  • Is there a problem when I call SqlAdapter.Update and at the same time call SqlDataReader.Read

    I have two applications, one updates a single table which has constant number of rows (128 rows) using SqlDataAdapter.Update method , and another application that select from this table periodically using SqlDataReader. sometimes the DataReader returns only 127 rows not 128, and the update application does not remove or even insert any new rows, it just update. I am asking what is the cause of this behaviour?

For eg. deviceId, pollDate, status 1, 2010-95-06 10:53:28, 1 3, 2010-95-06 10:26:28, 1 I tried to run the following query but the distinct only selects the first records, not the latest SELECT DISTINCT deviceId, pollDate, status FROM logs GROUP By deviceId ORDER BY pollDate DESC So, could you please help me to extract the latest entries from the table?   • asp.net mvc & jquery dialog: What approach do I take to add items to a dropdownlist/select list with

    Hi, I am new to MVC and have a grasp of the basic model, but still doing everything with postbacks etc. One aspect of the UI I want to build is to have a drop-down-list of items with a button to add an item to the database and refresh the list. Achieving this with WebForms was straight forward as everything was wrapped in UpdatePanels, but what is the best approach to achieve this using MVC? Some examples show a lot of ajax code in the page something like: $.ajax({...}); I assume doing this using jquery is more code than asp.net webforms, but there is just more code to see doing a "View Source" on a page? But I can't figure out how to create foreign keys on item_id since the source table varies depending on product_id. Should I stick to my original idea?

    I've been developing an SSRS 2005 report (a form letter) that contains two tables. The first "table" uses DataSet "A" to populate address fields on letterhead. The second table uses DataSet "B" to display a basic list of records that pertain to the addressed party. Even though the two tables are within the same page and all PageBreak* properties are set to "False", SSRS renders the report as two pages. How can I force both tables to render in series, without any forced page breaks?

I've looked into sys.columns and the column_id there is merely the order of the columns which changes if the order of the column is changed. I'd like to know if SQL Server maintains a unique id for each column as it does for each table and other objects. And if it does, how can I get that? Thanks.

    I've seen a few instances now where web applications are letting try them out without you having to sign-up (though to save you need to of course). example: trial at http://minutedock.com/ I'm wondering about doing this for my own web app and the fundamental question is whether to store their info into sessions or into a temp user table? The temp user table would allow logging and potentially be less of a hit on the server correct? Is there a best practice here?

  • What are the reasons *not* to use a GUID for a primary key?

    Whenever I design a database I automatically start with an auto-generating GUID primary key for each of my tables (excepting look-up tables) I know I'll never lose sleep over duplicate keys, merging tables, etc. To me it just makes sense philosophically that any given record should be unique across all domains, and that that uniqueness should be represented in a consistent way from table to table. I realize it will never be the most performant option, but putting performance aside, I'd like to know if there are philosophical arguments against this practice?
