  • Technical Computing Initiative, Jim Gray and a Virtual Framed Letter on my Wall

Today Microsoft announced their Technical Computing Initiative, a program to help scientists and engineers take advantage of the latest breakthroughs in parallel computing, bandwidth increases, and technologies that will make doing scientific research akin to using spreadsheets (as opposed to writing really complex custom code).  This is actually the culmination of work that the late Jim Gray, formerly a technical fellow at Microsoft, was working on. I didn't really know Jim, and frankly only...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Help with InvalidCastException

    - by Robert
    I have a gridview and, when a record is double-clicked, I want it to open up a new detail-view form for that particular record. As an example, I have created a Customer class: using System; using System.Data; using System.Configuration; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.Collections; namespace SyncTest { #region Customer Collection public class CustomerCollection : BindingListView<Customer> { public CustomerCollection() : base() { } public CustomerCollection(List<Customer> customers) : base(customers) { } public CustomerCollection(DataTable dt) { foreach (DataRow oRow in dt.Rows) { Customer c = new Customer(oRow); this.Add(c); } } } #endregion public class Customer : INotifyPropertyChanged, IEditableObject, IDataErrorInfo { private string _CustomerID; private string _CompanyName; private string _ContactName; private string _ContactTitle; private string _OldCustomerID; private string _OldCompanyName; private string _OldContactName; private string _OldContactTitle; private bool _Editing; private string _Error = string.Empty; private EntityStateEnum _EntityState; private Hashtable _PropErrors = new Hashtable(); public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; private void FirePropertyChangeNotification(string propName) { if (PropertyChanged != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propName)); } } public Customer() { this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Unchanged; } public Customer(DataRow dr) { //Populates the business object item from a data row this.CustomerID = dr["CustomerID"].ToString(); this.CompanyName = dr["CompanyName"].ToString(); this.ContactName = dr["ContactName"].ToString(); this.ContactTitle = dr["ContactTitle"].ToString(); this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Unchanged; } public string CustomerID { get { return _CustomerID; } set { _CustomerID = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("CustomerID"); } } public string CompanyName { get { return _CompanyName; } set { _CompanyName = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("CompanyName"); } } public string ContactName { get { return _ContactName; } set { _ContactName = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("ContactName"); } } public string ContactTitle { get { return _ContactTitle; } set { _ContactTitle = value; FirePropertyChangeNotification("ContactTitle"); } } public Boolean IsDirty { get { return ((this.EntityState != EntityStateEnum.Unchanged) || (this.EntityState != EntityStateEnum.Deleted)); } } public enum EntityStateEnum { Unchanged, Added, Deleted, Modified } void IEditableObject.BeginEdit() { if (!_Editing) { _OldCustomerID = _CustomerID; _OldCompanyName = _CompanyName; _OldContactName = _ContactName; _OldContactTitle = _ContactTitle; } this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Modified; _Editing = true; } void IEditableObject.CancelEdit() { if (_Editing) { _CustomerID = _OldCustomerID; _CompanyName = _OldCompanyName; _ContactName = _OldContactName; _ContactTitle = _OldContactTitle; } this.EntityState = EntityStateEnum.Unchanged; _Editing = false; } void IEditableObject.EndEdit() { _Editing = false; } public EntityStateEnum EntityState { get { return _EntityState; } set { _EntityState = value; } } string IDataErrorInfo.Error { get { return _Error; } } string IDataErrorInfo.this[string columnName] { get { return (string)_PropErrors[columnName]; } } private void DataStateChanged(EntityStateEnum dataState, string propertyName) { //Raise the event if (PropertyChanged != null && propertyName != null) { PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); } //If the state is deleted, mark it as deleted if (dataState == EntityStateEnum.Deleted) { this.EntityState = dataState; } if (this.EntityState == EntityStateEnum.Unchanged) { this.EntityState = dataState; } } } } Here is my the code for the double-click event: private void customersDataGridView_CellDoubleClick(object sender, DataGridViewCellEventArgs e) { Customer oCustomer = (Customer)customersBindingSource.CurrencyManager.List[customersBindingSource.CurrencyManager.Position]; CustomerForm oForm = new CustomerForm(); oForm.NewCustomer = oCustomer; oForm.ShowDialog(this); oForm.Dispose(); oForm = null; } Unfortunately, when this code runs, I receive an InvalidCastException error stating "Unable to cast object to type 'System.Data.DataRowView' to type 'SyncTest.Customer'". This error occurs on the very first line of that event: Customer oCustomer = (Customer)customersBindingSource.CurrencyManager.List[customersBindingSource.CurrencyManager.Position]; What am I doing wrong?... and what can I do to fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • Advice on learning programming languages and math.

    - by Joris Ooms
I feel like I'm getting stuck lately when it comes to learning about programming-related things; I thought I'd ask a question here and write it all down in the hope to get some pointers/advice from people. Perhaps writing it down helps me put things in perspective for myself aswell. I study Interactive Multimedia Design. This course is based on two things: graphic design on one hand, and web development on the other hand. I have quite a decent knowledge of web-related languages (the usual HTML/JS/PHP) and I'll be getting a course on ASP.NET next year. In my free time, I have learnt how to work with CodeIgniter, aswell as some diving into Ruby (and Rails) and basic iOS programming. In my first year of college I also did a class on Java (19/20 on the end result). This grade doesn't really mean anything though; I have the basics of OOP down but Java-wise, we learnt next to nothing. Considering the time I have been programming in, for example, PHP.. I can't say I'm bad at it. I'm definitely not good or great at it, but I'm decent. My teachers tell me I have the programming thing down. They just tell me I should keep on learning. So that's what I do, and I try to take in as much as possible; however, sometimes I'm unsure where to start and I have this tendency to always doubt myself. Now, for the 'question'. I want to get into iOS programming. I know iOS programming boils down to programming in Cocoa Touch and Objective-C. I also know Obj-C is a superset of C. I have done a class on C a couple of years ago, but I failed miserably. I got stuck at pointers and never really understood them.. Until like a month ago. I suddenly 'got' it. I have been working through a book on Objective-C for a week or so now, and I understand the basics (I'm at like.. chapter 6 or so). However, I keep running into similar problems as the ones I had when I did the C class: I suck at math. No, really. I come from a Latin-Modern Languages background in high school and I had nearly no math classes back then. I wanted to study Computer Science, but I failed there because of the miserable state of my mathematics knowledge. I can't explain why I'm suddenly talking about math here though, because it isn't directly related to programming.. yet it is. For example, the examples in the book I'm reading now are about programming a fraction-calculator. All good, I can do the programming when I get the formulas down.. but it takes me a full day or more to actually get to that point. I also find it hard to come up with ideas for myself. I made one small iOS app the other day and it's just a button / label kind of thing. When I press the button, it generates a random number. That's really all I could come up with. Can you 'learn' that? It probably comes down to creativity, but evidently, I'm not too great at being creative. Are there any sites or resources out there that provide something like a basic list of things you can program when you're just starting out? Maybe I'm focusing on too many things at once. I want to keep my HTML/CSS at a decent level, while learning PHP and CodeIgniter, while diving into Ruby on Rails and learning Objective-C and the iOS SDK at the same time. I just want to be good at something, I guess. The problem is that I can't seem to be happy with my PHP stuff. I want more, something 'harder'; that's why I decided to pick up the iOS thing. Like I said, I have the basics down of a lot of different languages. I can program something simple in Java, in C, in Objective-C as of this week.. but it ends there. Mostly because I can't come up with ideas for more complex applications, and also because I just doubt myself: 'Oh, that's too complex, I can never do that'. And then it ends there. To conclude my rant, let me basically rephrase my questions into a 'tl;dr' part. A. I want to get into iOS programming and I have basic knowledge of C/Objective-C. However, I struggle to come up with ideas of my own and implement them and I also suck at math which is something that isn't directly related to, yet often needed while programming. What can I do? B. I have an interest in a lot of different programming languages and I can't stop reading/learning. However, I don't feel like I'm good in anything. Should I perhaps focus on just one language for a year or longer, or keep taking it all in at the same time and hope I'll finally get them all down? C. Are there any resources out there that provide basic ideas of things I can program? I'm thinking about 'simple' command-line applications here to help me while studying C/Obj-C away from the whole iPhone SDK. Like I said, the examples in my book are mainly math-based (fraction calculator) and it's kinda hard. :( Thanks a lot for reading my post. I didn't plan it to be this long but oh well. Thanks in advance for any answers.

  • How do one improve him/her problem-solving ability ?

    - by gcc
How can one improve him/her problem-solving ability? Every one says same thing "a real programmer knows how to handle real problem", but they forget how they learn this ability, or where (I know in school, no one gives us any ability, of course in my opinion). If you have any idea except above ones, feel free when you give your advice solve more problems do more exercises, write code, search google then write more ... For me, my question is like "Use complex/known library instead of using your own." In other words,t I want your presonal experience, book recommendation, web page on problem solving. • StreamInsight/SSIS Integration White Paper

    - by Roman Schindlauer
This has been tweeted all over the place, but we still want to give it proper attention here in our blog: SSIS (SQL Server Integration Service) is widely used by today’s customers to transform data from different sources and load into a SQL Server data warehouse or other targets. StreamInsight can process large amount of real-time as well as historical data, making it easy to do temporal and incremental processing.  We have put together a white paper to discuss how to bring StreamInsight and SSIS together and leverage both platforms to get crucial insights faster and easier. From the paper’s abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide guidance for enriching data integration scenarios by integrating StreamInsight with SQL Server Integration Services. Specifically, we looked at the technical challenges and solutions for such integration, by using a case study based on a customer scenarios in the telecommunications sector. Please take a look at this paper and send us your feedback! Using SQL Server Integration Services and StreamInsight Together Regards, Ping Wang

  • MkMapView setRegion animation prevents touch events on Annotation Views

    - by Vlad Gurovich
Hi there! We have a MKmapView with a bunch of Image Annotation where each Image annotation responds to touch by overriding these methods of AnnotationView subclass: -(void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event; -(void) touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event Our map region is updated using [MkMapView setRegion:animated:] whenever the new location is received and is far enough from the old location to make a difference. What I noticed is that if we set animated flag to YES the touches on our annotation are rarely detected(probably due to the fact that main thread is busy animating between two map regions. When we set animated flag to NO, everything is fine, but map transition may(or may not) become jerky. The question I have is whether this is an expected behavior of animated flag of [MkMapView setRegion:animated] function or whether there is a workaround for this issue. Thanks in advance

  • OWB 11gR2: Migration and Upgrade Paths from Previous Versions

    - by antonio romero
Over the next several months, we expect widespread adoption of OWB 11gR2, both for its new features and because it is the only release of Warehouse Builder certified for use with database 11gR2. Customers seeking to move existing environments to OWB 11gR2 should review the new whitepaper, OWB 11.2: Upgrade and Migration Paths. This whitepaper covers the following topics: The difference between upgrade and migration, and how to choose between them An outline of how to perform each process When and where intermediate upgrade steps are required Tips for upgrading an existing environment to 11gR2 without having to regenerate and redeploy code to your production environment. Moving up from 10gR2 and 11gR1 is generally straightforward. For customers still using OWB 9 or 10.1, it is generally possible to move an entire environment forward complete with design and runtime audit metadata, but the upgrade process can be complex and may require intermediate processing using OWB 10.2 or OWB 11.1. Moving a design by itself is much simpler, though it requires regeneration and redeployment. Relevant details are provided in the whitepaper, so if you are planning an upgrade at some point soon, definitely start there.

  • Can NSDictionary be used with TableView on iPhone?

    - by bobo
In a UITableViewController subclass, there are some methods that need to be implemented in order to load the data and handle the row selection event: - (NSInteger)numberOfSectionsInTableView:(UITableView *)tableView { return 1; //there is only one section needed for my table view } - (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section { return [myList count]; //myList is a NSDictionary already populated in viewDidLoad method } - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease ]; } // indexPath.row returns an integer index, // but myList uses keys that are not integer, // I don't know how I can retrieve the value and assign it to the cell.textLabel.text return cell; } - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { // Handle row on select event, // but indexPath.row only returns the index, // not a key of the myList NSDictionary, // this prevents me from knowing which row is selected } How is NSDictionary supposed to work with TableView? What is the simplest way to get this done?

Something like: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession)] public class MyService : IMyService { public event EventHandler ClientRegistered; public event EventHandler FileUploaded; } and from my host application to be able to do: ServiceHost svc = new ServiceHost(typeof(MyService)); svc.Open(); // something like: svc.NewSession += new EventHandler(...) //... public void SessionHandler(InstanceContext SessionContext) { MySessionHandler NewSessionHandler = new MySessionHandler(SessionContext); // From MySessionHandler I handle the service's events (FileUploaded, ClientRegistered) // for this session and notify the UI of any changes. • What is meant by "Repeat Business" ?

    - by vinoth
Repeat Business obviously happens because the company has a great product or a great service. In the software industry, do companies make the code base complex enough so that the maintenance comes back to them? I have heard of cases where companies say "ya this code base has minor errors, let's ship them anyway, and let the customers come back for another change request on these". Then they would sometimes charge the customer for that. This question is specific to the software services industry. Do these things happen in the real world? I am trying to understand the business process.

  • How do I do TDD on embedded devices?

    - by Darth
I'm not new to programming and I've even worked with some low level C and ASM on AVR, but I really can't get my head around a larger-scale embedded C project. Being degenerated by the Ruby's philosophy of TDD/BDD, I'm unable to understand how people write and test code like this. I'm not saying it's a bad code, I just don't understand how this can work. I wanted to get more into some low level programming, but I really have no idea how to approach this, since it looks like a completely different mindset that I'm used to. I don't have trouble understanding pointer arithmetics, or how allocating memory works, but when I see how complex C/C++ code looks compared to Ruby, it just seems impossibly hard. Since I already ordered myself an Arduino board, I'd love to get more into some low level C and really understand how to do things properly, but it seems like none of the rules of high level languages apply. Is it even possible to do TDD on embedded devices or when developing drivers or things like custom bootloader, etc.?

  • Best Fit Scheduling Algorithm

    - by Teegijee
I'm writing a scheduling program with a difficult programming problem. There are several events, each with multiple meeting times. I need to find an arrangement of meeting times such that each schedule contains any given event exactly once, using one of each event's multiple meeting times. Obviously I could use brute force, but that's rarely the best solution. I'm guessing this is a relatively basic computer science problem, which I'll learn about once I am able to start taking computer science classes. In the meantime, I'd prefer any links where I could read up on this, or even just a name I could Google.

  • WPF Application Hang

    - by Karim
Hi, I'm using Windows 7 Professional (x64) and having installed .NET 4.0 RTM on my machine. Since 2 days I'm noticing that every WPF application that I'm trying to run hangs and becomes non responsive (a not responding text is appended to it's title bar) and it's painted white. There is no info regarding any exception, no error message. Nothing. Even the Event Log shows that there was "application hang" event (code 1002) and nothing more. This problem is for everything that is written in WPF, even for products like NHibernate Profiler and other stuff that I was using on a regular basis without any issues. Tried to reinstall .NET 4.0 and nothing changed. Any ideas why this might be happening?

  • how to localize a table with multiple text entries?

    - by rap-uvic
Hello, I'm writing a web app which will allow creation of events. An event can have a title as well as a description amongst other things. The app needs to be multilingual. So I have 4 tables for localization: ResourceTypes, ResourceKeys, Resources, and Locales. A resource key can have multiple values in Resources table for different locales. So Resources is a many to many table between ResourceKeys and Locales. So in the event table I want to have a resourceKey for its title as well as a resourceKey for its description. So my question is, is it OK from database-design perspective to have two foreign keys from a table into another table? Has anybody used a better approach in such a scenario?

  • Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Researcher

    - by Yolande
In a new interview titled “Gilda Garretón, a Java Developer and Parallelism Computing Research,” Garretón shares her first-hand experience developing with Java and Java 7 for very large-scale integration (VLSI) of computer-aided design (CAD). Garretón gives an insightful overview of how Java is contributing to the parallelism development and to the Electric VLSI Design Systems, an open source VLSI CAD application used as a research platform for new CAD algorithms as well as the research flow for hardware test chips.  Garretón considers that parallelism programming is hard and complex, yet important developments are taking place.  "With the addition of the concurrent package in Java SE 6 and the Fork/Join feature in Java SE 7, developers have a chance to rely more on existing frameworks and dedicate more time to the essence of their parallel algorithms." • Demystified - BI in SharePoint 2010

    - by Sahil Malik
Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Frequently, my clients ask me if there is a good guide on deciphering the seemingly daunting choice of products from Microsoft when it comes to business intelligence offerings in a SharePoint 2010 world. These are all described in detail in my book, but here is a one (well maybe two) page executive overview. Microsoft Excel: Yes, Microsoft Excel! Your favorite and most commonly used in the world database. No it isn’t a database in technical pure definitions, but this is the most commonly used ‘database’ in the world. You will find many business users craft up very compelling excel sheets with tonnes of logic inside them. Good for: Quick Ad-Hoc reports. Excel 64 bit allows the possibility of very large datasheets (Also see 32 bit vs 64 bit Office, and PowerPivot Add-In below). Audience: End business user can build such solutions. Related technologies: PowerPivot, Excel Services Microsoft Excel with PowerPivot Add-In: The powerpivot add-in is an extension to Excel that adds support for large-scale data. Think of this as Excel with the ability to deal with very large amounts of data. It has an in-memory data store as an option for Analysis services. Good for: Ad-hoc reporting and logic with very large amounts of data. Audience: End business user can build such solutions. Related technologies: Excel, and Excel Services Excel Services: Excel Services is a Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 shared service that brings the power of Excel to SharePoint Server by providing server-side calculation and browser-based rendering of Excel workbooks. Thus, excel sheets can be created by end users, and published to SharePoint server – which are then rendered right through the browser in read-only or parameterized-read-only modes. They can also be accessed by other software via SOAP or REST based APIs. Good for: Sharing excel sheets with a larger number of people, while maintaining control/version control etc. Sharing logic embedded in excel sheets with other software across the organization via REST/SOAP interfaces Audience: End business users can build such solutions once your tech staff has setup excel services on a SharePoint server instance. Programmers can write software consuming functionality/complex formulae contained in your sheets. Related technologies: PerformancePoint Services, Excel, and PowerPivot. Visio Services: Visio Services is a shared service on the Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 platform that allows users to share and view Visio diagrams that may or may not have data connected to them. Connected data can update these diagrams allowing a visual/graphical view into the data. The diagrams are viewable through the browser. They are rendered in silverlight, but will automatically down-convert to .png formats. Good for: Showing data as diagrams, live updating. Comes with a developer story. Audience: End business users can build such solutions once your tech staff has setup visio services on a SharePoint server instance. Developers can enhance the visualizations Related Technologies: Visio Services can be used to render workflow visualizations in SP2010 Reporting Services: SQL Server reporting services can integrate with SharePoint, allowing you to store reports and data sources in SharePoint document libraries, and render these reports and associated functionality such as subscriptions through a SharePoint site. In SharePoint 2010, you can also write reports against SharePoint lists (access services uses this technique). Good for: Showing complex reports running in a industry standard data store, such as SQL server. Audience: This is definitely developer land. Don’t expect end users to craft up reports, unless a report model has previously been published. Related Technologies: PerformancePoint Services PerformancePoint Services: PerformancePoint Services in SharePoint 2010 is now fully integrated with SharePoint, and comes with features that can either be used in the BI center site definition, or on their own as activated features in existing site collections. PerformancePoint services allows you to build reports and dashboards that target a variety of back-end datasources including: SQL Server reporting services, SQL Server analysis services, SharePoint lists, excel services, simple tables, etc. Using these you have the ability to create dashboards, scorecards/kpis, and simple reports. You can also create reports targeting hierarchical multidimensional data sources. The visual decomposition tree is a new report type that lets you quickly breakdown multi-dimensional data. Good for: Mostly everything :), except your wallet – it’s not free! But this is the most comprehensive offering. If you have SharePoint server, forget everything and go with performance point. Audience: Developers need to setup the back-end sources, manageability story. DBAs need to setup datawarehouses with cubes. Moderately sophisticated business users, or developers can craft up reports using dashboard designer which is a click-once App that deploys with PerformancePoint Related Technologies: Excel services, reporting services, etc.   Other relevant technologies to know about: Business Connectivity Services: Allows for consumption of external data in SharePoint as columns or external lists. This can be paired with one or more of the above BI offerings allowing insight into such data. Access Services: Allows the representation/publishing of an access database as a SharePoint 2010 site, leveraging many SharePoint features. Reporting services is used by Access services. Secure Store Service: The SP2010 Secure store service is a replacement for the SP2007 single sign on feature. This acts as a credential policeman providing credentials to various applications running with SharePoint.
