    Apache's module mod_env offers a handy way of setting environment variables in configuration files, like: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName xyz.com DocumentRoot /var/www/rails_app/public PassengerAppRoot /var/www/rails_app SetEnv MY_VARIABLE contents </VirtualHost> http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mod_env.html#setenv However, in nginx I couldn't find anything that serves the same purpose. What's the alternative here? I thought of setting environment variables in .profile files (I am using Ubuntu 10.04), but that wouldn't have the same "per vHost" isolation I have with Apache, right? What are the alternatives here?

    Possible Duplicate: Why do we need private variables? I know that it's best practice to stay safe, and that we should always prevent others from directly accessing a class' properties. I hear this all the time from university professors, and I also see this all the time in a lot of source code released on the App Hub. In fact, professors say that they will actually take marks off for every variable that gets declared public. Now, this leaves me always declaring variables as private. No matter what. Even if each of these variables were to have both a getter and a setter. But here's the problem: it's tedious work. I tend to quickly lose interest in a project every time I need to have a variable in a class that could have simply been declared public instead of private with a getter and a setter. So my question is, do I really need to declare all my variables private? Or could I declare some variables public whenever they require both a getter and a setter?

  • How to access Ubuntu Server from local PC?

    Today I installed my first web server, which is Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I got Apache, PHP and MySql working, there is even MyPHPAdmin! Everything is working fine on that PC, but the problem is that I have no idea how to connect to this server from my PC. Just to clarify- I got one PC that I work on and got another one, which has Ubuntu Server running. I even managed to connect them through the router, which I made to work as a switch. I can see the Ubuntu Server on my Windows PC in "Network", but it's empty, I can't see any files. I tried to share a folder etc/www on Server, but it shows an error saying something about right, that I'm not this folder's owner. I guess I'm not doing the right thing at all, am I? Even if I could see shared folder on my Windows PC- I would still be not able to type "somedomain.com" on Windows PC and access for example index.php or MySql database. So, the question is- how do I configure Ubuntu Server to be accessible from Windows PC?

    I am working with a web application, using TFS. Every time I build the site it takes an unproductivly long time to start up again. I would like to have a second mapping of the site on my c drive, where I would only get latest and build once a day, so this version would always be fast. This would be like a "readonly" directory as I wouldn't personally make any edits to it. Please let me know if this possible, or if you have any alternative.

    My intended goal: I maintain some files in my local computer, and I also share them with others by putting them on my website. In the past I did this by manually uploading all the files using FTP, every time I did some modifications etc. Now, I am wondering if I can use Git to help me achieve this (by "pushing" the local files to my website server). My server is hosted by Dreamhost. First Attempt: First, I try this tutorial. I first push my local files to my Github repo, and ssh into my Dreamhost server to clone --bare from the Github repo. But I find that git does not transfer my files. So I ignore the tutorial. Second Attempt: I ssh into my Dreamhost server to clone directly from Github. My files are all transfered to the server. Then, on my local computer, I git remote add dreamhost ssh://[email protected]/~/my-project. Then I add some files, and commit, and git push dreamhost master.     I'm wondering which is a more effective storage method in java. Would be better to save variables that will not change in a class or a resource? They're going to be variables that contain a set amount so that later a search program will go through the list of variables so as to recognize possible options.     I think that running this code you will get excactly what I mean. I want to register 5 names to a register(people). I loop 5 times and in each loop I have a variable newPerson which is supposed to save all information about a person and then be added to the people register. In this example only the names of the people are being registered for simplicity. The problem is that in the end all people turn to have the same name: "Petra". I playied a bit with this but can't get a reasonable reason for this behaviour.     I need two different versions of ruby on a server. The packaged ruby for the packaged puppet to work, and a compiled ruby for a rails web app to work. So basically I want the default ruby to be the ruby from the package, and for rails to use the compiled ruby (in /usr/local/bin/ and /usr/local/lib/ ) I've found references to setting the RUBYPATH and RUBYLIB environment variables, but I'm confused as to where to set them. In .bashrc, .profile, in the apache config somewhere?

    Per this question I need to call via code the following paths: Windows 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe Windows 2008: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe Ideally I could use the environment variable %localdata%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe but this does not work for me in Windows 2003. Should it? How can I refer to this path in both systems using environment variables?

    I've been using xdebug to do php debugging (netbeans or eclipse). I am usually able to inspect variables OK. However, sometimes when I expand a disclosure triangle for a variable -- typically when the client is making an AJAX call -- it will result in an empty response being returned and causing the AJAX call to fail. Has anyone run into this? Is there a way to make PHP debugging with xdebug more robust? (Not being able to inspect variables defeats the purpose of a debugger. Thanks

    I know that in C++, I can declare variables pretty much everywhere. I recall once reading that in C, variables must be declared at the top of a function i.e. the following is invalid: void foo() { int good; if (...) { int bad; } } In the above code, is the declaraing of the bad varaible legal by C standards, or only legal due to a gcc extension?
