• SQL query construction - separate data in a column into two columns

  I have a column that contains links. The problem is that the titles of the links are in the same column, so it looks like this: linktitle|-|linkurl I want link title and linkurl in separate columns. I've created a new column for the urls, so I'm looking for a way to extract them and update the linkurl column with them. Is there any clever way to construct a query that does this?

• What advantages do we have when creating a separate mapping table for two relational tables

  In various open source CMS, I have noticed that there is a separate table for mapping two relational tables. Like for categories and products, there is a separate product_category_mapping table. This table just has a primary key and two foreign keys from the categories and product tables. My question is what are the benefits of this database design rather than just linking the tables directly by defining a foreign key in either table? Is it just matter of convenience?

• Attaching two objects and changing their world matrices accordingly

  I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the transformations required to bind two objects together in either a two-way or one-way relationship. I will need to implement both types. For the first case, I want to be able to 'couple' two ships together in space. The ships have different mass, of course. Forces applied to either ship will use combined mass and moment of inertia to calculate and move both ships. The trick is, being sure that the point at which they are coupled remains the same, and they don't move at all relative to each other. The second case is similar: I want a ship to be able to enter the atmosphere of a planet and move relative to the planet. The planet will be orbiting the sun, which is fixed at 0,0,0. Essentially, when the ship is sitting still outside of the atmosphere, the planet will move past it on its course-- but when the ship is sitting still inside the atmosphere, it moves and rotates with the planet, so that it is always relative to the horizon. Essentially, the vertices which make up the ship are now transformed just like the ones that make up the planet, except that the ship can move itself around relative to the planet. I get the feeling I can implement both of these with the same code. Essentially, I am thinking of giving each object (which I call Fixtures) a list of "slave" Fixtures onto which that Fixture's world matrix is imposed. So, this would be the planet imposing its world on any contained ships. In the case of coupling, I would simply make each ship a slave of the other, somehow. Obviously I can't just multiply the ship's world matrix by the planet's, or each ship by the others. What I'd like some help with is what calculations to make in order to get a nice, seamless relative world to the other object. I was thinking maybe I could just multiply the world of the slave by the inverse of the master, but then when you couple two ships you would lose all that world data. So, perhaps I need an intermediate "world" which is the absolute world, but use a secondary "final world" to actually transform the objects?

• Thundrbird 3: can't change column width?

  I recently installed Thunderbird 3.0.3. Just noticed a suboptimal UI setting: in the upper pane, which lists the e-mails in the current folder, the Date column is about 200px wide. So when I keep the window at 480x600, all I see in a row is: | tree icon | favourites icon | attachment icon | read icon | junk icon | Date and time, followed by 5cm whitespace | ... | P Where "P" is the first letter of the name of the sender. And the "..." is actually shown this way, I have no idea which column it is meant to be. But I don't see neither the sender, nor the message subject, which makes scrolling a folder for a certain mail rather pointless. I see these when I maximize the window, actually the columns are then not only bigger, they are arranged in another sequence. But I feel that holding a mail client permanently maximised at 1600x1200 is a waste of screen real estate. My naive solution attempt was to try to go with the mouse cursor to the right edge of the date column and try to shrink it by moving the cursor left while holding down the left mouse button. Not only is this default behaviour for all resizable columns I've ever encountered in GUIs, the cursor actually turns into a horizontal double-headed arrow. But pulling has no effect at all. I cannot make a wide column narrow, and I cannot make the narrow columns wide. I didn't find anything in the preferences either. So can please somebody explain how to get the columns arranged sensibly?

• Copy/paste filtered column in Excel - error message

  Firstly I should state that I don't believe in spreadsheets; my normal mode of operation is that data should either exist in a database or a text file... However - employment requires... In short, I have filtered a worksheet by column A, and I want to copy/paste from column B to column C. Obviously I don't wish to copy/paste values from rows that were filtered-out here. The above sounds ridiculously simple, right? First I tried simply copy/pasting on the filtered worksheet. This appeared to select and copy only the filtered data, however pasting appeared to insert values into hidden/filtered rows - as you might expect. So my initial research suggests I may wish to select the filtered data and press Alt+; (that is, ALT plus semicolon), which is a shortcut key for Goto Special Select Visible. Then just copy-paste. CTRL+C correctly copies the filtered data, however when I go to paste the values into another column, it pastes into hidden rows as well. Okay, so perhaps I should also "Select Visible" on the cells I wish to paste into as well? Nope - that gives me the error That command cannot be used on multiple selections. What am I doing wrong?!

  I have a drupal 7 site using the Views module to back-end site content search results. The same query with the same dataset returns different results from MySQL 5.5.28 to MySQL 5.6.14. The results from 5.5.28 are the correct, expected results. The results from 5.6.14 are not. If, however, I simply move a column in the select statement, the query returns the correct results. Here is the code-generated query in question (modified for readability). • How to output multicolumn html without "widows"?

  I need to output to HTML a list of categorized links in exactly three columns of text. They must be displayed similar to columns in a newspaper or magazine. So, for example, if there are 20 lines total the first and second columns would contain 7 lines and the last column would contain 6. The list must be dynamic; it will be regularly changed. The tricky part is that the links are categorized with a title and this title cannot be a "widow". If you have a page layout background you'll know that this means the titles cannot be displayed at the bottom of the column -- they must have at least one link underneath them, otherwise they should bump to the next column (I know, technically it should be two lines if I were actually doing page layout, but in this case one is acceptable). I'm having a difficult time figuring out how to get this done. Here's an example of what I mean: Shopping Link 3 Link1 Link 1 Link 4 Link2 Link 2 Link 3 Link 3 Cars Link 1 Music Games Link 2 Link 1 Link 1 Link 2 News As you can see, the "News" title is at the bottom of the middle column, and so is a "widow". This is unacceptable. I could bump it to the next column, but that would create an unnecessarily large amount of white space at the bottom of the second column. What needs to happen instead is that the entire list needs to be re-balanced. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for how to accomplish this, or perhaps source code or a plug in. Python is preferable, but any language is fine. I'm just trying to get the general concept down.

  I'm not a webmaster, not even a web developer, but I'm tasked with adding content to a Wordpress site developed by Someone Else(TM). It shows up nice in Firefox: But in IE9 the floated picture pushed down the text in the table below, so that it looks rather awful: I found some related questions on the web, e.g. "CSS: Float right in IE doesn't work!" and "why does a floating DIV mess up table positioning?", and the suggestions there led me to set clear: none on the div around the table, the table itself, and then each individual tr and finally even on each individual td. I also set width="99%" on the table, and tried (but I don't know how correctly) to apply the IE6 quirk fix margin-right: -3px. However, I'm unable to reproduce the effect with default styling or with clear: none (as above). So it seems maybe it's something Wordpress does, or maybe it's something the theme thing or whatever it is does – but it's very similar to what others have observed, so there is strong indication that it's also a quirk in IE. Most fn+key are working except for: brightness keys (fn+f5/fn+f6) don't work. fn+c - gamma keys fc+v - camera fn+space - toggle speed. I really like, at least, to have the brightness keys working. • Window management shortcuts?

  I've got a single massive monitor at home, and I've decided to mimic the Windows 7 window tiling shortcuts. I found a few guides online using wmctrl, and it's going well, save one thing: maximized windows don't respond to it. gconftool-2 --type string --set /apps/metacity/keybinding_commands/command_1 "wmctrl -r :ACTIVE: -e 0, 0,0, `xwininfo -root | grep Width | awk '{ print ($2/2)}'`, `xwininfo -root | grep Height | awk '{ print $2 }'`" (I've added line returns to make an otherwise massive one-liner readable.) I've bound this to a hotkey and it works, unless the window is maximized. Any ideas on how to fix this up?

Again, I am prompted with a nice listbox with the following 4 options: none ibus lo-gtk th-gtk But I have no idea what these mean. I googled "ubuntu 10.04 keyboard input method system none ibus lo-gtk th-gtk" but all I could find was descriptions of problems, not an actual definition. Could you please point me to a webpage where I can learn about the meanings of these 4 different methods and +'s and -'s of each?

• Where are gnome keyboard shortcuts stored

  I usually load a new version for every release to keep my OS fresh while preserving the last version on another partition as backup. I also employ a lot of custom key mappings (IMHO, the defaults suck). I've figured out how to transfer the majority of my configuration across systems so far but I can't figure out where the custom keyboard shortcut mappings are stored. Does anybody know where gnome puts these? Are there separate user config (Ie. ~/) and system config (Ie. /etc) files?

• Is traditional JavaScript image pre-loading taboo

  I remember the good-old-days (not really) back when I was still sucking the teet of Dreamweaver to build websites and the lure of playing copypasta with fancy built-in scripts (ex, image-swap) was like black magic. I'm pretty far removed from that now days but I was adapting a small site from it's original FrontPage (::cringe::) format to a standard HTML/CSS implementation and couldn't help wondering... should I should re-implement the JavaScript image pre-loading into the current version? Or, is there a better way? I don't want to block the page from loading by requiring the user to request all the assets withing the page by using the traditional JavaScript pre-loader method. I value giving the user something to look at ASAP, and there's some potential harm to my Google mojo by doing so. Is there a cleaner solution to prevent unnecessary page-reflows during loading? • Desktop keyboard behaves like laptop keyboard when numlock is on

  I have fully updated ubuntu 12.04 installed on my desktop. The problem is when I turn on NumLock, the keyboard behaves like a laptop keyboard making the keys "mjkluio789" correspond to "0-9". I've had a laptop where such behavior was expected due to absence of a separate numpad. I'm using an iBall USB keyboard and it has a numpad section unlike laptop keyboards(http://iball.co.in/Product.aspx?c=2).

• Battling Emacs Pinky?

  My problem is not so much emacs pinky as much as having to work with multiple machines, across 3 operating systems, both desktop and laptop, with differing keyboard layouts and different locations for Ctrl and Alt\Meta keys so I often have to pause and think about where is the Ctrl key on this machine. How do you deal with varying keyboard layouts, between Mac keyboards (mostly the laptops) and PC keyboards (mostly 101 keys in my case, yes the original PC keyboard)? I have turned the Caps lock Key into a Ctrl key (losing the Caps lock function completely rather than swapping with Ctrl) on most of them but still find myself hunting for the original Ctrl labeled key most of the time. How do you deal with this keyboard confusion? Suggestions, ideas and feedback welcome.

• Extra buttons on Razer Anansi on Ubuntu 13.04

  I own a Razer Anansi keyboard and recently installed 13.04 after running 12.04 for over a year. On 12.04 I used xmodmap to map the thumb and macro keys to do useful stuff for me. This solution is based on keycodes which are triggered when a key is recognized. The problem is that on 13.04 this does not work for all keys anymore. The thumb keys T2, T3 and T4 (i.e. the middle 3 ones on the top of the 2 rows) in particular don't generate keycodes anymore while the rest still does. Now this is not completely surprising: pressing the affected keys in Unity generates notifications for what looks like Unity touchpad notifications. How can I shut that touchpad-subsystem up once and for all and give my keyboard keys back to my keyboard? Ideally I'd like to be able to use my .Xmodmap file again in 13.04 (and beyond) as that seems to me the most simple solution, but working alternatives are also welcome.

• Keyboard problems on Acer Laptop

  The key map on my Acer Aspire 5750 keyboard has gone awry since I had the keyboard replaced (because of physical fault with one of the keys). The new keyboard looks identical, but now Ubuntu seems a little confused about which (function) buttons are which. So previously Fn+left/right were, as marked on the keys, brightness up and down; Fn+up/down were volume. It all worked as advertised! But now Page Dn (which is marked as Page Dn or Back a track with Fn) is turning the volume up, and the others fn+arrow keys don't work at all. Is there a way I can see what's happening or get it to re-map my keys? Thanks.

• How do I clear xmodmap settings?

  Exactly what the title asks. How do I clear xmodmap settings? I have an IBM model M, and somehow xkeycaps got it into its head that my "End" key was not any key at all. xev reports keypresses when I use it, so I know the event is being generated by the keyboard. Also, xkeycaps thinks that my arrow keys are all wonky, and apparently the scrollbar is broken so it only scrolls down - so I can't scroll up to find an IBM keyboard that just maybe is close to my map so I can fix my keys. So I'm trying to reset my keyboard to the default settings, but the xmodmap manpage is woefully devoid of "reset all" or "clear all" or anything of that nature (that I was able to find). Help would be greatly appreciated!

• How to override the new limited keyboard repeat rate limit?

  I may be an alien around here, but here's my problem: the speed limit on old Ubuntu releases (= before 11) was very very fast. It was really great for me. Now, on Ubuntu 11, they may have thought: "who will ever want that speed? Nobody! So let's put the maximum speed to a lower limit". It's so stupid that they tried to narrow down the speed to some other famous OS. If Linux is more powerful, why remove some of its power? I don't get that. So is there any way to override that speed limit and get my keyboard as fast as it is on other previous versions?

  I am running Kubuntu 13.10 on a Lenovo G500 laptop. My question is similar to this one: How can I remap my F keys on my HP laptop? That is to say, my F1-F12 keys are mapped to certain special functions, and only holding down the Fn key restores access to the standard F1-F12 keys. How do I remap certain keys? I would like to know if there is a way to remap Fx to Fn+Fx and vice-versa. As per the instructions of #87043 I checked my BIOS and there is no option to switch the Fx/Fn key functionality. Googling through Leonovo's support forums indicates a BIOS update enabling this is in the works, but there's no indication of when it will be complete. Using xev I was able to see what X sees when F1-F12 are pressed.
