• Filtering attachment types in Google Apps (free Google Business)

  We have Google apps in our company for mail delivery, our business can't pay the business version yet, however, we need to control the attachment types that employees download. We recently switched from another hosting provider who recomended us to plug Google Apps for mail when we moved the domain, we had a firewall before which was able to prevent certain file types to be downloaded. I know the business version has section for filtering mail (postini services). Is there a hack around my problem? Anyone ever had this problem? Thank you! UPDATE: The main problem is gmail apps uses ssl connection, can this be changed ? how can i get the firewall to filter files only allowing *.doc, *.xls y *.pdf.

• Tracking costs within one AWS account

  I have what I'm sure is a very common problem. Our company has many projects and groups working for different clients. We do a lot of our development work in the cloud and deploy our solutions there. We have a VPC set up that isolates projects from each other in their own subnet and that VPC is getting a hardware VPN connection back to HQ. We need to keep track of the cost run up by every project. The way I currently implement this is by providing my own tools for starting and stopping instances which log which user (and thus which project) to bill the instance too. This works okay for BoxUsage costs but not for other costs. I could create a separate account for each project and use consolidated billing, this I think would allow me to pay once but track costs per "project", but I would then not be able to share common resources (like bring account B's running instances inside the same VPC). Does anyone have any suggestions? Cheers C

• SBS 2008 reinstall on new machine

  We purchased a single license on Windows Small Business Server 2008 for a medical office, and soon after a power fault caused the server to overload, destroying the power supply and motherboard. I reinstalled on a new server, and have the domain up and running again, but under system properties it tells me I still need to activate windows, and that the product key currently entered is invalid for activation. I've been trying to figure out how to get in touch with Microsoft to explain the situation and get a new activation key issued without having to pay for another license which we can't afford, but the online documentation hasn't been particularly clear on the subject. Does anyone know how to do that, or if I do need the activation key to continue using SBS 2008? (It currently tells me I have 56 days left to activate) Any tips would be appreciated. I'm not strictly a computer guy and I'm feeling a little lost.

• How can I send super large files directly to another computer in the Internet for free?

  I regulary need to transfer very large files (30 GB) to my friend - financial statistics. I don't have any problem with bandwidth: it is very broad here. I did some research in the area, so: 1. I would not use FTP, as it is very tricky to get it working behind a NAT. 2. I would not use Skype/MSN/ICQ, as it is not designed for file transfer and it underperforms on the huge files. 3. I would not use file-sharing services, as I need to pay for big files (30 GB is a problem here) and I don't like holding any piece of my data on the third-party server. So, I need some smart tool that will do what I need: sending files directly browser-to-browser and not browser-server-browser. Is it so complex? Is there some web application in the Internet that can do this?

• Should I go along with my choice of web hosting company or still search?

  Hi all, I have been searching for a good website hosting company that can offer me all the services that I need for hosting my PHP & MySQL based website. Now this is a community based website and users will be able to upload pictures, etc. The hosting company that I have in mind, currently lets me do everything... let me use mail(), supports CRON jobs, etc. Of course they are charging about $6/month. Now the only problem with this company is that they have a limit of 50,000 files that can exist within the hosting account at any time. This kind of contradicts their frontpage ad of "UNLIMITED SPACE" on their website. Apart from this, I know of no other reason why I should not go with this hosting company. But my issue is that 50,000 file limit is what I cannot live with, once the users increase in significant number and the files they upload, exceed 50,000 in number. Now since this is a dynamic website and also includes sensitive issues like payments, etc. I am not sure if I should go ahead with this company as I am just starting out and then later switch over to a better hosting company which does not limit me with 50,000 files. If I need to switch over once I host with this company, I will need to take backups of all the files located in my account (jpg, zip, etc.), then upload them to the new host. I am not aware of any tools that can help me in this process. Can you please mention if you know any? I can go ahead with the other companies right now, but their cost is double/triple of the current price and they all sport less features than my current choice. If I pay more, then they are ready to accommodate my higher demands. Unfortunately, the company that I am willing to go with now, does NOT have any other higher/better plans that I can switch to. So that's the really really bad part. So my question(s): Since I am starting out with my website and since the scope of users initially is going to be less/small, should I go ahead with the current choice and then once the demand increases, switch over to a better provider? If yes, how can I transfer my database, especially the jpg files, etc. to the new provider? I don't even know the tools required to backup and restore to another host. (I don't like this idea but still..) Should I go ahead and pay more right now and go with better providers (without knowing if the website is going to do really that well) just for saving myself the trouble of having to take a backup of the 50,000 files and upload to a new host from an old host and just start paying double/triple the price without even knowing if I would receive back the returns as I expected? Backup and Restore in such a bulky numbers is something that I have never done before and hence I am stuck here trying to decide what to do. The price per month is also a considerable factor in my decision. All these web hosting companies say one common thing: It is customers responsibility to backup and restore data and they are not liable for any loss. So no matter what hosting company that I would like to go with, they ask me to take backup via FTP so that I can restore them whenever I want (& it seems to be safer to have the files locally with me). Some are providing tools for backup and some are not and I am not sure how much their backup tools can be trusted considering the disclaimers they have. I have never backed-up and restored 50,000 files from one web host to another, so please, all you experienced people out there, leave your comments and let me know your suggestions so that I can decide. I have spent 2 days fighting with myself trying to decide what to do and finally concluded that this is a double-edged sword and I can't arrive at a satisfactory final decision without involving others suggestions. I believe that someone must be out there who may have had such troublesome decision to make. So all your suggestions to help me make my decision are appreciated. Thank you all.

• How to fix 0x800CCC0E Error Codes?

  I recently started receiving the above-mentioned error which is apparently a Winsock error message it is preventing me from checking my e-mail with Gmail, although there is no problem with my e-mail was ATT e-mail and MSN mail. I found a number of supposed fixit programs which found a great number of errors in my registry (although Wyse and Glary did not find anything wrong with my registry?) And offered to fix them for a fee. I would much rather not pay! :-) Does anybody here know what is causing this error and how to fix it? oh – I am using Windows 7/ultimate and Live Mail as my e-mail reader. Thank you. Ross

• Web & SQL Hosting 32 vs. 16 GB of ram

  I'm in the market for a new dedicated host for my website. My question is I can pay more to upgrade to 32GB of RAM, but it seems overkill for my website right now, in fact, 16GB seems a little overkill. However, I run a lot of pretty intense full text searches for my site. I'm wondering if SQL Server would benefit, or could it be configured to use the 32 GB of RAM if I purchase the additional to help speed things up? I am assuming that most of my latency is caused by disk I/O and that for the extra money spent on RAM, I might not see any improvement in overall speed?

• Is it possible to upgrade HTC HD2 to Windows Mobile 7? [closed]

  I have HD2 over one year and I have to say it was pretty wrong purchase. Both HTC HW and MS OS (Windows Mobile 6.5) are somehow crappy. I had several crashes wich resulted in hard reset (no flashing and almost no additionally installed applications) and phone was under repair two times (2x replaced motherboard and 1x replaced dislay). After these reapirs at least HW works pretty well but OS is still bad. I would like to upgrade the phone to Windows Mobile 7. I'm not looking for some flashing (I already saw some guides). I'm ready to pay for upgrade to have it legal. Is it possible? Buying new phone just to have SW upgrade is ridiculous. Btw. My primary phone is iPhone 4 and I think on iPhone 3GS it is possible to upgrade OS iOS 4 so I would like to see similar possibility with Windows Mobile.

• Forward request through IPTables

  I have a server running CentOS with 50 IP addresses on it. I was looking to use it as a proxy server (not just HTTP), but can't find any examples on how to set up the IP Tables. I want to proxy into IP-X and have my request look like its coming from IP-X. I currently do this on squid, but we need to proxy more than just HTTP traffic. Here is an example of the squid config: acl users src 255.255.255.255 #Locked down IP address acl all src 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 # http access rules http_access deny !users http_access allow users http_reply_access deny !users http_reply_access allow users icp_access deny all #ip_addresses acl ip3 myip 10.1.1.3 tcp_outgoing_address 10.1.1.3 ip3 Do to IP restrictions I need access to IMAP, POP and SMTP through a proxy. • Which universal or driverless printing solution do you use/recommend?

  I'm in need of a driverless printing solution for Microsoft Terminal Services 2003/2008. This is mainly to support clients who are connected through broadband into our hosted servers. We were hoping that MSTS 2008 thinprint would be the answer but unfortunately it performs poorly in the print area. The files are too large. I'd like a product that works/easy to install (as our clients are remote and not particularly tech savvy) and ideally I just pay for the server license and not every clients. • Recommendations for a cloud/hosted server environment that can run different Windows VMs?

  I currently have a colocated Win 2008 server that I use for hosting different windows VMs for testing: Win 2008, Win XP, Vista, Win7, Win 2000. I'd like to ditch the server and use something like Amazone AWS but the key thing is I need to be able to launch VMs for these different windows versions. AWS doesn't allow this currently. Can anyone recommend somewhere that I could use? The main reasons I want to get away from my own server are: administration: backup, windows updates, etc space: disk limitations mean I can't have all the VMs I want. I'd like to be able to pay for space incrementally. I'll typically only run 1-3 at a time but want lots of snapshots of different machines.

• How can I migrate mails from Yahoo! Mail to Google Apps?

  We'd like to move from using Yahoo! Mail to our Google Apps account. It'd be great to be able to migrate all the mails across from the old accounts to the new. If we were using Gmail accounts this would be easy as the migration is offered by Google, for some reason they don't offer this to those using custom domains. As far as I know Yahoo! don't offer POP or IMAP access to non-paying customers and I'd rather not pay $20 per account that I want to migrate. Anyone know of any easy and cheap solutions?

But sometimes we (as in experienced amateurs) run into problems that aren't so common, nobody has blogged about it and experts advice not readily available. • How can i use one Domain Controller to manage 3 separate small firms

  currently we have one Domain Controller that have 15 users and cup off services(hMailServer, IIS, DNS, Active Directory). Now the owners of the firm created two new firms which computers and networks are my responsibility. Now i wonder how exactly to join users in existing domain. Did you think that is a good idea to just include all computers and user from all firms under one domain or there is another solution ? • Laptop Toshiba Satelite M300 screen is completely blank.

  Hi, My laptop Toshiba satelite M300 Laptop screen is completely blacked out. It powers up and appears to be running but the screen is blank. I've taken battery pack off and back on again. Before the screen was blacked out, it used to flicker a bit. Also before it blacked out i was having problems with the internet and I was on phone to Internet provider who took me through steps to take my laptop back to a future date where it was operational. It then worked properly for a few days but then switched it on and screen was blank. It's more then a year old so out of warranty. Any suggestions on whether I should pay the $300 bucks to see if they can fix it?

  I have some racks that will be fed by 208V/20A circuits. These circuits will be conditioned and battery-backed by the facility in which these racks will live. 99% of the devices in the rack will be able to support 208V input, so I plan to use these PDUs. However, there may be one or two odd devices that will need 110V input. I know that I can use a step-down transformer to provide 110V for these devices, but that seems like overkill for such a small number of devices, plus I don't want to pay extra for the UPS functionality since my power will already be battery-backed. Any suggestions for something I can use for these one-off 110V devices?

  I have a SQL job whose step of 'PowerShell' type does 'exit 1' if encounters an error i.e. $ErrorActionPreference='stop'; trap{"$_"; exit 1} Problem is, SQL Server doesn't pay attention to that exit code, and reports "The step did not generate any output. • How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

  Hi there I'm a developer looking at introducing ClickOnce deployment for an internal .NET Winforms application that will be distributed via the corporate network. Now I would like to deploy this application under the full trust model however in order for that to happen I need to sign the software with a certificate. I can do that with a "test" certificate that has no information of the publisher etc, however that means an extra step will occur on the users workstation where they will have to confirm that the software is OK. So what I want to know is. is there a way I can get my IT Infrastructure guys to create me a an "internal" certificate from the domains Certificate Authority, or do I have to go and pay for a certificate from somebody like VeriSign?   let me try to explain it by listing some of the things I want to do: Submit random thoughts, notes, facts, and to-do tasks of any sort and at any time. Tag each of these submissions freely. Manage these tags centrally. Associate meta-data with submissions and tags. Search, filter, and sort submissions. I want lots of power here. Display views of submissions (including within searches) in a hierarchy. Create said hierarchies easily out by ordering relevant tags. I'm thinking towards some kind of desktop program that allows me to quickly do all of these things. A web service could also work, too, but it will need offline capabilities. I don't want to have to pay for this, if that's possible. Also, as I know regex and SQL, I wouldn't mind solutions involving the use of either.

• How can I prepare a cake graph in excel with a result based on 100%?

  Hello my friends... I need to distribute correctly a little data in an excel graph. I have the total I've earned last year which should represent the 100% of the cake. Then I have my insurance expenses and I want to understand, graphically, how much of my total income went away to pay insurance... I know that a basic proportion like: total expenses : total insurance costs = 100 : x do the correct math but I can't find a way to display this in a cake graph... Any hints?
