• Building a CMS in PHP: Development tools

  I'm planning to build a CMS in PHP and MySQL, mainly for my own amusement and education. (Though who knows, I may come up with something useful and cool. Anything's possible.) I'll be asking questions about code architecture etc. later. For now, I'm more interested in development tools. So far, all my playing with code has been done on a web server, and I've edited over FTP. I was thinking it might be quicker to use a localhost. Also, that way, I could use version control (which I've never done before). So, A. How do I set up a localhost server with many subdomains on an Ubuntu 9.10 computer. Is XAMPP for Linux the way to go, or should I use a standard Apache distro? (Or another webserver altogether?) For that matter, is it possible to set up more than one webserver on the same computer, and to use them for different localhost subdomains? B. How do I set up a version control thingy covering all the code (which will be on several subdomains of localhost, and in a few shared folders)? I've read Joel Spolsky's HgInt tutorial, and it makes Mercurial look good. And simple, especially if you're working on your own. C. Should I continue to use gEdit to write HTML/CSS/JS/PHP, or is there a better free editor out there for these languages?

• Existing Calendar Software for Web Service?

  I'd like to offer users of my web platform calendars, and also offer group calendar and public calendar features. I know of Google Calendar API, of course, but that would require all my users to have Google accounts (although, I guess the question is who does not these days). I am wondering if there are any other alternatives? I can write my own, but this has gotten to have been done thousands of times already! I am looking not so much at the front end; we'd probably going to re-skin the UI anyways. But I want a solution that has good backend support for storing events and recurring events, and maintaining multiple calendars. Ideally, the engine would also support things like shared event between different calendars, syncing with other calendars, etc. Sad thing is that this does seem like Google Calendar would cover it, but asking all the users to have to have google accounts may not be realistic. Especially since we'd also want to create group calendars, and I am not sure under who's google account that'd be, and if that'd even be covered under their terms of use. Your thoughts? Thanks.

• POST variables to web server?

  Hello I've been trying several things from Google to POST data to a web server, but none of them work: I'm still stuck at how to convert the variables into the request, considering that the second variable is an SQL query so it has spaces. Does someone know the correct way to use a WebClient to POST data? I'd rather use WebClient because it requires less code than HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse. • complex web forms and javascript

  I need to create a few data heavy complicated forms. Currently, the information is being entered into a spread sheet, but the users will need to enter the information into the online form where it will be saved to a database. The problem is that the business users currently using the spread sheet aren't going to want to use the online application if it isn't as easy as entering the information into the spread sheet. This is further complicated in that the information they are entering into the spread sheet is represented by three different DB tables where one "object" is composed of two of the others. I would prefer to not have them have to go through multiple forms. Some of what I have been thinking is: Use of auto complete where possible Hiding/removing form fields dynamically possible wizard style page flow?? I've been googling for other data heavy web forms but can't seem to really find any good examples. I am familiar with jQuery and prototypejs and have also tried googling for frameworks designed for data heavy applications but didn't come up with anything. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  Does anyone know how to databind the .Source property of the WebBrowser in WPF ( 3.5SP1 )? I have a listview that I want to have a small WebBrowser on the left, and content on the right, and to databind the source of each WebBrowser with the URI in each object bound to the list item. Is it possible to use ObjectOutputStream for message object persistence? WebApplication B reads the message object via InputStream FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream("F:/MessagesPersistedFolder"+uid); MimeMessage mm = new MimeMessage(sessionObj,fis); What if the mail message object which is already written via WebApplication A is not a MimeMessage? How can I read non-mime messages using input stream? MimeMessage constructor mandates sessionObj as the first parameter? How can I obtain this sessionObj in WebApplicationB? Do I have to again establish store connection with the same emailid,emailpassword,popserver and port(already used in WebApplication A) with the email server inorder to obtain this session object?   Hi, I am building an application and I am using web services for getting data from a server. It was working fine when I was developing on my XP machine but had to switch to Windows 7. On the new machine I grabbed the latest version of the code using sourcesafe. However, when I try to add a service reference in the solution or update an existing one I get the following error: There was an error downloading 'http://localhost:52490/Service/CustomerService.asmx'. • Web Shop Schema - Document Db

  I'd like to evaluate a document db, probably mongo db in an ASP.Net MVC web shop. A little reasoning at the beginning: There are about 2 million products. The product model would be pretty bad for rdbms as there'd be many different kinds of products with unique attributes. For example, there'd be books which have isbn, authors, title, pages etc as well as dvds with play time, directors, artists etc and quite a few more types. In the end, I'd have about 9 different products with a combined column count (counting common columns like title only once) of about 70 to 100 whereas each individual product has 15 columns at most. The three commonly used ways in RDBMS would be: EAV model which would have pretty bad performance characteristics and would make it either impractical or perform even worse if I'd like to display the author of a book in a list of different products (think start page, recommended products etc.). Ignore the column count and put it all in the product table: Although I deal with somewhat bigger databases (row wise), I don't have any experience with tables with more than 20 columns as far as performance is concered but I guess 100 columns would have some implications. Create a table for each product type: I personally don't like this approach as it complicates everything else. C# Driver / Classes: I'd like to use the NoRM driver and so far I think i'll try to create a product dto that contains all properties (grouped within detail classes like book details, except for those properties that should be displayed on list views etc.). In the app I'll use BookBehavior / DvdBehaviour which are wrappers around a product dto but only expose the revelent Properties. My questions now: Are my performance concerns with the many columns approach valid? Did I overlook something and there is a much better way to do it in an RDBMS? Is MongoDb on Windows stable enough? Does my approach with different behaviour wrappers make sense?

• Avoid loading unnecessary data from db into objects (web pages)

  Really newbie question coming up. Is there a standard (or good) way to deal with not needing all of the information that a database table contains loaded into every associated object. I'm thinking in the context of web pages where you're only going to use the objects to build a single page rather than an application with longer lived objects. For example, lets say you have an Article table containing id, title, author, date, summary and fullContents fields. You don't need the fullContents to be loaded into the associated objects if you're just showing a page containing a list of articles with their summaries. On the other hand if you're displaying a specific article you might want every field loaded for that one article and maybe just the titles for the other articles (e.g. for display in a recent articles sidebar). Some techniques I can think of: Don't worry about it, just load everything from the database every time. Have several different, possibly inherited, classes for each table and create the appropriate one for the situation (e.g. SummaryArticle, FullArticle). Use one class but set unused properties to null at creation if that field is not needed and be careful. Give the objects access to the database so they can load some fields on demand. Something else? All of the above seem to have fairly major disadvantages. I'm fairly new to programming, very new to OOP and totally new to databases so I might be completely missing the obvious answer here. :)

• Secure web module for paid subscribtion

  Hello everyone, I'm building a website (a community web site like digg) but we will soon release a new feature that people will need to pay for. Right now, our website is in pure C# in .NET, very simple pages with some AJAX. When the member log in, there is no HTTPS. Everything is check with session and the internal validation that I do. What we need, is that when the people are logged in, they can click on a link a proceed to a payment (Paypal, credit card, etc). After the payment is done, the "billing module" will return a value to my site to validate that the payment is done so the account will be flagged as "paying member". I'm guessing this is the way to do, maybe I'm wrong! So my questions are: -What is the name of this kind of billing module? (I will do some research on that) -Do you know any ready to go module that does this kind of thing? -(I push my luck) Do you know any FREE module that do this kind of things. • Integrating Magento with a simple static website.

  Magento is an awesomely powerful ecommerce platform. That said, it is also very complex, and I'd like to know if there is a relatively simple way to utilize Magento as our mISV site's backend to fulfill orders without actually "using" Magento's framework to build the site, run the site, etc. In other words, I don't want to use the built-in CMS, etc. since we have a static website already built. I'd just like our Buy Now buttons to utilize the checkout stuff, and would like to be able to use the back-end part to keep track of orders etc. I was able to accomplish this "fairly" easily with osCommerce, but Magento is proving to be a little more difficult to wrap my head around since I've only started looking at it for a few days now. I found another person asking this same exact question on the Magento wiki (along with several others in the forum), and none of them ever receive a reply for some reason. I noticed that there are may Magento experts on Stack Overflow, so I thought I'd give it a go here. This is an example of one question asked by someone on their wiki, and it captures the essence of what I'm trying to accomplish: Hi, as far as I understand, all shopping cart/eCommerce solutions I see are full featured PHP driven web sites. This means that all the pages the user interacts with, are server generated, and thus, the experience, is tied to the magento framework/workflow. I’d like to integrate bits and pieces of eCommerce/shopping cart in my existing website. Effectively, I’d like to have: 1) on a product information page, a “buy now/add to cart” button that adds to a cart 2) on every page, a view cart/checkout option 3) on a checkout page, with additional content already in place, having the magento “checkout” block integrated in the page (and not the entire page generated from Magento). Have any of you done this with Magento? This is for a simple one-product website so any advice you could share would be highly appreciated.

• Debugging a Google Web Toolkit application that has an error when deployed on Google App Engine

  I have a Google Web Toolkit application that I am deploying to Google App Engine. In the deployed application, I am getting a JavaScript error Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property 'f' of null. This sounds like the JavaScript equivalent of a Java NullPointerException. The problem is that the GWT JavaScript is obfuscated, so it's impossible to debug in the browser and I can't reproduce the same problem in hosted mode where I could use the Java debugger. I think the reason I'm only seeing the error on the deployed application is that the database I'm using on the GAE server is triggering something differently than the test database I'm using during testing and development. So, any ideas about the best way to proceed? I've thought of the following things: Deploy a non-obsfucated version of my application. Despite a lot of Googling, I can't figure out how to do this using the automatic deploy script provided with the Google Eclipse Plugin. Does anyone know? Download and copy my GAE data to the local server Somehow point my development code to use the GAE server for data instead of the local test database. This seems like the best idea... Can anyone suggest how to proceed here? Finally, is there a way to catch these JavaScript errors on the production server and log them somewhere? Without logging, I won't have anyway to know if my users are having errors that don't occur on the server. The GWT.log() function is automatically stripped out of the production code...

I tried to use nusoap on PHP5. I have some problems with charset and Content-Type. Visual Studio gives this error : The HTML document does not contain Web service discovery information. Metadata contains a reference that cannot be resolved: 'https://www.xxx.yy'. There is a problem with the XML that was received from the network. See inner exception for more details. • Manually filling opcode cache for entire app using apc_compile_file, then switching to new release.

  Does anyone have a great system, or any ideas, for doing as the title says? I want to switch production version of web app-- written in PHP and served by Apache-- from release 1234 to release 1235, but before that happens, have all files already in the opcode cache (APC). Then after the switch, remove the old cache entries for files from release 1234. As far as I can think of there are three easy ways of atomically switching from one version to the next. Have a symbolic link, for example /live, that is always the document root but is changed to point from one version to the next. Similarly, have a directory /live that is always the document root, but use mv live oldversion && mv newversion live to switch to new version. Edit apache configuration to change the document root to newversion, then restart apache. I think it is preferable not to have to do 3, but I can't think of anyway to precompile all php files AND use 1 or 2 to switch release. So can someone either convince me its okay to rely on option 3, or tell me how to work with 1 or 2, or reveal some other option I am not thinking of?

  I have an application that requires a database and I have already setup tables but not sure if they match the requirements of the app. The app is a crawler which fetches web urls, crawls and stores appropriate urls and posts and all this is based on client requests which are stored as projects. So for each url stored there is one post and for client there are many projects and for each project there are many types of requests. So we get a client with a request and assign them a project name and then use the request to search for content and store the url and post. A request could already exist and should not be duplicated but should be associated with the right client and project and post etc. Here is my schema now: url table: urlId PK queryId FK url post table: postId PK urlId FK post date request table: queryId PK request client table: clientId PK client Name projectId FK project table: projectID PK queryID FK project Does this look right? or does anyone have suggestions. Of course my stored procedures and insert statements will have to be in depth.

• Analyzing Web Application Speed

  I'm a bit confused because the logical/programmer brain in me says that if all things are constant, the speed of a function must be constant. I am working on a PHP web application with jqGrid as a front end for showing the data. I am testing on my personal computer, so network traffic does not apply. I make an HTTP request to a PHP function, it returns the data, and then jqGrid renders it. What has me befuddled is that sometimes, Firebug reports that this is taking 300-600 milliseconds sometimes, and sometimes, it's taking 3.68 seconds. I can run the request over and over again, with very radically different response times. The query is the same. The number of users on the system is the same. No network latency. Same code. I'm not running other applications on the computer while testing. I could understand query caching improving performance on subsequent requests, but the speed is just fluctuating wildly with no rhyme or reason. So, my question is, what else can cause such variability in the response time? How can I determine what's doing it? More importantly, is there any way to get things more consistent?

• With a browser, how do I know which decimal separator does the client use?

  I'm developing a web application. I need to display some decimal data correctly so that it can be copied and pasted into a certain GUI application that is not under my control. The GUI application is locale sensitive and it accepts only the correct decimal separator which is set in the system. I can guess the decimal separator from Accept-Language and the guess will be correct in 95% cases, but sometimes it fails. Is there any way to do it on server side (preferably, so that I can collect statistics), or on client side? Update: The whole point of the task is doing it automatically. In fact, this webapp is a kind of online interface to a legacy GUI which helps to fill the forms correctly. The kind of users that use it mostly have no idea on what a decimal separator is. The Accept-Language solution is implemented and works, but I'd like to improve it. Update2: I need to retrive a very specific setting: decimal separator set in Control Panel / Regional and Language Options / Regional Options / Customize. I deal with four kinds of operating systems: Russian Windows with a comma as a DS (80%). English Windows with a period as a DS (15%). Russian Windows with a period as a DS to make poorly written English applications work (4%). English Windows with a comma as a DS to make poorly written Russian applications work (1%). All 100% of clients are in Russia and the legacy application deals with Russian goverment-issued forms, so asking for a country will yield 100% of Russian Federation, and GeoIP will yield 80% of Russian Federation and 20% of other, incorrect answers.

• Developing on both Windows & Linux machines simultaneously

  Sorry for the bad title (couldn't think of a better way to describe it) I have a windows machine which I do development on. However, I have a new project which needs to interact with a linux system (executing linux commands etc.). So, obviously I can't do development on my windows machine..and I don't wish to code on the dev machine, svn commit and then svn update it on the linux machine. Is there a way where any changes I make on my dev machine will be quickly mirrored to the linux machine? SVN is not a very quick alternative and of course some changes will be very minor. Any ideas? A network share I guess....but that's not very pretty (bit slow too). As fellow developers I would like to know if you've been in a similar situation and how you've resolved it. On a furthernote, I can't just install Ubuntu as my development machine and mirror the commands, applications etc. from the linux machine because it's a cluster 'master' machine and so therefore it has quite a special configuration. Thanks guys! EDIT: I've also thought about having web services on the linux machine and then just calling them from code thus seperating platform development dependency.   I have a web user control, CreateQuestion.ascx, in ASP.NET. I want an event "QuestionAdded" to fire when a specific button is clicked. I don't want to send any data, I just want to know WHEN the button is fired. I know that both SetupControls() is being run, and the code behind the button which should fire the event is run. When I debug, I can see the event QuestionAdded always are null.   Hello I've been trying several things from Google to POST data to a web server, but none of them work: I'm still stuck at how to convert the variables into the request, considering that the second variable is an SQL query so it has spaces. Does someone know the correct way to use a WebClient to POST data? I'd rather use WebClient because it requires less code than HttpWebRequest/HttpWebResponse. • UTF-8 HTML and CSS files with BOM (and how to remove the BOM with Python)

  First, some background: I'm developing a web application using Python. All of my (text) files are currently stored in UTF-8 with the BOM. This includes all my HTML templates and CSS files. These resources are stored as binary data (BOM and all) in my DB. When I retrieve the templates from the DB, I decode them using template.decode('utf-8'). When the HTML arrives in the browser, the BOM is present at the beginning of the HTTP response body. This generates a very interesting error in Chrome: Extra <html> encountered. Migrating attributes back to the original <html> element and ignoring the tag. Chrome seems to generate an <html> tag automatically when it sees the BOM and mistakes it for content, making the real <html> tag an error. So, using Python, what is the best way to remove the BOM from my UTF-8 encoded templates (if it exists -- I can't guarantee this in the future)? For other text-based files like CSS, will major browsers correctly interpret (or ignore) the BOM? They are being sent as plain binary data without .decode('utf-8'). Note: I am using Python 2.5. • SQL query recursion for a web-like structure

  I have a table here, named "Foo". The data is set up something like this. ID TableReference DataId0 DataId1 DataId2 -- -------------- ------- ------- ------- 1 Prize 3 4 5 2 Prize 4 5 NULL 3 Cash 1 NULL NULL 4 Prize 8 NULL 12 5 Foo 2 3 NULL 6 Cash 8 1 10 7 Foo 5 1 2 Etc. The data is horribly set up, I know, but I didn't set it up that way. :) I'm only dealing with the after effect. I'm trying to come up with a way to essentially "flatten" the table; that is, to display all the data to a point where the table "Foo" does not reference itself. I'm trying to figure out a sql query that I can do to get there. Usually when I deal with recursion, I have (or can establish) parent IDs and set it up that way, but for this table there are seemingly multiple child and parent IDs creating a web-like structure instead of a hierarchy. So I'm at a loss where to even begin to write a sql query for something like this. Note: There is no infinite looping (where one Foo points to another Foo, which points back to the original Foo) from what I've found. Using t-sql. Thanks for any assistance, if at all possible.
