• EAV - is it really bad in all scenarios?

  I'm thinking to use EAV for some of the stuff in one of the projects, but all questions about it in stackoverflow end up to answers calling EAV an anti pattern. But I'm wondering, if is it that wrong in all cases? Let's say shop product entity, it has common features, like name, description, image, price, etc., that take part in logic many places and has (semi)unique features, like watch and beach ball would be described by completely different aspects. So I think EAV would fit for storing those (semi)unique features? All this is assuming, that for showing product list, it is enough info in product table (that means no EAV is involved) and just when showing one product/comparing up to 5 products/etc. data saved using EAV is used. I've seen such approach in Magento commerce and it is quite popular, so may be there are cases, when EAV is reasonable?

• Master Typing Productivity when Programming/SysAdmin [closed]

  I try to learn how to type fast and have managed to learn a lot. I am quite good at typing english text now. I do a lot of programmation though and if QWERTY seems fitted for english text, it doesn't seem fitted to type Ruby, Python, Javascript, Command Line or C++... I have read plenty of articles and if I respect their guidelines/tips, I am using a lot my right pinky specially to type []{}|\;:'"/?=+ enter delete. As you can see this symbols are the ones which are the most used when you are programming and we are using only one weak finger to reach them. Am I learning wrong? Is there is a way to be more productive? (I don't really want to switch to DVORAK) Have you some experiences/tips to share regarding this issue? • Python GUI and MVC - get variable from other module

  I am trying to split my code in different layers: GUI, reading the GUI, creating input, calculating the model, interpreting data, creating view, sending the view to the GUI. I got the idea of the MVC and would like to try to build my program that way. But I'm a little confused about how to exchange information between those modules. I'm running into problems with undefined global names and so forth. • Abandoment to blame for the last JavaScript file not always being loaded?

  I have a code snippet for an app that users are loading as a 3rd party script on their site. The general sequence is as follows: Site loads http://www.example.com/foo.js foo.js does stuff 1 to 2 seconds later, foo.js loads bar.js Now in a perfect world, I'd want to see matching counts for the calls to foo.js and bar.js. However, bar.js loads only about 94% of the time. I'm wondering how much of this discrepancy might be attributable to site abandonment given the fact that bar.js is delayed by 1 or 2 seconds. I posted here instead of StackOverflow since I think it's more a question about what would be typical time on page when users abandon the page.

• Where to put git "remote" repo on purely local git setup?

  I overwrote and lost some important scripts and would like to setup version control to protect my stuff. I've used git before, and am familiar with commands, but don't understand where I would put my "remote" repository on an install set up on my own machine---the place I push/pull to. I don't intend to share or access remotely, I just want a little source control for my files. I followed the instructions here for setting up my staging area: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4249974/personal-git-repository But where do I put git "remote" repo on purely local git setup? How does the workflow work then? On the command in the above: git remote add origin ssh://myserver.com:/var/repos/my_repo.git Where should I put/name something like this? • I'm seeing a lot of a new format for title elements for major sites: a few tags, and only then the title of the site itself, is this now optimal SEO?

  I'm seeing a lot of sites go to a format similar to the one now in use by stackexchange sites (i.e. short topic - maybe a long topic - only finally the site's name). Is this optimal SEO? It seems kind weird both because I'm only begun to notice changes in this direction recently, and because it seems like it would make it harder to tell in search results which actual site you're visiting, even if the topic is one that matches. Still, sites like Facebook, StackOverflow, etc probably aren't wrong, so I'm wondering if I should try to make my sites use that format, going forwards...

• What most games would benefit from having

  I think I've seen "questions" like this on stackoverflow but sorry if I'm overstepping any bounds. Inspired by my recent question and all the nice answers (Checklist for finished game?) I think every gamedev out there has something he/she thinks that almost every game should have. That knowledge is welcome here! So this is probably going to be an inspirational subjective list of some sorts and the point is that anyone reading this question will see a point or two that they've overlooked in their own development and might benefit from adding. I think a good example might be: "some sort of manual or help section. Of course it should be proportional to how advanced the game is. Some users won't need it and won't go looking for it but the other ones that do will become very frustrated if they can't remember how to do something specific that should be in the manual". A bad example might be "good gameplay". Of course every game benefits from this but the answer is not very helpful.

I posted a section on the docs to reach people that wants to help translating but I only got one contributor that attached a German translation. So far I got 4 languages, English, Spanish, French and German. So my question is, how do you guys translate your projects? Where do you find people interested in contributing? Does anybody use Google translate to do the job?

  I frequently have multiple Eclipse-based projects running simultaneously, sometimes on different versions of Eclipse. I have made a mess of a few workspaces by accidentally opening them in the wrong version of Eclipse. To thwart my own forgetfulness, I went seeking a way to launch directly to a workspace and found it at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/209789/starting-eclipse-w-specific-workspace. Essentially, add the -data switch to your icon's open command, such as: C:\eclipse\eclipse.exe -data E:\MyData\Clients\Confidential\EclipseGCDPGive it a unique name and stick it on your Start Menu (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu). Makes my life a bit easier and hopefully yours, too.

• Why does Ubuntu's webkit inspector look just like Safari?

  In older Ubuntu, the python-webkit inspector looked like Chrome, as you can see in these screenshots: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/13132459 (It had some annoying bugs, too.) I see Midori's inspector also looks just like Safari, and still has some bugs. In the latest 14.04's python-webkit embedded browser, the inspector actually looks just like Safari - and also seems to still have bugs (icons missing, problems selecting). Is there a reason for this drastic change, or is it just a default configuration? Is there a recommended way to get the webkit-inspector fully working?

Now I'm getting people who haven't made any attempt to learn the code, email me their code, and expect me to trace it through for them. I'm sure anyone with a half-popular blog gets similar requests. What's the best way to deal with this scenario? I want to put together a boilerplate response including these points: How far have you gone with this on your own? (is it any benefit for anyone if I say they are being imposing) I'm happy to help with any problems you find in my code Point them to other forms of help such as stackoverflow, diagnostic tools relevant to the topic.

• Which Git-based MIS to track workflow like Trac/Redmine but on console minimastically?

  Definitions MIS = management information system Some list about console based solutions here and some GUI-hacks here. Been fed up to install all those dependencies and no make -files with GUI -things so which console-based MIS would you suggest for a game-development team with graphical -repo, animation -repo, code -repo, stories -repo, etc ? P.s. I do use Git -submodules and the reason for repo -fragmentation is due to roles and size, certain repos such as graphic -repos tend to be quite large so better to keep them separate. Basically this just made /proc/*/cmdline be mode 0600, and ps handles that properly by showing that the process exists but not its arguments. This is kind of nice if someone on a multiuser machine is running say vi christmas-presents.txt, to use the canonical example. Is there any supported way to do this in Ubuntu, other than by installing a new kernel? (I'm familiar with the technique that lets individual programs alter their argv, but most programs don't do that and anyhow it is racy. This stackoverflow user seems to be asking the same question, but actually just seems very confused.)

• Are the contents in the front page considered as duplicate of the post?

In Wordpress blogs, the front page of the blog will display many posts in whole or excerpts. When the link to the post is clicked, the content will be opened with an other template file(single.php). Can we say that the content displayed in the front page and the post pages are considered as duplicate? Does it harm SEO in any way?

• .htaccess mobile redirect issues

  I'm trying to set up a mobile redirect for a site with 2 subfolders, and I cannot get both to work at the same time. This is the structure of the site www.mysite.com/EN/ www.mysite.com/ES/ This is a bilingual site so each subfolder contains the files corresponding to each language version. Then I was using a 301 redirect, and setting up the index in /EN/ as the main index. Everything was getting redirected to it. I was using DirectoryIndex index.html Redirect /index.html http://www.mysite.com/EN/index.html and several Rewritecond to redirect mysite.com and old urls to the new URL. It worked fine before I decided to add a mobile version - m.mysite.com. I used the solution provided in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3680463/mobile-redirect-using-htaccess, and it redirects my mobile version properly, but now the desktop is both working. Besides, my mobile version must be bilingual as well.

Since they are very similar to challenges ("prove this and this can be done" rather than "supply the code"), we thought of posting them as challenges and offer prizes to the first guys who will crack them up. The outsourcing sites I know off (TopCoder, ODesk) are more interested in long term contracts with monthly pay. Is there a site better matching my needs out there?

• Google Analytics - how to track clicks on a screen?

  Can I track the click of every link, button, dropdown select, etc. on a screen and have it be tracked in Google Analytics? I want to create a page and collect data on which widget the users use most. What about AJAX stuff? What if you're using jQuery or Mootools...can you get the functions to register a fake URL with GA based on user interaction? I use to do this with Flash. Everytime you click a button, it can initiate a fake URL request. I would make urls such as ".../customize/eyes/" or ".../customize/nose", etc. Just wondering if I can do that with Javascript on the page. I've also posted at StackOverflow.

• Should I include everything in the sitemap or only new content?

  For a website with dynamic content (new content is constantly being added), should I only include the newest content in the sitemap or should I include everything (with a sitemap index)? What are the best practices for sitemaps esp. for large sites? Also, is there anyway to make google (and other search engines) only crawl the pages in the sitemap?
