home/benme root@benme-vb:/home/benme# mount Documents /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device But if I instead skip mounting during boot, wait for Unity to start and then mount manually in a shell, everything works fine: benme-vb ~ % ls Documents benme-vb ~ % sudo mount Documents [sudo] password for benme: benme-vb ~ % ls Documents # actual file list omitted Note that when I mount manually I'm letting mount take all the options from /etc/fstab, and it works. This suggests to me that it's some sort of timing issue, where Virtualbox isn't "ready" to provide the shared file mounts at the point /etc/fstab mounts are run during bootup. Here's the fstab line, just for completeness: Documents /home/benme/Documents vboxsf uid=benme,gid=benme,dmode=774,fmode=664 0 0 Is there something I can do about this from the Ubuntu side? Or does anyone happen to know more about this from the Virtualbox angle? I've found an old report on the Virtualbox bug-tracker with identical symptoms, but in that case the user had updated Virtualbox without updating their guest additions and resolving that fixed the problem; this isn't happening here, I've definitely got the 4.3 guest additions installed.

  My laptop screen is (almost) black while my secondary screen is fine. I believe it to be backlight / brightness related. Problem description it starts when I start the laptop system loads and works fine, just screen has problems I can see the screen though very faintly / dimly - it's hard to see anything which ain't very white e.g. starting screen has big Thinkpad logo in white, large font - I can see it, though very dimly second screen works very well Official backligtht debugging: using acpi setting as prescribed there for Thinkpads didn't help I can see an entry in /sys/class/backlight/ and it changes when I press hotkeys for brightness (current backlight power for instance goes up or down) acpi-off didn't helpm neither did acpi_backlight=vendor Hardware data Laptop is Thinkpad Edge with glossy screen. 4 processors, 2 cores, exemplary CPU data from cat /proc/cpuinfo reports Genuine Intel i5 (M 480 @ 2.67GHz). The link below is a picture about my architecture. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0BxSXbpgYIZVOR212RVk4ZDN1Sm8.      The pic above shows the architecture right now and it works correctly ! which means I could visit apache with url https//apchehost:8080, could not visit the web app with https served by weblogic but I could visit these app with https served by Apache(Apache is proxy server).      My question is why the Apache is configured with ssl but weblogic without ssl works ? I think weblogic should also configured with ssl . If this works , what about security level ? Is the ssl really works if only Apache configured with ssl but Weblogic without it ? • Canon MG8150 - unable to scan document to PC via wireless router, but works via USB connection?

  Please help. Get error that scanner disconnected or locked "code:5,146,555" when I try to scan a document to PC or attach to an email. Can't remember this function ever working and I've had this MFD for 2-3 years now. Printer function works fine via wireless, but not scanning. Upgraded my laptop a few months ago from Windows 98 to Windows Vista and reinstalled my printer/scanner software and drivers. Any ideas?

For example, Creating a file.h containing declarations, then creating a file.cpp containing definitions and including both on the main.cpp. Or, creating a file.cpp containing declaration/definitions ( no prototypes ) Including it on the main.cpp. Both worked for me , but still can't the difference since i do not have a background on the compiling and linking process .

• Live CD works OK. Is it OK to assume a new install will work?

  I've got a Toshiba a505 laptop and tried the live CD with great results. However, I haven't found any reports on this PC working 100% OK on Ubuntu 10.10 yet. I do have seen (and tried installing myself) some reports that 10.04 didn't work (without some dirty hacking). In regular circumstances, is it OK to assume that a new install will work if the live CD works? Are there any tools I can run to check compatibility? Thanks!

  I would like to know how the installer, and in particular the guided partitioning for Ubuntu Server 12.04 works under the hood. I'm not interested in documentation, I want to check out the real scripts and the logic in them. How do you recommend I dig into this? Where on the ISO are these parts located? I don't know what the installer for Ubuntu is called, or how it is configured. I am well versed in programming languages and command line GNU/Linux.

• Gnome-shell freezes. What to do to keep apps open, like "alt+f2 r" when GS works

  This is a repost, because no one had popper solution. What to do when gnome-shell freezes? Everything works correctly (music is still playing etc.), just the gui freezes. I am able to ctrl+alt+f1. What can I do after logging in the ctrl+alt+f1 terminal, in order to restore gnome-shell? If gnome-shell worked, I'd just hit alt+f2 and run r. I usually end up sudo rebooting which I don't like, because I have to reopen apps.

• QapTcha error issue. Works locally, not on live server [migrated]

  I am adding QapTcha (http://demos.myjqueryplugins.com/qaptcha/) to a website that I am working on and I'm getting the error "Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'error' of null". What's weird to me is everything is working perfectly locally. No errors or anything. Once I uploaded via ftp to the live server, I get the above error. • UDK - How to make sure a PhysicalMaterial mask actually works?

  Hello, I have been reading the documentation for UDK about physical materials and masks. I have my 1bit BMP mask, and the two physical material assets I want to shoot off in the black and white channels. I have applied my material to both a rigid body and to a skeletal mesh and neither apparently uses the mask. If I assign a regular physical material (one that doesn't use a mask) then it will work fine, but this defeats the point because it gives only one hit reaction. In the documentation it states that it is possible to extend a class on which we want to use a physical material based on the KActor class's usage. How to do that? Here is the quote: "The following properties [ie, ImpactEffect - Particle system to spawn at the point of impact + ImpactSound - Sound to play when an impact occurs] allow you to attach sounds and effects to physical collisions. These only work on classes which support them, which at the moment is only KActor. By looking at the implementation in KActor though, you can add this functionality to other classes (or you can subclass KActor)." Essentially, how to make sure a PhysicalMaterial mask actually works? What code could be added to a skeletal mesh class perhaps, to get it going? Any help appreciated.

• Is there a PROPRIETARY driver (NVIDIA or ATI) that actually works with 12.10?

  NOTE: I see many similar topics on this, but I've tried all their suggestions, and nothing has worked. THE MAIN DIFFERENCE SEEMS TO BE: I always get a black screen with a blinking cursor, while others seem to get through the boot-up and see distorted graphics or just their wallpaper. ISSUE: I do a clean install of Ubuntu 12.10. Boots fine with the “nouveau” graphics driver – graphics (even just menus) are very slow, choppy, and distorted. The three other driver options in Ubuntu (official NVIDIA drivers), all result in a variation of the black screen on boot up. There will be NO access to a command line/GUI in anyway what-so-ever (tried every option recommended out there, but the system is unusable at this stage). I can only reinstall, and try different drivers…and I only ever get one shot at it. QUESTIONS: -Does anyone know of a PROPRIETARY driver that will actually work on 12.10 with a NVIDIA or ATI card? -Should I just buy a newer graphics card to put in as a replacement? MORE INFO: This is my second computer, and I’m just trying to get a working install of Ubuntu on it. I don’t want to put much money into it, as I have seen Ubuntu run great on much older/less capable machines. I’ve got a decent'ish Core2Duo Intel processor (2.13Ghz), 2GB of RAM, 320GB hard drive, 32-bit architecture, and there is no other O/S installed. It appears as if the graphics card (NVIDIA Geforce 7350 LE) is holding me back. TRIED SO FAR: -all drivers available in Ubuntu *all fail -manual install of some different NVIDIA drivers *all fail -also tried installing the generic kernel, Nvidia driver doesn't work in 12.10 *no difference -tried installing 12.04 *same results -every method suggested to at least get a command line after switching to a NVIDIA driver *all fail -UPDATE- Re-tried everything above with a new NVIDIA Geforce 210...same results for everything. -UPDATE #2- Re-tried everything above with a new AMD Radeon HD 6450...installed the proprietary driver from Ubuntu's "Software Sources" menu...EVERYTHING NOW WORKS. • New mainboard with 890GX chipset disables lightdm, even when using old graphics card instead of onboard graphics, startx works (Xubuntu 12.04)

  I am trying to migrate an installed Xubuntu 12.04 to a new mainbaord with 890GX chipset. The Chipset has a built-in Radeon HD 4290 graphics. The system boots, but X won't start. The most suspicious message in Xorg.0.log is "ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log". When searching for this message, I found some answers like "remove your xorg.conf" (but there is none on my system). Or bug reports for fglrx (but that's not installed on my system). Or NVidia-related questions ... Interestingly, "startx" succeeds in opening a basic XFCE session. Then, I tried to disable the onboard graphics in the BIOS setup and use the old PCIe graphics card (Radeon HD 5450). No change. I don't think I can just blacklist a module, because the graphics card and the onboard graphics are covered by the same module. At the moment, use the free radeon drivers, not the restricted fglrx driver. If possible, I would like to stay on the free driver for two reasons: The fglrx driver from the ubuntu packages fails to build the kernel module. In past, I had bad experiences with the fglrx driver and changing screen config with RandR. When I connect the harddisk and the graphics card to my old mainboard, everything works again. This means, I have not screwed up my system configuration wile installing and removing the fglrx drivers. When I ordered this mainboard, I thought the 890GX is old enough to be supported and if not, I could still use my graphics card as backup solution. But without even the backup soluton, I'm screwed ... Any ideas ? Thanks and Regards, Kubuntu-Man (now switched to Xubuntu)
