• Log4net 1.2.10 running on .NET 1.1 and 2.0 not compatible

  I have old code that uses log4net version 1.2.10 targeted for the .NET 1.1 platform. My current code uses lognet version 1.2.10 targeted for the .NET 2.0 platform When I mix the old and new code all hell breaks loose. Code written today on .NET 4.0 and VS2010 can use the 2.0 log4net dll just fine. but if I put in the 1.1 version, it breaks. Conversely, the old dlls will break if I use the 2.0 log4net dll. I do not want to force my old dlls onto 2.0. Is there a good solution? I guess what bugs me most is that the log4net has the same version number, but I cannot fool my code and dlls into working with a single version.

• Working with multiple jQuery libraries and Prototype.

  Ok, i saw some other posts about this sort of thing, but not exactly related. This is not what I want to do, but need to do unfortunately. We have in this order right now Prototype 1.6 jQuery 1.2.6 with noConflict on jQuery with j I need to add jQuery 1.4.2 in that mix as well. It will always be the last one loaded. No option. Is there anyway i can do this currently? I know this is not good, yada, yada, but it has to be done for now unfortunately. Thanks, Derek

  We are using Linq-to-SQL with stored Procedures we need help on one of our problem. We are having user tables which is having all field required for user table like firstname,lastname and other fields that table is also there in our DBML files.Now the problem is that we are having a stored procedure that is mapped to table-User returning a field called fullname (Combination of firstname and lastname)which is not there in usertable. So what is the best way to slove this. Another thing is that one of other stored procedure return inner join of two tables with mix columns in this case how can i mapped that stored procedure with Table mapped info class in our dbml files.

• Adding more OR searches with CONTAINS Brings Query to Crawl

  I have a simple query that relies on two full-text indexed tables, but it runs extremely slow when I have the CONTAINS combined with any additional OR search. As seen in the execution plan, the two full text searches crush the performance. If I query with just 1 of the CONTAINS, or neither, the query is sub-second, but the moment you add OR into the mix the query becomes ill-fated. The two tables are nothing special, they're not overly wide (42 cols in one, 21 in the other; maybe 10 cols are FT indexed in each) or even contain very many records (36k recs in the biggest of the two). I was able to solve the performance by splitting the two CONTAINS searches into their own SELECT queries and then UNION the three together. Is this UNION workaround my only hope? Thanks. • Logical xor operator in c++?

  Is there such a thing? First time I encountered a practical need for it, but I don't see one listed in stroustrup. I intend to write: // Detect when exactly one of A,B is equal to five. return (A==5) ^^ (B==5); But there is no ^^ operator. Can I use bitwise ^ here and get the right answer (regardless of machine representation of true and false)? I never mix & and &&, or | and ||, so I hesitate to do that with ^ and ^^. I'd be more comfortable writing my own "bool XOR(bool,bool)" function instead.

• how can I "force" a branch upon the trunk, in the case I can't "reintegrate"?

  We created a branch from the trunk on which a major refactoring was done. Meanwhile, the trunk advanced a few revisions with some fixes. We don't want these changes on the branch, so we don't want to "catch-up" merge the trunk to the branch, because we don't want to mix the old and new code. But without this I can't reintegrate the branch back to the trunk. Is there a way to impose the branch on the trunk "as-is"? (an idea I considered is to undo ("reverse-merge") the trunk back to the revision where the branch started, and then it is safe to merge it on branch - nothing should happen. Then I can reintegrate. • thinking sphinx ordering by mixing capitals and lower case

  I have a rails application that is using thinking_sphinx for the searching. My problem is that the result returned is sorted with capitals first and lower case after it at the bottom. I'd like to mix them so that both 'A' and 'a' comes before 'B'. • jeditable accidentally triggering on Draggable on nested items

  I'm using jquery-ui's draggable for drag-and-drop, and jeditable for inline editing. When I drag and drop an element that's also editable, right after it's dropped jeditable kicks in and pops into 'edit mode'. How can I disable this behavior? Edit - the problem happens because of netsting - see this example. I also added draggable to the mix to make the example more realistic (the actual real problem is in this site that I'm working on) Note - even though this question has an accepted answer because of the bounty rules, the problem is still not resolved for me.

• How should I build a gaming community

  I've been wanting to build my own gaming community site (like http://fragbite.com) for a long time, I have started many times but just quitted after a couple days because it gets very messy I've been palying around with php and mysql off and on for 3 years but i've never gotten in to oop. i have tried but i usually end up with the "old php". I usually build my pages like so that i include a file on top of all pages with neccasary functions, html head etc. And I mix php and html together which I dont mind but if I eventually would get a designer he would not like it i think. I have tried both phpcake and codeigniter and all those popular mvc's but its just to much, like they do all the work. i want to do it myself. but i dont know where to start. What would you do if you were me? Is there maybe some non-oop mvc? (Sorry for my english)

  Many js files are included into Scripts folder by default in ASP.NET MVC 2 Projects. I suppose developers use jquery library nearly every time they program a site, but what about other files? Please, can you tell scenarios and reasons when you: Use Microsoft.Ajax instead of jquery or mix both libraries? Do you use JQuery validation infrastructure instead of asp.net mvc one, or combine them both? Thank you in advance! P.S. there are also diferrent editions of the same file. Do you include different editions depenending on debug/release build?

• How should I deal with sqlite errors?

  I have a long running application written in a mix of C and C++ that stores data in sqlite. While I am confident that committed data will remain available (barring mechanical failure) and uncommitted data will not be, it's not clear to me what I can do with this sort of middle state. I do a large number of inserts in a transaction and then commit it. When an error occurs on a given statement, I can schedule it to be attempted at some point in the future. It sounds like some errors might implicitly rollback my transaction (which would be undesirable if true). A larger problem is what happens when my commit itself fails. Currently, I'm just going to continue to retry it until it works. I would expect that whatever would cause my commit to fail may very well also cause a rollback to fail. What is the recommended mechanism for error handling in such a situation?

• How do you deal with the more mundane parts of programming tasks?

  My experience as a developer is that many projects or tickets are a mix of a short and focused very interesting task (e.g., designing some API or a platform to solve something) and a lot of repetitive and mundane tasks that cannot be automated (such as certain refactorings to use the API or platform, implementation of certain tests, some GUI handling, etc). I believe that this is the nature of our profession, unless we are high-level architects or managements and can delegate this work. The only item in my personal arsenal when dealing with these tasks is to devote some of my attention to radio or audiobooks (preferably not in English as I find it hard to concentrate on two "streams" of English at the same time). I maintain sufficient attention to carry the task and don't lose concentration as fast. I'm wondering how others cope with these and maintain concentration.

• Storing user settings in table - how?

  I have settings for the user about 200 settings, these include notice settings and tracing settings from user activities on objects. The problem is how to store it in the DB? Should each setting be a row or a column? If colunm then table will have 200 colunms. If row then about 3 colunms but 200 rows per user x even 10 million users = not good. So how else can i store all these settings? NOTE: these settings are a mix of text entry and FK lookups to other tables. Thanks.

• String.split() - matching leading empty String prior to first delimiter?

  I need to be able to split an input String by commas, semi-colons or white-space (or a mix of the three). I would also like to treat multiple consecutive delimiters in the input as a single delimiter. Here's what I have so far: String regex = "[,;\\s]+"; return input.split(regex); This works, except for when the input string starts with one of the delimiter characters, in which case the first element of the result array is an empty String. I do not want my result to have empty Strings, so that something like, ",,,,ZERO; , ;;ONE ,TWO;," returns just a three element array containing the capitalized Strings. Is there a better way to do this than stripping out any leading characters that match my reg-ex prior to invoking String.split? Thanks in advance!

• How to know if a PDF contains only images or has been OCR scanned for searching?

  I have a bunch of PDF files that came from scanned documents. The files contain a mix of images and text. Some were scanned as images with no OCR, so each PDF page is one large image, even where the whole page is entirely text. Others were scanned with OCR and contain images and searchable text where text is present. In many cases even words in the images were made searchable. I want to make an automated process to recognize the text in all of the scanned documents using OCR, with Acrobat 8 Pro, but I don't want to re-OCR the files that have already been through the OCR process in the past. Does anyone know if there is a way to tell which ones contain only images, and which ones already contain searchable text? I'm planning on doing this in C# or VB.NET but I don't think being able to tell the two kinds of files apart is language dependent.

It will be a spy programm for our company, so the IT Admin and Managment can see what the people are doing or not. (Only for explayning, please don't discuss about "uhhh tahts not ok"). I must choose a language for that. My best knowlegde is in C#.Net and VB.Net, but one main feature should be: No framework must be installed - so DotNet is out of the run. I decided to VB6 and a few minutes ago I ask for a IDE and some people say: Don't use it, it's too old. So, I must ask: What language do you prefer for such an project?

• (Secure) alternative to TLS / SSLv3 ?

  Toying with an idea for a F2F networked application I've just been reading up on secure communication. I quickly settled with the idea of using TLS / SSL as the basis for any communication since it employs Public Key encryption at the protocol level and thus is perfect for my needs. However I was surprised to read (on wikipedia) that the newest version of TLS, SSLv3 uses a mix of MD5 and SHA-1 "because if any vulnerability was found in one of these algorithms the other would prevent it from compromising SSLv3". However, as I take it, lately both have been found flawed ! So my questions are thus: Does this not mean that SSLv3 is basically flawed, or am I not reading close enough ? And if so does a "secure" alternative to SSLv3 exist ?

• ASP.Net website makes browser load unwanted (non-referenced) plugins

  I've found that some of my ASP.Net web apps prompt the browser to load plugins that I'm not explicitely using and certainly haven't deliberately referenced in the project settings. Two that come to mind are for MS MediaPlayer and the "SVG Viewer for Netscape". The only commonality I've determined so far is that the two sites/apps affected both use Master pages (nested in some cases). We don't use SVG file types (just the normal mix of jpg/gif/png) and no video/audio (not yet anyway). Can anyone provide a hint as to where the references for these might be creeping in? e.g. Is it a server-level include? Or a .Net runtime default when using master pages? Does anyone else even experience this, or is it just me? No urgency, I'd just like to remove it if possible. Thanks. Al

  Hey guys I have a query and it works fine, but I want to add another table to the mix. The invite table I want to add has two fields: username and user_invite. Much like this site, I am using a point system to encourage diligent users. The current query which is displayed below adds the up votes and down votes based on the user in question: $creator. I want to count the number of entries for that same user from the invite table, and add 50 for each row it finds to the current output/sum of my query. Is this possible with one query, or do I need two?   I'm having a little problem with constant scope in mixin modules. Let's say I have something like this module Auth USER_KEY = "user" unless defined? USER_KEY def authorize user_id = session[USER_KEY] def end The USER_KEY constant should default to "user" unless it's already defined. Now I might mix this into a couple of places, but in one of those places the USER_KEY needs to be different, so we might have something like this class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base USER_KEY = "my_user" include Auth def test_auth authorize end end I would expect that USER_KEY would be "my_user" when used in authorize, since it's already defined, but it's still "user", taken from the modules definition of USER_KEY. Anyone have any idea how to get authorize to use the classes version of USER_KEY?

• c++ Mixing printf, cout with wprintf, wcout

  I know you should not mix printing with printf,cout and wprintf,wcout, but have a hard time finding a good answer why and if it is possible to get round it. The problem is I use a external library that prints with printf and my own uses wcout. If I do a simple example it works fine, but from my full application it simply does not print the printf statements. If this is really a limitation, then there would be many libraries out there which can not work together with wide printing applications. Any insight on this is more than welcome.

• is vim able to detect in which language a file is written, and then load the correct dictionnary ?

  I am using several languages, and by now I am obliged to indicate vim with which of these the spell check must be done. Is there a way to set up vim so that he automatically detects the correct one ? I remember vaguely that in a previous version of vim, when the spell check was not integrated, this was possible, using the vimspell script. It would be even better if this could apply not only to a file but also to a portion of a file, since I frequently mix several languages in a single file. Of course, I would like to avoid to load several dictionaries simultaneously.
