  I have the following virtual host on my development server: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName example.com DocumentRoot /srv/web/example.com/pub <Directory /srv/web/example.com/pub> Order Deny,Allow Deny from all Allow from 192.168.0.3 </Directory> </VirtualHost> The Allow from 192.168.0.3 part is to only allow requests from my workstation machine. I want to tweak this to allow anyone to request a certain URL: http://example.com/public/file.html How do I change this to allow /public/file.html requests to get through from anyone? Note: /public/file.html doesn't actually exist as a file on the server. I redirect all incoming requests through a single index file using mod_rewrite.

• Access points fighting for dominance?

  We have a small office with a large number of wireless devices (a mixture of desktop machines, laptops, and wifi-enabled phones) all working from a single Apple Airport Extreme which extends our wired network. I've added another Airport Extreme for resiliency, since we've been seeing a decrease in performance and (as far as I understand) access points can only handle a small number of clients. I set the new AP to extend the current network so that the clients weren't constantly switching between different wireless networks, however as soon as this AP was configured all the wireless devices started seeing network trouble, flicking on and off. I'm assuming that this is because both APs are reasonably strong, and the client can't decide which to use. What is the best route to follow to resolve this? What I'm aiming for is wireless resiliency; preferably having two APs share the network load, or if this isn't an option then having a primary AP with a "fail-over", should the primary go down for any reason.

• Windows 2008 Domain Controller - Backup (BDC) to Primary (PDC)

  I have created a new domain controller with my single domain forest. I have also made it DHCP and DNS ready - all 3 services have synchronised with the existing W2K8 domain controller. I even migrated the FSMO roles and thought everything was fine. Indeed all machines on network appear to obtain DHCP and DNS from new server and the AD is working on the new server as my internal website uses it for login authentication. I have just noticed, via BgInfo - Sys Internals - that the new server is showing as "backup" and the old as "primary" - I thought I had already achieved this. Have the FSMO roles swapped back - as I have yet to have removed the old server from AD (dcpromo). Do I need to do anything before I run dcpromo on the old server? Any thoughts appreciated....

  how is latency affected when multiple domains are using one single static IP address ? The scenario is in shared web-hosting By latency meaning the DNS lookup the client has to do. As far as I understand it, the browser would hit the root servers to try to figure out the IP Address and it belongs where and then when it comes to the correct server, it probably looks up some sort of table to determine which site names much and show that site as such via browser to the user. Is my understanding correct or backwards or what ?

• How to associate all file types within Wine with its corresponding native application?

  This is easily done for a single file type, as answered in How to associate a file type within Wine with a native application?, by creating a .reg for the desired filetype. But this is for AVI only. I use some wine apps (uTorrent, Soulseek, Eudora, to name a few) that can launch a wide range of files. Email attachments, for example, can be JPG, DOC, PDF, PPS... its impossible (and not desirable) to track down all possible file types that one may receive in an email or download in a torrent. So I neeed a solution to be more generic and broad. I need the file association to honor whatever native app is currently configured. And I want this to be done for all file types configured in my system. I've already figured out how to make the solution generic. Simply replacing the launched app in .reg for winebrowser, like this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf] @="PDFfile" "Content Type"="application/pdf" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PDFfile\Shell\Open\command] @="C:\\windows\\system32\\winebrowser.exe \"%1\"" Ive tested this and it works correctly. Since winebrowser uses xdg-open as a backend, and converts my windows path to a Unix one, the correct (Linux) app is launched. So I need a "batch" updater to wine's registry, sort of a wine-update-associations script that I can run whenever a new app is installed. Maybe a tool that can: List all Mime Types types in my system that have a default, installed app associated Extract all the needed info (glob, mime type, etc) Generate the .REG file in the above format The tricky part is: i've searched a LOT to find info about how association is done in Ubuntu 10.10 onwards, and documentation is scarce and confusing, to say the least. Freedesktop.org has no complete spec, and even Gnome docs are obsolete. So far I've gathered 4 files that contain association info, but im clueless on which (or why) to use, or how to use them to generate the .reg file: ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ~/.local/share/applications/miminfo.cache /usr/share/applications/miminfo.cache /etc/gnome/defaults.list Any help, script or explanation would be greatly appreciated! • How can I keep websites from knowing where I live?

  This questions is related to issues and practicality, not security. I live in Brazil and, apparently, every single website I visit knows about it. Usually that's ok, but there are quite a few sites that don't make use of that information adequately. For instance: Bing keeps thinking that brazilian pages are way more relevant to me than american ones (which they're not). Google.com always redirects me to google.com.br. Microsoft automatically sends me to horribly translated support pages in portuguese (which would just be easier to read in english). These are just a few examples. Usually it's stuff I can live with (or work around), but some of them are just plain irritating. I have geolocation disabled in firefox, so I guess they're either getting this information from my IP or from windows itself (which I bought here). Is there a way to avoid this? Either tell them nothing or make them think I live somewhere else? Thanks

• Mono is frequently used to say "Yes, .NET is cross-platform". How valid is that claim?

  In What would you choose for your project between .NET and Java at this point in time ? I say that I would consider the "Will you always deploy to Windows?" the single most important decision to make up front in a new web project, and if the answer is "no", I would recommend Java instead of .NET. A very common counter-argument is that "If we ever want to run on Linux/OS X/Whatever, we'll just run Mono", which is a very compelling argument on the surface, but I don't agree for several reasons. OpenJDK and all the vendor supplied JVM's have passed the official Sun TCK ensuring things work correctly. I am not aware of Mono passing a Microsoft TCK. Mono trails the .NET releases. What .NET-level is currently fully supported? Does all GUI elements (WinForms?) work correctly in Mono? Businesses may not want to depend on Open Source frameworks as the official plan B. I am aware that with the new governance of Java by Oracle, the future is unsafe, but e.g. IBM provides JDK's for many platforms, including Linux. They are just not open sourced. So, under which circumstances is Mono a valid business strategy for .NET-applications?

• Using EC2 instance as main development platform

  My problem I am working as a consultant for various companies. Each company provides me with a laptop where with their software on and I also have my own where I have my development environment. I tend to buy a new laptop every second year and find myself spending lots of time configuring and installing software. I also sometimes spend a lot of time waiting for my laptop to process things. To solve all these issues, I am now considering using EC2 (running windows instances) as my main development platform and just access this from any PC I happen to be at. I calculated that running the High-CPU On-Demand Instances (medium) for 8 hours a day for a year costs me 580$, which is acceptable. I imagine that when I approach the workplace each day, I will make a single click my phone to fire up the instance, so it is ready when I get to work. I should have different icons on my phone to fire up the various instance types. The same software should of course automatically be loaded on the various hardware (sometimes I would even need their instance with 68.4 GB of memory). Another advantage is that if I am having a specific problem with my instance, I could fire up another instance and have someone look into the problem and update the image. My question: Does anyone have experience with such a setup on EC2? What kind of problems do you forsee?

• multiple vlans routed on one nic? trunk?General? or Access?

  ok for the last week I've tried racking my head around this... I have a SRW208P with 802.1q support, and a virtual endian appliance. I would like to be able to have 3 vlans having everything routed through the endian appliance.. i.e. The Virtual server has 2 bridged NIC's to the switch. This is where I'm getting confused .. On the 8 port switch I've got the 3 vlans set up ok (all being untagged as they are not going to be vlan aware), it's the port I'm connecting the endian firewall to the switch I'm having trouble with (second nic goes to the adsl modem and NAT'd) Is it meant to be a trunk, "Genereal" or "Access" then untagged or tagged? the end goal is to have vlan traffic routing through the single NIC and have endian route vlan traffic according to the rules. Any one have any ideas on the cisco small business stuff? Thanks

• lots of dns requests from China, should I worry?

  I have turned on dns query logs, and when running "tail -f /var/log/syslog" I see that I get hundreds of identical requests from a single ip address: Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#10856: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#44334: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#15268: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + Apr 7 12:36:13 server17 named[26294]: client 121.12.173.191#59597: query: mydomain.de IN ANY + The frequency is about 5 - 10 requests per second, going on for about a minute. After that the same effect repeats from a different IP address. I have now logged about 10000 requests from about 25 ip addresses within just a couple of hours, all of them come from China according to "whois [ipaddr]". What is going on here? Is my name server under attack? Can I do something about this?

  Note, this is repost from stackoverflow - I have only just discovered this site :) I need to split a string in Unrealscript, in the same way that Java's split function works. For instance - return the string "foo" as an array of char. I have tried to use the SplitString function: array SplitString( string Source, optional string Delimiter=",", optional bool bCullEmpty ) Wrapper for splitting a string into an array of strings using a single expression. as found at http://udn.epicgames.com/Three/UnrealScriptFunctions.html but it returns the entire String. simulated function wordDraw() { local String inputString; inputString = "trolls"; local string whatwillitbe; local int b; local int x; local array<String> letterArray; letterArray = SplitString(inputString,, false); for (x = 0; x < letterArray.Length; x++) { whatwillitbe = letterArray[x]; `log('it will be '@whatwillitbe); b = letterarray.Length; `log('letterarray length is '@b); `log('letter number '@x); } } Output is: b returns: 1 whatwillitbe returns: trolls However I would like b to return 6 and whatwillitbe to return each character individually. • Twitter 2 for Android crash every time I try uploading multi photos [closed]

  Hello, I'm using the new Twitter 2 on Android 2.1. Whenever I hit the button which enables me to upload multiple photos in a single tweet, I always get the error "The application Camera (process com.sonyericsson.camera) has stopped unexpectidly. Please try again". However, uploading a single photo using the camera button in Twitter have no problem, it works. My phone is Sony Ericsson x10 mini pro. I tried signing out and back in, same result. Anything I can do to fix this? • Which web site gives the most accurate indication of a programmer's capabilities?

  If you were hiring programmers, and could choose between one of (say) the top 100 coders on topcoder.com, or one of the top 100 on stackoverflow.com, which would you choose? At least to me, it would appear that topcoder.com gives a more objective evaluation of pure ability to solve problems and write code. At the same time, despite obvious technical capabilities, this person may lack any hint of social skills -- he may be purely a "lone coder", with little or no ability to help/work with others, may lack mentoring ability to help transfer his technical skills to others, etc. On the other hand, stackoverflow.com would at least appear to give a much better indication of peers' opinion of the coder in question, and the degree to which his presence and useful and helpful to others on the "team". At the same time, the scoring system is such that somebody who just throws up a lot of mediocre (or even poor answers) will almost inevitably accumulate a positive total of "reputation" points -- a single up-vote (perhaps just out of courtesy) will counteract the effects of no fewer than 5 down-votes, and others are discouraged (to some degree) from down-voting because they have to sacrifice their own reputation points to do so. At the same time, somebody who makes little or no technical contribution seems unlikely to accumulate a reputation that lands them (even close to) the top of the heap, so to speak. So, which provides a more useful indication of the degree to which this particular coder is likely to be useful to your organization? If you could choose between them, which set of coders would you rather have working on your team?

I realize that I didn't get the subtitles, so what I want to do is convert the AVI to MKV and put the subtitles in the mkv. If handbrake can do it, I'd prefer to use that since I already have it.

• Jail Linux user to directory for FTP login

  I'm planning on using vsftpd to act as a secure ftp server, but I am having difficulty controlling the linux users that will be used as ftp logins. The users are required to be "jailed" into a specific directory (and subdirectories) and have full read/write access. I have tried the following, but to no avail: # Group to store all ftp accounts in. groupadd ftp_accounts # Group for single user, with the same name as the username. groupadd admin_ftp useradd -g admin_ftp -G ftp_accounts admin_ftp chgrp -R ftp_accounts /var/www chmod -R g+w /var/www When I log into FTP using account admin_ftp, I am given the error message: 500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/admin_ftp But didn't I specify the home directory? Extra internets for a guide how to do this specifically for vsftpd :)

• Should a project start with the client or the server?

  Pretty simple question with a complex answer. Should a project start with the client or the server, and why? Where should a single programmer start a client/server project? What are the best practices and what are the reasons behind them? If you can't think of any, what reasons do you use to justify why you would choose to start one before the other? Personally, I'm asking this question because I'm finishing up specs for a project I will be doing for myself on the side for fun. But now that I'm finishing this phase, I'm wondering "ok, now where do I begin?" Since I've never done a project like this by myself, I'm not sure where I should start. In this project, my server will be doing all the heavy lifting and the client will just be sending updates, getting information from the server, and displaying it. But, I don't want that to sway the answer as I'm looking for more of an in depth and less specific answer that would apply to any project I begin in the future.

• Parallelize incremental processing in Tabular #ssas #tabular

  I recently came in a problem trying to improve the parallelism of Tabular processing. As you know, multiple tables can be processed in parallel, whereas the processing of several partitions within the same table cannot be parallelized. When you perform an incremental update by adding only new rows to existing table, what you really do is adding rows to a partition, so adding rows to many tables means adding rows to several partitions. The particular condition you have in this case is that every partition in which you add rows belongs to a different table. Adding rows implies using the ProcessAdd command; its QueryBinding parameter specifies a SQL syntax to read new rows, otherwise the original query specified for the partition will be used, and it could generate duplicated data if you don’t have a dynamic behavior on the SQL side. If you create the required XMLA code manually, you will find that the QueryBinding node that should be part of the ProcessAdd command has to be moved out from ProcessAdd in case you are using a Batch command with more than one Process command (which is the reason why you want to use a single batch: run multiple process operations in parallel!). If you use AMO (Analysis Management Objects) you will find that this combination is not supported, even if you don’t have a syntax error compiling the code, but you might obtain this error at execution time: The syntax for the 'Process' command is incorrect. The 'Bindings' keyword cannot appear under a 'Process' command if the 'Process' command is a part of a 'Batch' command and there are more than one 'Process' commands in the 'Batch' or the 'Batch' command contains any out of line related information. In this case, the 'Bindings' keyword should be a part of the 'Batch' command only. If this is happening to you, the best solution I’ve found is manipulating the XMLA code generated by AMO moving the Binding nodes in the right place. A more detailed description of the issue and the code required to send a correct XMLA batch to Analysis Services is available in my article Parallelize ProcessAdd with AMO. By the way, the same technique (and code) can be used also if you have the same problem in a Multidimensional model.

• Time Machine (archive) of pre-Leopard systems?

  I want to get off an older Mac OS X system permanently. It is an iBook G3, so that has two important characteristics: Power PC, not Intel based. Runs only Tiger, not Leopard. This means, as far as I can tell: Cannot run Time Machine directly. Here's the approach I have been contemplating: Mount the drive in Firewire mode. Back up the drive as a external drive to the Time Machine volume. Disconnect the drive (permanently). However, I'm concerned that this drive will eventually age out, when the Time Machine volume fills up, and the old-system-as-external-drive is gone. Would it be better to do a single backup with another utility, to shared disk?

• Semantic Versioning and splitting apart a library, providing a bundled build

  I've got a nice, fairly popular JavaScript library that is following Semantic Versioning. The current library has a few dependency libraries, which are available either as separate downloads or as part of a single bundled download. I see a need to head down this path further. I want to extract additional, smaller libraries out of the one larger library. Each of these extracted libraries would be available as separate files, or inside of the one bundled build, again. If I go down this path of extracting the libraries, and providing a bundled version of the final code, does this require a full version change in semantic versioning? Would I have to bump from 1.x to 2.x? My first thought it no: I will not change any public API, so I don't have to change the major version number. But then I wonder... well, I am restructuring a lot of things, even though the final API for the bundled version would be the same. Is there a clear answer from semver on something like this? Do I need to bump first, second or third dot? Or something else?

• Is there any way to get tree organisation for Windows 7 file explorer favorites?

  In XP there was a MenuBar called Favorites which seemed to be based on Internet Explorer Favorites. It was fantastic because it allowed for very fast tree style navigation (if set up correctly you could navigate it using first letter keystrokes, so to access a shortcut named "videos" in a folder named "files" was as quick as Alt-A f v) This was removed in Vista (and imo generally regressed the file explorer). This was fine because I never used it, but I'm resigned to eventually embracing the inevitability that is Windows 7. Dealing with a single non-nested list of favourites is pretty painful to me as I have quite a lot of them. Is there a way to make a tree like favorites structure in Windows 7? My fingers are crossed.

• Excel: Conditional Formatting (Highlighting) Values Based on Another Worksheet

  I have a workbook that has two worksheets. The first worksheet is simply a list of the first 78,498 prime numbers in a single column, A1-A78498. The second worksheet has a grid of numbers from 1 to n. The goal is to highlight the cells with prime numbers in the grid by referencing the prime number values in the other worksheet. Is this possible, and if so, how? edit I have named the column with my prime numbers "PRIMES1T". I would like the formula to work for the entire worksheet, regardless of size, but my excel-fu is extremely weak. If at all possible, I would like to be able to enter the formula in the dialog box for conditional formatting (as below): I have tried =NOT(ISNA(MATCH(A:Z,PRIMES1T,0) (only A-Z, but have to start somewhere) with no luck.

• Ping Access to a Nested VM !! Plz Help

  I have a problem in communication between the host and the nested VM.This is my layout. I have installed KVM on host machine having a single nic interface (public ip) running Ubuntu.On top of this,I have VM running Ubuntu.I have installed KVM in this VM too.I then have a VM inside this running a web server. I am able to ping the host from this web server VM and ssh into it.But from host to VM ,ping is being unsuccessful. The VM (named L1hyp) on host was created using libvirt-manager and has IP of 192.168.122.8. The vswitch interface created at host is in default config (NAT-ed). Its IP is 192.168.122.1. Now this VM is also having a vswitch interface which is in default config (NAT-ed).Its IP is 192.168.100.1. The Web server VM is created on top of this L1hyp VM, is having an IP of 192.168.100.186. The Webserver VM uses 192.168.100.1 as its default gw. The L1hyp uses 192.168.122.1 as its default gw. From Host: ping 192.168.122.8 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.122.1 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.100.1 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.100.186 - FAILS Comes up with Destination Host Unreachable From 192.168.122.1. But there is route to 192.168.100.0/24 subnet from host.Ping to 192.168.100.1 succeeds. From Webserver VM: ping 192.168.100.1 - SUCCEEDS ping 192.168.122.1 - SUCCEEDS SSH from web server VM to host succeeds. Can anyone help me out what needs to be modified to have two way communication between the host and Webserver VM at the earliest? I am pondering over this problem for over a week now.

• Windows 7 setup hangs after "Starting Windows..."-screen

  Hi! I'm having some trouble installing Windows 7. I need to install the OS from boot in order to split my C: into two different partitions, as this is not allowed when installing from inside Vista. When I boot up from the install disc, I get the usual "Windows is copying files..."-screen, shortly followed by the "Starting Windows..."-screen with the animated window-logo or whatever. Then it looks as if the installation is about to begin with a blue screen and a cursor I can move around, but here it all stops. Nothing more happens, and the setup seems to hang. Not a single key on my keyboard has any effect, and all I am left to do is to abort and reboot. I've tried to install using two different DVDs (not clones), and the same thing happens every time. What may be causing this, and how may I fix it? Thanks in advance :)
