  • Does Google sometimes ignore "special" characters, possibly depending on your location or font type settings? [closed]

    TLDR Google tends to ignore special characters in my search strings. Is there anything that I can do about it and is it, possibly, happening because Google makes certain assumptions based off of my default text-encoding settings and my location? I just posted this question over at StackOverflow. I had found a C preprocessor that I'd never seen before. As I should have done, I Googled it and tried to find out further information. I attempted various search terms which were all variations of "C Operator ##" (some times with and some times without the double-quotes.) Google didn't bring back anything of use so I posted my question on SO. As you can see from the comments, someone mentioned a search string (ironically one which I did try to search) and stated that I could have even hit the "I'm feeling lucky" button and have gotten my answer. The problem is I did search that, and the results that I received were far more basic and even after following the top results and searching the resulting pages, I could find nothing referencing the string "##". I'm not posting this question to complain but it does provide an empirical example of something I've seen before that really bugs me-- Google often ignores special characters in my search strings and the results are often useless. As a developer I often need to search for string values containing non-alphanumeric characters. Some characters (like the underscore or hyphen) can be used without trouble. However, other characters (such as the ampersand, carat, tilde and pound sign) are often ignored in my query strings. Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that I can get meaningful results from Google? NOTE I stay logged into Google and I live in the US. I wonder if Google detects some form of text-encoding setting or derives my results based off of certain, localized text-based assumptions. Regardless, I would like to for Google to search for what I give it. Is there anything that I can do to improve my results?

  • Is it possible to use different zsh menu selection behaviour for different commands?

    I'm using the menu select behaviour in zsh, which invokes a menu below the cursor where you can see the various possibilities. The .zshrc option i have set for this is zstyle ':completion:*' menu select=2 By default, pressing Return to select a possibility in this menu only completes the word — it does not actually send the command. For example, I might get a menu like this ~ % cd de<TAB> completing directory: [Desktop/] Development/ Pressing Return here will result in ~ % cd Desktop/ I then have to press Return a second time to actually send the command. I can modify this behaviour to make it so that pressing Return both selects the completion and sends the command by doing this bindkey -M menuselect '^M' .accept-line However, there's a problem with this: sometimes I need to complete a file or directory without sending the command. For example, I might need to do ln -s Desktop Desktop2 — with this bindkey behaviour, trying to complete Desktop will result in ln -s Desktop/ being sent as the command, and obviously I don't want that. I'm aware that just pressing space will let me get on with the command, but it's now a habit. Given this, is there a way to make it so that only some commands let you press Return once (like cd), but all other commands require pressing it twice?

  • Is code maintenance typically a special project, or is it considered part of daily work?

    Earlier, I asked to find out which tools are commonly used to monitor methods and code bases, to find out whether the methods have been getting too long. Most of the responses there suggested that, beyond maintenance on the method currently being edited, programmers don't, in general, keep an eye on the rest of the code base. So I thought I'd ask the question in general: Is code maintenance, in general, considered part of your daily work? Do you find that you're spending at least some of your time cleaning up, refactoring, rewriting code in the code base, to improve it, as part of your other assigned work? Is it expected of you/do you expect it of your teammates? Or is it more common to find that cleanup, refactoring, and general maintenance on the codebase as a whole, occurs in bursts (for example, mostly as part of code reviews, or as part of refactoring/cleaning up projects)?

  • Suspending my laptop breaks ethernet over firewire, are there commands which can fix it?

    As mentioned in this question I am using a firewire cable to provide a private network between my laptop and my desktop, because it makes using the screen sharing program synergy much nicer than using WIFI. However when I leave my office for the day and I suspend my laptop, when I return the next day, the desktop and the laptop cannot communicate over firewire anymore. The firewire0 device still has an IP address. but when I try and ping the desktop I get no route to host I'm using kernel 2.6.35-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 on Ubuntu 10.10. Is there some way I can remedy this without a reboot? Like, removing some kernel modules and re-inserting them?     I am trying to build a remote control application to control media on my Ubuntu. Does anyone know a way in order to accomplish this. The media keys in particular. Thank you. EDIT 1: I have tried using XTE, but is seems python in truncating the input or there is a limit or something which means that you can't do Ctrl + Key key presses, which wont suit my needs. I also tried uinput, but alas you need to run it as root, which also will not quite my needs. Now I am looking at EVDEV which seems promicing, that is if I can get it working.

  • Why do I have man pages of commands that don't exist?

    What is panel-test-applets for?? I don't know. But if I want to know I type: $ whatis panel-test-applets The answer is: panel-test-applets (1) - display installed applets I have the man page too, and I can read it: $ man panel-test-applets But there is no program with that name. Maybe the command is not very useful, but is its man page more useful? Does someone know how to install that program or what is its man page for when you cannot execute the program? I can't even execute the command: $ panel-test-applets nor $ panel-test-applets --help which is the only thing its man page talks about!!

  • How do I install Ubuntu 12.04 PPC on a PowerPC G4 from commands line or fix the graphical mode?

    Good afternoon. I'm new to this Linux world so I hope someone can help me . I recently got a Mac as a gift, a PowerPC G4 , which has 1GB of RAM but came with no optical drive or hard drive. So I put a dvd burner and a hard drive of 40 GB I got. Then download an iso of Ubuntu 12.04 for PowerPC and burned onto a CD. I'm trying to install from Open Firmware ( as I haven't a Mac keyboard, I use one standard ) . Finally, the Installation CD boots , but on live mode and after the Ubuntu 12.04 screen I get a message that there is a problem with my graphics adapter but I can continue with minimal graphics and give me the command line . My question is that how do I install through a text or if there is any way to fix this problem to run the graphical mode and so can continue the installation of Ubuntu, and if once installed Ubuntu the problem will be fixed or what? I would appreciate if you help me , as I mentioned before, there is almost nothing of Ubuntu but I think it will be easier than trying to get the Mac OS X proper . Spend good.

After this I even got a kernel update(from 3.13.0-27 to 3.13.0-29 via the Software Updater), but even now the issue persists. How do I solve this issue?

    I have a directory full of images, some of which are portrait-sized instead of landscape-sized, and I want to open the portrait-sized ones with an image editor. I can run the imagemagick command identify and I get an output like something.jpg JPEG 1920x1255 1920x1255+0+0 8-bit DirectClass 159KB 0.000u 0:00.000. How can I have a script interpret this output, i.e. decide which is bigger, the 1920 or the 1255, and then run a command on it if it is?

  • Is there a cross-platform special directory I can use for game save files?

    I'm developing with LWJGL and Java on a Windows 7 laptop. I've successfully set up saving to the %appdata%\gamename\saves\ or long form c:\users\user\appdata\roaming\gamename\saves\ folder by using File dir = new File(System.getenv("APPDATA") + "\\gamename\\saves\\");. I have hobbyist level experience with Linux, and zero experience with OSX. My game will be fully cross platform. Is System.getenv("APPDATA"); cross platform? If so, where does it point to on Linux or OSX? Is there a best practices alternative that I should use?

  • Should I be learning Linq, Direct SQL Commands (in .net), EF or other?

    Basically, I have a very good knowledge of plain old SQL coming from Classic ASP programming. Over the past couple of months, I have been learning C# and today was my first full day at MVC 3 (Razor) which I am loving! I need to get back in to Databases and I know that writing SqlCommand everywhere is obviously outdated (although it is nice I can still do it!). I used to go to a great usergroup as an IT Pro and the developer stuff went completely over my head, however I do remember a few things which kept coming up such as LINQ... However, that was some time ago and now the same people on Twitter are saying how out dated it is. I have tried to do research on both and I am clueless as to what direction I should go in, or when to use one over another (if learning both is a good thing). I am more so confused as I thought EF was a part of the .Net Framework, however, reading through the quick start guide, I had to download a component using Nuget. ... Basically I am out of my depth here and just need some honest advice of where to go!

  • Restore the Ctrl + Alt + Num Pad windows positioning commands?

    Using Unity in Ubuntu 12.04, the Ctrl + Alt + Num Pad combination for positioning windows has been fragmented by Ctrl + Alt + 4 (move window to left half of screen) being changed to Super + Left Arrow. A similar change moved Ctrl + Alt + 6 to Super + Right Arrow. Thus one moves windows to corners using Ctrl + Alt combos, but Super combos are needed to move to the left or right. This is more than a convenience problem since the new windows positioning provided by the super key combos seems to give different sizes than the Ctrl + Alt combos they replaced, leading to distracting gaps between windows when you combine the two methods to position three or more windows on one screen. Is there a way to restore the previous behavior so that I can use Ctrl + Alt + Num Pad for all windows positioning?

    i use AuroraMint as my themes. but some colors mess up my opera. when i use "gnome-appearance-properties-customize theme-Colors", i only can found input boxes' text color here. but i still want change background colors in email list (opera use GTK theme here). Gui give only 4 group colors here, so poor.     I am creating a "hand made" HTTP 1/0, 1/1 server. I recently integrated zip lib so now I can stream encoded gziped data in and out. I wonder Which major browsers (alive ones - IE6-IE10, Chrome, FF, etc) send Accept-Encoding: deflate, gzip, ... and so can handle Content-Encoding: gzip today? Which of them send any quality expectations? Which of them can send encoded gziped post request and multypart/form data to my server?

  • ADO.NET zombie transaction bug? How to ensure that commands will not be executed on implicit transac

    e.g. When deadlock occurs, following SQL commands are successfully executed, even if they have assigned SQL transaction that is after rollback. It seems, it is caused by a new implicit transaction that is created on SQL Server. Someone could expect that ADO.NET would throw an exception that the commands are being executed on a zombie transaction. However, such exception is not thrown. (I think this is a bug in ASP.NET.) Moreover, because of zombie transaction the final Dispose() silently ignores the rollback. Any ideas, how can I ensure that nobody can execute commands on implicit transaction? Or, how to check that transaction is zombie? I found that Commit() and Rollback() check for zombie transaction, however I can call them for a test:) I also found that also reading IsolationLevel will do the check, but I am not sure whether simple calling transaction.IsolationLevel.ToString(); will not be removed by a future optimizer. Or do you know any other safe way invoke a getter (without using reflection or IL emitting)?

    I have a little problem. I'm using Codeigniter with SSH library written by Shuky (https://bitbucket.org/quicktips/codeigniter-ssh2-library/src/a444968345ba/SSH.php -- You can see the code by following this link). Everything related with SSH works fine with other devices, but when I try to use this library and execute commands on Cisco devices, nothing happens (commands are not executed). I know that the connection is successful, but I can't execute any commands.     I'd like to assign a macro in Outlook 2007 to a Toolbar button that would execute the equivalent of these clicks when there is formatted text in the Windows clipboard: Click the Paste icon by the bottom arrow Click the Paste Special link. Click the Unformatted Text link. I have similar macros in Excel 2007 and Word 2007 but haven't been able to get one to work in Outlook 2007 / VBA. What would the VBA code for such a macro be?
