• Cloning a USB flash drive to another larger one, is it safe to do so?

  I used Acronis True Image Home 2010 to clone a Dane-Elec zLight 8Gb pen drive/USB flash drive to a PNY Attaché 16Gb USB flash drive. Now WinXP shows the drive in device manager as USB DISK 2.0 USB DEVICE but doesn't have it in My Computer/doesn't assign it a drive letter. What is it that has messed up the PNY Attaché and is there some way to repair it so that it can be used as a regular USB flash drive again? Is there a safe way to clone a USB flash drive to another larger one? How safe is it to backup and restore a USB flash drive to/from a drive-image?

• Samba issue with sharing directories on NTFS/FAT32

  I have some strange problems with Samba server. I am using samba Version 3.5.4 on Ubuntu 10.10. I have two Windows XP machines, one on VirtualBox on Ubuntu and another office laptop. Windows machine on VirtualBox has no issues in accessing the shared folders, but the laptop is not able to access all the shared content. The issue faced on laptop is the following. Shared folders on ext3 drives have no issues in accessing, but the contents shared on NTFS and FAT32 drives (mounted ones) are not accessible. When I try to open the shared folder, it asks for user name and password, but doesn't accept when I provide it. (Even if I provide admin login details). I changed workgroup value to the domain_name in office laptop, but still the problem persists. • FTP error 425 failed to establish connection

  Getting "ftp error 425 failed to establish connection" when trying to connect to ftp server. Tried 2 ftp clients on 3 machines on same network and none work. However FTP works from home / mobile broadband. No ip blocks on ftp sever. Other ftp servers(differrent ip/hosts) work okay. firewall setup correct, no ports blocked. Is it possible to use a proxy for ftp a i think it's something with the ISP but taking too long to fix?

• Port Forwarding for Remote Desktop

  I have two Mac notebooks at home, I have assigned them static private IPs. I have also set my router to a DynDNS address, which updates everytime my router gets a new public IP. I have enabled Screen Sharing on both notebooks. I can successfully goto my router webpage using the DynDNS address. I understand I need to port-forward to get Screen Sharing to work from outside. Lets assume, notebooks have private IP 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 I am kind of lost here, would appreciate some help (I need to be able remote desktop to both notebooks)

• P4 vs. i3/i5 *T in power consumption and performance [migrated]

  I am running an Intel P4 prescott with HT on my home server (linux file server on encrypted disks on software-RAID5 and virtualisation host for three further machines). The performance for this purpose is really okay. When the system is idle it consumes about 140W power. I am considering buying a new mainboard for an e.g. Intel i3-2100T or an Intel i5-2390T. Both are low power CPUs with a TDP about 40W. Has anyone experiences how much power a recent mainboard with one of these CPUs an 3-4 'green-energy' disks (6W each) consumes? Do I get underneath the 100W threshold? What's about the performance of these low power CPUs? Are they comparable to an Intel P4 with HT? regards, walter

• Windows 7 randomly installs an "Unknown Device"

  Rarely (several days to weeks between occurrences,) and seemingly at random, I get a balloon notification from Windows 7 (x64 SP1 Home Premium) that it is installing hardware for me. However, no new hardware has been installed or plugged in! When I click the balloon it doesn't give me any useful information: Looking in the event log, I find this entry: Event ID: 20001 Source: UserPnp Task Category: 7005 Message: Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\usb.inf_amd64_neutral_153b489118ee37b8\usb.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0000&PID_0000\6&3AF9A177&0&0060&&02 with the following status: 0x0. It appears to be USB related. My motherboard has both USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers. My keyboard and mouse are plugged into the 2.0 slots and the data/recharge cable for a tablet (but not the tablet itself) was plugged in to the 3.0 slot. No other USB devices have been attached for several days/reboots. Why is Windows doing this?

• usb wifi dongle on ubuntu server, cannot install realtek driver RTL 8188cus

  I got cheap Ebay wifi dongle from HongKong, Im trying to set it up on my ubuntu server. Occasionally need to move server, so it cannot always be connected to router via lan. Anyhow, usb wifi came with a driver cd.   Hey, what are the usage scenarios for these kinds of virtual hosting ? Name Based - typical tomcat virtual hosting, one HOME instance with many contexts, each as an individual host IP based / port based - multiple instances of tomcat ( how is it with performance and memory consuption?) running on IP aliases (virtual IPs) for one network adapter, usually behind http apache server that can run name based virtual hostings. Otherwise I can't figure out how would I forward requests in iptables/firewall based on IP address, which is just one. How is IP based virtual hosting done as to Tomcat and multiple instances ? I'd like to hear some usage scenarios from your experience. How are you running your applications. Cause there are applications having it's own modified classloader and they are developed in a way to run alone withing a tomcat instance.   I've got a problem here : I have a C++ Library ("DataTsBroad") and a C++ Test app ("DataTsBroadTest"), to test it. Actually, the Lib and the Test app are both compiled an a Debian Lenny. Now, i want to continue to compile my Test app on a Debian Lenny (customer constraint), but i would compile my lib on a Squeeze or a Wheezy to work on the last Debian releases. So, i successfully compiled my Lib on a Squeeze, But, after, when i try to compile my Test app with this Lib on the Lenny, it fails ! • capistrano still asks for the 1st password even though I've set up an ssh key???

  Hi, Background: I've setup an ssh key to avoid having to use passwords with capistrano per http://www.picky-ricky.com/2009/01/ssh-keys-with-capistrano.html. A basic ssh to my server does work fine without asking for passwords. I'm using "dreamhost.com" for hosting. Issue - When I run 'cap deploy' I still get asked for the 1st password (even through the previous 2nd and 3rd password requests are now automated). It is the capistrano command that start with "git clone - q ssh:....." for which the password is being requested. Question - Is there something I've missed? How can I get "cap deploy" totally passwordless? Some excerts from config/deploy.rb are: set :use_sudo, false ssh_options[:keys] = [File.join(ENV["HOME"], ".ssh", "id_rsa")] default_run_options[:pty] = true thanks PS. • Media Player is missing from the list in "Turn Windows features on or off"

  I decided to reinstall Media Player in Vista [this way], so I figured I should turn it off as a Windows feature. But when I continue with the procedure, I get an incomplete list of features, here's an image: I looked around a bit, wondering if that is only an option available in 7, and I have seen people saying different things. So, is this only available for 7 or is there something wrong going on here? Can I make Media Player to show up in here? I am on a Toshiba Satellite A100 with Vista Home Premium OEM. I don't have my recovery disks or any restore point. Just to mention, I currently do have Media Player and it's working fine. Sorry if I can't think of any more details to add, please ask me for anything I should have included.

• Fedora vs Ubuntu vs Debian to host Subversion and Bugzilla over Apache

  I'm not interested in a flame war of Ubuntu vs Fedora vs Debian vs whatever. What I am interested in is whether or not I should move my current Ubuntu server to Fedora or Debian. I have been able to get Subversion setup and hosted via Apache over https and it works quite well (I'm a .NET guy so this was all new to me). I'm having trouble though with installing Bugszilla - have run into some issues getting all the perl scripts to run successfully so my questions are: 1) Will Bugszilla will install easier on Fedora or Debian? Can I just install a package instead of having to download the tar.gz file and untar it, run perl scripts, etc. 2) Is Fedora or Debian considered to be a better production server system? I have no desire for a GUI, just need it to host Subversion, Bugzilla over Apache2, and act as a file and print server for my home network.

• Windows 7 freezes on connecting second time to same wifi network

  I am using Lenovo - y470, which comes with windows 7 home premium. I can connect to my wifi network and there is no issue in that. But the problem comes if the network get disconnected and i again try to connect to same wifi network. As soon as i click on connect my system freezes, and i can not even press ctrl+ alt+ del . The only think i am allowed to do at that time is press and hold power button to shut down the system and restart it again. Please tell me how to resolve this issue. If I remove html/.htaccess the authentication works fine. However when I have both .htaccess files exported/ is being rewritten to /url.php. Any ideas how I can prevent it?

I want to setup a caching DNS server, including some blacklisting of ad domains. The router currently runs the DD-WRT firmware. Is it possible to use this router as an ordinary computer, running only a DNS server, disabling all other features such as DHCP, WLAN, etc? Connecting it to my other router, should I simply run a cable into the WAN-port of the Linksys router?

  Hi, i am using two website on one domain like: www.example.com & www.example.com/site2, i want to know that on my site2, in my site2 their are 2 folders name folder1 and folder2 my index.php is in folder2 but the defination of methods defined in folder2 i am including the files through .htaccess but i am unable to get those files which are in folder1 and getting Error-500 and 400 on browser and i am using following lines but they are not working in .htaccess file The line below works fine RedirectMatch ^/$ http://www.example.com.pk/site2/views/ AllowOverride All php_value include_path ".:/home/example/public_html/site2/system" waiting for your quick response. • Best way to keep configuration for server reinstallation?

  I have a server at home running Ubuntu 12.04 which has grown messy over the years. I have fiddled with various packages, desktop environments (for VNC) etc. and I would like to reinstall it to start again, and have better control over what goes into the box. But I want to keep much of the configurations after reinstallation, like LVM configuration, apache2, samba, etc etc. There would ideally exist a program which could analyze /etc, installed packages and such, store the information, and selectively put it back into the new installation. I am even considering installing Ubuntu server on a virtual machine, just to be able to compare the contents of /etc with a clean installation, and even perform a migration to the virtual machine first, to verify that the transfer process works. How do one go about performing this kind of reinstallation? Have anyone seen any resources on the net on the topic?

• Installing maven on Ubuntu by manual download

  To install Maven, I downloaded the latest version from the website and then followed these steps: http://maven.apache.org/download.html#Installation The last step, the version control, does not work.   I am looking for a way to take the plug from a ear bud and mic set (e.g. the VModa Vibe Duo) and split it into separate headphone and mic 3.5mm plugs so that I can plug into my computer. Has anybody seen such a splitter? (Yes, I have done some quick searching for it) Thanks in advance. The reason why if you care to read this far is that I work from home and long conference calls with a big set of over-the-hear headphones can get tiring. Thus, I'd like to try with a nice ear bud/mic set and see if that is more comfortable.

• Difference between two kinds of Bing URL Referers

  Most of the referral URLS that I get from Bing have the following syntax: http://www.bing.com/search?q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] However I just noticed that maybe 10-20% of them are coming in like this: http://www.bing.com/url?source=search&[some other variables]&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.example.com/user-landing-page-on-my-site&yrktarget=_top&q=keywords+keywords&[some other variables] The first syntax gives me the keywords the user typed in, but the second actually gives me the keywords the user typed in and their landing page on my site. I was originally unaware of this second kind altogether because I have a customized referral report that filters out URLs containing my domain. But now that I noticed them I want to know why they occur to see if I can get more to occur this way because the second syntax contains more valuable information. If I go to one of the first URLs, it gives me a typical Bing query page. The second URLs seem to just redirect me to the Bing home page. I'm not sure if it has to do with the kind of search being performed (I also get a few http://www.bing.com/shopping/search?q= referers) or some other metric. Does anyone know what causes some referral URLs from Bing to have the /search?q syntax and others to have the /url?source syntax? P.S. I have verified that I am getting both kinds of URLs from non-advertising clicks. P.P.S. I am not talking about data in Google Analytics or similar software but the raw $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] value coming from the client's original request.

• Wifi not working on Acer Aspire One D270

  brand new baby linux user here, never used Ubuntu or any other linux OS before, so be gentle and use short words! I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my new Acer Aspire One D270-F61C/KF netbook (it's a Japanese computer which had Japanese windows preinstalled, and I decided to take the plunge and try Ubuntu because English Windows costs the earth and stars). Wifi isn't working; I enter my wireless password, it tries to connect for a while, then asks for my password again. And KEEPS ASKING, every few minutes. Wired connection works fine. Wireless card is a Broadcom BCM4313; I have the "additional drivers" checked and installed (I tried unchecking and then reinstalling them in case that would help, no joy, and now my home wifi connection isn't showing up in the list of available connections, argh). I've done a lot of googling and I gather there's a lot of issues with Broadcom cards, but some of the answers are for earlier ubuntu builds and many of them are a bit confusing for a new user. I gather I need to try installing some new drivers other than the proprietary ones provided, but I'm having trouble figuring out how that's done. Anyone got some simple, step by step instructions for me? Please bear in mind, TOTAL N00B. (EDIT): OKAY, got it fixed finally; after suggestions on the Ubuntu forums and messing around with drivers, what finally worked was installing Wicd. Not... using Wicd, for some reason, just installing it fixed it. ...I CHOOSE NOT TO QUESTION IT.
