  hello, here is the details: theres is who "servers": VPS with ubuntu 10.10x32 and home pc, win7 on win7 apatche2.2 is running with webpage on VPS game server is running DNS forwards www subdomain to PC, and everything else to VPS (all via ip) I can not configure DNS directly, my providers do Wanted result: DNS forwards everything to VPS, VPS redirects *:80 to PC when viewing page stored in PC domain is shown normaly Questions: How to achieve that using as minimal resources as possible? Is it possible just tel my DNS provider to fix it that :80 port is in different ip? P.S. its for my friend, i do have some apatche and VDS configuration exp. More of a programmer i am. so trow everything you can ;)

• Wine causes twin view to break

  I have endlessly been playing around with the Nvidia X Server settings and changing my xorg.conf file to try and work for me and on most days its fine. In each instance I get it working for a while and then this morning the most bizarre thing happens. The moment I open any type of Wine program (which never use to be a problem) my Twin View setup disappears and am left with mirrored displays. I try and change the settings in the Nvidia driver, but its not interested and the screens remain mirrored. I have a work around. Restart my pc... • Wifi doesn't connect if I'm upstairs

  Hello there, I'm finding that Wifi connects when I'm in the living room, where the internet router etc is. But if I try to connect upstairs it is a no go. Booting in Windows 7 (dual boot :D ) I find that Wifi connects. I find this very confusing and have it since the install. Please help! • Can't set up Usermin correctly to allow users to login outside of local network, what am I missing?

  I'm fairly new at creating a server, but the biggest problem I am currently having at the moment is getting Usermin set up to be accessible from outside the LAN. I talked to other people that use it and was told that all I need to do is type the url:20000 to access the login screen, but that doesn't work. I have also tried the ip:20000 and that doesn't lead to anything. Instead I get the error message: Error - Bad Request This web server is running in SSL mode. Try the URL https://hostname:10000/ instead. (where hostname is my server's hostname) I know it must be a configuration issue, but I have checked all my settings and as far as I can tell I don't have the ports blocked anywhere. I have the correct ports forwarded on my router and my server firewall doesn't have the port block either. Is there anything I am missing? Any help would be appreciated and I will add more information upon request. Thank You.

• Bad IIS 7.5 performance on webserver

  I have a webpage (ASP.NET 4.0 / MVC 4). On my development machine (i5-2500 3.3 8GB Win7 VS2010 SP1 Fujitsu Esprimo P700) the page performs with 160 requests/sec on devenv webserver on my machine. The page performs with 250 requests/sec on my local IIS 7.5. (uncompiled web) The page performs with 20 requests per second on a 16core 32gb ram production server (Fujitsu RX-300 w2k8 rc2 IIS 7.5). (compiled web) Why? I think it's the IIS configuration but i can't figure out whats the problem. The page runs with 1 worker process on both machines. Web garden is not an option (it helps but the app isnt compatible with)

• Wireless performance on Ubuntu 9.10

  Is there something I should do to my networking configuration in Ubuntu to better the performance of my wireless connection? I'm on a netbook dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I pick up much stronger wifi signal when in Windows than Ubuntu. As soon as I boot Ubuntu, it will connect to the network with a stronger signal, and then loses signal very quickly. After it dies, I can't reconnect. I've tested this on a couple of different networks with the same outcome.

• Lost connectivity after configuring multiple network adapters on separate networks

  I am trying to setup an Ubuntu hosting server, currently just for development, and the server has two NICs, each sitting on a different network. eth0 is on 192.168.200.* and eth1 is on 192.168.101.* and each one has a static IP. eth0 is the public facing NIC card and eth1 is strictly for internal access to the server. I initially only setup eth0 and added the eth1 card when I needed it. eth0 was working find until I added eth1, now, can't get any connectivity on eth0 unless I pull eth1 out of the box. The configuration on each system is as follows: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.200.94 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.200.0 broadcast 192.168.200.255 gateway 192.168.200.253 auto eth1 iface eth1 inet static address 192.168.101.64 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.101.0 broadcast 192.168.101.255 gateway 192.168.101.254 Again eth0 worked fine until I added eth1. I have seen this happen with Windows servers if you have a Default Gateway setup for both NICs, but I am not sure if this works the same on Ubuntu. • What methods are there to configure puppet to serve resources for multiple environments?

  I seem to come across two ways for using puppet in multiple environments: 1) Install a puppetmaster in each environment and only update the recipes from source control for that environment when ready to deploy the recipes in that environment. 2) Use one puppetmaster and use a variable in the puppet.conf of each client to specify the environment and then in the puppetmaster specify a different modulepath for each environment and each of those paths is updated to the branch of the recipe repository intended for that environment (e.g. dev, staging, production). Only running one puppetmaster seems like it is one less piece of infrastructure to keep running but there is some additional complexity in the configuration. Are there additional pros or cons to one of these methods or something which I'm missing entirely?

• Running Subversion on Windows sans Apache?

  We're stuck with a Windows IIS 6 server at the moment. We'd really like to get a decent OS version control system set up for it. Can Subversion run without Apache? Most documentation that I've come across states that Apache is required, but I have seen a few mentions that Subversion can run as a stand-alone-server by itself alongside IIS. Alas, I can't find details on that particular configuration. Is that true and, if so, can anyone point me to some documentation on that?

• It is inconsiderate to place editor settings inside code files?

  I know this is kind of a subjective question, but I'm curious if there's any good reason to place (or not place) editor settings inside code files. I'm thinking in vi modelines, but it is possible that this applies to other editors. In short, a vi modeline is a line inside a file that tells vi how to behave (indent with spaces or tabs, set tabwidth to X, autoindent by default or not, ...) that is placed inside a comment, so it won't affect the program/compiler when running. In a .c file it could be similar to // vim: noai:ts=4:sw=4 On one hand, I think this shouldn't be inside the file, as it is an editor setting and so belongs to an editor configuration file or property. On the other hand, for projects involving developers outside one company (that are not imposed an editor/settings) or collaborators on github/bitbucket/... it is an easy way to avoid breaking the code style (tabs vs spaces for example), but only for the ones that use that editor though. I cannot see any powerful enough reason to decide for or against this practice, so I am in doubt of what to do.

• Duplicated menu, panel indicators and taskbar

  Ubuntu 12.04. The first time I log into Gnome Classic I get a duplicate of every menu, panel indicator and taskbar entry. If I log out and back in again I now have three copies. Log out and log in, four copies and so forth. What would cause this? • Cisco 350 Bridge vxWorks connecting to IOS

  I have 2 bridges one is a Cisco 350 Bridge with vxWorks as a non-root bridge w/o clients and another Cisco 350 Bridge running IOS set as Root Bridge. It seems no matter what configuration I can't seem to associate the vxworks to the IOS bridge. I have even tried swapping the roles and they still do not communicate. Any ideas how I can make the two connect, I would have upgraded the 350 to IOS as well but it will not upgrade. From my research it appears there is no way for these two devices to communicate but I wanted to be sure of that.

• Sharepoint 2010 reacts very badly to having it's IP address changed. How do I fix it?

  I have Sharepoint 2010 set up on a virtual host for prototyping various projects. If I restart the host, the IP changes. Afterwards, SP complains that it can't find it's configuration database. I can't find where it might be storing an IP. To clarify, the URL remains the same - I have a dynamic dns solution in place to handle that. I can't see anything in the web.config files or the database connection strings that would indicate a hardcoded IP. How can I fix this up in less time than re-installing every time I need to do a project?

• Dropbox fails to install on Ubuntu 13.10

  I've done some research and it seems Dropbox has some problems with the status icon on Ubuntu 13.10, but I can't even manage to install it. The very first time, I installed nautilus-dropbox from the app center on a freshly installed Saucy, but I couldn't see the status icon and clicking the app icon wouldn't help, so I uninstalled and rebooted. The second and third time, the app just freezed at about 75% while installing from app manager, so I had to shut down the computer and uninstall. Next I tried to install dropbox from the .deb (from website): it installed (the launcher?) from app manager, then the dialog prompted me to start dropbox and finally to download the official daemon, but the download freezed at 0% and made everything else buggy/laggy (probably also because I restarted nautilus, as required, at that point). After a purge and clean from terminal, some icons and this file (which I suspect is somehow responsible, but of course is locked) are still present on my computer. Can anyone help me figure how how to install it? How could I remove that configuration file so I can give it a last shot?

• Logical move of a server to UK, what do I do with the SSL certificates

  I have been asked to move a rails application from the US to the UK. This involves bringing up the rails stack on Ubuntu 8.04.4; that's completed. I'm stumped with the SSL configuration though. The plan was to bring this server up with the same domain name but temporarily use a subdomain (app2.xxx.com instead of app.xxx.com) during the move and for testing, then rename it to app.xxx.com when we're ready for the cutover (does that make sense?). In the meantime, we need a new cert for the app2 subdomain. So to generate a CSR, I need a server key but do I need a new one, or should I copy the one from the existing production server?

Windows server firewall should make logs of data that is transfered. It should not be possible to connect directly to private networks from internet. How could I do it? • Make GRUB 2 boot Windows 8 safe mode

  I have a dual boot configuration: Windows 8 Consumer and Ubuntu 11.10. I tried to install the Asus drivers for my motherboard (P8Z68-V LE EFI) in windows 8, and i now get bluescreens when starting windows. Holding F8 or Shift-F8 doesn't seem to be working, so is there another way to get into Safe Mode, or uninstall the errant driver? I need to get into Safe Mode in windows to fix the issue. Things I have tried: Disabling overclock Holding F8 or Shift+F8 How can i get GRUB 2 to boot windows 8 in safe mode? Or is there another way to disable a driver that is making it impossible to boot?

  I have a site www.example.com for which i purchased SSL cert and installed. And it was working fine, I also have a subdomain with app.example.com which was not on SSL. Both www.example.com and app.example.com are on same IP address. At later we decided to put SSL only on app.frostbox.com and then i configured SSL with app.frostbox.com and it worked fine, Now the issue is that Google is indexing my site as https://www.example.com/ and when users hits the web , Invalid security warning is issued and when user allow security issue they are shown my app.example.com contents. Note: I have my SSL configuration files in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ssl.conf The contents of the ssl.conf are below. NOTE: I tried solutions in .httaccess but none of those worked. • Can I install 12.04 packages on 11.10?

  I'm running 11.10 and am trying to apply the fix to this bug in Empathy, shown at the very bottom. There is an updated package for the offending component available in the Precise repository, and someone even posted a backported .deb package for use on Oneiric. However, when I try to install that package, it seems to have a dependency on a package that isn't available for Oneiric: (Reading database ... 254452 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace telepathy-indicator 0.0.7-0ubuntu1 (using telepathy-indicator_0.1.1-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ... Unpacking replacement telepathy-indicator ... dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of telepathy-indicator: telepathy-indicator depends on libunity9 (>= 3.4.6); however: Package libunity9 is not installed. dpkg: error processing telepathy-indicator (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: telepathy-indicator The person who posted the backported telepathy-indicator package indicated that it depends upon libunity-dev-5.0; the latest version in the Oneiric repositories is a 4.0 vintage. I also can't find a libunity9 available for Oneiric, so I'm wondering: is it possible to just add the Precise repository to my list and pull the updated packages from there, or should I not expect that they would operate correctly?

• Ubuntu 12.04 issue installing Webmin modules (file does not exist)

  I'm running ubuntu 12.04. On this machine I have Webmin 1.580 installed. When trying to add a new module to Webmin I receive an error: "Failed to install module from : File does not exist" This happens when i go to Webmin Configuration Webmin Modules Select "Third party module from" Select "OpenVPN admin tool" and clicking on install module After I selected "OpenVPN admin tool" this url is being added: http://www.openit.it/downloads/OpenVPNadmin/openvpn-2.5.wbm.gz This URL resolves to a correct file. When uploading the file directly, the same error occurs. In the log file: /var/webmin/webmin.log nothing special is reported. How can I fix this issue? P.s. I run this server in CLI mode

• Safety concerns on allowing connections to MySQL with no password on localhost?

  In the case of a Linux system, is there any security concern to let MySQL users with standard privileges (that is, not the root users) connect to the database with no password from localhost? I think that enforcing a password even for localhost can add a layer of protection, since, with no password the database access would be compromised if the SSH access is itself compromised. Considering that, would it be less safe to allow no password connection to MySQL than having the same password for SSH and for MySQL? I don't know if that is to be taken into account, but we also use phpMyAdmin to let users administrate their own database. I am asking because I kinda dislike having to put our database passwords unencrypted in the source or configuration files of our applications, where they can easily be leaked unintentionally. Since our servers are configured to run our applications as the Linux user the application belongs to, I was considering allowing no password from localhost as a simple solution. So, would that be a very bad idea or not?

• ssh freezes when trying to connect to some hosts

  When I try to ssh to particular machine/s in a list, The SSH command happens to be freezing. I tried out setting ssh timeout. But then also it's freezes even after the timeout. In verbose mode : OpenSSH_3.9p1, OpenSSL 0.9.7a Feb 19 2003 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug1: Connecting to x358.x.server.com [10.x.x.x] port 22. debug1: fd 3 clearing O_NONBLOCK debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /export/home/sqlrpt/.ssh/identity type -1 debug1: identity file /export/home/sqlrpt/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /export/home/sqlrpt/.ssh/id_dsa type 2 At this point it freezes. A work around I thought was to create a child process for each ssh calls and if the process doesn't respond after a timeout - Kill it. But are there any less complex ways, so that I can accommodate it in a shell script itself rather than going for a C/C++ program ?
