• Wozu eigentlich Oracle Linux?

  Zur Abwechslung gibt es heute mal einen kürzeren Artikel, und zwar zum Thema "Oracle Linux". Der eine oder andere mag sich vielleicht schon mal gefragt haben, warum man sich mit diesem "Red Hat Klon" überhaupt auseinandersetzen sollte. Gibt es neben dem "Support aus einer Hand"-Argument noch andere Gründe, warum sich Kunden dafür entscheiden, Oracle Linux einzusetzen? Diese und ähnliche Fragen hat eine kürzlich erschienene IDC-Studie beleuchtet. Sie trägt den Titel: "Oracle Linux Takes Its Place in the Operating Systems Market". Interessant ist vor allem ein konkretes Kundenbeispiel am Ende der Studie. Da es thematisch gerade passt sei zum Schluss noch ein kleiner Hinweis in eigener Sache erlaubt:Viele der in dem Paper erwähnten Aspekte und Features (wie z.B. • How do I install an equalizer in Rhythmbox?

  Previous I have never used rhythmbox by default because it seemed to be lacking in features to me. Just my personal opinion. With rhythmbox back in 12.04 will ubuntu give it some attention to give it some usability one thing that was majorly missing on my last use of rhythmbox was an equalizer which is the most basic of requirements for an audio player let alone a preamp. I have searched and found that on the rhythmbox website the plugin is available but in the plugins menu of rhythmbox it is not there. I searched google and there are many guides from 2009 trying to install the equalizer. there is nothing recent and one would assume this would be a default plugin, there is no point after all searching for cover art if your music doesn't sound right. How can I easily install the equalizer in 12.04?

  We are currently hiring a junior developer to help me out, as I have more projects than I can currently manage. I have never hired anyone who wasn't a friend or at least an acquaintance. I have a phone interview with the only applicant that actually stood out to me (on paper), but I have never done this before. Our projects are all high scalability, data intensive web applications that process millions of transactions an hour, across multiple servers and clients. To be language/stack specific, we use ASP.Net MVC2, WebForms and C# 4, MSSQL 2008 R2, all running atop Windows Server 2008 R2 What should I ask him? How should I structure the phone call?

• Oracle SQL Developer v3.2.1 Now Available

  Oracle SQL Developer version 3.2.1 is now available. I recommend that everyone now upgrade to this release. It features more than 200 bug fixes, tweaks, and polish applied to the 3.2 edition. The high profile bug fixes submitted by customers and users on our forums are listed in all their glory for your review. I want to highlight a few of the changes though, as I recognize many of you lack the time and/or patience to ‘read the docs.’ That would include me, which is why I enjoy writing these kinds of blog posts. I’m lazy – just like you! No more artificial line breaks between CREATE OR REPLACE and your PL/SQL In versions 3.2 and older, when you pull up your stored procedural objects in our editor, you would see a line break inserted between the CREATE OR REPLACE and then the body of your code. In version 3.2.1, we have removed the line break. 3.1 3.2.1 Trivia Did You Know? The database doesn’t store the ‘CREATE’ or ‘CREATE OR REPLACE’ bit of your PL/SQL code in the database. If we look at the USER_SOURCE view, we can see that the code begins with the object name. So the CREATE OR REPLACE bit is ‘artificial’ The intent is to give you the code necessary to recreate your object – and have it ‘compile’ into the database. We pretty much HAVE to add the ‘CREATE OR REPLACE.’ From now on it will appear inline with the first line of your code. Exporting Tables & Views When exporting data from your tables or views, previous versions of SQL Developer presented a 3 step wizard. It allows you to choose your columns and apply data filters for what is exported. This was kind of redundant. The grids already allowed you to select your columns and apply filters. Wouldn’t it be more intuitive AND efficient to just make the grids behave in a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) fashion? In version 3.2.1, that is exactly what will happen. The wizard now only has two steps and the grid will export the data and columns as defined in the visible grid. Let the grid properties define what is actually exported! And sometimes I want to send multiple objects to Excel – to a single Excel file that is. In version 3.2.1 you can now do that. Let’s export the bulk of the HR schema to Excel, with each table going to it’s own workbook in the same worksheet. Select many tables, put them in in a single Excel worksheet If you try this in previous versions of SQL Developer it will just write the first table to the Excel file. This is one of the bugs we addressed in v3.2.1. Here is what the output Excel file looks like now: Many tables - Many workbooks in an Excel Worksheet I have a sneaky suspicion that this will be a frequently used feature going forward. Excel seems to be the cornerstone of many of our popular features. Imagine that!

• Switch interface implementation using configuration

  We want to allow the same core service to be either fully implemented or, as other option, to be a proxy toward a client legacy system (via a WSDL for example). In that way, we have both implementation (proxy & full) and we switch which one to use in the configuration of the app. So in a nutshell, Some desired features: Two different implementation (proxy, full) instead of one implementation with a switch inside Switch implementation using configuration: dependency injection? reflection? Nice-to-have: the packaged delivered to the client doesn’t have to change depending on the choice between proxy or full Nice-to-have: Client can develop their custom implementation of the Core Interface and configure the applciation to use that one With this background, the question is: What alternatives we have to choose one implementation or other of an interface just changing configuration? • User is trying to leave! Set at-least confirm alert on browser(tab) close event!!

  This is something that might be annoying or irritating for end user. Obviously, It's impossible to prevent end user from closing the/any browser. Just think of this if it becomes possible!!!. That will be a horrible web world where everytime you will be attacked by sites and they will not allow to close your browser until you confirm your shopping cart and do the payment. LOL:) You need to open the task manager and might have to kill the running browser exe processes.Anyways; Jokes apart, but I have one situation where I need to alert/confirm from the user in any anyway when they try to close the browser or change the url. Think of this: You are creating a single page intranet asp.net application where your employee can enter/select their TDS/Investment Declarations and you wish to at-least ALERT/CONFIRM them if they are attempting to:[1] Close the Browser[2] Close the Browser Tab[3] Attempt to go some other site by Changing the urlwithout completing/freezing their declaration.So, Finally requirement is clear. I need to alert/confirm the user what he is going to do on above bulleted events. I am going to use window.onbeforeunload event to set the javascript confirm alert box to appear.    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">        window.onbeforeunload = confirmExit;        function confirmExit() {            return "You are about to exit the system before freezing your declaration! If you leave now and never return to freeze your declaration; then they will not go into effect and you may lose tax deduction, Are you sure you want to leave now?";        }    </script>See! you are halfway done!. So, every time browser unloads the page, above confirm alert causes to appear on front of user like below:By saying here "every time browser unloads the page"; I mean to say that whenever page loads or postback happens the browser onbeforeunload event will be executed. So, event a button submit or a link submit which causes page to postback would tend to execute the browser onbeforeunload event to fire!So, now the hurdle is how can we prevent the alert "Not to show when page is being postback" via any button/link submit? • Why does Clojure neglect the uniform access principle?

  My background is Ruby, C#, JavaScript and Java. And now I'm learning Clojure. What makes me feel uncomfortable about the later is that idiomatic Clojure seems to neglect the Uniform access principle (wiki, c2) and thus to a certain degree encapsulation as well by suggesting to use maps instead of some sort of "structures" or "classes". It feels like step back. So a couple of questions, if anyone informed: Which other design decisions/concerns it conflicted with and why it was considered less important? Did you have the same concern as well and how it end up when you switched from a language supporting UAP by default (Ruby, Eiffel, Python, C#) to Clojure?

• Why Ubuntu Server asks to insert a CD-ROM when installed from PXE?

  I set up a PXE server which hosts both Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server. Ubuntu Desktop is installed successfully from PXE.   One of the new features is URL-based navigation which is useful for creating intranet links or auto-generating email links (such as from workflow systems, etc). For IIS 6 and earlier, the format is as follows: http://machine/drm-client/Logon.aspx? app=<appname>&action=go&ver=<version name>&hier=<hier name>&node=<node name> Just replace the fields with their appropriate values (URL-encoded of course). <node name> is optional. If provided it will open the hierarchy and expand directly to the target node. Otherwise the hierarchy is opened to the top node. Note that if the specified version is not loaded it will be loaded automatically.

I've spent a lot of time looking into Liferay, as I don't have any experience in building CMSs, and want to either use it, or get ideas of how to build a decent system. The time line is short, requirements are vague, yada yada Is Liferay a good technology to work with when showing the client (who may be very low on computer expertise) a user interface to build a site? The thing is, I want the power and flexibility to avoid the learning curve in building a CMS like product, but I don't want to waste time learning a new technology only to find its over-kill, or can't do the simple - but uncommon and unimplemented - things that we are asked to add as features Ideally I'd like to provide multiple web interfaces to the core API to build the sites - one that is very powerful, and another that is watered down and easy to use.

• Slot Machine Pay Out

  I have done a lot of research into random number generators for slot machines, reel stop calculations and how to physically give the user a good chance on winning. What I can't figure out is how to properly insure that the machine is going to have a payout rating of (lets say) 95%. So, I have a reel set up wit 22 spaces on it. Filled with 16 different symbols. When I get my random number, mod divide it by 64 and get the remainder, I hop over to a loop up table to see how the virtual stop relates to the reel position. Now that I have how the reels are going to stop, do I make sure the payout ratio is correct? For every dollar they put in, how to I make sure the machine will pay out .95 cents? Thanks for the ideas. I am working in actionscript, if that helps with the language issues, but in general I am just looking for theory.
