  What purpose does having a virtual floppy drive on a guest in ESX serve? Is there a way to configure ESX by default to NOT include such a device? It's annoying to have to remove it by hand once a new VM is ready to be provisioned.

  I am running Windows Vista Ultimate and I want to change the permissions in Windows\Temp. For example, I want to remove the read-only attribute in General. When I do this I get an error that reads, "You will need to provide administrator permission to change these attributes." When I click continue, it does something but the Read-only box is still partially checked. How do I take control of Windows\Temp?

  Whenever I start up Outlook it pops up a dialog asking if I want to connect to the Exchange server or work offline, or just quit the program. If I don't respond Outlook doesn't continue starting up. Is there any way I tell Outlook not to bring up this dialog box, but just connect by default?

• Password manager bug with Firefox 3.6.13

  I'm having trouble with the latest Firefox (3.6.13) password manager. For a website I'm working on, it doesn't fill the password field for any login credential saved. I've looked into the options "Saved passwords" list and they are all there with the correct passwords. I thought at first that the website was blocking this feature in some way, but the password managers in Chrome (on the same Windows 7 machine) and Iceweasel (in a virtual Debian 6 machine) work well. Any idea about what could cause this problem?

  When you're prompted to login to a site using HTTP authentication (the kind with the pop-up box requesting username/password), Firefox's password manager populates it with only the first stored password for that domain. Is there a way to have Firefox prompt for WHICH account should be used? It is unlike the normal HTML login forms in which you can just press the down arrow to select from multiple login accounts.

• Debug/step into a Linux boot

  Is there a way to watch Linux boot as though it was a program compiled with GCC on a Linux environment using the -g switch so, say, I can step through the entire boot sequence from GRUB onwards, choosing to step through at C source level or assembly when necessary/desirable, by using GDB or a GDB-like tool? I suspect it would require a virtual machine at least, to watch the boot on a host environment. Any elaboration on this topic of observing a boot would be appreciated!

• Backup linux to ftp server

  What do you use for backups to ftp server? I've tried the setup with Amanda and virtual tapes on the ftp server mounted with Curlftpfs and I'm not satisfied with it. I just don't feel confident about Amanda. Also I cannot use anything that uses rsync on the ftp mounted filesystem because it only creates the directories and doesn't create files as it cannot execute "mkstemp". I've been thinking about Bacula but I can't find any good HOWTO for it.

I just want my data to be saved on the virtual windows hard drive. How can I remove the snapshot of 20GB without losing my documents and settings and without starting another one keeping growing ? We need the backup application to backup to a NAS and perform incremental backups following the full backup. We also need to be able to store versions of each file.   Hello, I am running Windows 7 on my PC, and I am running a Windows 2008 Server VM in Windows Virtual PC. Both machines have network connectivity. However, I cannot ping the VM from the host neither by computer name nor IP. I can ping the host machine from the VM both by computer name and IP. Is there something I need to enable on the VM to allow it to be seen by other machines on my network? Thanks!

  I'm using Gmail (for domains) When viewing the inbox, converations are sorted by their 'last activity', usualy an email. However, when I view all conversations of a single label, by clicking the label in the box left on the screen, mails are ordered by first activity.   I am running a dicom receiver on a Centos 6 box on top of a Xen server. If I attempt to send data to it from a remote server I get the following error: storescp: relocation error: /lib/libresolv.so.2: symbol memcpy, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference If I send data to the server locally it works, but sending to it from remote gives the above error. I do not think this is a problem that is specific to the storescp server.

  I'm trying to measure would it be better to have prefork or worker mpm apache module for the server I'm working on, which is Amazon X-Large 15 GB memory 8 EC2 Compute Units (4 virtual cores with 2 EC2 Compute Units each) and that will run a Magento website with about 50 active users at once. Site serves a lot of images and about 45 requests per page. Images sometimes hang, so it seems worker would be a better option? Thanks

  I am trying to restore a Windows 7 (Ultimate) PC to its factory settings manually, basically by uninstalling everything in the Add/Remove Programs dialogue box, deleting all personal files and running CCleaner. This is going to take a while. I can't do a clean install because I don't have physical access to the computer, do any good tools exist for restoring Windows 7 to its factory settings when a clean install isn't an option?
