• grub does not display activity during boot

  Prior to Ubuntu 11.04 I could configure grub so that after the menu is displayed and the system is booting detail of the boot activity appears. Now there's just a blank screen between the menu and gdm login. How do I coax Ubuntu 11.04 to display the boot activity? Dale E. • Ubuntu 12.10 stopped during booting

  Good morning, I'm very new to Ubuntu. I decided to change to Ububtu (12.10) for my old laptop (Compaq Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP 2800+) that previously used Windows XP. After the installation, the PC restarted but, after a certain activity of the HDD stopped. Menwhile, no information from the screen (blank). Then I retried in recovery mode and the activity stopped at a certain point. I write the last two lines: [ 11.020922] pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: [ 11.021676] excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff I don't know how to solve the problem. • Removal of libsound2 file causes graphics loss

  I was trying to install skype on ubuntu 12.10 desktop. but it was giving some error related to libsound2:i386 file. to overcome this problem i removed file libsound2 thinking that will install it later. but it removes all the graphics from my system. after removal of the file system started to give error that system is running in low graphics mode. I tried to install libsound2 file again but couldn't. After it i have upgraded the release of my ubuntu version using command do-release-upgrade think that it will install the missing file. But still there are no graphics on the system. I am using Dell Inspiron 15 . Please help me to tell that how can i get the graphics of system back.

• SU, SUDO and Upgrade problem

  i have a big problem with my Ubuntu PC. When i try sometigng need sudo or su, nothing is working and the OS Upgrade too, when i write the root password to the su command i have a "autentication error", same in the upgrades and when i try the sudo command to install something i don't have error message and nothing happen. I was tring to make samba work when all goes wrong. Some help!? Thanks! Edit SSH connection refused and connection closed if i try to login from secondary PC I can't access recovery mode... With the autologin i can access the system, if i logout and try to login again return the autentication error

• Installation taking a very long time

  I am installing Ubuntu 14.04(32-bit) on my laptop (Compaq Presario V2000), and after about 7 hours, it is still in Congiguring bcmwl-kernel-source (i386) mode. The messages I read are as follows: ubuntu kernel: [22814.858163] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPC0.LPC0.ACAD: ACPI_NOTIFY_BUS_CHECK event: unsupported with the numbers in the square brackets increasing. I have had Windows XP professional on this laptop, and I am erasing it. I am not sure if I should turn off the laptop, and start all over again. About 4 years ago I installed Ubuntu on this laptop, and that was very fast. The only problem I encountered was my wireless, and could not make it to work, and switched back to Windows. I appreciate any comments regarding this installation taking such a long time.

• How to convincing Programmers that 'being in the zone' [coding] isn't always beneficial for the project?

  In this book review: http://books.slashdot.org/story/11/06/13/1251216/Book-Review-The-Clean-Coder?utm_source=slashdot&utm_medium=twitter Chapter 4 talks about the coding process itself. One of the hardest statements the book makes here is to stay out of "the zone" when coding. Bob asserts that you lose parts of the big picture when you go down to that level. While I may struggle with that assertion, I do agree with his next statement that debugging time is expensive, so you should avoid having to do debugger-driven development whenever possible. He finishes the chapter with examples of pacing yourself (walking away, taking a shower) and how to deal with being late on your projects (remembering that hope is not a plan, and being clear about the impact of overtime) along with a reminder that it is good to both give and receive help, whether it be small questions or mentoring others. they talk about how 'being in the zone' - can actually be detrimental to the project. How do you convince your team members that this is the case?

• Customizing UPK outputs (Part 2 - Player)

  There are a few things that can be done to give the Player output a personalized look to match your corporate branding. In my previous post, I talked about changing the logo. In addition to the logo, you can change the graphic in the heading, button colors, border colors and many other items. Prior to making any customizations, I strongly recommend making a copy of the existing Player style. This will give you a backup in case things go wrong. I'd also recommend that you create your own brand. This way, when you install the newest updates from us, your brand will remain intact. Creating your own brand is pretty easy. Make sure you have modify permissions on the publishing styles directory, if you are using a multi-user installation. Under the Publishing/Styles folder, create a new folder with your company name. Copy all the publishing styles from the UPK folder to your newly created folder. Now, when you go through the Publishing wizard, you will have two categories to choose from: the UPK category or your custom category. Now, for updating the Player output. First, the graphic that appears on the right hand side of the Player. If you're using a multi-user installation, check out the player style from your custom brand. Open the player style. Open the img folder. The file named "banner_image.png" represents the graphic that appears on the right hand side of the player. It is currently sized at 425 x 54. Try to keep your graphic about the same size. Rename your graphic file to be "banner_image.png", and drag it into the img folder. Save the package. Check in the package if you are in a multi-user installation. You've just updated the banner heading! Next, let's work on updating some of the other colors in the player. All the customizable areas are located in the skin.css file which is in the root of the Player style. Many of our customers update the colors to match their own theme. You don't have to be a programmer to make these changes, honest. :) To change the colors in the player: Make a copy of the original skin.css file. (This is to make sure you have a working version to revert to, in case something goes wrong.) Open the skin.css file from the Player package. You can edit it using Notepad. Make the desired changes. Save the file. Save the package. Publish to view your new changes. When you open the skin.css, you will see groupings like this: .headerDivbar { height: 21px; background-color: #CDE2FD; } Change the value of the background-color to the color of your choice. Note that you cannot use "red" as a color, but rather you should enter the hexadecimal color code. If you don't know the color code, search the web for "hexadecimal colors" and you'll find many sites to provide the information. Here are a few of the variables that you can update. Heading: .headerDivbar -this changes the color of the banner that appears under the graphic Button colors: .navCellOn - changes the color of the mode buttons when your mouse is hovering on them. .navCellOff - changes the color of the mode buttons when the mouse is not over them Lines: .thorizontal - this is the color of the horizontal lines surrounding the outline .tvertical - this is the color of the vertical lines on the left and right margin in the outline. .tsep - this is the color of the line that separates the outline from the content area Search frame: .tocSearchColor - this is the color of the search area .tocFrameText - this is the background color of the TOC tree. Hint: If you want to try out the changes prior to updating the style, you can update the skin.css in some content you've already published for the player (it's located in the css folder of the player package). This way, you can immediately see the changes without going through publishing. Once you're happy with the changes, update the skin.css in player style. Want to customize more? Refer to the "Customizing the Player" section of the Content Development manual for more details on all the options in the skin.css that can be changed, and pictures of what each variable controls.   So i was trying to remaster a ubuntu mini remix using the tool called 'customizer'. my goal is to create a version with a gui capable of networking too. i don't like all the tomboy notes, evolution and unity stuff that natty has came with. http://www.ubuntu-mini-remix.org/ http://u-customizer.sourceforge.net/ the packages i installed are just xorg and gnome-desktop-environment apt-get --no-install-recommends xorg gnome-desktop-environment well it worked quite well. i just want to ask if there are any minimum packages other that the two mentioned above? the lubuntu-desktop is great too. but i want gnome more coz it has a wider community (imo) oh and please don't refer me to LFS .im still too noob for that xD

  So we wish to host some pages on a new server w/ apache2, and embed some of our old content & functionality from another server w/ lighttpd in an iframe. I'm looking at this configuration from the apache docs (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/vhosts/examples.html#page-header) under "Using Virtual_host and mod_proxy" together. <VirtualHost *:*> ProxyPreserveHost On ProxyPass / http://192.168.111.2/ ProxyPassReverse / http://192.168.111.2/ ServerName hostname.example.com </VirtualHost> The only issue is that I want to proxy only on a subdomain, or even better, if I can keep the top domain and proxy only if the url contains a particular path ie. "/myprocess.php". So in essence the DNS will point to the apache2 as the "master router".

• The perils of double-dash comments [T-SQL]

  I was checking my Twitter feed on my way in to work this morning and was alerted to an interesting blog post by Valentino Vranken that highlights a problem regarding the OLE DB Source in SSIS. In short, using double-dash comments in SQL statements within the OLE DB Source can cause unexpected results. It really is quite an important read if you’re developing SSIS packages so head over to SSIS OLE DB Source, Parameters And Comments: A Dangerous Mix! and be educated. Note that the problem is solved in SSIS2012 and Valentino explains exactly why. If reading Valentino’s post has switched your brain into “learn mode” perhaps also check out my post SSIS: SELECT *... or select from a dropdown in an OLE DB Source component? which highlights another issue to be aware of when using the OLE DB Source. • set installer background / not able to run early_command in custom preseed file (precise)

  I have a custom preseed file for a Precise Live CD (which is well loaded on boot, I checked syslog for that). My initial problem is that when booting in install mode (default behavior for a Live CD), ubiquity runs X with a default wallpaper which is hardcoded to /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png in Ubiquity code. So my idea was to run early_command (https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/installation-guide/i386/preseed-advanced.html) to copy my custom wallpaper over /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png. Assuming my custom wallpaper allready resides on the rootfs in /usr/share/backgrounds. But... It seems the early_command never runs (and I'm sure the preseed file is taken into account) Here is what I have added to my preseed file: d-i preseed/early_command string cp /usr/share/backgrounds/mywallpaper-defaults.jpg /usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png Even this one is never run: d-i preseed/early_command string /usr/bin/touch /tmp/testearly Thanks for helping !!

• Architecture of interaction modes ("paint tools") for a 3D paint program

  We are developing a Qt-based application to navigate through and paint on a volume treated as a 3D pixel graphic. The layout of the app consists of three orthogonal slice views on which the user may paint stuff like dots, circles etc. and also erase already painted pixels. Think of a 3D Gimp or MS Paint. How would you design the the architecture for the different interaction modes (i.e. paint tools)? My idea is: use the MVC pattern have a separate controler for every interaction mode install an event filter on all three slice views to collect all incoming user interaction events (mouse, keyboard) redirect the events to the currently active interaction controler I would appreciate critical comments on that idea.

• Screencast several application windows at once in Microsoft Windows

  I have several (20+) applications running on a Microsoft Windows PC. What I would like is a solution that allows me to broadcast the window of each application in a webpage, in readonly mode (there's no need for the users to interact with it). This should work even if the application is in the background, seeing that there's no way to fit all of them on the screen. I performed very extensive searching, from simple screencasting apps such as Camtasia, CamStudio or VHScrCap to things like VNC (haven't found any server able to broadcast multiple windows at once, much less background windows) and even application virtualization, but in the end I haven't found anything that fits my needs. Most solutions that allow capturing a window instead of the whole desktop will not let you capture multiple windows but only a single window and on top of that they don't even work when the window is in the background.

  I find few conflicts on people's reactions about adding noindex on paginations. What does pro webmasters has to say about this? I am planning to add noindex meta for all paginations with a hope to increase website value, so I would like some pro's feedback on this. e.g. here: http://w3tut.org/blog 3 posts' first few paragraphs are displayed and meta is taken from first post from that page, which will cause duplicate meta issue. Also, 3 posts in a page could be unrelated to each other as well. Is it a good idea to add noindex for these pages, so full article posts get more value?

• Why did the upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 ruin my system?

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, when I log in, everything is ruined. It's all black, blank white icons, blank black icons on the start menu, and well, nothing works. If I open up Chromium, it looks as though it's in high contrast mode. Is this a bug? Any ideas what could have happened? Can I get 11.10 back? • Need help with testdisk output

  I had (note the past tense) an ubuntu 12.04 system with separate partitions for the base and /home directories. It started acting wonky, so I decided to do a reinstall with 12.10, intending just to do a reinstall to the base partition. After several seconds, I realize that the installer was repartitioning the drive and reinstalling, so I pulled the power cord. I'm now trying to recover as much as I can with testdisk, but it seems that testdisk is finding 100 unique partitions when I run it - they mostly tend to be HFS+ or solaris /home (which I think is just an ext4; I've never had solaris on the machine). I've pasted an abbreviated version of the testdisk output below (first ~100 lines, and then ~100 lines from the middle of the output). Is there a way to combine or recreate the partitions and then data recovery, or some other way maximize what I can recover (ideally as much of the file system as possible)? I really only care about what was in the /home directory - I'd rather not use photorec since I don't have another 2 TB HD lying around to recover to.
