• Integration Patterns with Azure Service Bus Relay, Part 1: Exposing the on-premise service

  We're in the process of delivering an enabling project to expose on-premise WCF services securely to Internet consumers. The Azure Service Bus Relay is doing the clever stuff, we register our on-premise service with Azure, consumers call into our .servicebus.windows.net namespace, and their requests are relayed and serviced on-premise. In theory it's all wonderfully simple; by using the relay we get lots of protocol options, free HTTPS and load balancing, and by integrating to ACS we get plenty of security options. Part of our delivery is a suite of sample consumers for the service - .NET, jQuery, PHP - and this set of posts will cover setting up the service and the consumers. Part 1: Exposing the on-premise service In theory, this is ultra-straightforward. In practice, and on a dev laptop it is - but in a corporate network with firewalls and proxies, it isn't, so we'll walkthrough some of the pitfalls. Note that I'm using the "old" Azure portal which will soon be out of date, but the new shiny portal should have the same steps available and be easier to use. We start with a simple WCF service which takes a string as input, reverses the string and returns it. The Part 1 version of the code is on GitHub here: on GitHub here: IPASBR Part 1. Configuring Azure Service Bus Start by logging into the Azure portal and registering a Service Bus namespace which will be our endpoint in the cloud. Give it a globally unique name, set it up somewhere near you (if you’re in Europe, remember Europe (North) is Ireland, and Europe (West) is the Netherlands), and  enable ACS integration by ticking "Access Control" as a service: Authenticating and authorizing to ACS When we try to register our on-premise service as a listener for the Service Bus endpoint, we need to supply credentials, which means only trusted service providers can act as listeners. We can use the default "owner" credentials, but that has admin permissions so a dedicated service account is better (Neil Mackenzie has a good post On Not Using owner with the Azure AppFabric Service Bus with lots of permission details). Click on "Access Control Service" for the namespace, navigate to Service Identities and add a new one. Give the new account a sensible name and description: Let ACS generate a symmetric key for you (this will be the shared secret we use in the on-premise service to authenticate as a listener), but be sure to set the expiration date to something usable. The portal defaults to expiring new identities after 1 year - but when your year is up *your identity will expire without warning* and everything will stop working. In production, you'll need governance to manage identity expiration and a process to make sure you renew identities and roll new keys regularly. The new service identity needs to be authorized to listen on the service bus endpoint. This is done through claim mapping in ACS - we'll set up a rule that says if the nameidentifier in the input claims has the value serviceProvider, in the output we'll have an action claim with the value Listen. In the ACS portal you'll see that there is already a Relying Party Application set up for ServiceBus, which has a Default rule group. Typically you'd install AppFabric 1.1 for Widnows Server and set the service to auto-start in IIS, but for dev just navigate to the local REST URL, which will activate the service and register it with Azure. Testing the service locally As well as an Azure endpoint, the service has a WebHttpBinding for local REST access:         <!-- local REST endpoint for internal use -->         <endpoint address="rest"                   binding="webHttpBinding"                   behaviorConfiguration="RESTBehavior"                   contract="Sixeyed.Ipasbr.Services.IFormatService" /> Build the service, then navigate to: http://localhost/Sixeyed.Ipasbr.Services/FormatService.svc/rest/reverse?string=abc123 - and you should see the reversed string response: If your network allows it, you'll get the expected response as before, but in the background your service will also be listening in the cloud. Good stuff! Who needs network security? Onto the next post for consuming the service with the netTcpRelayBinding.  Setting up network access to Azure But, if you get an error, it's because your network is secured and it's doing something to stop the relay working. The Service Bus relay bindings try to use direct TCP connections to Azure, so if ports 9350-9354 are available *outbound*, then the relay will run through them. If not, the binding steps down to standard HTTP, and issues a CONNECT across port 443 or 80 to set up a tunnel for the relay. If your network security guys are doing their job, the first option will be blocked by the firewall, and the second option will be blocked by the proxy, so you'll get this error: System.ServiceModel.CommunicationException: Unable to reach sixeyed-ipasbr.servicebus.windows.net via TCP (9351, 9352) or HTTP (80, 443) - and that will probably be the start of lots of discussions. Network guys don't really like giving servers special permissions for the web proxy, and they really don't like opening ports, so they'll need to be convinced about this. The resolution in our case was to put up a dedicated box in a DMZ, tinker with the firewall and the proxy until we got a relay connection working, then run some traffic which the the network guys monitored to do a security assessment afterwards. Along the way we hit a few more issues, diagnosed mainly with Fiddler and Wireshark: System.Net.ProtocolViolationException: Chunked encoding upload is not supported on the HTTP/1.0 protocol - this means the TCP ports are not available, so Azure tries to relay messaging traffic across HTTP. The service can access the endpoint, but the proxy is downgrading traffic to HTTP 1.0, which does not support tunneling, so Azure can’t make its connection. We were using the Squid proxy, version 2.6. The Squid project is incrementally adding HTTP 1.1 support, but there's no definitive list of what's supported in what version (here are some hints). System.ServiceModel.Security.SecurityNegotiationException: The X.509 certificate CN=servicebus.windows.net chain building failed. The certificate that was used has a trust chain that cannot be verified. Replace the certificate or change the certificateValidationMode. The evocation function was unable to check revocation because the revocation server was offline. - by this point we'd given up on the HTTP proxy and opened the TCP ports. We got this error when the relay binding does it's authentication hop to ACS. The messaging traffic is TCP, but the control traffic still goes over HTTP, and as part of the ACS authentication the process checks with a revocation server to see if Microsoft’s ACS cert is still valid, so the proxy still needs some clearance. The service account (the IIS app pool identity) needs access to: www.public-trust.com mscrl.microsoft.com We still got this error periodically with different accounts running the app pool. We fixed that by ensuring the machine-wide proxy settings are set up, so every account uses the correct proxy: netsh winhttp set proxy proxy-server="http://proxy.x.y.z" - and you might need to run this to clear out your credential cache: certutil -urlcache * delete If your network guys end up grudgingly opening ports, they can restrict connections to the IP address range for your chosen Azure datacentre, which might make them happier - see Windows Azure Datacenter IP Ranges. After all that you've hopefully got an on-premise service listening in the cloud, which you can consume from pretty much any technology.

• Ubuntu 12.04 wireless (wifi) not working, can not upgrade to 12.10, touchpad gestures not working. What to do?

  I installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS 3 days ago and since then wireless feature and touchpad gestures are not working. Tried everything on internet but still unsuccessful. I cant upgrade to ubuntu 12.10. These are the following comments I tried. Please help me. EDIT: just realized usb 3.0 is also not working. In our platform "OMAP35XX_TPS659XX_TI_V1" if you do this we cause the catalog parser to die... For example if we have a library "Musbfn_OMAP35XX_TPS659XX_TI_V1.dll" entering this in the catalogs pbcxml file in a <module> section causes the XML parser to fail with : Error 3 The 'urn:Microsoft.PlatformBuilder/Catalog:Module' element is        invalid - The value '012345678901234567890123456789.dll' is invalid         according to its datatype         'urn:Microsoft.PlatformBuilder/Catalog:CatalogFileName' - The actual         length is greater than the MaxLength value. A: There are a couple workarounds I can think of. I believe the Module element is only used when doing SYSGEN parsing to make sure dependent SYSGENs are present when the item is selected, so I believe it is optional to the catalog. The other obvious workaround is to shorten the soc name. I realize neither of these solutions is ideal. This is not something we anticipated when we tested CE6.0, sorry. If you capture a network trace or turn on KITL debug zones via dpCurSettings in kitl.dll, do you see KITL active after this? Do you have any advice to consider while tryin to improve the performance of it? A: If I remember correctly sample code has support for some specific hardware controllers (little obsolete now). A: I think that's the next valid step. You need to figure out whether KITL is hanging or the device - use instrumented serial debug messages and network trace to determine this. If you get around this error and steal these from Windows Mobile instead, when you try and run the CETK tests you get a data abort in radiometricsdll.dll. Travis Hobrla [MS] (Expert)[2010-3-30 12:55]: Q: I've got a platform (not developed by myself) where I2C bus support has to be provided through the OAL as the kernel needs to talk to devices such as the power management IC and gas gauge so a 'proper' I2C driver hanging off device manager isn't possible. This happens to be a polled driver, so obviously it hits the system hard when either under lots of traffic or an error condition occurs and the driver constantly polls. I originally thought that there was no straightforward way to make such code interrupt driven in the kernel (as it's a cludge) but I realised that that's exactly what ETHDBG drivers do. Is there any reason why I shouldn't have a go at implementing a similar mechanism for our kernel resident I2C driver? If not, are there any obvious pitfalls - I've not seen any other BSP's do this in the past... A: You can make a 'proper' driver that calls down into the OAL to do the actual I2C transactions. Alternatively you can build an interrupt-based version in the OAL where you handle everything in the ISR. There is nothing wrong with that so long as the rest of your drivers and app threads can handle longer times with interrupts off while you are servicing I2C interrupts. • MERGE Bug with Filtered Indexes

The duplicate key value is (A). The statement has been terminated. In this test, the MERGE query execution happens to apply the changes in the order of the ‘pk’ column. In test one, this was not a problem: row 1 is removed from the unique filtered index by changing status_code from ‘a’ to ‘d’ before row 4 is added.  At no point does the table contain two rows where ak = ‘A’ and status_code = ‘a’. In test two, however, the first change was to change row 1 from status ‘d’ to status ‘a’.  This change means there would be two rows in the filtered unique index where ak = ‘A’ (both row 1 and row 4 meet the index filtering criteria ‘status_code = a’). The storage engine does not allow the query processor to violate a unique key (unless IGNORE_DUP_KEY is ON, but that is a different story, and doesn’t apply to MERGE in any case).  This strict rule applies regardless of the fact that if all changes were applied, there would be no unique key violation (row 4 would eventually be changed from ‘a’ to ‘d’, removing it from the filtered unique index, and resolving the key violation). Why it went wrong The query optimizer usually detects when this sort of temporary uniqueness violation could occur, and builds a plan that avoids the issue.  I wrote about this a couple of years ago in my post Beware Sneaky Reads with Unique Indexes (you can read more about the details on pages 495-497 of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Internals or in Craig Freedman’s blog post on maintaining unique indexes).  To summarize though, the optimizer introduces Split, Filter, Sort, and Collapse operators into the query plan to: Split each row update into delete followed by an inserts Filter out rows that would not change the index (due to the filter on the index, or a non-updating update) Sort the resulting stream by index key, with deletes before inserts Collapse delete/insert pairs on the same index key back into an update The effect of all this is that only net changes are applied to an index (as one or more insert, update, and/or delete operations).  In this case, the net effect is a single update of the filtered unique index: changing the row for ak = ‘A’ from pk = 4 to pk = 1.  In case that is less than 100% clear, let’s look at the operation in test two again:          Target                     Changes                   Result +-----------------------+    +------------------+    +-----------------------+ ¦ pk ¦ ak ¦ status_code ¦    ¦ pk ¦ status_code ¦    ¦ pk ¦ ak ¦ status_code ¦ ¦----+----+-------------¦    ¦----+-------------¦    ¦----+----+-------------¦ ¦  1 ¦ A  ¦ d           ¦    ¦  1 ¦ d           ¦    ¦  1 ¦ A  ¦ a           ¦ ¦  2 ¦ B  ¦ a           ¦    ¦  4 ¦ a           ¦    ¦  2 ¦ B  ¦ a           ¦ ¦  3 ¦ C  ¦ a           ¦    +------------------+    ¦  3 ¦ C  ¦ a           ¦ ¦  4 ¦ A  ¦ a           ¦                            ¦  4 ¦ A  ¦ d           ¦ +-----------------------+                            +-----------------------+ From the filtered index’s point of view (filtered for status_code = ‘a’ and shown in nonclustered index key order) the overall effect of the query is:   Before           After +---------+    +---------+ ¦ pk ¦ ak ¦    ¦ pk ¦ ak ¦ ¦----+----¦    ¦----+----¦ ¦  4 ¦ A  ¦    ¦  1 ¦ A  ¦ ¦  2 ¦ B  ¦    ¦  2 ¦ B  ¦ ¦  3 ¦ C  ¦    ¦  3 ¦ C  ¦ +---------+    +---------+ The single net change there is a change of pk from 4 to 1 for the nonclustered index entry ak = ‘A’.  This is the magic performed by the split, sort, and collapse.  Notice in particular how the original changes to the index key (on the ‘ak’ column) have been transformed into an update of a non-key column (pk is included in the nonclustered index).  By not updating any nonclustered index keys, we are guaranteed to avoid transient key violations. The Execution Plans The estimated MERGE execution plan that produces the incorrect key-violation error looks like this (click to enlarge in a new window): The successful UPDATE execution plan is (click to enlarge in a new window): The MERGE execution plan is a narrow (per-row) update.  The single Clustered Index Merge operator maintains both the clustered index and the filtered nonclustered index.  The UPDATE plan is a wide (per-index) update.  The clustered index is maintained first, then the Split, Filter, Sort, Collapse sequence is applied before the nonclustered index is separately maintained. There is always a wide update plan for any query that modifies the database. The narrow form is a performance optimization where the number of rows is expected to be relatively small, and is not available for all operations.  One of the operations that should disallow a narrow plan is maintaining a unique index where intermediate key violations could occur. Workarounds The MERGE can be made to work (producing a wide update plan with split, sort, and collapse) by: Adding all columns referenced in the filtered index’s WHERE clause to the index key (INCLUDE is not sufficient); or Executing the query with trace flag 8790 set e.g. OPTION (QUERYTRACEON 8790). Undocumented trace flag 8790 forces a wide update plan for any data-changing query (remember that a wide update plan is always possible).  Either change will produce a successfully-executing wide update plan for the MERGE that failed previously. Conclusion The optimizer fails to spot the possibility of transient unique key violations with MERGE under the conditions listed at the start of this post.  It incorrectly chooses a narrow plan for the MERGE, which cannot provide the protection of a split/sort/collapse sequence for the nonclustered index maintenance. The MERGE plan may fail at execution time depending on the order in which rows are processed, and the distribution of data in the database.  Worse, a previously solid MERGE query may suddenly start to fail unpredictably if a filtered unique index is added to the merge target table at any point. In case of collision, it doesn't matter which value is saved to the dict as long as it's consistent.

  Is it possible programmatically to discover the exported names (globals, entry points, whatever) in a Windows DLL file without implementing a parser for the binary executable file format itself? I know there are tools to do this (though no open source ones I've found), but I'm curious whether there is a Windows API to accomplish the same thing or whether such tools operate merely by examining the binary file directly. I suspect there is an API for .NET libraries: if that's the case then is there a similar one for native DLLs? Edit: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1128150 is basically an exact duplicate. The answer there is roughly "there is no API, but you can hack it using LoadLibraryEx() and navigating a few resulting data structures". Edit: I was able to use the accepted answer at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1128150 to create a quick DLL dumper with Python and ctypes that works.

  Hello, I have an XML document format from a legacy system that I have to support in a future application. I want to be able to both serialize and deserialize the XML between XML and C# objects, however, using the objects generated by xsd.exe, the C# serialization includes the xmlns:xsi..., xsi:... etc XML attributes on the root element of the document that gets generated. Is there anyway to disable this so that absolutely no XML attribute nodes get put out in the resulting XML ? The XML document should be elements only. Duplicate?   I am currently working with an SSRS 2008 report that returns a dataset similar to the following: Job# ClientId MoneyIn MoneyOut ------------------------------ 1 ABC123 10 25 1 ABC123 10 25 1 ABC123 5 25 2 XYZ123 25 50 2 XYZ123 25 50 3 XYZ123 15 15 Where MoneyOut should be equal to the total amount of MoneyIn for a job if the job has been balanced out correctly. The problem that I am running into is when displaying this in a tablix in SSRS I can return the correct MoneyOut value for a job by setting the field to =first(Fields!MoneyOut.Value) but I also need to sum the value of these by day and attempting to do =sum(first(Fields!MoneyOut.Value)) yields an error about nesting aggregate functions. I've also attempted to sum the value of the textboxes using something like =sum(ReportItems!MoneyOut1.Value) which yields an error that you can only use aggregates on report items in the header or footer. So my question is, is there some way to duplicate the functionality of distinct() in SSRS reports or is there some way to just total up the values of text fields that I am unaware of?   Using a jQuery dialog, on clicking OK I call $.post( "save.asp", { id: 1, value: "abcxyz" } ); to pass the values to my ASP classic file that will update the database. I don't need a return value (unless it fails). I'm a relative noob to jQuery, so I'm assuming I'm using JSON to pass the values to the ASP file. I just don't know what to do with them in ASP (using VBScript). I've seen things like ASP Extreme, but I'm not clear on how to use them. I've tried referencing values via the Request collection, but no luck. All I want to do is take the values passed, parse them out, then save them to the database. Sorry if this is a duplicate, but this just isn't clicking for me.

I tried to use the Union operation and got a new list with values (A, B, C, D}. However, I need the B & C values from the second list, not first one.   I have seen threads on many sites regarding extending the gridview control so obviously this will be a duplicate. But I haven't found any that truly extend the control to the extent that you could have custom sorting (with header images), filtering by putting drop downs or textboxes in header columns (on a column by column basis) and custom paging (one that doesn't return all records but just returns the ones requested for the given page). Are there any good tutorials that show the inner-workings of the gridview and how to override the proper functions? I've seen several snippets here and there but none seem to really work and explain things well. Any links would be appreciated. Thanks!

• Seamless jQuery Marquee?

  Is it possible to create a 100% seamless marquee in jQuery (or just javascript but jQuery prefered)? I've made a simple marquee that moves left until it is off the screen then simply jumps (when out of view) to the right and starts again. However I would love it to not have the wait. The only way I could think of doing this would be to duplicate the text and put it after the first text, then swap them round again. However I have no idea how to implement this in jQuery. Any ideas?

But what happens when you need to create a new algorithm for something? These books don't teach how to think in terms of algorithms. So I'm looking for books that will teach me the thinking-process of creating algorithms. Any good suggestions?

  Hi, I have a list of duplicate numbers: Enumerable.Range(1,3).Select(o => Enumerable.Repeat(o, 3)).SelectMany(o => o) // {1,1,1,2,2,2,3,3,3} I group them and get quantity of occurance: Enumerable.Range(1,3).Select(o => Enumerable.Repeat(o, 3)).SelectMany(o => o) .GroupBy(o => o).Select(o => new { Qty = o.Count(), Num = o.Key }) Qty Num 3 1 3 2 3 3 What I really need is to limit the quantity per group to some number. If the limit is 2 the result for the above grouping would be: Qty Num 2 1 1 1 2 2 1 2 2 3 1 3 So, if Qty = 10 and limit is 4, the result is 3 rows (4, 4, 2). The Qty of each number is not equal like in example. The specified Qty limit is the same for whole list (doesn't differ based on number). Thanks

  Should journal entries be recorded in a database design? In the real world it makes sense to keep a daily entry book, then later transfer the daily entry book into double entry accounts. but in the computerized version, doing this produces duplicate records and that doesn't quite make sense? ???? What i mean is 1) user enter details , it gets recorded (this would be called the journalbook in real life) 2) the software does all the double entry accounting then references the journalbook and splits up the transaction into the double entry accounting system.

• Unix [Homework]: Get a list of /home/user/ directories in /etc/passwd

  I'm very new to Unix, and currently taking a class learning the basics of the system and its commands. I'm looking for a single command line to list off all of the user home directories in alphabetical order from the /etc/passwd directory. This applies only to the home directories, and not the contents within them. There should be no duplicate entries. I've tried many permutations of commands such as the following: sort -d | find /etc/passwd /home/* -type -d | uniq | less I've tried using -path, -name, removing -type, using -prune, and changing the search pattern to things like /home/*/$, but haven't gotten good results once. At best I can get a list of my own directory (complete with every directory inside it, which is bad), and the directories of the other students on the server (without the contained directories, which is good). I just can't get it to display the /home/user directories and nothing else for my own account. Many thanks in advance.

• What is the correct Qt idiom for exposing signals/slots of contained widgets?

  Suppose I have a MyWidget which contains a MySubWidget, e.g. a custom widget that contains a text field or something. I want other classes to be able to connect to signals and slots exposed by the contained MySubWidget instance. Is the conventional way to do this: Expose a pointer to the MySubWidget instance through a subWidget() method in MyWidget Duplicate the signals and slots of MySubWidget in the MyWidget class and write "forwarding" code Something else? Choice 1 seems like the least code, but it also sort of breaks encapsulation, since now other classes know what the contained widgets of MyWidget are and might become dependent on their functionality. Choice 2 seems like it keeps encapsulation, but it's a lot of seemingly redundant and potentially convoluted code that kind of messes up the elegance of the whole signals and slots system. What is normally done in this situation?

• Concerting an iTunes iphone OS 4.0 backup to 3.2

  Hello ! I use my 4.0 iPhone for both work and personal stuff. So iTunes keeps, every time I sync my iPhone, a backup in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup. I recently bought an iPad (OS 3.2). I'd like to be able to duplicate my iPhone backup, and restore it on the iPad (so I'll have all my apps settings, passwords, application positions, etc... from the iPhone on the iPad) So, I need to convert the backup from 4.0 to 3.2. I know this is not officially supported by Apple, but has any of you guys figured that out ? There are 5 easily editable files in the backup folder : Info.plist Manifest.mbdb Manifest.mbdx Manifest.plist Status.plist Thanks !
