• Cannot Login To phpMyAdmin

  I'm running a simple LAMP server at home from which I host a personal blog. The server is running Arch Linux, with the latest-and-greatest versions of Apache, MySQL, and PHP. In order to easily maintain the databases, I installed phpMyAdmin. However, I cannot login. If I were to SSH into the server and run mysql -u <user> -p <password>, no errors show up and I'm immediately placed into the MySQL prompt. No problem. However, when I try to log in with phpMyAdmin, using those exact same credentials, nothing happens. No errors, no nothing, I'm just redirected back to the login page. Did I do something wrong? Thanks in advance for any and all answers!

  I am affected by the BUG: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/874241 Otherwise, if like me you have a laptop connected to a second monitor of higher resolution, LIGHTDM at the login stage, mirrors the displays in both screens and assign to them a common resolution (1024X768) in my case, instead of extending the desktop (Primary screen with the greeter and secondary with just a logo as mentioned in the Multiple Monitors UX specifications book for 12.04). • Process for migrating Dropbox to SpiderOak

  I want to move my data from dropbox to SpiderOak. I have 3 computers running dropbox. But I have a poor WAN connection with very limited upload bandwidth. So I thought I do as first step install the dropbox client on my server on the internet an download there my data from dropbox. Then after this I upload/backup my data from this server with a broadband connection to SpiderOak. After the backup is completed I setup the sync between my 3 computers so that they will not have to upload the data again. Will this process will work so that I don't have to upload my data again over my WAN connection at home?

• Anyway I can trick Carbonite into backing up an external hard drive?

  I use carbonite to back up my PC (Windows XP). We were running low on disk space on our home PC (down to 15 gig) so I went out and purchased an external hard drive. However, Carbonite will not back it up. I just want the external drive to be extra disk space. From their FAQ: The current version of Carbonite backs up only the files that reside on permanent hard drives on your computer. It will not back up network drives, external drives, and NAS (network accessed storage) drives. If there are files on a remote drive that you wish to include in your Carbonite backup, you should copy the files to a folder on your local hard drive. If the files are on a shared network drive, you could install Carbonite on the computer on which the network shared drive physically exists, and back the files up directly from that computer. Check back soon for a Carbonite service plan that will allow you to back up your external drives.

• Suspected power supply issue? PC repeatedly whirs for some seconds and then dies.

  I've come home today and switched on the PC I've built a few months ago only for the machine to whir for a few short seconds and then die. It repeats this until I disconnect the power lead. Nothing is output to the screen and this cut out happens very quickly after switching it on. What could this be and how could it be fixed? Is it the power supply? I'm in despair :-( My spec is below, everything is new and was bought and assembled within the last 6months, system has been fantastic until now. • Grandma's Computer - Can a user that belongs only to the "Users" group in Windows XP install malware, virus or IE addons?

  I am trying to figure out if having a user in the "Users" group will be enough to prevent her from install unwanted software. The things that I don't want the user to be able to install are: virus malware bandoo stuff Internet Explorer Addons To put you in context, I am thinking of my grandma's computer, I want her to be able to read all her email stuff and attachments, but without the hassle of needing to reinstall the whole computer every few months. The computer will run Windows XP, with some free antivirus. It will not be part of any domain. It is just a home computer. Linux, I have tried making her use it, but she was already accustomed to Windows and was not really an option to have her re-learn where was the shutdown button. So, are these considerations enough to prevent her installing unwanted software? What other options come to you mind? Thanks

• How do I restore the default applets to Gnome's notification area?

  I have a fresh install of Karmic Koala. In a botched attempt at trying to change my default window manager, I somehow removed at least three applets from the notification area: network manager (nm-applet), volume control (gnome-volume-control-applet), and the battery meter (???). Now if I logout and back in, these applets don't run, but I can start them from the command line. Because it's a fresh install, I completely removed my luser account and home directory. After recreating my account, I was frustrated to find that the applets are still missing and no obvious way to add them back. How can I restore the default configuration?

  I've installed Java 7 on my Mac (10.7.5), but in the terminal there is still java 6. java version "1.6.0_37" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_37-b06-434-11M3909) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.12-b01-434, mixed mode) There will be no problem with the version 6 on terminal, if I always got that errors when I tried to install a java application (LatexDraw): : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextGetCTM: invalid context 0x0 : CGContextSetBaseCTM: invalid context 0x0 The problem is related to instability of java 6 inferred from this link I've read this installed-java-7-on-mac-osx-but-terminal-is-still-using-version-6 and also try to change my Java version by using export JAVA_HOME="/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Home", but in my folder /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions, there is no version 1.7, only versions under 1.6 ??? So, how can I fix this issue?

  Hi everyone, I have a linksys wrt54g router and a windows 7 box at home I'd like to be able to remote desktop into from work. Would it be possible for someone to point me in the right direction on what I need to configure to get this working, both on the router and on the win 7 box? I'm sure there are a lot of little steps involved. Ideally I'd like to set it up so that only my work IP address can get through to the win 7 machine. Thanks very much for any pointers and links!

• Switching DVI socket

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64 with Nvidia 9800 gt and Nvidia driver version 270.41.06 My video card has two DVI sockets, but I only use the single monitor configuration. Now, I think the main DVI socket might be busted, so I want to try to enable the other as the main one, however, I don't know how to achieve that. I tried just plugging the monitor in that socket but it won't auto-detect it (it would have been way too easy to just work). • Access to self created torrent on public tracker

  Not sure if this is the right site to ask this, but here it goes: Let's say I'd like to share a couple of private files with a few friends. The size of these are quite large, so I've figured the best route to distribute these is via torrent. So, on my home PC I create a torrent and start seeding and announce to a public tracker like openbittorrent and publicbt. Now, both of those are public trackers, but they don't seem to have anyway of searching through what is actually being tracked. If I'm only passing around the torrent file to a few friends, whats the chances that someone else will 'randomly' come across the torrent via the public tracker and start leeching?

• Mixing JavaFX, HTML 5, and Bananas with the NetBeans Platform

  The banana in the image below can be dragged. Whenever the banana is dropped, the current date is added to the viewer: What's interesting is that the banana, and the viewer that contains it, is defined in HTML 5, with the help of a JavaScript and CSS file. The HTML 5 file is embedded within the JavaFX browser, while the JavaFX browser is embedded within a NetBeans TopComponent class. The only really interesting thing is how drop events of the banana, which is defined within JavaScript, are communicated back into the Java class. Here's how, i.e., in the Java class, parse the HTML's DOM tree to locate the node of interest and then set a listener on it. (In this particular case, the event listener adds the current date to the InstanceContent which is in the Lookup.) • Sun Java crashing, mostly with jboss

  I'm on Ubuntu 10.10. I keep having problems with Sun Java crashing on me. I mostly have it crashing on my Jboss server, but I've had it crash MANY MANY times running ANT tasks or the IntelliJ IDE. My machine is running 1.6.0_22. Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone know how to keep it from happening? Also: I have tried reinstalling it and I can't use OpenJDK.

• Thunderbird segmentation fault problem

  Hey all, my thunderbird crashes few seconds after it boots up regardless of in safe mode or normal, here is a strace log: http://pastebin.com/tccfYwcD I've searched google, ubuntu forums, and mozilla bug tracker about this problem, but any of found answers did not helped me :/ I've tried: nscd daemon install solutions posted earlier fresh clean instal of ubuntu 10.10 (32b) and thunderbird 3.1.7 from repos on a VM - problem still exists removed all thunderbrid related dot files and dot dirs, and setup profile from beginning Remove thunderbird and related stuff with apt purge, and install tb from official .deb package None of these steps helps me, tb still crashes with segmentation fault :/ I use gmail IMAP account, I've searched and found few other tips on google, but with no success. I've even tried to remove mails from web gui, that came after first notice of problem, still no luck. I'm not using any network fs, and not sharing this account with anyone, and I do not use filesystem or home encryption either just clean install :/ If You guys need some more info for this let me know. Toshiba L500-ST2544 Toshiba L505-ES5034 The Common Specification for both of them are as follows - RAM - 4GB DDR3 Memory HDD - 320 GB Processor - Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor WebCam and Mic - Available HDMI Port - Available Numeric Key Pad - Available Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium Now, the only difference between ST2544 and ES5034 is that, the ST2544 has a maximum of 2 slots with 2 GB in each. So, you can have a max of 4 GB RAM in that. The ES5034 can support 8 GB RAM, so, in a couple of years, if I want to add another 4 GB RAM I will be able to do it. The price for ST2544 is USD 629.00 whereas, the price for a ES5034 is USD685. A difference is USD 55.00 (not a major amount, but still something extra). Is it worthwhile going for the ES5034? Which Windows Operating System supports 8 GB of RAM?

  Since the Chromium PPA is no longer maintained, for those of us preferring to use chromium over chrome, we have two options: Build and Install from Source Download either 'beta' or daily builds (in a zip file) Unfortunately for me, option 1 is overly complicated. I know how to compile most any other applications in Ubuntu but I've never been able to get chromium to build correctly. I am currently using option 2. In Chromium I have the Chromium Updater installed (http://goo.gl/ffAMy). This gives me quick access to the most recent 64bit versions. Once downloaded, I install to /home/myuser/opt/chrome-linux. From this directory I can run the chrome binary. It works perfectly except for the fact that I cannot get it to act as my default browser. I've tried, as root, installing the binary in /opt/chrome-linux/ with a symbolic link to the 'chrome' binary in /usr/bin. Unfortunately, this doesn't work as a non root user. So my question is - How do I properly install a downloaded chromium zip build so tht it's listed as an option for the default browser?

• Free alternatives to vSphere for ESXi (if one exists)

  Dear All, Am feeling a touch confused and overwhemled. From what I gather even though ESXi is free I will only be able to manage my VMs (create or power on etc) for 60 days unless I buy a licence for vSphere. This is somewhat frustrating. As I am looking for a home lab to practice for various certs I was hoping to also practice using vmware stuff to do so. Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Is there a free built in web interface like there was with VMServer or is the only option vSphere (which is massively out of my price range)? • MacBook repeatedly disconnects from Wi-Fi

  I have an early 2008-model MacBook (2.4 GHz). The Wi-Fi router I have at home is a Linksys WRT54GX2 that I have had for a few years. My MacBook has recently started disconnecting from the router every few minutes, which is rather annoying. I can reconnect again without having to restart the router or anything, as it seems that the MacBook is just dropping the connection. I have tried changing the channel on the router, and upgrading the laptop from Leopard to Snow Leopard made no difference either. I'm only about six feet from the Linksys device, so distance isn't an issue. This only happens with the Linksys router, while I can use the local library's open network without any issues. • Windows 7 file sharing password protecting or making stuff available to just me

  Even with the new Homegroup feature I'm still finding the way Windows deals with folder sharing utterly baffling. Here's what I want to do. I have two computers, a PC Desktop and a laptop. I also live in a shared flat with other computer users. I have set up a Homegroup and a Workgroup on the desktop and joined them on the laptop and in the home group I have shared video, music and pictures. This is so that anyone on the network can view pictures and listen to music etc. But I want my Documents folder from my desktop to only be available to me on my laptop and not to anyone else that may be on the network. The Homegroup only allows (from what I can gather from the baffling array of options) sharing with everyone or no one. Is it possible to only allow the laptop to access the documents folder on the desktop? The user name and password are the same on both computers.

• Windows 7 - Remote Desktop - multiple credentials

  Hi, My home network consists of a couple XP machines and a windows 7 box. One of the XP boxes is like a shared server accessed via Remote Desktop. I have an account on there and my gf has another. Previously I was able to save RDC shortcuts to this shared server including credentials. So in order to access the server from a computer on the network, i just needed to open the shortcut. I thus would have two shortcuts, one for my account and one for my gf's. In windows 7, it seems to store credentials for a box based on machine name. i.e. i can only store one set of credentials per machine name. This seems incredibly stupid so my question is: In windows 7, is there some way to have RDC shortcuts that use different credentials to login to the same target box? thanks

• include all vim files in a folder

  For my .bashrc I have a lot of small snippet files in .config/bash, like 10-prompt.sh and so on. In my actual .bashrc, I just have the following: configdir="$HOME/.config/bash" for file in "$configdir"/*.sh do source "$file" done I'd like to do the same for my .vimrc, but I am not that confident in VimL that I could write that. How would the snippet for .vimrc look like that includes all the snippets in a given subfolder? Ideally, I'd like to make a .vim/rc/ folder where I can put my snippets into.
