• Quantifying the effects of partition mis-alignment

  I'm experiencing some significant performance issues on an NFS server. I've been reading up a bit on partition alignment, and I think I have my partitions mis-aligned. I can't find anything that tells me how to actually quantify the effects of mis-aligned partitions. Some of the general information I found suggests the performance penalty can be quite high (upwards of 60%) and others say it's negligible. What I want to do is determine if partition alignment is a factor in this server's performance problems or not; and if so, to what degree? So I'll put my info out here, and hopefully the community can confirm if my partitions are indeed mis-aligned, and if so, help me put a number to what the performance cost is. Server is a Dell R510 with dual E5620 CPUs and 8 GB RAM. There are eight 15k 2.5” 600 GB drives (Seagate ST3600057SS) configured in hardware RAID-6 with a single hot spare. RAID controller is a Dell PERC H700 w/512MB cache (Linux sees this as a LSI MegaSAS 9260). OS is CentOS 5.6, home directory partition is ext3, with options “rw,data=journal,usrquota”. • MegaCLI always returns blank output

  This server is a Dell R200 running Ubuntu 8.04LTS using a LSI SAS1068E raid card supplied from Dell, I suspect that there might be some kind of RAID issue with the hardware raid built into the motherboard, but I can't seem to get MegaCLi to return any useful output: root@81 $ ./MegaCli -AdpAllInfo -aALL root@81 $ ./MegaCli -PDList -aALL root@81 $ The disks work and AFAIK the raid software is installed correctly. I've seen this issue on RedHat issues also in the past. The RAID was initially setup through the BIOS on this server and appears to be functioning fine apart from this.

• Device manager has no catagory for "ports-com & lpt"

  My dell Inspiron laptop modem is not working. The Dell modem helper says that it is already in use and has a port confilct. When i go to the device manager there is not even a catagory listed for "ports". Under the modem properties is says that it connected to com 3.

• How to set up dual quadro cards on RHEL 5.5?

  I have a RHEL 5 workstation with 2 nvidia Quadro FX4500 cards, with one display attached to each card. After doing a clean install of RHEL 5.5, the second display doesnt work (it worked ok in RHEL 5.2). Neither separate X screens nor Xinerama are working. The kernel version is 2.6.18-194.el5 I've tried nvidia drivers 185.18.36 (the ones that i was using on 5.2) and the latest 260.19.36 and neither works. • WinXP: File Record Segment nnnn is unreadable?

  I'm pretty sure that the drive is toast, except for the fact that this error is only showing up on one partition (it's out of a Dell computer, and has a couple of Dell partitions, which boot and work fine.) I've already purchased another hard drive, and re-installed WinXP, but when I re-connect this drive and reboot, I'm getting thousands of these errors. Is there any chance of recovering any files off this? Should I prevent XP from trying to resolve the problems?

• BizTalk 2009 - Pipeline Component Wizard

  Recently I decided to try out the BizTalk Server Pipeline Component Wizard when creating a new pipeline component for BizTalk 2009. There are different versions of the wizard available, so be sure to download the appropriate version for the BizTalk environment that you are working with. Following the download and expansion of the zip file, you should be left with a Visual Studio solution.  Open this solution and build the project. Following this installation is straight foward - locate and run the built setup.exe file in the PipelineComponentWizard Setup project and click through the small number of installation screens. Once you have completed installation you will be ready to use the wizard in Visual Studio to create your BizTalk Pipeline Component. Start by creating a new project, selecting BizTalk Projects then BizTalk Server Pipeline Component.  You will then be presented with the splash screen. The next step is General Setup, where you will detail the classname, namespace, pipeline and component types, and the implementation language for your Pipeline Component. The options for pipeline type are Receive, Send or Any. Depending on the pipeline type chosen there are different options presented for the component type, matching those available within the BizTalk Pipelines themselves: Receive - Decoder, Disassembling Parser, Validate, Party Resolver, Any. • Where to get laptop replacement parts?

  I am sure some of us have older laptops that still works but just one or two parts started not working very well. However, to send it back to the manufacturer for repair might not be worth the money (as some of them even charge consultation fees just to have it checked) as these old laptops are most probably well beyond warranty. Replacing these one or two parts could give your laptop a new lease of life. For example, I have a Dell Inspiron 640m which the fan recently failed. Everything else still works. I know enough to open up the laptop (after reading the service manual) and put it back together again, hence a replacement fan could save it. However, finding these parts turned out to be difficult. I guess I wouldn't be able to get it from Dell since I have been searching around the Dell forums and concluded if I were going to get Dell to at least talk to me, I would have to pay some money (since my warranty expired). In addition, if there's a problem, it would be difficult because I probably would have to mail the parts back (costing more money). One of my friend spilled water on her Macbook, she sent it back to Apple and they told her the cost of repairing it exceeds that of buying a new Macbook. They probably have to change everything except the LCD screen. I opened it up and found that most of the parts are still working, only the RAM had fried. Replaced it and it's working again. For some time before discovering only the RAM fried, I was toying with the idea of replacing the logic board myself but looks like I didn't have to. =) Now I know there's a site for Macbooks used replacement parts:- http://www.ifixit.com/ The question is, does anyone know where to get replacement parts at their own locality? It might benefit the community as a whole. Someone might know a local computer store that sells precisely just the things we needed (for now, I hope to find a shop that sells just the fan). If you own a laptop which you had an easy experience finding the replacement parts, do post that as well. PS: I wish laptop manufacturers have outlets where they sell these replacement parts (or at least let you place an order).

When I restart Xorg everything is fine again and the problem doesn't occur until next reboot. I tried to upgrade the kernel from stock 2.6.32 to 2.6.39 from unstable repository but that didn't help. Booting with irqpoll option only seems to prolong the initial time period after which the problem occurs. I'm using latest NVIDIA drivers and Realtek firmware from firmware-realtek package. I have two GTX 560Ti that run in SLI. Disabling SLI or taking out one card completely doesn't solve the problem either. I've installed Windows 7 RTM (x64) I have this audio device: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio I have tried using the windows 7 basic driver, and also the Vista 64-bit driver from Dell's website (details): Date: 10/29/2007 Version: 6.10.0.5511, A04 File Size: 7 MB With both drivers, I get normal stereo sound from the driver, but my 5.1 surround sound doesn't work. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix?

I guess I wouldn't be able to get it from Dell since I have been searching around the Dell forums and concluded if I were going to get Dell to at least talk to me, I would have to pay some money (since my warranty expired). In addition, if there's a problem, it would be difficult because I probably would have to mail the parts back (costing more money). One of my friend spilled water on her Macbook, she sent it back to Apple and they told her the cost of repairing it exceeds that of buying a new Macbook. They probably have to change everything except the LCD screen. I opened it up and found that most of the parts are still working, only the RAM had fried. Replaced it and it's working again. For some time before discovering only the RAM fried, I was toying with the idea of replacing the logic board myself but looks like I didn't have to. =) Now I know there's a site for Macbooks used replacement parts:- http://www.ifixit.com/ The question is, does anyone know where to get replacement parts at their own locality? It might benefit the community as a whole. Someone might know a local computer store that sells precisely just the things we needed (for now, I hope to find a shop that sells just the fan). If you own a laptop which you had an easy experience finding the replacement parts, do post that as well. PS: I wish laptop manufacturers have outlets where they sell these replacement parts (or at least let you place an order).

Currently I'm using Excel to map out all of the slots columns for the data but I suspect that there is some better method of doing this. Suggestions? Edit: Dell has an online tool, but doesn't seem very good at actually saving the data that you're working on (and obviously it's geared towards Dell hardware).

If I try to add a new local printer, it says : Only use this option if you don't have an USP printer ( Windows automatically installs USB printer). • Trying to configure HWIC-3G-HSPA

  I'm trying to configure a couple of Cisco 1941 routes. The are both identical routers. Each as a HWIC-1T (Smart Serial interface) and a HWIC-3G-HSPA 3G interface. These routers are to be sent to remote sites. We have connectivity to one of the sites but if remote site A gors down we lose connectivity to remote site B. The HWIC-1T is the primary WAN interface using frame relay joining the two remote sites We want the HWIC-3G-HSPA to be usable for direct connectivity from head office to remote site B, and also the HWIC-3G-HSPA is do be used for comms between the remote sites when the frame relay is down (happens quite a bit). I initialy tried to do dynamic routing using EIGRP however in my lab setup of laptop - 1941 - 1941 - laptop, I was unable to get end to end connectivity. I later settled on static routing and have got end to end connectivity but only over frame relay, not the HWIC-3G-HSPA. I've tried using kron to ping the local HWIC-3G-HSPA interface (cellular 0/1/0) every minute but that hasn't been successful. Manually pinging the IP assigned (by the telco) to ce0/1/0 does bring the interface up. Any ideas? Thanks

• My external keyboard and mouse do not work until I unlock my computer

  In Windows 7, when my laptop comes back from standby, my external mouse and keyboard cannot be used to "login" or "unlock" my station. Once I'm logged in again, they are recognized and work properly. Is this a security feature that I can turn off? Update: My laptop is a Dell XPS-1330M, and the keyboard is made by Dell. The mouse is a simple Microsoft mouse.
