• Overhead of Perfmon -> direct to SQL Database

  HI All, First up, I'm a total newb at Performance Monitoring. I'm looking to set up central performance monitoring of some boxes. 2K3 TS ( Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) 2K8 R2 ( XenApp 6 = Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) File Server ( Standard File I/O ) My ultimate aim is to get as many counters/information, without impacting the clients session experience at all. Including counters specific to their sessions. I was thinking it logging directly to a SQL on another server, instead of a two part process of blg file then relog to sql. Would that work ok? Does anyone know the overhead of going straight to SQL from the client? I've searched around a bit, but havent found so much information it can be overwhelming. thanks

• win xp client, win 7 host, only xp drivers

  I have a win 7 64 bit box which has xp on it in a vmware module and also the win7 version. I can use my old usb wifi card under virtual xp as i have the wifi drivers, but apparently the manufacturing company never made any further drivers, nor did it release the source code. Is it possible to get networking between the client and the host, so that my host can browse etc? I thought the microsoft loopback adapter might be the answer but ever example i can find of it's use describes a setup where the host is connected fine and needs to route data to the client as well.

• The RPC services keeps stopping

  For some reason, the RPC service keeps stopping which prevents me from remoting into the server. When this happens I have to manually make my way to the server to restart it as simply starting the service (which does not complain when starting), does not let me remote into the server. I have to restart the server manually to be able to remove into the server again. It seems to be happening a few times a day. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

• Can't access internet using a domain joined computer outside the domain environment

  We had an unused box at work so took it home. It had been joined to the domain and hasn't been unjoined. When I try to use it at home (logging in with a local admin account) I can't seem to access internet pages. It gets correct IP and gateway for the local network and correct DNS servers for the home ADSL connection. I can happily ping the home router (which doesn't have any tricky firewall settings). Can't seem to ping outside, get any DNS to resolve, or (obviously) get any web pages. Is there some problem here with this having been joined to the domain?

• What is the most likely cause to a Blue Screen of Death when the user presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete?

  My wife is experiencing this with her work laptop--she presses Ctrl-Alt-Delete to lock and she gets the BSOD. The first troubleshooting step is usually to "re-image", and it's locked down. So with this question, I am asking whether the behavior is unique enough that someone in the stack-universe knows exactly what this is (something I can tell her to tell her help desk support). Update: help desk said to order more RAM. Alt-tabbing caused the same behavior today. And...she learned that multiple users are affected. I'm not sure I'll be able to clean any additional info that will help w/ troubleshooting. I'll leave the question here for a bit and if an answer ends up being the actual solution, I'll accept it. If not, I think I should probably remove the question (i'll check meta). Update #2.5: The cause appears to be a ctrl-alt-delete keystroke while Sales Team Configurator is open. This can either be to lock the screen (there are workaround in answers already present) or to unlock the screen (no workaround for that).

• Trying To Uninstall Exchange 2007 From Server - Stuck On "Mailbox Role Checks"

  Hi All, I am trying to uninstall Exchange 2007 on a secodary server which has been decommissioned for quite a while (cleaning up after an old Network Admin). The only roll the server had was "Mailbox Role" (the primary server also has this). I have tried uninstalling using Programs and Features GUI tool but that hung on Mailbox Role Checks. I then tried uninstalling Exchange by running Setup.com /mode:uninstall. It has been stuck on 1% of "Mailbox Role Checks" for over 3 hours now. Is there any other options I have for uninstalling Exchange 2007 so the old server can be removed from the Exchange Management console?

• Why no "da-doomp" (disconnect notification sound) sometimes when unplugging wireless mouse receiver?

  Sometimes (maybe one case in 3), when I unplug the wireless mouse receiver on my Sony VGN-CS215J laptop, there is no "da-doomp" sound, even after a minute or two. And if I plug the receiver back in there is no corresponding "du-dump" sound and the mouse is still (immediately) "live". This can happen when the activity light is out and there's nothing obviously going on -- it's not simply that the box is too busy. Other times one gets the expected behavior (and usually I get the correct behavior if I plug the receiver back in a few seconds and then unplug it after a "failure"). The reason this is significant is that if I get no "da-doomp" then the laptop will not sleep properly -- it will go to sleep initially, but then reawaken a few minutes later inside my laptop case and proceed to run the battery down (and no doubt overheat the unit). Any ideas?

• PCs using certain IP addresses cannot ping out

  I'm having a very strange problem which I just can't get past. The way our network is set up, we have 2 locations. The main office with all our PCs, and servers/ We are then joined to a local ISP via microwave link and they provide our internet gateway and house an additional storage server for us. All of the network infrastructure is within our office The problem is... When some PCs (and servers) are assigned IP addresses, they cannot ping the gateway or remote server however the remote server can ping the PC. Most of our internal IP addresses work fine but specific ones (e.g. .29) has this problem all the time. There is nothing else using the ip address and no other network problems. When we switch the IP on the PC, it works fine. Please help, I'm going mad. Thanks, Steve

Trace complete. I'm doing all this via RDP and already tried changing the metric on the persistent rule with devastating consequences! • Intermittent unavailability of an instance in a failover cluster while a standby node is offline in

  Hi everyone. I've got a small failover cluster that I run for the websites my company has. During a RAM upgrade of the standby server, our websites started to show errors about not being able to access the database server. I verified that the instance was indeed up and the server accessable via remote desktop. I also tried a SQL connection to it and it worked, but that might have been after it became available again. This happened on and off until we were able to roll back the hardware changes that were in progress on the standby server and we were able to bring it back up. There was nothing of interest in the SQL Server log, but there is a continous log for the whole duration of the problem, so there was no restart of the SQL Server service. The event viewer is of more interest, since it shows events relating to the heartbeat network card, but I don't know how that would affect the availability of the server, since the standby node is offline. I'd appreciate any help you can provide, it's not very redundant if the setup depends on the standby server being up. :) Here are the event logs from the time of the problem, I include all of them since I can't seem to see what could possibly be the cause of the problem. • Blurry Digital TV Signal in Media Center

  I recently reformatted my box and I reinstalled XP Media Center 2005. My TV signal is perfect if I plug it directly into the tv; and at any rate even shows I recorded previous to the reformat are blury. I have installed all updates (including Media Player 11) and I have installed a codec pack for different file types. I have no clue why it wouldn't display right. When I play the previously recorded shows in VLC they come out perfectly clear... Any ideas?

• how to i lock a Harddrive to a certain drive letter

  i have an external hard drive that i have set to Drive F which on it contains some programs that i have shortcuts on the desktop how i have a second external hard drive which i store my music on which is auto assigned to Drive E, due to someone thinking that Australians love to have f** wings on power plugs for hard drives while power boards have each socket close together i can have both of these hard drives set at the same time my music hard drive i normally only plug up when i sync music to my ipod but on occasion when i unplug my music hard drive and plug my old one back in or at times when i turn on my computer with the music hard drive in, turn off my computer and turn it back on with my old hard drive it's drive letter gets switched to E i get annoyed having to always go into disk management and change the drive letter back to F when this happens so i am wondering if I can lock my hard drive to always be F, if anything else tries to be F it can fail for all i care If there is a batch file i can use that'll go though all the steps of Disk Management to change a drive's letter, that way i can set it up in the startup folder

• DFS keeps constantly replicating almost all files

  We have always had problems with DFS, but recently it has gotten worse (with no apparent reason) to the point it's becoming harmful. We have one master server and DFS connections to other four servers. The four severs don't modify any files, so all replications always propagate from the master to the four other servers. The replicated directory has about 900,000 files. In the recent weeks, every time we check DFS, the DSF backlogs have hundredths of thousand of files. For instance now, the master server now replicates about 700,000 to three of the four servers while the fourth one is fine. Sometimes, only one is off, sometimes two and this time three. Also, it is never the same set of servers. It is inconceivable that something periodically touches all 900,000 files. The biggest change which happens is a scheduled update of several thousand files every six hours. Does anybody have the same problem? Is it a known issue?

  What happens when one server in a DFSR pool maxes out its disk space? I am at the very beginning of my research in DFS/R and this struck me. I plan on implementing this on one server with RAID1 (160GB) and on another server with a RAID5 (500GB). What happens when my 1st server with 160GB disks, run out of space? Will it spill over to the 500GB server? Is it advisable at all to even have the RAID1 server in the DFSR pool? Because the RAID1 server is also my Domain Controller.   Running FSUtil 8Dot3Name Scan /v /s C: gives you a list of potential 8.3 paths in the registry that are referring to your file system, but is there any tool that can actually convert those paths to long paths in the registry? I do understand this could break some programs, but I have backups so I'd be willing to give it a try. (I tried to make a tool like this myself, but it's harder than it looks, because of false positives and all the varieties of ways the path could be embedded.)

• SQL server queries are really slow only on first run

  Somewhat strange problem... when I start my .NET app for the first time after rebooting my machine, the SQL Server queries are really slow... when I pause the debugger, I notice that it's hanging on getting the response from the query. This only happens when connecting to a remote SQL server (2008)... if I connect to one on my local machine, it's fine. Also, if I restart the app, it works fast, even off the remote SQL server, and subsequent runs are also fine. The only problem is when I connect to a remote SQL server for the first time after rebooting my machine. What's more, I have even noticed this same exact behavior with a 3rd party app (also .NET) that also connects to a remote SQL server. Another piece of info... this has only started hapenning since I upgraded my machine from XP to Win7 (64 bit). Also, other developers on my team who upgraded to Win7 are seeing the same behavior (both with the app we're developing and the 3rd party .NET app). • Embedded video is not shown in internet explorer 9 RC or Beta

  In IE 9 RC or in beta, the embedded video is not shown in the web page. I verified the security settings in "internet options". Did not find any issue. Please find the screen shot below. I am able to view the flash videos in Youtube. But, for some reason, in some sites the embedded video is not shown. I don't have this issue with firefox. UPDATE: I am able to see view the embedded video in Admin account. But not able to view it in Standard account.

• moving to a new dedicated server and need advice on the new setup

  I currently have a dedicated server that we have outgrown and we are moving to another server. Our current setup was a 8gb W2008R2 server running a W2008R2 IIS virtual machine using VMWare. We are moving to a 2 cpu 24 gb server with W2012 R2 on Hyper-V. On our virtual machine we are running iis 7.5 and sql server. Sql Server seems to want to eat up all the memory so I had to cap it at 2gb, which doesn't seem sufficient. My question is, when I move the virtual machine to the new server, should I create 2 virtual machines, one for sql server and one for IIS? Or should I leave them both on the same virtual machine? Or even, put the Sql Server on the dedicated server and run the IIS in the vm? I'd like some input on how this should be done, I've not got the experience needed to make the right call. Thanks!
