  • IIS Web Farm Framework servers are automatically set to "unavailable" even when they are healthy... And they never return to the available state!

    I have 2 web farm configurations, one with 2 member servers and one with 3 member servers. I have health monitoring set up on both farms and the monitoring tool reports all servers as being healthy. However after a while all the servers are marked as being "Unavailable" and "Healthy" in the "Monitoring and Management" screen (in the "Servers" screen they are all listed with "Yes" in the "Ready for Load Balancing" column). Viewing the event log on both the web farm controller or any of farm servers doesn't reveal anything interesting. there are no warnings or errors in the period where the servers became unavailable. There are a couple of informational events about the worker process getting shut down due to inactivity but I don't hope this is the cause since that would mean that the farms will die during the night when the load is low. Am I missing something? EDIT: Btw, I think its very odd that the application pool shuts down on the servers since the health monitoring system is polling an aspx page on each server. Shouldn't that keep them going? EDIT2: Now I've also experienced this problem with the RTW version of Web Farm Framework 2.

    Hi guys, I've got a Windows 2003 x86 server with a small WSS3.0 installation. Now we've bought a new server with Windows Server 2008 x64 and installed SharePoint Foundation 2010 on it. I wish to transfer the few lists and their view from the old WSS3 to SP2010. How should I do this? All the migration websites I've read talk about preparing, but no-one really say how to migrate from one x86 2007 server to a x64 2010 server. Cheers Nik

  • Sharepoint "List does not exist" after site import

    I'm try to copy a site from a production WSS 3.0 server to a testing server in a different farm to try some changes. The export using stsadm works as expected, I create the target site in the test farm and the import finished without error. The site in question makes use of some of the 'Sharepoint Boost' products and those are installed and activated on the destination server. When I try to access the site, I receive the error- "List does not exist The page you selected contains a list that does not exist. It may have been deleted by another user." Any specific guidance might be helpful, but this is the most useless message I've seen. What's the process for troubleshooting this - Is there a more verbose log that contains more information somewhere?

  • HOWTO: Migrate SharePoint site from one farm to another?

    Hi Everyone, I've a site deployed on a developed machine. The site was developed under WSS 3.0 which contains custom List, Features, Templates, Styles etc. What I've to do is to create a deployment package (setup) which I can give away to my client. I know about stsadm but I don't have the access of the production machine. Is there a way I can package all the dependencies in a single file (installation file) and run on the server which will include all the dependencies (including site content)? I've tried to experiment this with SharePoint Content Deployment Wizard. I actually couldn't find a good reference on how to use it. But, this software doesn't something I'm looking for which can create a simple deployment package (after that you don't need to do anything). I might not be correct but after two days of googling I think there is no such utility (freeware) that can create a simple package of a site and install on other farm without even need to configure anything before you run the installation package. You people might have an advise which can help me to look/think outside the box and get to the solution quickly instead adding more days working on the problem. Please, share only freewares.     I'm planning to set up transactional replication for a 100Gb SQL Server 2008 database. I have the distributor and publisher on the same server, and am using push subscription. Should there be a performance impact on my publisher server when it creates the initial snapshot, and synchronises it with a subscriber? From what I've tried so far on a staging server, it seems to slow right down. Is there a better way to create the initial snapshot without impacting my production publisher server?

  • MySQL Windows vs. Linux: performance, caveats, pros and cons?

    Looking for (preferrably) some hard data or at least some experienced anecdotal responses with regards to hosting a MySQL database (roughly 5k transactions a day, 60-70% more reads than writes, < 100k of data per transaction i.e. no large binary objects like images, etc.) on Windows 2003/2008 vs. a Debian-based derivative (Ubuntu/Debian, etc.). This server will function only as a database server with a separate Web server on another physical box; this server will require remote access for management (SSH for Linux, RDP for Windows). I suspect that the Linux kernel/OS will compete less than the Windows Server for resources, but for this I can't be certain. There's also security footprint: even with Windows 2008, I'm thinking that the Linux box can be locked down more easily than the Windows Server. Anyone have any experience with both configurations?

    Server A (SQL2005) is in our primary domain, but server B (SQL2000) is just in a windows workgroup. We are not allowed to join it to the domain, or bad things happen... We also can't enable SQL authentication on server B. We've got domain accounts for A, and matching local accounts on server B. I can connect to B from my local PC or A using SSMS and a domain login, but I can't get the linked server to connect. Any ideas how to do this?

Is it possible to isolate a mailserver (for example HMailServer) by using VMware Server on Windows 2003 in order to avoid potential viruses moving from the guest into the host system?   • Web Farm Application deployment best practices

    Hi All, We are having a web farm which hosts multiple ASP.Net applications. We typically have 4 servers on the farm. The dilemma which i am having is in terms of capacity issue of the farm. Lets say i have currently got 200 apps in total. Should I deploy all 200 apps on all 4 servers (i.e. all the servers in the farm are identical) or should i split the applications between 2 sets of server and create 2 smaller farms so that i can then manage the application based on its criticality and usage etc. Any best practices in this area would be highly appreciated.     SQL Server can be connected from local system but can not be connected from remote system in the network. The error code is 40 from Visual Studio and 1326 when I try to connect to SQL Server from Management Studio. Firewall isn't the problem TCP/IP connection is enabled from SQL Server There are 2 pc terminals that can connect to the SQL Server but the 3th one cannot and using the same connection strings so the connection string is right It is SQL server 2000 any help will be appreciated thanks

    Hi there I'm looking for the benefits of upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to 2008. I was wondering: What database features can we leverage with 2008 that we can't now? What new TSQL features can we look forward to using? What performance benefits can we expect to see? What else will make management go for it? And the converse: What problems can we expect to encounter? What other problems have people found when migrating? Why fix something that isn't (technically) broken? We work in a Java shop, so any .NET / CLR stuff won't rock our world. We also use Eclipse as our main development so any integration with Visual Studio won't be a plus. We do use SQL Server Management Studio however. Some background: Our main database machine is a 32bit Dell Intel Xeon MP CPU 2.0GHz, 40MB of RAM with Physical Address Extension running Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. We will not be changing our hardware. Our databases in total are under a TB with some having more than 200 tables. But they are busy and during busy times we see 60-80% CPU utilisation. Apart form the fact that SQL Server 2000 is coming close to end of life, why should we upgrade? Any and all contributions are appreciated!

  • Problem exporting SQL Server management Studio Express to Go Daddy

    I'm having a terrible time exporting SQL Server Management Studio Express tables to the Go Daddy webserver. Go Daddy support can't help either. I started by using Microsoft Database Publishing Wizard for SQL Server thinking it would be 'easy'....not! I ran into user/password errors even though I was using the user and password that was created for the SQL database in the Go Daddy site. I called help desk support at Go Daddy and went through several iterations of processes to get the thing working but it didn't. Finally, the support guy acted like his phone went on the blip and scuttled away. There has got to be someway to upload SQL Server to a webserver without a lot of drama. Any suggestions?

  • Cannot access Network Shares on Windows Server 2008 running VisualSVN Server

    Hi, I have installed VisualSVN server on Windows Server 2008. The server is part of a domain but not the domain controller, it is just a data server and now an SVN server. VisualSVN uses port 80 and can only be access from inside the network (i do i by going to the dns name of the server). However, ever since i have installed this, other computers on the network can no longer access the shared folders on the server EXCEPT the domain controller which has no problems accessing the shares. I am stumped, i am guessing it is something to do with Apache running and not using host-headers (or whatever the Apache equivalent may be) but just being bound to the servers DNS name or IP. Any suggestions?

  • MS SQL Server Firewall Ports

    Hi, I've recently found myself in the position of quickly deploying a production app on SQL Server 2008 (EXPRESS), and I've been having some issues with configuring firewall rules between our web server running the ASP.NET app and our database server. Everything that I can find on the internet claims that I should only need to have TCP ports 1433/1434 and UDP port 1434 accessible on the database server. However, we were unable to get connectivity going between the web app and the database with just those ports. With the help of one of the guys in our datacentre, we discovered that there was traffic also going to TCP port 2242 on the database server. After opening this port, everything worked, but we're not sure why. Later on, I had to reinstall SQL Server due to some disk space issues, and found that the problem had resurfaced - after another session with the packet sniffer, we discovered that this time traffic was going to TCP port 4541 on the database server. My question is, is there some configuration option that I'm missing in SQL server that's making it choose random ports? I'd like to have our firewall rules locked down as much as possible, and of course we'd like to avoid any future mysterious connectivity issues, especially once the app is live. Both servers are running Windows 2003 R2 X64.

  • Can I setup a test server and then transfer everything to a diff. production server?

    Hello, I am going to be setting up a "real" server, but it's not being shipped for another week. I was planning on setting up most of the server's functionality using an extra workstation I have. I wanted to set-up Windows Server 2003 or 2008, IIS, Terminal Services, Firewall, and Antivirus on this regular machine. I'd also be installing software like Winzip and VMWare that'll be used on the server. I can't ghost the machine, as far as I've done in the past, because the motherboard/cpu/etc. will all be different. Is there any way to export all of the "server settings" or something like that so I can move everything from test to production? Is there any software out there that does something similar to this? Some things I'm going to have to wait on such as setting up the file server completely in its raid configuration, but I'd like to get the simple server stuff and network setup out of the way. Has anyone done this before? Do I need software, open-source or not, to do this? Or maybe there's a way to export all the server settings in some way? Thanks in advance! Justin

  • RPC Server Unavailable When Trying to Join W2003 Server to W2003 Active Directory Domain

    I have an Active Directory Domain with a Windows 2003 Standard SP2 Server as the DC. When trying to join an additional Windows 2003 Standard SP2 server to the domain I get message "The following error occurred attempting to join the domain 'My Domain'. The RPC Server is unavailable. The computer is actually added to the Active Directory Computers. I can even right-click and Manage it. I can access file shares from the DC on the other server and vice versa. I can ping the DC from this server and ping the server from the DC using the computer name. The time on both server is the same more or less to the second. RPC service is running on both servers. I can join other computers to the domain and there are no other issues with the domain. Windows Firewall disabled on both computers. NetSetup.LOG shows: NetpSetNetloginDomainCache: DSEnumerateDomainTrustsW failed 0x6ba I looked up this WIN32 Error Code: It is RPC_S_SERVER_UNAVAILABLE.
