• Using Samba to share a folder from a Linux guest with a Windows host in VirtualBox

  I would like to share a folder from a Linux Guest with a Windows host (with read and write access if possible) in VirtualBox. I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and I need more information on how to proceed. So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and install Samba on the Linux guest, but now I have the following questions: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that need to be executed on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this? Thanks!

• Remote desktop to multiple windows machines on a LAN with dynamic IP

  Is it possible to use remote desktop to connect to multiple computers inside a network that has a dynamic IP address? I use a netgear WPN824 router which has dyndns onboard - but I currently use No-IP to control a single computer that I use most frequently. Every so often I need to get onto a couple of other computers in the network, but don't know how to go about this without logging onto one computer, and then starting another RDC session from that machine. What I would like to be able to do is connect to my router, and be able to see a list of connected devices, and then choose which to remote desktop onto. - I appreciate this probably is not be possible, but any other suggestions are welcome!

  i wrote a CD with an iso-image from debian.org. the debian-7.5.0-amd64-CD-1.iso from this folder. Debian Wheezy 7.5 stable 64bit There was an error at Select and install software step. It said Retrieving file 770 from 800 and then it failed the installation. I continued the instal and when i opened the computer it doesn't work the Ctrl + Alt + F7 as i waited. It starts at tty1 and after logging in i edited config file cause it had a lot of errors and said E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages or Couldn't found the package.   Can anybody recommend a linux compatible touchscreen monitor, the criteria are: 19inch or greater 1920x1080 or better only single touch required be able to operate in portait mode We currently have some IIyama Prolite MTS2250MS monitors but these do not natively support portait mode and we have had little success getting the touch functionality working in Linux (although they do report themselves as HID devices when plugged in). So an alternative to suggesting a monitor would be pointers to information on how we could get the IIyama monitor working in Linux.

  I've got a dedicated server running Debian 6. I've set up a windows 7 virtual machine using KVM. Now I'm trying to get Remote desktop working. I'm guessing i have to do some port forwarding. The virtual machine is in a NAT. Remote desktop is already set up on it (another virtual machine can connect). I've tried using the iptables and countless of virsh commands of which I'm not even sure what they did. Anyone knows how to get this working?

• How to increase Remote Desktop resolution?

  I'm using Windows 7 on a PC and connect to it via Remote Desktop Connection for Mac by MS, using a Mac. On the Mac, I have a 27" Display with 2560 x 1440 px resolution. The PC has a high performance graphics card (one of those that needs an additional power supply). Both machines are connected via network cable to a router. So network should be insanely fast. However, the max resolution I can get is 1400 x 1050. The PC just has a old and bad 21" monitor connected to it. How can I increase the resolution to 2560 x 1440 to work fullscreen with the Apple LED Cinema Display via Remote Desktop? Maybe I shouldn't even ask, because I already experience some lag at the low resolution of 1400 x 1050. But I guess this can be resolved as well?

I would like to buy a hardware for that and i am trying to understand if i should buy a desktop and host the webserver on that or do i have to buy some used server from ebay and host on it. • PPTP: Linux clients unreachable

  I have setup a PPTP server on a CentOS 6 box. Several clients (Windows and Linux) connect to this server. All clients use the same subnet. All clients (Win or Lin) can surf the Internet using the VPN successfully. Windows clients can ping any other Windows client (XP/Vista/7) connected to VPN. Linux clients (KVPNC) can ping any Windows client (XP/Vista/7) connected to VPN. So far so good. But there's this weird problem and I've been trying to figure it out with no luck: No client can ping (reach) a Linux client (successfully) connected to VPN. And yes, the firewall is completely disabled. I'd really appreciate any hint/idea. TIA, EDIT: The ultimate goal of this is to share services across the VPN, like accessing a HTTPD running on a Linux box from a Windows client.

  Hi there, I've been a linux user for years. Very used to the bash shell, used to linux shell key mappings that come with most mainstream distros. I'm also a happy vim user in linux & love my arrow keys. Just started a job where 90% of the systems are solaris & the default shell for administrators is ksh. The key mappings, things like autocomplete & history not working they way they should and is driving me insane. I've been told that i can change solaris bash, but it still doesn't feel like linux.   I got stuck with one problem I cant find solution. I have linux pc with two NIC. first nic (eth1) is connected to public ip (probably switch or whatever, doesnt really mater) so eth1 is connected to wan and another eth0 that I connected to switch and make it a lan nic. configuration: eth1 ip address 88.200.1xx.xxx //xxx's are cuz of security reasons eth0 ip address 192.168.1.1 wan ------ [eth1 (linux PC) eth0]<----[switch]<---- [eth1 (PC1)] Now I want to connect this two networks, so PC1 can access linux PC and wan. I think I know how to do it but I cant confiugre it right. This is what I tried: I turend on ip forwarding (for sure) I set eth1 default gw to the right ip on the wan I tried to set eth0 default gw to the same ip (but i couldnt) What or how can I do this, I was trying with linux route command, but I got stuck. Please help.

  I just started a job using a Mac. I also have a Mac at home. The IT dpt here does not know how to remote login to my desktop from home. They installed the Cisco VPN client and game an account for that. I think at this point I need some remote desktop software to login to my work Machine. I looked online and downloaded the free version of TeamViewer. I didn't really understand how to use it. I have my work computer's name, and was hoping that would be enough to login, but I think I am mising a piece of the puzzle. Any thoughts on how to login to my work computer? Thanks.

This is what I have done, and it doesn't seem to work: generated public and private keys using Putty Key Generator (on Windows) saved the files as id_rsa.pub and id_rsa copied them into ~/.ssh added id_rsa.pub to the Linux box in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys I then try to ssh to the Linux box from Windows and I still have to enter a password Am I missing something?

  I have a brand new Windows 7 laptop, I've changed the desktop background picture using the "personalization" item of the desktop right click menu. Below the list that of images to choose there's a drop down with options "stretch", "fit", "tile", etc. When I change that from stretch to anything else nothing happens, and when I return to that dialog the drop down is still on "stretch".   I'm looking for a remote desktop product that will allow me to switch on the fly between how many monitors the desktop is using. This would be going from one Windows 7 machine to another, one is running Ultimate, the other Enterprise. I know I can use Windows RDP with multi-monitor support, but it seems that only allows me to use ALL monitors, and if I switch to a windowed view, I get huge scrollbars because I'm going from 3 monitors to 1 window. What I'm looking for is something that will allow me to switch from 1, 2, or 3 monitor displays without restarting the RDP and would end up with a true 1/2/3 display - ie, if I go from 3 monitors to 1, or a window, I don't get scrollbars. Is there any such product?

  OK I've been searching for about 2 1/2 hours now and can't seem to find an answer. I work with window's remote desktop everyday to connect to clients. My problem is when I have several remote desktop windows open, I can't tell them apart when minimized in the taskbar. Is there a way to disable status of the window. So for example, my remote window at top reads out "Connected to OWNERXX (clientsusername)" I want to disable the CONNECTED TO OWNERXX while keeping the (clientsusername) visible at the top of the window and while it's minimized. Any help is much appreciated.

  I have a remote desktop connection (from my home) to the company's server. On this I opened a Remote Desktop Connection Manager and inside this connect to a specific server. I was busy copying a file but this task never ends. So I kill the process and now I have a blue screen and no more taskbar. Very frustrating. When I try CTRL+ALT+END (=CTRL+ALT+DEL) this is executed on the main server and not the server which gives me the blue screen. I don't know if I'm clear. I know I should have keep Task Manager open and type Run... explorer.exe but I closed it. Any help is really appreciated!
