  • Your life will some day end; ACTA will live on

<b>ars Technica:</b> "The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) isn't just another secret treaty&#8212;it's a way of life. If ACTA passes in anything like its current form, it will create an entirely new international secretariat to administer and extend the agreement."

  • Will there be an option in the GUI to change the week-starting day in 11.04?

    - by Roddie
This has been problematic for me in Ubuntu since I live in the UK but want the week to start on a Sunday (because that is the system my work use). I've faffed about in the last couple of versions of Ubuntu to no avail (it changes in Evolution but not on the desktop calendar etc.) and don't want to be editing locale files. I understand it's probably an issue with GNOME so are there any plans to implement it with Unity? I find it baffling that an operating system doesn't have such a simple option that even my phones always seem to have had.

  • A new day has dawned in my SharePoint world.

    - by SPTales
Until I started working with SharePoint, I never thought I would be blogging.  I am usually a pretty private individual, but this thing called the SharePoint community pulls you in and makes you feel like you should be a part of it, contributing to it and giving something back.  So here I am blogging for the first time – and so begins my tale. I started my work life as a Systems admin, but was given a chance to start working with SharePoint 2007 back in - ironically enough - January of 2007.  It has been downhill from there or uphill depending on your perspective!  I jumped in with both feet and haven’t looked back.  Lucky for me Microsoft gave us a new version to work with.  A new job a couple years ago gave me the chance to work with that new version.  Now I spend my days weaving a tale of SharePoint for a Sales based organization. So why this blog?  To give something back. I spend most days toggling between administration, InfoPath, Branding and design, HTML, JQuery, and XSLT depending on the need.  The blog will detail these projects and solutions as best I can.  Hopefully they will be of use to someone who may be trying to accomplish similar things, just as many of the blogs that I have referenced over the last 5 years have been a huge help and resource for me.

  • How much work advanced level developer performs during the day, week or month? [closed]

    - by user1866998
I have never worked in the large IT-corporations, and it is very interesting for me of how much work advanced level developer has to perform during the period of, for example, a week or month. So what is the average performance and intensity of work of such a high class professionals expected by employers? I understand that the question is a bit abstract and the result depends on the set of different factors in every particular case, but I think that it is possibly to do the average and rough estimation or to give an example.

  • Assigning an event or command to a DataTemplate in ResourceDictionary

    - by Scott
I have the following class: public class Day { public int Date { get; set; } public String DayName { get; set; } public Day() { } public Day(int date, string dayName) { Date = date; DayName = dayName; CommandManager.RegisterClassCommandBinding(typeof(Day), new CommandBinding(DayClick, new ExecutedRoutedEventHandler(OnExecutedDayClick), new CanExecuteRoutedEventHandler(OnCanExecuteDayClick))); } public static readonly RoutedCommand DayClick = new RoutedCommand("DayClick", typeof(Day)); private static void OnCanExecuteDayClick(object sender, CanExecuteRoutedEventArgs e) { ((Day)sender).OnCanExecuteDayClick(e); } private static void OnExecutedDayClick(object sender, ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e) { ((Day)sender).OnExecutedDayClick(e); } protected virtual void OnCanExecuteDayClick(CanExecuteRoutedEventArgs e) { e.CanExecute = true; e.Handled = false; } protected virtual void OnExecutedDayClick(ExecutedRoutedEventArgs e) { string content = String.Format("Day {0}, which is {1}, was clicked.", Date.ToString(), DayName); MessageBox.Show(content); e.Handled = true; } } I am using the following DataTemplate (that is in a ResourceDictionary) to render it: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type local:Day}"> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition/> <ColumnDefinition/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Rectangle Grid.ColumnSpan="2" x:Name="rectHasEntry" Fill="WhiteSmoke"/> <TextBlock Grid.Column="0" x:Name="textBlockDayName" Text="{Binding DayName}" FontFamily="Junction" FontSize="11" Background="Transparent" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="0,2,0,0"/> <TextBlock Grid.Column="1" x:Name="textBlockDate" Text="{Binding Date}" FontFamily="Junction" FontSize="11" Background="Transparent" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="0,2,0,0"/> <Rectangle Grid.ColumnSpan="2" x:Name="rectMouseOver" Fill="#A2C0DA" Opacity="0" Style="{StaticResource DayRectangleMouseOverStyle}"> </Rectangle> </Grid> </DataTemplate> No problems so far, I can get it on screen. What I want to be able to do is assign a Command, or use an event, so that when the user clicks on the Day it will notify the parent of the Day object that it has been clicked. I've tried the following: <Rectangle.CommandBindings> <CommandBinding Command="{x:Static local:Day.NextDay}" Executed="{x:Static local:Day.OnExecutedDayClick}" CanExecute="{x:Static local:Day.OnCanExecuteDayClick}"/> </Rectangle.CommandBindings> to try and bind the commands that are in the Day class but it didn't work. I got an error stating: 'ResourceDictionary' root element requires a x:Class attribute to support event handlers in the XAML file. Either remove the event handler for the Executed event, or add a x:Class attribute to the root element. Which I think means that there is no code-behind file for a ResourceDictionary, or something to that effect. In any event, I'm not sure if I should be using Commands here, or somehow tying events to the Rectangle in question, or if this is even possible. I've seen various places where it sure looks like it's possible, I'm just unable to translate what I'm seeing into something that actually works, hence this post. Thanks in advance.

  • Time Tracking on an Agile Team

    - by Stephen.Walther
What’s the best way to handle time-tracking on an Agile team? Your gut reaction to this question might be to resist any type of time-tracking at all. After all, one of the principles of the Agile Manifesto is “Individuals and interactions over processes and tools”.  Forcing the developers on your team to track the amount of time that they devote to completing stories or tasks might seem like useless bureaucratic red tape: an impediment to getting real work done. I completely understand this reaction. I’ve been required to use time-tracking software in the past to account for each hour of my workday. It made me feel like Fred Flintstone punching in at the quarry mine and not like a professional. Why You Really Do Need Time-Tracking There are, however, legitimate reasons to track time spent on stories even when you are a member of an Agile team.  First, if you are working with an outside client, you might need to track the number of hours spent on different stories for the purposes of billing. There might be no way to avoid time-tracking if you want to get paid. Second, the Product Owner needs to know when the work on a story has gone over the original time estimated for the story. The Product Owner is concerned with Return On Investment. If the team has gone massively overtime on a story, then the Product Owner has a legitimate reason to halt work on the story and reconsider the story’s business value. Finally, you might want to track how much time your team spends on different types of stories or tasks. For example, if your team is spending 75% of their time doing testing then you might need to bring in more testers. Or, if 10% of your team’s time is expended performing a software build at the end of each iteration then it is time to consider better ways of automating the build process. Time-Tracking in SonicAgile For these reasons, we added time-tracking as a feature to SonicAgile which is our free Agile Project Management tool. We were heavily influenced by Jeff Sutherland (one of the founders of Scrum) in the way that we implemented time-tracking (see his article http://scrum.jeffsutherland.com/2007/03/time-tracking-is-anti-scrum-what-do-you.html). In SonicAgile, time-tracking is disabled by default. If you want to use this feature then the project owner must enable time-tracking in Project Settings. You can choose to estimate using either days or hours. If you are estimating at the level of stories then it makes more sense to choose days. Otherwise, if you are estimating at the level of tasks then it makes more sense to use hours. After you enable time-tracking then you can assign three estimates to a story: Original Estimate – This is the estimate that you enter when you first create a story. You don’t change this estimate. Time Spent – This is the amount of time that you have already devoted to the story. You update the time spent on each story during your daily standup meeting. Time Left – This is the amount of time remaining to complete the story. Again, you update the time left during your daily standup meeting. So when you first create a story, you enter an original estimate that becomes the time left. During each daily standup meeting, you update the time spent and time left for each story on the Kanban. If you had perfect predicative power, then the original estimate would always be the same as the sum of the time spent and the time left. For example, if you predict that a story will take 5 days to complete then on day 3, the story should have 3 days spent and 2 days left. Unfortunately, never in the history of mankind has anyone accurately predicted the exact amount of time that it takes to complete a story. For this reason, SonicAgile does not update the time spent and time left automatically. Each day, during the daily standup, your team should update the time spent and time left for each story. For example, the following table shows the history of the time estimates for a story that was originally estimated to take 3 days but, eventually, takes 5 days to complete: Day Original Estimate Time Spent Time Left Day 1 3 days 0 days 3 days Day 2 3 days 1 day 2 days Day 3 3 days 2 days 2 days Day 4 3 days 3 days 2 days Day 5 3 days 4 days 0 days In the table above, everything goes as predicted until you reach day 3. On day 3, the team realizes that the work will require an additional two days. The situation does not improve on day 4. All of the sudden, on day 5, all of the remaining work gets done. Real work often follows this pattern. There are long periods when nothing gets done punctuated by occasional and unpredictable bursts of progress. We designed SonicAgile to make it as easy as possible to track the time spent and time left on a story. Detecting when a Story Goes Over the Original Estimate Sometimes, stories take much longer than originally estimated. There’s a surprise. For example, you discover that a new software component is incompatible with existing software components. Or, you discover that you have to go through a month-long certification process to finish a story. In those cases, the Product Owner has a legitimate reason to halt work on a story and re-evaluate the business value of the story. For example, the Product Owner discovers that a story will require weeks to implement instead of days, then the story might not be worth the expense. SonicAgile displays a warning on both the Backlog and the Kanban when the time spent on a story goes over the original estimate. An icon of a clock is displayed. Time-Tracking and Tasks Another optional feature of SonicAgile is tasks. If you enable Tasks in Project Settings then you can break stories into one or more tasks. You can perform time-tracking at the level of a story or at the level of a task. If you don’t break a story into tasks then you can enter the time left and time spent for the story. As soon as you break a story into tasks, then you can no longer enter the time left and time spent at the level of the story. Instead, the time left and time spent for a story is rolled up from its tasks. On the Kanban, you can see how the time left and time spent for each task gets rolled up into each story. The progress bar for the story is rolled up from the progress bars for each task. The original estimate is never rolled up – even when you break a story into tasks. A story’s original estimate is entered separately from the original estimates of each of the story’s tasks. Summary Not every Agile team can avoid time-tracking. You might be forced to track time to get paid, to detect when you are spending too much time on a particular story, or to track the amount of time that you are devoting to different types of tasks. We designed time-tracking in SonicAgile to require the least amount of work to track the information that you need. Time-tracking is an optional feature. If you enable time-tracking then you can track the original estimate, time left, and time spent for each story and task. You can use time-tracking with SonicAgile for free. • Calculate year for end date: PostgreSQL

    - by Dave Jarvis
Background Users can pick dates as shown in the following screen shot: Any starting month/day and ending month/day combinations are valid, such as: Mar 22 to Jun 22 Dec 1 to Feb 28 The second combination is difficult (I call it the "tricky date scenario") because the year for the ending month/day is before the year for the starting month/day. That is to say, for the year 1900 (also shown selected in the screen shot above), the full dates would be: Dec 22, 1900 to Feb 28, 1901 Dec 22, 1901 to Feb 28, 1902 ... Dec 22, 2007 to Feb 28, 2008 Dec 22, 2008 to Feb 28, 2009 Problem Writing a SQL statement that selects values from a table with dates that fall between the start month/day and end month/day, regardless of how the start and end days are selected. In other words, this is a year wrapping problem. Inputs The query receives as parameters: Year1, Year2: The full range of years, independent of month/day combination. Month1, Day1: The starting day within the year to gather data. Month2, Day2: The ending day within the year (or the next year) to gather data. Previous Attempt Consider the following MySQL code (that worked): end_year = start_year + greatest( -1 * sign( datediff( date( concat_ws('-', year, end_month, end_day ) ), date( concat_ws('-', year, start_month, start_day ) ) ) ), 0 ) How it works, with respect to the tricky date scenario: Create two dates in the current year. The first date is Dec 22, 1900 and the second date is Feb 28, 1900. Count the difference, in days, between the two dates. If the result is negative, it means the year for the second date must be incremented by 1. In this case: Add 1 to the current year. Create a new end date: Feb 28, 1901. Check to see if the date range for the data falls between the start and calculated end date. If the result is positive, the dates have been provided in chronological order and nothing special needs to be done. This worked in MySQL because the difference in dates would be positive or negative. In PostgreSQL, the equivalent functionality always returns a positive number, regardless of their relative chronological order. Question How should the following (broken) code be rewritten for PostgreSQL to take into consideration the relative chronological order of the starting and ending month/day pairs (with respect to an annual temporal displacement)? SELECT m.amount FROM measurement m WHERE (extract(MONTH FROM m.taken) >= month1 AND extract(DAY FROM m.taken) >= day1) AND (extract(MONTH FROM m.taken) <= month2 AND extract(DAY FROM m.taken) <= day2) Any thoughts, comments, or questions? (The dates are pre-parsed into MM/DD format in PHP. My preference is for a pure PostgreSQL solution, but I am open to suggestions on what might make the problem simpler using PHP.) Versions PostgreSQL 8.4.4 and PHP 5.2.10

  • Career Day in kindergarten: how to demonstrate programming in 20 minutes?

    - by Péter Török
I was invited to the kindergarten group of my elder daughter to talk, and aswer the kids' questions, about my profession. There are 26 kids of age 4-6 in the group (plus 3 teachers who are fairly scared of anything related to programming and IT themselves, but bold enough to learn new tricks). I would have about 20-30 minutes, without projector or anything. (They have an old computer though, which by its look may be a 486, and I am not even sure if it's functioning.) My research turned up excellent earlier threads, with lots of good tips: How would you explain your job to a 5-year old? Career Day: how do I make “computer programmer” sound cool to 8 year olds? What things can I teach a group of children about programming in one day? My situation is different from each of the above though. So any advice on how to teach the kids (and their teachers) in a fun way about programming is appreciated.

  • What kind of server do I need to handle 10 million requests and mySQL queries a day?

    - by Calvin
I'm a new bie of server administration and I'm looking for a powerful hosting service to host my new website. This website is basically a back-end of an mobile online game, and it will: handle up to 10 million of HTTPS request and mySQL queries a day store up to 2000 GB file on the hard disk transfer probably 5000 GB data in and out per month it runs on PHP and mySQL have 10 million records in mySQL database, for each record there are 5-10 fields, around 100 bytes each I really don't know what kind of a server I need to handle these requirements, my question is: what cpu/ram do I need for a dedicated server or vps? what hosting companies are able to offer this kind of dedicated server or VPS? what about cloud computing? I've researched Amazon EC2 but it seems complicated to me. And I've contacted Rackspace but strangely they said Cloudsites is not suitable for my requirements. I wonder if there is other cloud hosting company. any other alternative method? thanks very much!

  • D-Day Calendar has wrong dates when importing from google calendar?

    - by chobo2
Hi I am using D-Day calendar and I am not sure but I got a weird problem. I basically have this for my code iCalendar iCal = iCalendar.LoadFromStream(file.InputStream); foreach (Event evt in iCal.Events) { DateTime start = evt.DTStart.Date; DateTime end = evt.DTEnd.Date; // loop through it and get values. } Yet when I import a calendar from google calendar the end date is messed up on some of the stuff I am importing. Like for instance I have this Title: should not show When: Sun, March 21(all day). Yet when I import it in. I says the start date is the 21st yet the end date is the 22nd when it should be the 21st. Not sure what is going on. I am not really sure what other info I can give you guys.

  • Trouble displaying an object in WPF

    - by Scott
I'm so new to this that I can't even phrase the question right... Anyway, I'm trying to do something very simple and have been unable to figure it out. I have the following class: public class Day : Control, INotifyPropertyChanged { public static readonly DependencyProperty DateProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("Date", typeof(int), typeof(Day)); public int Date { get { return (int)GetValue(DateProperty); } set { SetValue(DateProperty, value); if (PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("Date")); } } } public static readonly DependencyProperty DayNameProperty = DependencyProperty.Register("DayName", typeof(String), typeof(Day)); public String DayName { get { return (String)GetValue(DayNameProperty); } set { SetValue(DayNameProperty, value); if (PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs("DayName")); } } } static Day() { DefaultStyleKeyProperty.OverrideMetadata(typeof(Day), new FrameworkPropertyMetadata(typeof(Day))); } #region INotifyPropertyChanged Members public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; #endregion } I've learned that you can't call a constructor that has parameters in XAML so the only way to actually set some data for this class is through the two properties, DayName and Date. I created a ControlTemplate for Day which is as follows: <Style TargetType="{x:Type con:Day}"> <Setter Property="MinHeight" Value="20"/> <Setter Property="MinWidth" Value="80"/> <Setter Property="Height" Value="20"/> <Setter Property="Width" Value="80"/> <Setter Property="Template"> <Setter.Value> <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type con:Day}"> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition/> <ColumnDefinition/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <Rectangle Grid.ColumnSpan="2" x:Name="rectHasEntry" Fill="WhiteSmoke"/> <TextBlock Grid.Column="0" x:Name="textBlockDayName" Text="{TemplateBinding DayName}" FontFamily="Junction" FontSize="11" Background="Transparent" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="0,2,0,0"/> <TextBlock Grid.Column="1" x:Name="textBlockDate" Text="{TemplateBinding Date}" FontFamily="Junction" FontSize="11" Background="Transparent" HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center" Margin="0,2,0,0"/> <Rectangle Grid.ColumnSpan="2" x:Name="rectMouseOver" Fill="#A2C0DA" Opacity="0" Style="{StaticResource DayRectangleMouseOverStyle}"/> </Grid> </ControlTemplate> </Setter.Value> </Setter> </Style> I then render it on screen in my MainWindow thusly: <Window x:Class="WPFControlLibrary.TestHarness.MainWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" xmlns:con="clr-namespace:WPFControlLibrary.Calendar;assembly=WPFControlLibrary" Title="MainWindow" Height="500" Width="525" WindowStartupLocation="CenterScreen"> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="*"/> <ColumnDefinition Width="80"/> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <con:Day Grid.Column="1" Height="20" Width="80" DayName="Mon" Date="1"/> </Grid> And what I actually see is, well, nothing. If I put my cursor on the con:Day line of the XAML it'll highlight the correctly sized rectangle in the window but I don't see "Mon" on the left side of the rectangle and "1" on the right. What am I doing wrong? I suspect it's something simple but I'll be darned if I'm seeing it. My ultimate goal is to group a bunch of the Day controls within a Month control, which is then contained in a Year control as I'm trying to make a long Calendar Bar that lets you navigate through the months and years, while clicking on a Day would display any information saved on that date. But I can't even get the Day part to display independent of anything else so I'm a long way from the rest of the functionality. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to calculate the sum of a column in an MS Access table for a given date (a single day, month or year)

    - by cMinor
    I have a table in Access in a custom format saved as dd/MM/yyyy hh:mm:ss tt , Also A form in VB.NET 2010, I get a specific day, month and year with no problem but the problem comes when I want to query the sum of a column named value depending on a specific month or day or year.... The table is like: +-----+-----------+-------------------------+ | id | value | date | +-----+-----------+-------------------------+ | id1 | 1499 | 01/01/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id2 | 1509 | 11/02/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id3 | 1611 | 21/10/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id1 | 1115 | 11/10/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id1 | 1499 | 17/05/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id2 | 1709 | 11/06/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id3 | 1911 | 30/07/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id1 | 1015 | 01/08/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| | id1 | 1000 | 11/05/2012 07:30:11 p.m.| |+-----+-----------+------------------------+ So I Know the query SELECT SUM(value) FROM mytable WHERE date in='01/05/2012 00:00:00' ... How to tell the query I want the month of May so I would get 1499+1000= 2499 Or how to tell I want the year 2012 so I would get the sum of all the table Which would be the correct syntax...

  • Why do I get a "Day too big" error from Perl?

    - by azp74
I have been helping someone debug some code where the error message was "Day too big". I know that this springs from localtime and the Y2038 bug (most google results appear to be people dealing with cookies expiring well into the future). We appear to have 'fixed' the problem by using time to get the current date. However, given that none of our original dates should have hit the 2038 issue I'm sceptical that we've actually fixed the problem ... Are there other instances that anyone knows of where one would hit "day too big"? OS is Solaris. Sample code - the actual code is quite large and the person I'm working with hasn't actually isolated the offending part (which is why I'm worried the 'fix' is not actually a fix). If I can put together something concise which reproduces the issue I will post!

  • Will I have internet connection issues next day, if I unplug router at night?

    - by headskracher77
I did this regularly a few years ago and used to feel like I was 'being punished' by the Interent svc provider for disabling access to my computer, because trying to re-connect the next day became a constant pain. I have the same linksys router, a comcast modem, and hi-speed broadband through their LAN. Question: who or what is at fault for lousy internet connections, slow connections, or no connections: (everybody's tech dept. blames everybody else) The router? 10 year olds, maybe obsolete? The modem? came with the service plan - can connect three devices on a sharedconnection. The ISP: I read they not only even control and completely regulate bandwidth usage, but they also ration it!! (true?) So can I safely 'pull the plug' each night for security or not? thnx

  • What kind of eye wear can I use to protect my eyes from staring at a screen all day?

    - by dr dork
Many of us stare at computer screens all day. Lately, my eyes have been irritated from prolonged staring at my computer screens. Does anyone use or know of any eye wear technology that helps with this? About five years back, I bought a pair of prescription-1 eye glasses that had a no-glare layer put on them. It slightly helped, so I'm considering getting another pair. Is this the best option I have at this point? Thanks so much in advance for your wisdom!

  • Why does the command forfiles list files that are not a day old despite the command being otherwise?

    - by PeanutsMonkey
The command I am executing is forfiles -p"C:\testdata" -m*.* -d-1 -c"cmd /c echo @PATH\@FILE" I have specified that I wish to only list files that are a day old however when I execute the statement, it returns me a list of files that were created today. Why is that? Am I doing something wrong? Would it be better to specify a time period as opposed to a date e.g. 24 hours? The version of forfiles I have reads as follows FORFILES v 1.1 - [email protected] - 4/98. The batch file is being run on Windows XP.

  • Rails/SQl query help: Find all by created_at in past 7 days per each day?

    - by Senthil
I'm unable to get SQL and Rails to play properly when trying to find Categories that are created each day, the past 7 days. So basically I want to find each Category sorted by the day they were created for the past 7 days. I found this on stackoverflow, but it isn't finding a Category that I just created: Category.all(:conditions => ["created_at > ? AND created_at < ?", t.at_beginning_of_day, t.tomorrow.at_beginning_of_day]) Any help?
