Is there hope that Ubuntu will update GCC in the package repository before the next release in October (11.10). This question asks a similar thing except for an earlier version of Ubuntu and GCC. A second part of the question, if the answer is "no" to the first, then can I hope to see it appear in Ubuntu's unstable repository?

  If you’re doing any work with networking, you probably need to know the name of your computer. Rather than diving into Control Panel, there’s a really simple way to do this from the command prompt. Note: If you haven’t already, be sure to read our complete guide to networking Windows 7 with XP and Vista. To see the hostname… all you have to do is type hostname at the command prompt. Go figure, eh? The same thing works in Linux or OS X, though you can see that most of the time the hostname is part of the prompt anyway. Note: you can also change the hostname by simply typing “hostname <newhostname>”. Of course, the easiest way to see your computer name in Windows is to just hit the Win+Break key combination, which will pop up the System pane from Control Panel.   If you want to change it instead, you can always change your computer name easily through Control Panel.   I plan to make a set of classic socket functions to simplify their usages. Since i work under windows and linux indifferently i usually make it portable (it's not my first version of this set of functions), but i want to do something different this time and dedicate one version to windows, and one other to linux. With that i wonder for the windows version, if the WSA* functions can have any interest using them instead of the psock ones. I have found nothing about a comparison between them, so if any of you have any idea, suggestion, link or benchmark ?

• Monitor flickering ATI

  I'm using ubuntu 12.10 on laptop samsung with randeon hd 6620g (APU A8), when I run amdcccle -version it says 2.18, not sure if that's the correct version. My problem is that I have and external monitor, AOC e2343Fsk and when I finally got it working at the resolution I want 1920x1080 it works fine for like 5minutes and then it starts flickering... I solved this on Windows (the exact same problem) with some options (I don't remember very well) I believe there were some buttons '+' and '-' on some vsync option I played with them on windows and Yay! got it working, but I don't see anything similar on this catalyst version (I used xorg-edgers ppa for installing fglrx). • Kernel panic when booting from USB

  I downloaded ubuntu-11.04-desktop-amd64.iso and used Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.6.3.exe to format my USB stick und put the ISO on it. When I tried to install from it, I've got a kernel panic just like here, except for the version number (mine was 2.6.38-8-generic #42-ubuntu). My ISO image seems to work, as I installed it into a VMWare player without problems. Booting Linux from USB works surely too, as I did it some time ago with an older Ubuntu version. I can imagine things to try out, e.g., write the image again, try another version, pray, look for patches, etc. However, I'm looking for a time-efficient solution, something what most probably works. An advice of the sort "wait two weeks until it's surely fixed, then download again" is acceptable, I'm determined to switch to Linux, but it can wait a bit.

• Single-developer GIT workflow (moving from straightforward FTP)

  I'm trying to decide whether moving to VCS is sensible for me. I am a single web developer in a small organisation (5 people). I'm thinking of VCS (Git) for these reasons: version control, offsite backup, centralised code repository (can access from home). At the moment I work on a live server generally. I FTP in, make my edits and save them, then reupload and refresh. The edits are usually to theme/plugin files for CMSes (e.g. concrete5 or Wordpress). This works well but provides no backup and no version control. I'm wondering how best to integrate VCS into this procedure. I would envisage setting up a Git server on the company's web server, but I'm not clear how to push changes out to client accounts (usually VPSes on the same server) - at the moment I simply log into SFTP with their details and make the changes directly. I'm also not sure what would sensibly represent a repository - would each client's website get their own one? Any insights or experience would be really helpful. I don't think I need the full power of Git by any means, but basic version control and de facto cloud access would be really useful.

  In my ubuntu 12.04, the graphviz is not the latest version(2.29). I need some features available in the latest version of graphviz. I tried to install the graphviz version 2.29, which requires libgraphviz4(=2.18). I anyhow installed libgraphviz4 and installed graphviz 2.29. For that I have to remove packages libcdt4 and libpathplan4. Now whenever I try to generate graph, I get some problems: For e.g.: dot -Kfdp -n -Tpng -o samplePOS.png forcePOS.dot It says: dot: error while loading shared libraries: libgvc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory neato -Tps -o sample_1.ps sourcedot.gv It says: neato: error while loading shared libraries: libgvc.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory So, I am looking for some ways so that I can run graphviz 2.29 in my ubuntu 12.04.

• Importing an existing project into Git

  Background During the course of developing our site (ASP.NET), we discovered that our existing source control (SourceGear Vault) wasn't working for us. So, we decided to migrate to Git. The translation has been less than smooth though. Our site is broken up into three environments DEV, QA, and PROD. For tho most part, DEV and the source control repo have been in sync with each other. There is one branch in the repo, if a page was going to be moved up to QA then the file was moved manually, same thing with stuff that was ready for PROD. So, our current QA and PROD environments do not correspond to any particular commit in the master branch. Clarification: The QA and PROD branches are not currently, nor have they ever been in source control. The Question How do I move QA and PROD into Git? Should I forget about the history we've maintained up to this point and start over with a new repo? I could start with everything on PROD, then make a branch and pull in everything from QA, and then make another branch off of that with DEV. That way not only will the branches reflect the differences in the environments, they'll be in the right order chronologically with the newest commits in the DEV branch. What I've tried so far I thought about creating a QA branch off of the current master and using robocopy to make the working folder look like the current QA environment. This doesn't work because the new commit from QA will remove new files from DEV and that will remove them when we merge up, I suspect there will be similar problems if I started QA at an earlier (though not exact) commit from DEV.

• Option Button in Keyboard Layout > Input Sources is not pressable

  I would like to set the Caps-lock key as a Compose key, which you do, as far as I remember, by pressing the Options Button in Keyboard Layout Input Sources and then enabling the appropriate option there. That Button is not pressable though since I switched to 12.10. It did work in previous releases of Ubuntu. gnome-control-center puts out these errors, when I click on Keyboard Layout: (gnome-control-center:3645): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: Could not find current language '?\u0003C!\u007f' in the treeview (gnome-control-center:3645): common-cc-panel-WARNING **: locale '"en_US.UTF-8"' isn't valid I'm not sure if the errors are related though, maybe they are related to the "interface switching to chinese bug" which seems surprisingly widespread: Language changed to Chinese, how do I change it back? • CPU spikes to 100% when trying to watch video

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 and now CPU spikes to 100% when trying to watch a video. I don't want to hear that this is a problem with Flash or whatever... Playing video on my machine with Ubuntu 11 was just fine. In fact I have another machine still with Ubuntu 11 and it continues to play video just fine. Now I'm stuck with this 12.04 version and want to know how to downgrade back to version 11 as that version isn't buggy. (hence a downgrade).

• How to handle "porting" software that's still in development

  My company is building an iOS version of an Android app that our client is developing (but has not yet released). We have access to the latest builds and source, however since the software is frequently re-structured and refactored, we're doing a lot of unnecessary re-work. In addition, the due date on the contract will likely be passed before the client's application is even ready for release. In other words, we're supposed to build the iOS version before the original Android version is even complete. Luckily the client tossed out the original deadline, but now we may have to renegotiate pricing... never a fun situation. Are we handling this incorrectly? How are "ports" (especially between mobile platforms) normally done? Is there a correct way to pipeline development for multiple platforms without so much re-work? Thanks in advance! :)

• Create subdomains via C-Panel or via domain registrar?

  I am a novice, so excuse me if it sounds dummy. I read a few similar questions on this topic here but they did not answer my question. I have a personal website, hosted with C-panel control panel. Via C-panel I can easily create new subdomains and I do not need to apply any DNS settings or so. And the subdomian is good to go immediately and are working fine. I have unlimited subdomains option. When I check my DNS management control panel in my domain registrar's site, there is no record associated with my subdomains. Now I want to buy a new domain name from 1and1, and have it as an add-on domain in my prevouse host. 1and1 say they only allow 5 subdomains. What does this mean? Can not I create unlimited subdomains under my new domain name, just as I do for my old domain? How does C-panel create and manage subdomains that there is nothing about it in my DNS control panel? • Trouble with Libreoffice 4.0.* in Ubuntu 12.04

  I have used Libreoffice Impress to give presentations at meetings for some time now. The current version of Libreoffice in Ubuntu 12.04 is 3.5.7.2 and this works fine for me. Recently, following a recommendation from a colleague, I installed Libreoffice 4.0.something using the Libreoffice PPA. This worked, but I discovered when going into slide show mode most of the graphics (line graphs) disappeared, even though they were perfectly visible in the original. Lettering, drawings, and pictures came over, but not the line graphs (which were originally inserted in .eps format most likely). With some effort I managed to uninstall the more recent version of Libreoffice, and reinstall the version in the Ubuntu repositories (3.5.7.2) and the graphs now appear as expected in the slide show mode. Is there any explanation for this behaviour?
