• C# Class Design Question

  This is a super newbie question, I've been programming for a while, but am just learning OOP. I have a class that works with user input via the C# console. There are different methods in this class to gather different input sets. I have another class that takes these input sets and puts them in a database. What is the best way to pass the input from my input class to my database insert class? My guess would be: Array1[] = inputClass.GetParameterSet1(); DatabaseInsertClass.InsertIntoDatabase1(Array1[]); Is there anything wrong with this or is there a better way to do this? Should I even have two classes (The database class could also take the user input)?

• JavaScript: window.opener.location.href question

  I need to make a little JS app to scroll automatically through a list of URLs. I've chosen to have the functionality in a pop-up, for various reasons. The syntax to change the opening window's URL is: window.opener.location.href = "http://www.example.com"; This works fine with one URL, but if two statements are called, only one is executed. I experimented with an alert statement between two of the above statements, and the alert event made the second statement function properly: window.opener.location.href = "http://www.example1.com"; alert("hello world"); window.opener.location.href = "http://www.example2.com"; Question is: does anyone know how to get the first and second window.opener statements to work, without the intervening alert();? Also, how can I add a pause between the two statements, so that the second executes a couple of seconds after the first? Thanks so much!

Example: if I type in browser: http://localhost:8081/Edit?action=renameModule&newName=Module2 This works correctly. • Selecting fields in SQL Select statements (Dumbest SQL Question)

  Hello all, Here's a dumb question which I can't find an answer to: I have a table which contains 20 fields, a few of which are date/time. I am interested in pulling all the fields. I would like to pull the datetime fields using the to_char function but don't want to individually list out all the other fields. Is there an easy way to do this? I tried select *, tochar(dtfield) as dt2 and select tochar(dtfield) as dt2, * and both give errors. Thanks for all your help! JC

For example, take a look at this code (gets in put from the user, checks it against the database to see if the username/password combination exist): $input['user'] = htmlentities($_POST['username'], ENT_QUOTES); $input['pass'] = htmlentities($_POST['password'], ENT_QUOTES); // query db if ($stmt = $mysqli->prepare("SELECT * FROM members WHERE username=? AND password = ?")) { $stmt->bind_param("ss", $input['user'], md5($input['pass'] . $config['salt'])); $stmt->execute(); $stmt->store_result(); // check if there is a match in the database for the user/password combination if ($stmt->num_rows > 0) {} } In this case, I am using htmlentities() on the form data, and using a MySQLi prepared statement. Do I still need to be using mysql_real_escape_string()?

  As one of the steps toward a greater website redesign I am putting the majority of the content of our website into html files to be used as includes. I am intending on passing a variable to the PHP template page through the URL to call the proper include. Our website has many programs that each need an index page as well as about 5 sub-pages. These program pages will need a menu system to navigate between the different pages.I am naming the pages pagex_1, pagex_2, pagex_3, etc. where "pagex" is descriptive of the page content. My question is, what would be the best way to handle this menu system? Is there a way to modify the initial variable used to arrive at the index page to create links in the menu to arrive at the other pages? Thanks for any help!

• Multipart question: Mapping between xml and Json using xpath

  This is a JSON mapping question from a json newbie. Currently i'm reading xml using xpath in C#, and the xpath are returning either the element or attribute node values, as is the schema's want. I want to write out some of the returned values into a json formatted file. I know i can faneigle the xpath expression to return the element or attribute names, so I can built the appropriate name/value json structure before serialization, but I was I'm wondering if their was some way of doing a mapping between the xml and json. The xml schema is fairly big, so potentially the mapping will be big, meaning a ton of cumbersom coding to make it work. Is their any way to automap somehow? I was planning to use json.net, which seems flexible enough, although their may be a better approach. Any help would be appreciated. Bob.

  hey guys, just having a bit of difficulty with a query, i'm trying to figure out how to show the most popular naturopath that has been visited in a centre. My tables look as follows; Patient(patientId, name, gender, DoB, address, state,postcode, homePhone, businessPhone, maritalStatus, occupation, duration,unit, race, registrationDate , GPNo, NaturopathNo) and Naturopath (NaturopathNo, name, contactNo, officeStartTime, officeEndTime, emailAddress) now to query this i've come up with SELECT count(*), naturopathno FROM dbf10.patient WHERE naturopathno != 'NULL' GROUP BY naturopathno; which results in; COUNT(*) NATUROPATH 2 NP5 1 NP6 3 NP2 1 NP1 2 NP3 1 NP7 2 NP8 My question is, how would I go about selecting the highest count from this list, and printing that value with the naturopaths name?   I have a web application written in asp.net mvc. I have in MyApp.Web assembly the list of views and and the content files(images, scripts, css, and so on). In MyApp.WebBase I have the rest of fonctionality(Controllers, domain(entities, repositories, services)). Now the question is the following: I want to give to third party html coder access only to MyApp.Web source code in order he to be able to compile the application locally and see the results. By other hand the developer team shoul have access to full source code. The problem is that in order the html coder to be able to compile the application locally he need in his project the references to the MyApp.WebBase.dll Can anyone help me? Thanks.

  Hello there. I have a question on the java applet.I've created a java applet,which is a board game,that can have a 2*2 array with row number and column number both set to 9 by default. Now I want to extend my applet a bit,that the user can specify the size they want on the command-line,then the applet class will create an applet with correspoding size. I try to add a constructor in the applet class,but the Eclipse complains,I also tried another class,which will create an instance of this applet with size as an instance variable,but it is not working. Could anyone help me a little bit on where to put a main() method that can take care of user-specified board sized,then create an array in my applet class accordingly? Thanks a lot. Rob

  Hi, I was trying to understand the difference between early and late binding, and in the process realized that the concept of binding is nebulous to me. I think I understand that it relates to the way data-as-a-word-of-memory is linked to type-as-a-set-of-language-features but I am not sure those are the right concepts. Also, how does understanding this deeply help people become better programmers? Please note: This question is not "what is late v. early binding" or "what are the trade-offs between the 2".   Hello, If a local object is returned in a function call, it has to do at least three steps: 1. Copy constructor is called to hold a copy. 2. Destroy local object. 3. A copy is return. For example: x = y + z If x is an integer object. A copy of y + z should be returned, then a new object is created, then assignment operator of x will take this object as parameter. So my question is: Is the same process used for built-in type such as int, double...? If they're not the same, how's it done? Thanks, Chan

  Hello, I have written a program for a stack. For this i needed a StringBuilder to be able to show me what was in the stack else i would get the class name instead of the actual values inside. My question is there any other way except for a StringBuilder for such kind of problem? Also in what other kind of cases does this kind of problem happen?   Is it important for a VB6 app to refer to certain OCX versions? I have noticed that if I put my VB6 app code through the IDE on one machine then the form files will refer to different version of some OCXs than if I use another machine. What is the rule of thumb with this? Is it safe to assume that most of these old OCX versions will be compatible with each other and so I shouldn't worry? Some of the OCXs in question are: RICHTX32.OCX v1.1 and v1.2 COMCTL32.OCX v1.2 and v1.3

  I have two panels main_panel and child_panel. I have set layout for main_panel by using "main_panel.setLayout(flowlayout)" and added child_panel in main_panel by using "main_panel.add(child_panel)". This child_panel gets added to main_panel but its position is at the cross-section of horizontal midpoint and top vertical section of screen. But I want child_panel to be at the top left corner, something I could have done by using "child_panel.setlocation(a,b)" method, if I have set the Layout of main_panel as NULL. I have used flowlayout here because I want components in the JPanel to keep adjusting with the size of JFrame. So question is, can I add child_panel to main_panel at the exact location I want, even if I set the Layout of main_panel as not NULL.

  I have a general question about inheritance in the .NET framework, lets say you have 2 classes, the first is called Parent and the second is called Child. Child inherits from Parent. Parent wants to ensure that each instance of child executes a specific piece of code when it loads irrespective of whether the child has their own onLoad code explicitly specified. From my experience, if i handle onLoad in the parent and not in the child, the parents onLoad code will fire but if its handled in both classes only the child's code will fire. Is this correct? and if so how can i ensure the parents code will always fire for the child...

• question about select() and range of for loop to read sockets

  Just a quick question about using select(). I'm using select() to read from multiple sockets. When I looked up examples on how to use select(), a lot of tutorials showed going through for loops and checking for FD_ISSET. The problem I have with those tutorials is that the for loop starts from i = 0. and checks if the bit has been set for the file descriptor i using FD_ISSET. Couldn't the for loop start from say your minfd (just like how you would keep track of maxfd)?? Or am I missing something?? Following link is an example of such for loop (look at the fourth example that he gives) http://www.developerweb.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2933 If that was the only example out there that used such for loop, I might understand it was a mistake or bad coding but I've seen several examples of such for loop of uselessly going through literally thousands of sockets and I'm convinced I'm missing something. But if it was a method, why would it begin with a capital letter and has no return data type?   I just have a quick question about the conditional operator. Still a budding programmer here. I am given x = 1, y = 2, and z = 3. I want to know, why after this statement: y += x-- ? z++ : --z; That y is 5. The values after the statement are x = 0, y = 5, and z = 4. I know the way the conditional operator works is that it is formatted like this: variable = condition ? value if true : value if false. For the condition, y += x-- , how does y become 5? I can only see 2 (2 += 0) and 3 (2 += 1)(then x-- becomes zero) as possibilities. Any help is much appreciated. :)

  I am playing around with the kernel and am looking at the kmem_cache files_cachep belonging to fork.c. It detects the sizeof(files_struct). My question is this: I have altered files_struct and added a rb_root (red/black tree root) using the built-in functionality in linux/rbtree.h. I can properly insert values into this tree. However, at some point, a segfault occurs and GDB backtraces the following information: (gdb) backtrace 0 0x08066ad7 in page_ok (page=) at arch/um/os-Linux/sys-i386/task_size.c:31 1 0x08066bdf in os_get_top_address () at arch/um/os-Linux/sys-i386/task_size.c:100 2 0x0804a216 in linux_main (argc=1, argv=0xbfb05f14) at arch/um/kernel/um_arch.c:277 3 0x0804acdc in main (argc=1, argv=0xbfb05f14, envp=0xbfb05f1c) at arch/um/os-Linux/main.c:150 I have spent many hours trying to figure out why there is a segfault given that the red/black tree inserts properly. I'm thinking it's a memory allocation issue with new processes made by fork() of a parent process. Could this be the case and could it have something to do with kmem_cache files_cachep?
