  • SQL - Dervied Foreign Key - Possible?

    I'm just curious if this is possible, specifically in SQL CE (Express) with support in .NET's Entity Framework: Table1 (primary) -nvarchar(2000) url -... Table2 (with foreign key) -nvarchar(2000) domain -... foreign key on Table2.domain references Table1.url such that Table.url contains Table2.domain e.g. Table1: http://www.google.com/blah/blah http://www.cnn.com/blah/ http://www.google.com/foo Table2: google.com cnn.com Is it possible for this to be scripted and enforced by SQL CE (let alone any relation database) and, if so, can .NET's Entity Framework automatically support this if I import my database into a model?

  • Choosing approach for an IM client-server app

    Update: totally re-wrote this to be more succint. I'm looking at a new application, one part of which will be very similar to standard IM clients, i.e text chat, ability to send attachments, maybe some real-time interaction like a multi-user whiteboard. It will be client-server, i.e all traffic goes through my central server. That means if I want to support cross-communication with other IM systems, I am still free to pick any protocol for my own client<--server communication - my server can use XMPP or whatever to talk to other systems. Clients are expected to include desktop apps, but probably also browser-based as well either through Flex/Silverlight or HTML/AJAX. I see 3 options for my own client-server communication layer: XMPP. The benefits are clients already exist as do open-source servers. However it requires the most up-front research/learning and also appears like it might raise legal issues due to GPL. Custom sockets. A server app makes connections with the clients, allowing any text/binary data to be sent very fast. However this approach requires building said server from scratch, and also makes a JS client tricky Servlets (or similar web server). Using tried and tested Java web-stack, clients send HTTP requests similar to AJAX-based websites. The benefit is the server is easy to write using well-established technologies, and easy to talk to. But what restrictions would this bring? Is it appropriate technology for real-time communication? Advice and suggests are welcome, especially what pros and cons surround using a web-server approach as compared to a socket-based approach.

    I'm starting a conversion of a system from MS SQL Server to Postgres. I have the table structures converted, and I use "bcp" to get the data out of SQL Server. ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0x80 HINT: This error can also happen if the byte sequence does not match the encoding expected by the server, which is controlled by "client_encoding". CONTEXT: COPY cm_outgoing, line 200: "200 c:\temp\200.xml 2009-10-10 01:50:44.000 1900-01-01 00:00:00.000" I've already used "sed" to get rid of the NUL (0x00) entries in the file, and I can't find any instances of 0x80 in the file that I'm trying to import. Any thoughts? Is there an easier way?

    I am trying to create a simple test application to transfer data back and forth between my server and Android device. The following are the things I aim for: Ability to upload data and files to the server. To be able to view my files on the server. To be able to download the files from the server to my android device. Ability of the server to send me updates on the files or notifications to my phone. I need a safe and secure way to do these things. I have tried these: HTTPPost requests onto the server and echoing the output accordingly and capturing the HTTPresponse and parsing it. For files I have tried using MultipartEntity, but I think that has been deprecated.

    When paginating through our Phrase table it takes very long to return the results. In the sql logs we see many sql requests which don't make sense to us: Phrase Load (7.4ms) SELECT "phrases".* FROM "phrases" WHERE "phrases"."id" IS NULL LIMIT 1 User Load (0.4ms) SELECT "users".* FROM "users" WHERE "users"."id" IS NULL LIMIT 1 These add up significantly. Is there a way to prevent querying against null ids? Now i have observed if i write the Print statement above the alter command it works fine and shows me its value, but if i try to print the value after the Alter command it throws me the error i specified above. I've tried @AgencyID without the text() at the end and still no avail...

  • LINQ to SQL DB Connections not closing

    I am using LINQ to SQL in an asp.net mvc application. I am calling stored procedures via ajax calls. The active connections for 2-3 users goes to 100 active connections. and then server timeouts happen. I then used IOC -autofac to resuse the same repository that has a datacontext. now tho i get an active connection on the SQL server per loggedin user plus one. I have never seen this before. Why wouldnt Lin2sql not drop a connection when not in use? would calling a stored procedure in an ajax call in a loggedin session creat an a new active connection? Could a Stored Procedure with loops and or a waitfor hold open a connection??

    Greetings, I have a problem as follows: I have an SQL variable declared: DECLARE @myVariable nvarchar(max) a third party library set a value for this variable. To simplify, lets say that the value is as follows: SET @myVariable = 'Select ROWGUID from MySampleTable' Now, I want to execute the following query: SELECT ROWGUID FROM myTable WHERE ROWGUID in (exec sp_executesql @myVariable ) However, the above statement does not work because it returns an error telling me that I can't execute stored procedure in that way. I made a workaround and this is what I wrote: create table #temptable (ID uniqueidentifier null) if(@myVariable is not null AND @myVariable !='') insert into #temptable exec sp_executesql @myVariable SELECT ROWGUID FROM myTable WHERE ROWGUID in (select * from #temptable) DROP TABLE #temptable This works fine.However I don't think it is a good idea to use temporary table. How can I achieve the same result without necessity of creating temporary tables? I am using SQL SERVER 2005

    I am trying to log every SQL statement executed from my scripts. However I contemplate one problem I can not overcome. Is there a way to compute actual SQL statement after bind variables were specified. In SQLite I had to compute the statement to be executed manually, using code below: def __sql_to_str__(self, value,args): for p in args: if type(p) is IntType or p is None: value = value.replace("?", str(p) ,1) else: value = value.replace("?",'\'' + p + '\'',1) return value It seems CX_Oracle has cursor.parse() facilities. But I can't figure out how to trick CX_Oracle to compute my query before its execution.

    Hi I am trying to get a better understanding of relational databases and there is something that I keep bumping into and don't understand.Let's take this two tables: In this case Login.ID is the primary key with auto_increment set and Profile.ID_LOGIN is the Foreign KEY.When a user is created and it's username and password is stored in the login database does the ID coresponding to the curesnt username and password get automaticly added into ID_LOGIN or do I have to create an SQL statement to do this? If I have to create a SQL statement how should I aproach adding the ID_LOGIN to make sure I am adding it corectly?

  • Change object on client side or on server side

    I'm not sure what is the best practice. I have some big and complex objects (NOT flat). In that object I have many related objects - for example Invoice is the main class and one of it's properties is invoiceSupervisor - a big class by it's own called User. User can also be not flat and have department property - also an object called Department. For example I want create new Invoice. First way: I can present to client several fields to fill in. Some of them will be combos that I will need to fill with available values. For example available invoiceSupervisors. Then all the chosen values I can send to server and on server I can create new Invoice and assign all chosen values to that new Invoice. Then I will need to assign new supervisor I will pull the chosen User by id that user picked up on server from combobox. I might do some verification on the User such as does the user applicable to be invoice supervisor. Then I will assign the User object to invoiceSupervisor. Then after filling all properties I will save the new invoice. Second way: In the beginning I can call to server to get a new Invoice. Then on client I can fill all chosen values , for example I can call to server to get new User object and then fill it's id from combobox and assign the User as invoiceSupervisor. After filling the Invoice object on client I can send it to server and then the server will save the new invoice. Before saving server can run some validations as well. So what is the best approach - to make the object on client and send it to server or to collect all values from client and to make a new object on server using those values ?

    We're migrating one of our sites to ASP.Net. We do not want to use integrated security, which uses the windows account to connect to sql server (not going to get into why, its just out of the question). We created a username and password to connect to SQL Server, and would like to use that username and password, however, we also do not want other developers to see this information (easily read from the web.config).... I know it can be encrypted, but it can just as easily be decrypted by the developers - plus encryption has a performance hit. Is there any solution to this problem?

  • SQL version control methodology

    There are several questions on SO about version control for SQL and lots of resources on the web, but I can't find something that quite covers what I'm trying to do. First off, I'm talking about a methodology here. I'm familiar with the various source control applications out there and I'm familiar with tools like Red Gate's SQL Compare, etc. and I know how to write an application to check things in and out of my source control system automatically. If there is a tool which would be particularly helpful in providing a whole new methodology or which have a useful and uncommon functionality then great, but for the tasks mentioned above I'm already set. The requirements that I'm trying to meet are: The database schema and look-up table data are versioned DML scripts for data fixes to larger tables are versioned A server can be promoted from version N to version N + X where X may not always be 1 Code isn't duplicated within the version control system - for example, if I add a column to a table I don't want to have to make sure that the change is in both a create script and an alter script The system needs to support multiple clients who are at various versions for the application (trying to get them all up to within 1 or 2 releases, but not there yet) Some organizations keep incremental change scripts in their version control and to get from version N to N + 3 you would have to run scripts for N-N+1 then N+1-N+2 then N+2-N+3. Some of these scripts can be repetitive (for example, a column is added but then later it is altered to change the data type). We're trying to avoid that repetitiveness since some of the client DBs can be very large, so these changes might take longer than necessary. Some organizations will simply keep a full database build script at each version level then use a tool like SQL Compare to bring a database up to one of those versions. The problem here is that intermixing DML scripts can be a problem. Imagine a scenario where I add a column, use a DML script to fill said column, then in a later version that column name is changed. Perhaps there is some hybrid solution? Maybe I'm just asking for too much? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated though.     Hello, I have a SQL Server 2008 database. This database has two tables called Customer and Order. These tables are defined as follows: Customer -------- ID, First Name, Last Name Order ----- ID, CustomerID, Date, Description I am trying to write a query that returns all of the customers in my database. If the user has placed at least one order, I want to return the information associated with the most recent order placed. Currently, I have the following: SELECT * FROM Customer c LEFT OUTER JOIN Order o ON c.[ID]=o.[CustomerID] As you can imagine, this will return all of the orders associated with a customer. In reality though, I only want the most recent one. How do I do this in SQL? Thank you!
