  • Drive still usable if Seatools reports errors?

    I have a Seagate 3TB Expansion Desktop drive that was part of a Linux RAID 6 array that failed. I eventually did a zero fill both through Seagate DiscWizard and via Linux dd, neither reported errors. When I ran Seatools now, I got: Short DST - Started 5/31/2014 10:04:36 PM Short DST - Pass 5/31/2014 10:05:37 PM Long Generic - Started 5/31/2014 10:15:19 PM Bad LBA: 518242762 Not Repaired (whole bunch of bad LBAs ommited) Bad LBA: 518715255 Not Repaired Long Generic Aborted 6/1/2014 3:12:18 AM i.e. the short test passed, the long test failed. Unfortunately, the drive is out of warranty, so I can't just RMA it. But I hate tossing a drive that can still be used. So, my questions are: If the zero fill succeeded, and the short test passed, can I still use the whole drive? if not, since I'm using LVM on top of RAID, is there a way to tell either of these to just skip the bad area? If not the above, can I just create partitions before and after the part of the drive with the bad LBAs?

  • Disposing of ContentManager increases memory usage

    I'm trying to wrap my head around how memory management works in XNA 4.0 I've created a screen management test and when I close a screen, the ContentManager created by that screen is unloaded. I have used ANTS Memory Manager to look at how the memory usage is altered when I do this, and it gives me some results which makes me scratch my head. The game starts with loading two textures (435kB and 48,3kB) which puts the usage at about 61MB. Then, when I delete the screen and runs Unload on the ContentManager, the memory usage drops to 56,5MB but instantly after goes up to 64,8MB. Am I doing something wrong or is this usual for XNA games? Do I have to dispose of everything the ContentManager loads seperatly or do I need to do something more to the ContentManager? Thanks in advance!

  • Why can't my Wifi cannot connect or disconnect?

    Wifi connection might drop spontaneously or simply cannot connect. Users on Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.04 have reported experiencing the problem. Running dmesg would show: [210749.637705] wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:23:89:48:3b:b0 by local choice (reason=3) [210778.632244] wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:23:89:48:3b:b0 by local choice (reason=3) [210784.456359] wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:23:89:82:75:70 by local choice (reason=3) which is pretty cryptic. I have tried: kill -9 wpa_supplicant, but wpa_supplicant keeps getting restarted each time. Also, some have suggested that this was caused by enabling power management. However, this might not be true, as the problem has presented itself in a situation where power management was disabled.

  • PCI IDE Controller

    I have a suspicion that the onboard IDE controllers may not be working. Every disk I use to setup this machine reports as damaged (using a win xp installation to test, since it gets to partition setup fastest) So, I popped an IDE PCI Controller card in, to test with, but no drives are showing up in the bios now. I went into setup and changed the BIOS settings to disable onboard IDE1 and 2 to test, but still didn't detect the drives. How do I get that working? It's a standard PC with a 160GB disk and DVD Drive on master and slave channels on a single cable, if that helps. Let me know what else I need to state.

    I have a the folder c:\test\ and two files in it a.txt and b.txtv. I would like to process just the files with extension equal to .txt. If I write this commands cd c:\test for %f in (*.txt) do echo %f I will get the result where both a.txt and b.txtv are listed. The same happens with cd c:\test dir *.txt It seems .txt is the same of .txtv. I have Windows XP SP3 in Italian and the result of ver is Microsoft Windows XP [Versione 5.1.2600]. The same result is from Windows 7 in English Microsoft Windows XP [Version 6.1.7601].

I want to count the number of times that the string Rerun is found within a certain date range. For example A B test1 11/2/2012 test2 11/7/2012 test1_Rerun_1 11/10/2012 test2_Rerun_1 11/16/2012 I am doing a weekly report so want to show how many tests had to be rerun in a particular week. so in the above example: week ending 11/2/12 would return 0 (look for dates 10/26/12 and <=11/2/12 with substring "Rerun") week ending 11/9/12 would return 0 (look for dates 11/2/12 and <= 11/9/12 with substring "Rerun") week ending 11/16/12 would return 2 (look for dates 11/9/12 and <=11/16/12 with substring "Rerun")

  • Oracle Data Protection: How Do You Measure Up? - Part 1

    This is the first installment in a blog series, which examines the results of a recent database protection survey conducted by Database Trends and Applications (DBTA) Magazine. All Oracle IT professionals know that a sound, well-tested backup and recovery strategy plays a foundational role in protecting their Oracle database investments, which in many cases, represent the lifeblood of business operations. But just how common are the data protection strategies used and the challenges faced across various enterprises? In January 2014, Database Trends and Applications Magazine (DBTA), in partnership with Oracle, released the results of its “Oracle Database Management and Data Protection Survey”. Two hundred Oracle IT professionals were interviewed on various aspects of their database backup and recovery strategies, in order to identify the top organizational and operational challenges for protecting Oracle assets. Here are some of the key findings from the survey: The majority of respondents manage backups for tens to hundreds of databases, representing total data volume of 5 to 50TB (14% manage 50 to 200 TB and some up to 5 PB or more). About half of the respondents (48%) use HA technologies such as RAC, Data Guard, or storage mirroring, however these technologies are deployed on only 25% of their databases (or less). This indicates that backups are still the predominant method for database protection among enterprises. Weekly full and daily incremental backups to disk were the most popular strategy, used by 27% of respondents, followed by daily full backups, which are used by 17%. Interestingly, over half of the respondents reported that 10% or less of their databases undergo regular backup testing.  A few key backup and recovery challenges resonated across many of the respondents: Poor performance and impact on productivity (see Figure 1) 38% of respondents indicated that backups are too slow, resulting in prolonged backup windows. In a similar vein, 23% complained that backups degrade the performance of production systems. Lack of continuous protection (see Figure 2) 35% revealed that less than 5% of Oracle data is protected in real-time.  Management complexity 25% stated that recovery operations are too complex. (see Figure 1)  31% reported that backups need constant management. (see Figure 1) 45% changed their backup tools as a result of growing data volumes, while 29% changed tools due to the complexity of the tools themselves.   • Postfix + LDAP + Recipient Delimiter

    I'm trying to get my Postfix and LDAP-backend to accept recipent delimiters (aka address extensions). The rest of the mail system is working fine, but when an email is received with an extension (e.g. [email protected]), it tries to look up "coops+test" against the LDAP service and fails. Obviously this is wrong, and it should strip out the "+test" part. In my postfix config the string being passed to the LDAP service is "%s", per an example line below: accounts_query_filter = (&(objectClass=MailAccount)(mail=%s)(accountActive=TRUE)(delete=FALSE)) Is there a postfix variable which represents the email account minus the extension? I've found a similar post here, but no actual solution.
