• System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement functions fail to probe some machines (but not others)

  Both the working and failing targets are machines in the same domain. Code is down below. When I use it against some machines in my domain, I get a System.DirectoryServices.AccountManagement.PrincipalOperationException with a message: "While trying to retrieve the authorization groups, an error (1332) occurred." The error is thrown by GetAuthorizationGroups(). Note: The username I use to connect is a local admin to the machine in both cases. • How to scale MySQL with multiple machines?

  I have a web app running LAMP. We recently have an increase in load and is now looking at solutions to scale. Scaling apache is pretty easy we are just going to have multiple multiple machines hosting it and round robin the incoming traffic. However, each instance of apache will talk with MySQL and eventually MySQL will be overloaded. How to scale MySQL across multiple machines in this setup? I have already looked at this but specifically we need the updates from the DB available immediately so I don't think replication is a good strategy here? Also hopefully this can be done with minimal code change. PS. We have around a 1:1 read-write ratio.

• Unable to run OpenMPI across more than two machines

  When attempting to run the first example in the boost::mpi tutorial, I was unable to run across more than two machines. Specifically, this seemed to run fine: mpirun -hostfile hostnames -np 4 boost1 with each hostname in hostnames as <node_name> slots=2 max_slots=2. But, when I increase the number of processes to 5, it just hangs. I have decreased the number of slots/max_slots to 1 with the same result when I exceed 2 machines. On the nodes, this shows up in the job list: <user> Ss orted --daemonize -mca ess env -mca orte_ess_jobid 388497408 \ -mca orte_ess_vpid 2 -mca orte_ess_num_procs 3 -hnp-uri \ 388497408.0;tcp://<node_ip>:48823 Additionally, when I kill it, I get this message: node2- daemon did not report back when launched node3- daemon did not report back when launched The cluster is set up with the mpi and boost libs accessible on an NFS mounted drive. Am I running into a deadlock with NFS? Or, is something else going on?

• Different versions in manifest on different machines

  Hi guys, Have two machines, both with VS2005 SP1 installed and with the WinSXS showing the same things installed. When one machine builds a particular C++ .dll .vcproj it ends up with <assemblyIdentity type='win32' name='Microsoft.VC80.MFC' version='8.0.50727.762' processorArchitecture='x86' publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b' /> in its manifest file. But on the other machine it ends up with <assemblyIdentity type='win32' name='Microsoft.VC80.MFC' version='8.0.50608.0 processorArchitecture='x86' publicKeyToken='1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b' /> even though this machine does not have '8.0.50608.0' libraries listed in its WinSXS. The .dll built on this machine with the older version referenced has some problems. I have ensured both machines have the same latest source code and references etc.. What could be causing it to build with the different reference? Thanks! Terry

• Memory is leaked only in some machines.

  We've got a situation where our application is leaking memory while doing some periodic action. The test scenario is composed of a series of processes across two relatively complex WPF windows. The weird thing about the situation is that memory only gets leaked on SOME machines, while others, having exactly the same hardware, can be working for really long times (repeating the process every minute) having their memory almost unchanged (once the GC gets rid of used memory, etc). This is .NET + WPF. Any ideas about where to start looking? What can cause leaks in only some machines? (we're talking about a 30 machine test scenario). I have few experience with WPF, could the graphic card had anything to do with it?

• VM automatic provisioning advice

  In my lab we have 24 workstations, each with five technician-maintained virtual machines set up in VMware Workstation. These provide a lot of management overhead, as we have to update them as well as the host operating systems every three months (the start of the next quarter), which adds up to 144 systems to update instead of just 24. Whenever we need to reimage the hosts, the VMs add another 130GB to each image, which is over 3TB of extra data to send over the network, and a lot more time to apply each image, and then we still have to boot all 120 VMs and assign them a unique IP Address and host names. We would like to get the VMs off the hosts and onto a server, but after looking around for a few days, I still don't know where to begin looking for a solution. There may be a better way to do this, but in my mind, the ideal solution would be to replace the VMs on the host machines with five Thin Client operating systems, each configured to connect to a server and be sent or connected to a unique virtual machine. We can't have 120 VMs running on the server all the time, so the server would have to create a copy of the VM from a template whenever a student tries to boot one, and destroy the VM after the student is finished with it. If there is another client application that has to be installed on the hosts that would be fine, the only reason I'd like to keep them in VMware Workstation is because students already know to look there for the VMs when they need to use them. What, if any, virtualization software will allow this? Is there some other solution I'm not seeing?

I'm not a systems admin professional, and I'd hate to end up banging my head into the wall if I can avoid it. Goals: Create a 'road-warrior' capable star shaped virtual LAN for consultants who spend the majority of their time on client sites, and who's firm has no physical network or servers. Enable CIFS access to a cloud-server based installation of Alfresco Allow Eventual implementation of some form of single-sign-on ( OpenLDAP server ) access to Alfresco and other server applications implemented in the future Given: All Servers will live in the public internet cloud (Rackspace Cloud Servers) OpenVPN Server will be a Linux disto, probably Ubuntu 9.x, installed on same server as Alfresco (at least to start) Staff will access server applications and resources from client sites, hotels, trains, planes, coffee shops or their homes over various ISP, using their company laptops or personal home desktops. • Why does this cast to Base class in virtual function give a segmentation fault?

  I want to print out a derived class using the operator<<. When I print the derived class, I want to first print its base and then its own content. • while upgrading a virtual machine do I need to install a bootloader

  I have a virtualization server which is having a few virtual machines running at top of it. All this was done using Ubuntu server edition with KVM and using virt-manager on SSH connection. These VMs are Lucid 10.04 64 bit Vms. When I upgrade them via apt-get upgrade on an SSH connection in between the ncurses screen, it asks me if it should install a bootloader and to select Yes or No for it. I have no clue what should I select here and I cancel the upgrade.Since it is a production machine I can not specify any thing like this. So let me know what will be a correct.

• Sparse virtual machine disk image resizing weirdness?

  I have a partitioned virtual machine disk image created by vmware. What I want to do is resize that by 10GB. The file size is showing as 64424509440. Or 60GB. So I ran this: dd if=/dev/zero of=./win7.img seek=146800640 count=0 It ran without errors and I can verify the new size is in fact 75161927680 bytes or 70GB. This is where it gets a little odd. I started the guest domain in xen which is a Windows 7 enterprise machine. What I was expecting to see in diskmgmt.msc is 2 partitions. 1 system partition at the start of around 100MB and near 60GB partition (which is C drive) followed by around 10GB of free space. Actually what I saw was a 70GB partition!?! That confused me... so I decided to run the Check Disk which when you set it on the C drive it asks you to reboot so it'll run on boot. So I did that and during the boot it ran the checks. It got all the way through stage 3 and didn't show any errors at all. Looked at the partitions in disk manager and now C drive has shrunk back to 60GB and there is no free space. What gives? Ok, I thought I'd try mounting it under Dom0 and examining it with fdisk. When I run sudo cfdisk /dev/xvda I get: FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 1: Partition ends in the final partial cylinder Press any key to exit cfdisk So I guess this is a bigger problem than first thought. How can I fix this? EDIT: Oops, the cylinder boundary thing is not a problem at all since disks have used LBA etc. So that threw me for a moment... still the problem exists... • Multiple git repos in plesk virtual hosts

  Each plesk vhost only has one user access that httpdocs directory. I want to manage a whole bunch of separate virtual hosts using Git. Does this mean installing a separate Git repository with a separate user / ssh public key combination for each virtual host or is there a way of centralising it at all? Gitosis sounds like it might help - but I'm not sure if it gets round pushing the files to each virtual host.

• Bridging Virtual Networking into Real LAN on a OpenNebula Cluster

  I'm running Open Nebula with 1 Cluster Controller and 3 Nodes. I registered the nodes at the front-end controller and I can start an Ubuntu virtual machine on one of the nodes. However from my network I cannot ping the virtual machine. I am not quite sure if I have set up the virtual machine correctly. The Nodes all have a br0 interfaces which is bridged with eth0. The IP Address is in the 192.168.1.x range. The Template file I used for the vmnet is: NAME = "VM LAN" TYPE = RANGED BRIDGE = br0 # Replace br0 with the bridge interface from the cluster nodes NETWORK_ADDRESS = 192.168.1.128 # Replace with corresponding IP address NETWORK_SIZE = 126 NETMASK = 255.255.255.0 GATEWAY = 192.168.1.1 NS = 192.168.1.1 However, I cannot reach any of the virtual machines even though sunstone says that the virtual machine is running and onevm list also states that the vm is running. It might be helpful to know that we are using KVM as a hypervisor and I am not quite sure if the virbr0 interface which was automatically created when installing KVM might be a problem.

• IE Kerberos failure on some machines with CNAME web server (with SPN for host's A record)

  It's fairly well known that IE doesn't like to do Kerberos against hosts that are registered in DNS as CNAMEs. What happens is that IE turns around and uses the underlying A record for the host for looking up the Service Principal Name (SPN). On a test network we are able to get Kerberos working by having the SPN registered for the A record of the host, so that Kerberos authentication happens successfully when accessing the web server via it's CNAME in the browser. Kerberos authentication works properly when directly accessing the web server with the A record host in the URL, but for various reasons that are beyond my control, it is desired to use the CNAME. On the production network, this same configuration fails though and I can't figure out why. Any thoughts? This is a java web application using the SPNEGO library - not IIS. Kerberos authentication is working properly in both the test and production networks (and has been confirmed to not fail back to NTLM), but the CNAME access only works in test.

• Time not propagating to machines on Windows domain

  We have a two-domain Active Directory forest: ourcompany.com at the root, and prod.ourcompany.com for production servers. Time is propagating properly through the root domain, but servers in the child domain are unable to sync via NTP. So the time on these servers is starting to drift, since they're relying only on the hardware clock. WHen I type "net time" on one of the production servers, I get the following error: Could not locate a time-server. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3912. When I type "w32tm /resync", i get the following: Sending resync command to local computer The computer did not resync because no time data was available. "w32tm /query /source" shows the following: Free-running System Clock We have three domain controllers in the prod.ourcompany.com subdomain (overkill, but the result of a migration - we haven't gotten rid of one of the old ones yet.) To complicate matters, the domain controllers are all virtualized, running on two different physical hosts. But the time on the domain controllers themselves is accurate - the servers that aren't DCs are the ones having problems. Two of the DCs are running Server 2003, including the PDC emulator. The third DC is running Server 2008. (I could move the PDC emulator role to the 2008 machine if that would help.) The non-DC servers are all running Server 2008. All other Active Directory functionality works fine in the production domain - we're only seeing problems with NTP. I can manually sync each machine to the time source (the PDC emulator) by doing the following: net time \\dc1.prod.ourcompany.com /set /y But this is just a one-off, and it doesn't cause automated time syncing to start working. I guess I could create a scheduled task which runs the above command periodically, but I'm hoping there's a better way. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this isn't working, and what we can do to fix it? Thanks for your help, Richard
