• Programming Environment that runs directly on the iPhone or iPad?

  Is there a development environment that runs directly on an the iPhone OS? I will be without access to a computer/internet for some time, but will have the use of an iPad (WiFi, jailbroken). Do you know of any way to dabble with programming directly on the device. Since apple is commit to not let it happen, I assume I will have to find such an environment on cydia (or a 'similar' site). I don't seem to be able to find the correct google incantations (search terms) to locate such a package.

• So do programming languages get updated regularly like everyday applications or are they just x.0 re

  I was wondering if programming languages and frameworks get updated in small increments or are they just x.0 releases? And if they do how do you keep up on all the changes in every update? I am specifically interested in Objective-C and Cocoa and CocoaTouch. I'm learning from books and online PDF's etc, but often they are at best a few years old. I just would like to know if there have been any changes etc. that should concern me and even if not, inevitably there will be, so where can I look out for them?

• What are the names of network interfaces on the Motorola CLIQ?

  The network interfaces on Android interfaces are listed as directories in the file system in /sys/class/net/. For most Android devices the network interface for gprs traffic is called rmnet0 and for Wi-Fi it's usually eth0 or tiwlan0. I suspect that the cell interface for the Motorola CLIQ is rmnet0, but I would like to have this confirmed + know the name of the Wi-Fi interface. Also it would be good to know the device id for this model. This is the value available as android.os.Build.DEVICE in the Java SDK. (E.g. T-Mobile G1 uses dream, Samsung Galaxy uses GT-I7500, and Motorolda Droid uses sholes.)

• How to activate nVidia cards programmatically on new MacBookPros for CUDA programming?

  The new MacBookPros come with two graphic adapters, the Intel HD Graphics, and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M. OS X switches back and forth between them, depending on the workload, detection of an external monitor, or activation of Rosetta. I want to get my feet wet with CUDA programming, and unfortunately the CUDA SDK doesn't seem to take care of this back-and-forth switching. When Intel is active, no CUDA device gets detected, and when the NVidia card is active, it gets detected. So my current work-around is to use the little tool gfxCardStatus (http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus/) to force the card on or off, just as I need it, but that's not satisfactory. Does anybody here know what the Apple-blessed, Apple-recommended way is to (1) detect the presence of a CUDA card, (2) to activate this card when present?

  Hello, World.. I'm a web developer mostly working in Ruby and C#.. I wanna learn a low level language so i dont look like an ass infront of my (computer science expert) boss. Ive heard a lot of purist buzz about how assembly language is the only way to learn how computers actually work, but on the other hand C would probably be more useful as a language rather than just for theory. So my question is.. Would Learning C teach me enough computer science theory / low level programming to not look like a common dandy (complete tool)? Thanks! Daniel

• Is using Natural Join or Implicit column names not a good practice when writing SQL in a programming

  When we use Natural Join, we are joining the tables when both table have the same column names. But what if we write it in PHP and then the DBA add some more fields to both tables, then the Natural Join can break? The same goes for Insert, if we do a insert into gifts values (NULL, "chocolate", "choco.jpg", now()); then it will break the code as well as contaminating the table when the DBA adds some fields to the table (example as column 2 or 3). So it is always best to spell out the column names when the SQL statements are written inside a programming language and stored in a file in a big project.

Every day I feel I solve something that I'll surely hit again in a not so distant future, but by then I most certainly will have forgotten about the previous solution I came up with. So I need to blog it down, quick and dirty, for my own documentation and memory's sake. Must be easy to set up and use. Must handle code syntax and highlighting gracefully for a number of languages, but mainly C# and C++. Must be PHP-based, because that's what my host supplies. I know and have used WordPress (not for code, though), but is it really what I want or need?

  Firstly, I would like to say I think StackOverflow is a really great website, not just from a content perspective, but from a design perspective. The UI is designed in a way that makes it easy to use and the points are great incentives to be a productive part of the community. I was wondering, is there a part of the site, or maybe is there plans to make a new site, which is not programming driven. Like a general knowledge site but with StackOverflow as the engine. I use sites like Yahoo Answer! and they can be useful. But I think the main difference between Stack Overflow and Yahoo Answer is that Yahoo Answer encourages content indiscriminately, whereas Stack Overflow is disciplined enough that it only encourages content that are helpful or useful. I find it great that I can load up a question and the best answer pops up immediately, and the bad answers are voted down. Thanks

  In programming, as many professions, there are mistakes you'll make now that you may not have made as a beginner. For instance, consider pointers: In C++, is there any difference between arrays and pointers? The beginner will say yes, they are two completely different concepts, and treat them as such. The intermediate programmer (having learned that arrays are pointers internally) will tell you no, they are the same thing, and may miss some crucial bugs by interchanging them all willy-nilly. The expert, however, will again say they are different things (ex. see here or here). What other questions/mistakes are like this?

  Suppose you have a book on a programming language and are trying to learn the language. You want to write the code that is given in the book in so you can learn by example while you read. But you hate holding the book on your lap and trying to type at the same time. I find that extremely uncomfortable. Someone recommended that I try using a music stand, but I figured the placement of that would be problematic since I would have to turn my head too much. Does anyone know of a good book holder that they can recommend that can sit next to your monitor so you can look at it while you type? Specifically, I am looking for one that can handle about a 600 page paperback book.

• What good timesheet should and shouldn't have for a small (non programming) 50 people company?

  I'm sure most people here had to fill at least one time sheet in their life that made their life miserable, hell it's even the worst time taker ever especially after you have to fill it in hurry. I will be developing some simple TimeSheet application for a small company of 50 people (non programming related, it's actually 4 companies working together) and would like it to be user friendly and as less disturbing as possible. So what in your opinion makes it a good timesheet (lack of it doesn't count :p), what data it should store? Should be only hours per day with possibility to choose project, company and simple overview what you have worked on like: Day 1, 3:00, 'Company 1', 'Project5', 'Name', Short Overview Day 1, 5:00, 'Company 2', 'Project6', 'Name', Short Overview Or should it gather more data? Would it be realy bad if it were an WinForms application considering that I don't know ASP.NET or any other web based language? I would be deploying it using ClickOnce or so.

  I'm a teacher(instructor) of CS in the university. The course is based on Cormen and Knuth and students program algorithms in C++. But sometimes it is good to show how an algorithm works or just a result of task through GUI. Also in my opinion it's very imporant to be able to write full programs. They will have courses concerning GUI but a three years, later, in fact, before graduatuion. I think that they should be able to write simple GUI applications earlier. So I want to teach them it. How do you think, what is more useful for them to learn: programming GUI with QT or writing GUI in C# and calling unmanaged C++ library?

  Hi, I am using a web application to read the excel file and uploading it in the database. I have deployed the application in the server.I am using windows service 2003 as the server.I am able to read the excel file only if i set the set the security settings to "network service" for the microsoft excel application in the control panel -- administrative tools -- componetn service -- computer -- My computer -- DCOM config -- microsoft excel application . Why is it so . There are also other applications running in the server. 1) Doing like this will create any issue ? 2) Why do we need to do it ? 3) Is there any alternative way to do it ? 4) What are we doing actually by providing network service access ? The vast majority of my development is in Microsoft .NET / C# on mobile devices (WinMo and tablets) as well as Silverlight and ASP.NET. I would like the name to be something in that area although I am open other technologies, etc. I have not seen him yet. I assume he is typical Border Collie colored - black/white.   I'm one of those people who can't get anything done without a to-do list. If it isn't on the list it doesn't exist. Notepad Method: When I'm programming I've been keeping notepad open with a list of to-do's for my current project. I'll constantly re-arrange these based off priority and I cross them off and move them to the completed section when I'm finished with that particular task. • Can I override DropLocation target to avoid network latency?

  In Team Build 2008, the Drop Location for a build is no longer specified in the .proj file, and instead is stored in the database and maintained in the GUI tool. The GUI tool only accepts a network path as a drop location (i.e. \\server\share) and will not accept a local path. Our build server also hosts the dropped files, so it seems that forcing a file copy operation to go through the network share introduces a lot of lag time when copying a large number of files. I would like to override this feature so that I can specify a local directory for drop location, but I can't figure out how.

• The difference between the 'Local System' account and the 'Network Service' account?

  I have written a Windows service that spawns a separate process. This process creates a COM object. If the service runs under the 'Local System' account everything works fine, but if the service runs under the 'Network Service' account, the external process starts up but it fails to create the COM object. The error returned from the COM object creation is not a standard COM error (I think it's specific to the COM object being created). So, how do I determine how the two accounts, 'Local System' and 'Network Service' differ? These built-in accounts seem very mysterious and nobody seems to know much about them.

• Routing table with two NIC adapters in libvirt/KVM

  I created a virtual NAT network (192.168.100.0/24 network) in my libvirt and new guest with two interfaces - one in this network, one as bridged (10.34.1.0/24 network) to the local LAN. The reason for that is I need to have my own virtual network for my DHCP/TFTP/DNS testing and still want to access my guest externally from my LAN. On both networks I have working DHCP, both giving them IP addresses. When I setup NAT port forwarding (e.g. for ssh), I can connect to the eth0 (virtual network), everything is fine. But when I try to access the eth1 via bridged interface, I have no response. I guess I have problem with my routing table - outgoing packets are routed to the virtual NAT network (which has access to the machine I am connecting from - I can ping it). But I am not sure if this setup is correct. I think I'll have to use sockets for the connections right? How will a laptop notice other laptops in its local network or the other way around?   Hi All, I'm sure we've all been exposed over the past few days to the delights of the vuvuzela (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8738604.stm). In an attempt to mask the waspish 'parp' from our living rooms, tv sound engineers are devising all sorts of filters to try and 'calm' the abhoration :). some tho say that it simply 'adds to the ambience' and that masking it out would be a denial of its 'additive' character. Now, on a programming related front, have you had to mask any extraneous 'noise' in a piece of work that you've picked up from someone else (or perhaps even your own!!)?? If so how 'inspired' was your remedy and how did you creatively 'reverse' it out once the noise had subsided and/or the pitch changed. :) tongue firmly in cheek... jim

• Love coding but offered a server/network job -- any advice?

  I really enjoy software development. I've done it for going on 3 years now full-time for a small company and still find it interesting and exciting. I haven't had much server/network experience but have an opportunity to work for a large IT company dealing with server setups, configurations, maintenance and some networking work as well. The thing is, I'm not sure whether to accept. If I were to take this, it would have relatively little if any coding and I'm guessing would start me down a career path away from coding. The only thing is the company is large enough and has a coding division so I guess in a few years I could transition back to the software side of things if I wanted, but I'm just not sure whether I would enjoy the server/network side of things. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Especially if you have had a similar situation occur. Thanks!
