• Where to find a mentor?

  I have been looking around for resources that discuss about mentors, including questions in the stackexchange network. I see that the general response has been to join open source projects and/or check out local user groups if there exists any. Are we sure that joining open source project can get me a mentor? It can grab eyeballs, yes, if the project is exciting enough but a mentor? I am not so sure. What do you guys think? Finally, I'd want my mentor to be in a specific domain as opposed to just being a coding wizard and that makes the search even more difficult. Suggestions?

  i'm making my 1st game. i'm using javascript as i currently want to learn to make games without needing to learn another language but this is more of a general game dev question its a 2d turn-based tile/grid game. you can check it here http://www.patinterotest.tk/ it creates a movable area when you hover a player and it implements the A* algo for moving the player. The Problem: i want to make the 'dynamic movable area creation' already implement a limited number of steps for a player. The Questions: what is a good way to do this? is there another algorithm to use for this? the A* algorithm needs a start and destination, with what i want to do i don't have a destination or should i just limit the iteration of the A* algo to the steps variable? hopefully you understand the problem & questions easily

• What is a good use case for scala?

  In a current project we have setup the build so that we could mix Java and Scala. I would like to use more Scala in our code base to make the code more readable and concise. In the process also learn the language by handing over real features. So I plan to use Scala for some classes to showcase its benefits and convince other devs to look into using Scala too. For a rest based web server or a program in general what kind of code structures lend themselves to Scala's functional programming style.

• Which tools you use to make gtk themes?

  I'm trying to make a new gtk theme using the murrine engine, using Humanity (default in ubuntu 9.10) as a template. You can grab the code in http://github.com/tutuca/themes However, I found cumbersome the process of creating a new theme with it. There is no central starting point. The documentation of both, the engine options (gtkrc's and stuff), and general theming practices (the format of the index.theme files, folders, bla bla) is scarce, How to's and tutorials are often old or subject to lots of opinionated debate and results confusing (to me, having a web developer background, at least :-). So... I wanted to ask to the fellows gtk themers and artist out there: Which tools you use to create a new theme, and how does your average workflow looks like?

Mostly I am using percent for that but sometimes I need a specific area. for example, 300px div element. Which screen resolution should I target for modern mobile phones in general? I know it varies but what is the higher number. Most of my concerns are iPhone, Windows Phone and Android.

• What collision detection approach for top down car game?

  I have a quite advanced top down car game and i use masks to detect collisions. I have the actual designed track (what the player see) with fancy graphics etc. and two other pictures i use as mask for my detection collisions. Each mask has only two colors, white and black and i check each frame if a pixel of the car collide with a black pixel of the masks. This approach works of course but it's not really flexible. Whenever i want to change the look of a track, i have to redraw the mask and it's a real pain. What is the general approach for this kind of game? How can i improve the flexibility of such a mask based approach?

  I've been a PHP web developer for about 2 and a half years now. I have started using CodeIgniter framework to shorten development process a while ago. I developed 4 websites using CodeIgniter. It has been really tiring and boring due to code-repetition. Code repetition was vast on form handling functions in controllers.So in my last project , i developed a general form input handling function.This lead a realisation that it could get even faster by more automation. What i think i lack in my development is using CRUD & Code Generation tools. But i am wondering if there is any other utilities that shortens development process. Let me know which one of the following is your favorite article from memory lane. 2006 Auto Generate Script to Delete Deprecated Fields in Current Database In early career everytime I have to drop a column, I had hard time doing it because I was scared what if that column was needed somewhere in the code. Due to this fear I never dropped any column. I just renamed the column. If the column which I renamed was needed afterwards it was very easy to rename it back again. However, it is not recommended to keep the deleted column renamed in the database. At every interval I used to drop the columns which was prefixed with specific word. This script is 6 years old but still works. Give it a look, I am open for improvements. 2007 Shrinking Truncate Log File – Log Full – Part 2 Shrinking database or mdf file is indeed bad thing and it creates lots of problems. However, once in a while there is legit requirement to shrink the log file – a very rare one. In the rare occasion shrinking or truncating the log file may be the only solution. However, one should make sure to take backup before and after the truncate or shrink as in case of a disaster they can be very useful. Remember that truncating log file will break the log chain and while restore it can create major issue. Anyway, use this feature with caution. 2008 Simple Use of Cursor to Print All Stored Procedures of Database Including Schema This is a very interesting requirement I used to face in my early career days, I needed to print all the Stored procedures of my database. Interesting enough I had written a cursor to do so. Today when I look back at this stored procedure, I believe there will be a much cleaner way to do the same task, however, I still use this SP quite often when I have to document all the stored procedures of my database. Interesting Observation about Order of Resultset without ORDER BY In industry many developers avoid using ORDER BY clause to display the result in particular order thinking that Index is enforcing the order. In this interesting example, I demonstrate that without using ORDER BY, same table and similar query can return different results. Query optimizer always returns results using any method which is optimized for performance. The learning is There is no order unless ORDER BY is used. 2009 Size of Index Table – A Puzzle to Find Index Size for Each Index on Table I asked this puzzle earlier where I asked how to find the Index size for each of the tables. The puzzle was very well received and lots of interesting answers were received. To answer this question I have written following blog posts. I suggest this weekend you try to solve this problem and see if you can come up with a better solution. If not, well here are the solutions. Solution 1 | Solution 2 | Solution 3 Understanding Table Hints with Examples Hints are options and strong suggestions specified for enforcement by the SQL Server query processor on DML statements. The hints override any execution plan the query optimizer might select for a query. The SQL Server Query optimizer is a very smart tool and it makes a better selection of execution plan. Suggesting hints to the Query Optimizer should be attempted when absolutely necessary and by experienced developers who know exactly what they are doing (or in development as a way to experiment and learn). Interesting Observation – TOP 100 PERCENT and ORDER BY I have seen developers and DBAs using TOP very causally when they have to use the ORDER BY clause. Theoretically, there is no need of ORDER BY in the view at all. All the ordering should be done outside the view and view should just have the SELECT statement in it. It was quite common that to save this extra typing by including ordering inside of the view. At several instances developers want a complete resultset and for the same they include TOP 100 PERCENT along with ORDER BY, assuming that this will simulate the SELECT statement with ORDER BY. 2010 SQLPASS Nov 8-11, 2010-Seattle – An Alternative Look at Experience In year 2010 I attended most prestigious SQL Server event SQLPASS between Nov 8-11, 2010 at Seattle. I have only one expression for the event - Best Summit Ever. Instead of writing about my usual routine or the event, I wrote about the interesting things I did and how I felt about it! When I go back and read it, I feel that this is the best event I attended in year 2010. Change Database Access to Single User Mode Using SSMS Image says all. 2011 SQL Server 2012 has introduced new analytic functions. These functions were long awaited and I am glad that they are now here. Before when any of this function was needed, people used to write long T-SQL code to simulate these functions. But now there’s no need of doing so. Having available native function also helps performance as well readability. • How to use Btrfs with compression on external USB hard drive?

  I would like to make use of Btrfs' transparent compression on an external drive. Which tool is best for formatting the drive? Disk Utility or GParted? How do I activate the compression? During formatting or when I mount the drive? I guess at mount time. I'm using usbmount to automatically mount newly attached devices, because nobody is logged in on the desktop. Would I have to set general default options somewhere in a system configuration file to get Btrfs mounted with compression, or would I specify this via FS_MOUNTOPTIONS in /etc/usbmount/usbmount.conf and how? Thanks!

• How did craigspro license Craigslist content? [closed]

  There's an app called craigspro that provides a much better interface to Craigslist on mobile devices. They claim that the app is Officially Licensed by Craigslist, but I thought Craigslist never licensed their content, and the only thing I can find on the subject in the terms of use is this: Any copying, aggregation, display, distribution, performance or derivative use of craigslist or any content posted on craigslist whether done directly or through intermediaries (including but not limited to by means of spiders, robots, crawlers, scrapers, framing, iframes or RSS feeds) is prohibited. As a limited exception, general purpose Internet search engines and noncommercial public archives will be entitled to access craigslist without individual written agreements executed with CL that specifically authorize an exception to this prohibition if ... Does anyone know how do get a "written agreement" with Craigslist, and roughly what their terms would be? Do they charge a fee, or just check that you're not evil? I'll try next with Craigslist directly, but I'd like to get a sense of the landscape before stumbling in.

• How to get working cups command line tools on Server 14.04

  It looks like some of the commands like lpr and lprm have broken versions that don't work with cups. These commands worked properly on 10.04. lpr for cups has an -o option, but no lpr is intalled when cups is installed, and the lpr installed with apt-get install lpr does not have the -o option and does not appear to be the cups version of lpr. man lpr shows BSD General Commands Manual at the top, where man lpr on the Ubuntu 10.04 server said Apple, inc in the same spot. which leads me to believe the "wrong" lpr is in the "lpr" package or package names got moved around. There is also a lprng package, but trying to install it wants to remove cups and cups-client. lprm also returns lprm: PrinterName: unknown printer when PrinterName is in fact a valid printer installed with cups and does appear in lpstat -t. How do I get the proper cups versions of lpr working on Server 14.04?

• Colorize with a given color a texture

  I have a texture and I want to "colorize" it with a given color, lets say cyan (#00ffff) or purple (#800080). What I want to do, is get all the pixel values from the texture, and remove the color and keep the "brightness" and "saturation" and apply to the desired color. There is a tool in GIMP to do this called Colorize (Colors -> Colorize.. while editing), I made an example below. This is will all be done in a shader (GLSL), although this is probably a general algorithm.

• Why is implementing copy-paste in a touch screen based smartphone such a big deal?

  I'm not entirely sure this is on-topic, but it definitely needs a programmer's understanding to be answered, and deals with general development (for a specific scenario) as opposed to a specific piece of code. In a way it also translates into "what are the challenges in doing X in a touch screen app", and similar questions have been asked here in the past. So here it is: When Apple didn't implement copy-pasting on the iPhone since version 1 I just assumed it was a UI issue- they were waiting until they figured out a good UI for it. But now the idea is out there, and Microsoft still released Windows Phone 7 without copy-pasting, promising it'll be ready in a few months. My question is: why does this takes a few months to implement? Are there some technological challenges that are unique to programming for a touch screen that I'm not familiar with?

• Migrating from GlassFish 2.x to 3.1.x

  With clustering now available in GlassFish since version 3.1 (our Spring 2011 release), a good number of folks have been looking at migrating their existing GlassFish 2.x-based clustered environments to a more recent version to take advantage of Java EE 6, our modular design, improved SSH-based provisioning and enhanced HA performance. The GlassFish documentation set is quite extensive and has a dedicated Upgrade Guide. It obviously lists a number of small changes such as file layout on disk (mostly due to modularity), some option changes (grizzly, shoal), the removal of node agents (using SSH instead), new JPA default provider name, etc... There is even a migration tool (glassfish/bin/asupgrade) to upgrade existing domains. But really the only thing you need to know is that each module in GlassFish 3 and beyond is responsible for doing its part of the upgrade job which means that the migration is as simple as copying a 2.x domain directory to the domains/ directory and starting the server with asadmin start-domain --upgrade. Binary-compatible products eligible for such upgrades include Sun Java System Application Server 9.1 Update 2 as well as version 2.1 and 2.1.1 of Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server.

• How to explain OOP concepts to a non technical person?

  I often try to avoid telling people I'm a programmer because most of the time I end up explaining to them what that really means. When I tell them I'm programming in Java they often ask general questions about the language and how it differs from x and y. I'm also not good at explaining things because 1) I don't have that much experience in the field and 2) I really hate explaining things to non-technical people. They say that you truly understand things once you explain them to someone else, in this case how would you explain OOP terminology and concepts to a non technical person?

• Can static and dynamically typed languages be seen as different tools for different types of jobs?

  Yes, similar questions have been asked but always with the aim of finding out 'which one is better.' I'm asking because I came up as a dev primarily in JavaScript and don't really have any extensive experience writing in statically typed languages. In spite of this I definitely see value in learning C for handling demanding operations at lower levels of code (which I assume has a lot to do with static vs dynamic at the compiler level), but what I'm trying to wrap my head around is whether there are specific project contexts (maybe certain types of dynamic data-intensive operations?) involving things other than performance where it makes a lot more sense to go with Java or C# vs. something like Python.

Correct your errors or, if you need Oracle Support’s assistance, attach the output to a service request for faster resolution by the support engineer. Oracle E-Business Suite Diagnostics are included in your Oracle Premier Support agreement at no extra charge. They are proactive, easy to use, tools provided by Oracle Support to ease the gathering and analyzing of information from your E-Business Suite, specific to an existing issue or setup. Formatted output displays the information gathered, the findings of the analysis, and the appropriate actions to take if necessary. These tools are designed for both the functional and technical user, providing no EBS administration features, so you can safely assign this responsibility to users who are not administrators. A good place to start with the Support Diagnostics is the install patch Note 167000.1. Everything you need is in this patch and you install it on top of your E-Business Suite. If you are on EBS 12.0.6 or below, Oracle delivers the diagnostic tests in a standard Oracle patch and you apply it using the adpatch utility. If you are on EBS release 12.1.1 or above, your diagnostics are already there. This allows you to check throughout the month to identify and resolve any issue that might prevent closing the period in the General Ledger on schedule.   Click the Select Application button. Select your Application. In this example, we will use the Period Close test. Scroll down to Period Close Place a check mark in the Period Closing box in the Select column. Click the Execute button at the bottom of the page Input the parameters. Click the Submit button Click the Refresh button, until the Status of the test changes from “In Progress” to “Completed” Click the icon under, View Report to view the test results   The report will complete successfully or show completed with errors. The report will show where the error is located, what the error is, and what action(s) to take for resolution. Remember, if you need to work with Oracle Support to resolve your issue, attach the report to your Service Request so the engineer can start working the issue. Oracle’s Period Close Diagnostic, and the other E-Business Suite Diagnostics, save you time and help keep you on schedule. If you run the Period Close Diagnostic throughout the month, you can identify issues to resolve and get help, if needed. When opening a Service Request, attaching the output from the diagnostic report, speeds resolution. With the issues resolved ahead of time, your Period Close should complete without errors.
