• Identifying iPhone OS's on a Network and Sending Push Notifications

  tldr; Can you identify devices on your network as an iPhone OS device easily? Can you send push notifications to devices identified as using the iPhone OS on your network without a a target app? Is is possible to identify which devices on a network are using the iPhone OS? With this information, is it possible to send push notifications to these devices? From my understanding, your application server will contact APNs, which will contact the users. So, the above would be impossible. Can someone confirm this for me? Thanks, P.S.

  I need to use Subversion with Eclipse on Mac Lion. I encounter problem as below I saw: Subclipse in Mac OS Lion In my context: I use Mac OS Line 10.7.2 Eclipse version: 3.7.1 64 bit I install Subversion: Universal Subversion 1.6.17 Binaries for Lion (Mac OS X 10.7) in the page: http://www.open.collab.net/downloads/community/ I install Subclipse by the "Install New Software..." feature of Eclipse with the update link: http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.8.x It install Subclipse 1.8.2, JavaHL 1.7.1.1 and some other packages. When I go to menu Preferences/ Team / SVN , it produce error: "Incompatible JavaHL library loaded. 1.7.x or later required." I find to install SVN Kit, so use it instead of JavaHL as the very first link refer (here), but I don't see it in Subclipse package.

  I am a bit confusing in selecting the target version in Windows phone7 Application development. In my Windows phone7 app I need to use a light weight relational DB Which didn't introduce with version 7.0 but SQL CE with 7.1 version. The problem is if I select the target version as 7.1, then the devices which came up with windows phone7 OS 7.0 will not be able to install this. But I heard that all the devices that came with windows phone7 OS version 7.0 is upgradable for windows OS version 7.1 for free. If this is the case then if I select the development SDK version as 7.1, then will all the windows phone7 devices be able to install this? Like to know which will be the best Target version in this case to select, before I start developing. Any guidance/ Idea is highly appreciated. Thanks...

  Hi, Is there any alternative or work around so that I can use zoomScale in Iphone OS 2.0. It seems the property is only available in Iphone OS 3.0 or later? I have two subviews in my UIScrollView and if the first subview reach a specified scale then it will change to the other subview and save the current scale to zoomScale so that the new subview will apply to the previous scale. Like for example in, scrollViewDidEndZooming, scrollView.zoomScale = scale; When I run my app in Iphone OS 2.0, it gives me error saying invalid zoomScale invalid selector. How can I work around this? Thanks.

  Hello, I need to generate small images for certain parts of text. Those will have to fit into the text seamlessly. I know I can not make up for every browser font settings available, but how do I have to check for Linux, Mac and Windows users depending on the user agent? I want to use the right font (of the three "Verdana, Arial, Helvetiva") for the right user agent OS. So: How do I check for the OS? What do I have to compare to in the user agent? Where can I get the other two fonts. Does the Windows-included Verdana look the same as the one used on Linux (or, is it free anyway? I don't know much about fonts)? Where do I get Helvetica? Is it Mac OS licensed? Any code examples can be in either c# or VB.NET. I can read both. Thank you in advance.

  Not really a programming related question but... I'd like very much to experiment with WebGL on my spare time. My current 'spare time' machine is a MacBook running Mac OS X Tiger (10.4.xx) and I'm unable to find a new browser supporting this OS. Firefox dropped support, Chrome too, and Safari idem. I read somewhere that this is due to a Quicktime bug that Apple won't fix. Does anyone have more information on this issue ? Does anyone have a clue or track to find a running implementation of WebGL on Mac OS X 10.4 ? Cheers,

  I'm trying to copy all files and folders from one directory to another, but exclude certain files. Specifically, I want to exclude subversion files and folders. However, I'd like a general yet concise solution. I imagine I'll find the need to exclude several types of files in the near future. For example, I might want to exclude .svn, *.bak, and *.prj. Here is what I've put together so for, but it is not working for me. The first part, find works, but I'm doing something wrong with xargs and cp. I tried cp with and without the -R. • Can´t install OS from usb flash drive

  My previous problem was describe here: Can't boot OS from USB drive, showing black screen with blinking cursor and there are informations about my laptot. So please look there and then read rest here. I changed flash drive and it fix the problem but now when I boot to Ubuntu (or I tried Fedora, it do same) I can´t install system. I click on Install Ubuntu 10.10 I choose language, then on next window I click Forward but it just show waiting cursor and nothing happen (same Fedora). It doesn´t freeze so I can end install and I can take printscreen (when I was taking the screen, cursor was shown as waiting, not normal as in picture, it´s weird). Image where my installation ends I think there is some problem with Disk and Volumes and so. But I used chkdsk from W7 on boot and It said everything all right and I try utility in Ubuntu and check file system and it is all right too.Image with my Disk (Volumes and other things) I hope someone helps me. • Colour Issues in OS X Terminal ssh'd to Ubuntu terminal

  In the OS X Terminal.app, I'm having some colour issues. If I am working locally, there are no colours. If I ssh into my opensolaris machine (using screen inside ssh) there are no colours. If I then ssh into my ubuntu virtualmachine, and say, vim edit a file, the colours are completely broken. On quitting vim, it then keeps the broken colours and applies them to everything until I force a terminal bell. I assume this is a misconfiguration of the ubuntu machines colours, or a mismatching of terminal emulators. What is the best fix in this instance.

  Hi, How do I change the default screensaver in Mac OS X using shell. I am writing a script to customize computers that I need to distribute. In particular I would like them all to have the same default screensaver. How could I change this in a script? So far I have done the following: I have a com.apple.screensaver.default.plist file with the screensaver settings I want in it, and in the script I copy it to /Users/guest/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.${UUID}.plist where UUID is the relevant value. I have modified /System/Library/Frameworks/Screensaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/EngineDefaults.plist to have the screensaver I want as the default settings. But when I open Screensaver settings in System Preferences after running the script, the default screensaver is Flurry! What can I do to make this work? Thanks, ChilisWorld

• Linux equivalent to Mac OS X's fs_usage

  Is there a Linux equivalent to the Mac OS X command fs_usage? According to the man page it does the following: "report system calls and page faults related to filesystem activity in real-time". I suppose one option would be to use strace and filter the data, however the fs_usage command allows all the processes running on the system to be "traced" at the same time.   I would like to use rsync to backup my website to my local computer (OS X). I started of with this guide and got pretty far. I use the following rsync-line: rsync -PzrlptgD --del --delete-excluded -r --rsync-path=~/bin/rsync user@server:~/ /local/backup/folder/ I wanted to use the -a option (same as rlptgoD) but it crashes as soon as I use the -o flag. receiving file list ... rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (8 bytes received so far) [receiver] rsync error: unexplained error (code 255) at /SourceCache/rsync/rsync-42/rsync/io.c(452) [receiver=2.6.9] If I skip the --owner flag it copies the files but I'm not really sure what difference it makes (I've tried to read up on it but found nothing) Should I just skip using the --owner flag? Right now the following caught my interest: Debian: Well established with huge repository of 20000+ apps. gNewSence: "Totally free" version of Ubuntu, so it should be more beginner friendly? OpenSolaris: Also open-source, and built on "strong" Unix base. I do mainly basic tasks such as web browsing, office work, maintaining big photo collection, and a little bit of programming. Questions: How "free" are each of these distributions compared to each other, is this whole freedom thing a big deal? Will a binary labeled as for Ubuntu work on gNewSense? What are simple IDEs for Debian and gNewSense?

• dns service on OS X Snow Leopard Server

  Hello all, I have a Mac Mini (1.83GHz, 1.5 RAM) with a fresh install of OS X Snow Leopard Server and I want to use it for DNS and web hosting. What I have done so far is to go to the domain registrar and configure a new nameserver (ns.domain.tld) to point to my static IP. This Mac Mini is behind a DI-524 router and I have forwarded ports 53 and 80 to the Mini. I have also added the domain name to the DNS configuration pannel (as in the attachment), but intodns.com gives the following error (among others, and obviously the site is not working): "Mismatched NS records WARNING: One or more of your nameservers did not return any of your NS records."   I have a server running OS X Server 10.5 and it can't resolve localhost to 127.0.0.1. When I try ping this is what happens: ping localhost ping: cannot resolve localhost: Unknown host SSH and web browsers get similar results (uknown host). If I try using 127.0.0.1 or the ip address assigned on the LAN all of the above work. Here's the contents of my /etc/hosts file: cat /etc/hosts ## # Host Database # # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry. ## 127.0.0.1 localhost 255.255.255.255 broadcasthost ::1 localhost fe80::1%lo0 localhost I have no local DNS service running. Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening or how I can fix it?

  I have a Mac running Snow Leopard connected to an Active Directory domain. I can share folders on the Mac and view files from Windows without problems. When I try to enable my Mac account for write access through System Preferences, I'm prompted for my account's password. Even though I'm entering the right one, I get an "Incorrect Password" response. The same process works fine for the local Mac administrator account; it's the Active Directory account I'm having problems with. I followed the advice on this page on apple.com without success: (I used the Mac to reset my domain password, and re-created my login keychain) If you want to use a user account that existed before you installed Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), you may need to reset the password for the account using Accounts preferences. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong? Until I fix this I can't write to my Mac file share from Windows.

  Hello! I'm trying to use the lastest version of a certain development tool and it's sort of difficult to use on a 1200x800 display. Using VMWare Fusion, I can set the screen resolution inside a VM to 1900x1200 on my 13" MBP and it's still usable. Does anyone know of a way to force Mac OS X to scale it's resolution? I tried ScreenResX and it said the scaled resolution was "invalid" or something like that. I know that there are only a certain number of pixels on the screen. I'm only asking how to scale, not set a legit resolution. My current hack solution is to run Snow Leopard Server in a VM with resolution scaling.

• Aventail VPN connect on Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard

  Hello, I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Recently, my company switched (for whatever odd reason) from Cisco VPN (that used to work fine) to Aventail VPN. I proceeded to install the Aventail VPN client on both the mac and a Windows 7 machine, both on my home network. When I try to connect one or the other (I make sure one is disconnected before connecting through the other machine), I get a connection and view the correct certificate - accept it and Aventail tells me that I am connected. However, accessing any page inside my company's network is only possible on Windows. On the Mac I get the following page: http://grab.by/2WOA It looks like my ISP doesn't know how to redirect me? Maybe something about my DNS being set incorrectly on the Mac? Our helpdesk has been completely useless and I was hoping fellow super users can help. Thanks.

• Crontab script on Mac OS X Lion does not work anymore

  I have a problem with cron tasks. Previously this script worked fine on Mac OS X 10.6 server, but when I initialize it on Lion (client), this script stopped working. Basically, this .bat file calls a jar file (that invokes a loop of mysqldump commands) to backup several databases on several servers, and runs perfectly if launched by the shell. cd /Users/nameoftheuser/Desktop/backupper /usr/bin/java -cp .:Backupper.jar:lib/mail.jar backupper.Main "/Users/nameoftheuser/Desktop/backupper/listasiti.txt" "/Users/nameofthe/Desktop/backupper/config.properties But if the cron launches the same .bat file, the generated database backups are 0 bytes. The cron entry is: 0 0 sh /Users/path/to/file.bat I believe that the problem is that cron doesn't run as root. Or what else?

  I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.2 and have been handed a couple of old files that need to be extracted. Old backups or finances or bills I believe. They are RAR files, and password protected. Is there a way to extract the hash from these files so I can feed it into John The Ripper or Cain and Abel? Edit I have downloaded cRARk, but unfortunately nothing I have (SimplyRAR, RAR Expander, The Unarchiver) will extract it without a password. Can someone verify that I'm crazy and there is no password on the Mac version?

• Can't edit an account in MySQL Administrator on OS X

  I'm running MySQL 5.5.20 on OS X 10.6.8. Using MySQL Administrator 1.2.12 (the latest) I am unable to edit any accounts. After successfully connecting to the database in MySQL Administrator, I go the Account tab, expand a user, and it just says "Loading...". It will stay on "Loading..." indefinitely. The symptoms are almost identical to user's experience and this MySQL bug from 2006, which has since been closed (fixed?). If I create a user and grant permissions to a schema, I get the error "Could not save changes to the use", which came up in 2005 as a bug (now closed). How do I edit MySQL accounts using MySQL Administrator?

  My father-in-law recently picked up an iMac (with OS X 10.7 - Lion) and loves it. However, his eyesight isn't that great and would like to find a way to increase the font size of the system menu bar like he could on his old Windows system.   Hi, I need to merge several MP3 tracks into one, I use Mac OS X 10.5. I want to convert all my Harry Potter CDs to my iPod, but not every minute a new track (as it is on the CDs) but chapterwise.
