  • Should I be building GUI applications on Windows using Perl & Tk?

    I have a bunch of related Perl scripts that I would like to put together in one convenient place. So I was thinking of building a GUI and incorporating the scripts. I'm using Strawberry Perl on Windows XP and have just installed Tk from cpan about fifteen minutes ago. Before I go for it, I want some sound advice either for or against it. My other option is to translate the Perl scripts into VB and use Visual Studio 2008, but that might be too much hassle for an outcome that might end up all the same had I just stuck with Perl & Tk. I haven't looked yet, but maybe there is a module for Visual Studio that would allow me to invoke Perl scripts? The main requirements are: It must be able to communicate with MySQL It must be able to fetch & parse XML files from the internet It must be transportable, scalable, and sustainable What direction would you take?

    Hello, I'm storing timestamp as int field. And on large table it takes too long to get rows inserted at date because I'm using mysql function FROM_UNIXTIME. SELECT * FROM table WHERE FROM_UNIXTIME(timestamp_field, '%Y-%m-%d') = '2010-04-04' Is there any ways to speed this query? Maybe I should use query for rows using timestamp_field >= x AND timestamp_field < y? Thank you I've just tried this query... SELECT * FROM table WHERE timestamp_field >= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 00:00:00') AND timestamp_field <= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 23:59:59') but there is no any performance bonuses. :(

  • Finding Cities within 'X' Kilometers (or Miles)

    This may or may not be clear, leave me a comment if I am off base, or you need more information. Perhaps there is a solution out there already for what I want in PHP. I am looking for a function that will add or subtract a distance from a longitude OR latitude value. Reason: I have a database with all Latitudes and Longitudes in it and want to form a query to extract all cities within X kilometers (or miles). My query would look something like this... Select * From Cities Where (Longitude > X1 and Longitude < X2) And (Latitude > Y1 and Latitude < Y2) Where X1 = Longitude - (distance) Where X2 = Longitude + (distance) Where Y1 = Latitude - (distance) Where Y2 = Latitude + (distance) I am working in PHP, with a MySql Database. Open to any suggestions also! :)

Now I'm looking to search for a given winner X in the table, and find out what position he is in, when the table is ordered by points. For example, if this is the table: Winners: NAME:____|__POINTS: Winner1 | 1241 Winner2 | 1199 Sally | 1000 Winner4 | 900 Winner5 | 889 Winner6 | 700 Winner7 | 667 Jacob | 623 Winner9 | 622 Winner10 | 605 Winner11 | 600 Winner12 | 586 Thomas | 455 Pamela | 434 Winner15 | 411 Winner16 | 410 These are possible inputs and outputs for what I want to do: Query: "Sally", "Winner12", "Pamela", "Jacob" Output: 3 12 14 623 How can I do this?   • magic records being deleted

    i have customised oscommerce to pull in a csv file of products, delete anything thats not with an image/proper description/proper title gets removed. The import runs on a cron job basis pulling information from a supplier, it hasnt run since yesterday but a product has disappeared- Anyone who has used oscommerce will know that, product information is stored over multiple tables. example is- products product_description and so on. the thing that has got me that the information is deleted from the product table but not from the product_description table. The product that is being deleted is a manually input one which carries a special tag/prefix on the model item of the product table. Therefore shouldn't be touched at all. Am clueles as what is going on. Is there mysql integrity checks deleting records? could there be another plugin working on oscommerce?

  • Flex / ZendAMF / PHP app, corrupted data with some linux clients problem

    Hello, i'm buiding a survey web application, using Flex for the front-end (nice forms), and a MySQL database for the storage, linked by PHP with the help of ZendAMF. I largely borrowed from this nice tutorial by Alan Gruskoff : http://digitalshowcase.biz/wordpress/?page_id=26 (The only one tutorial i've found to work with the last version of Flex). The app seems to works nicely in my tests, except on certain linux boxes : the data is somehow corrupted : there is no error message, no glitch, but the response of the forms are not what the user selected. I tried to reproduce the error on a fresh installed ubuntu VM, but it works fine. I've asked friends for some tests, and several linux users showed the same problem, on ubuntu and suse machines, all freshly updated and functionnal. The application was targeted to be the survey tool for my doctoral thesis, so i'm quite desperate here, and before i'm dumping it to start anew with php only, i'm asking here in case someone can help, thanks :-) Please excuse my english, by the way. How can I update its value?(progress) The code above in run() cannot see the pbar.

    I'm trying to bind a table of structures to a DataGridView. Loading and viewing the table is working fine but I can't edit a value and get it stored back into the table. Here's what I'm doing. I have a "primitive" data type, Real defined by public struct MyReal:IMyPrimative { public Double m_Real; //... public MyReal(String val) { m_Real = default(Double); Init(val); } //... } It gets used in a structure: public struct MyReal_Record : IMyRecord { public MyReal Freq { get; set;} MyReal_Record(String[] vals) { Init(vals); } } And the structure is used to define a table using a generic Binding List public class MyTable<S> : BindingList<S> where S: struct, IMyRecord { public Type typeofS; public MyTable() { typeofS = typeof(S); // ... } This table is used as a binding source for a grid, dynamically. private void miLoadFile_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { MyModel.Table<Real_Record> RTable = new MyModel.Table<Real_Record>(); //... Table initialized here //set up grid with virtual mode dataGridView1.DataSource = RTable; } All of this works fine and I can create RTable, initialize it and display it in a grid. On leaving the cell, CellParsing fires and the event handler is called. Everything seems to be correct going into the CellParsing handler. e.DesiredType is MyReal. e.Value is a string with the new value. After the new MyReal is created from the string, e.Value is set correctly. RowIndex and ColumnIndex are correct. ReadOnly is set false. However, when I leave the cell, the system restores the original value to the cell. I thought the UpdateCellValue would replace the value in the dataSource but I seem to be missing something.   • Why is it bad to use boolean flags in databases? And what should be used instead?

    I've been reading through some of guides on database optimization and best practices and a lot of them suggest not using boolean flags at all in the DB schema (ex http://forge.mysql.com/wiki/Top10SQLPerformanceTips). However, they never provide any reason as to why this is bad. Is it a peformance issue? is it hard to index or query properly? Furthermore, if boolean flags are bad, what should you use to store boolean values in a database? Is it better to store boolean flags as an integer and use a bitmask? This seems like it would be less readable.

  • NHibernate and hbm2dll update attribute

    Hi, i'm using NHibernate with Sdf database. In my hibernate.cfg.xml file i've set: <property name="hbm2ddl.auto" value="update"/> But this does not seem to work at all. "Update" attribute should make NHibernate generate missing tables and columns during application launch, but it does not happen. If i want missing tables geenrated I have to set hbm2dll.auto property to "create" which is not an option for me since it drops existing db content beforehand. I experienced the same problem with PostgreSql problem. Am I missing something?

I don't want to use any programming language. Is there any way by using a single query. Please give me a solution in MySQL.

  • Database caching on a shared host

    Anyone have any ideas how to increase MySQL performance on a shared host? My question has less to do with overall database performance and more to do with simply retrieving user-submitted data. Currently my database will create caches at timed intervals, and then the PHP will selectively access the static files it needs. This has given me a noticeable performance boost, but I am worried about a time in which I have so much data that having to read in big files in PHP will actually be slower. I am just looking for ideas for shared hosting solutions; I am not going to get my own server anytime soon. Thanks!

    I'm thinking about a good solution for implementing a sign up/login system that works across different domains and servers. A working example is Olx (you can register in one domain, and your login will work in the rest of domains). The scenario is that every domain (one per country) has its own database. And there will be 2 servers (for example), each one will have the 50% of the domains (and so the 50% of databases). What would you suggest to start with? Database: MySQL 5.1 Server-side language: PHP 5.3 (I will be using Symfony 1.4, so if someone has some suggestion for this framework, it will be interesting too, although it is optional)

  • calculated column or stored procedure or just php function needed ?

    I have an order table in MySQL database, having a field/column which stores the date timestamp of when the order was placed. I need to calculate when the order must be shipped. I could probably figure out how to write a function to calculate the ship date and call that when ever needed but I think, not sure it may make more sense to have the shipdate as a calculated column. That being said, I have never used a stored procedure or created a calculated field. The later I think would be best but again not sure. I used to make calculated field all the time in FMP but I've gotten away from that program.

So now I am here and confused about how to put together a website. I get HTML and CSS but still have some problems designing the site now on the other had I am having trouble trying to figure out how php and database mysql is used to put together a website. I have seen videos from lynda.com and still have no Idea after I have watched the video the basic one, one that teach you the Variables, Loops, Strings ext... ok than what happens, how do you build the website with it, that is the question I am real not understand the answer to.     I created this search mysql string and it is to literal or maybe un-literal? If I search for Dave for example it will only find items like "Dave something" and not find Dave. $queryArtist = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM artists WHERE artist LIKE '%$ArtistNameSearch%' ORDER BY artist ASC"); I know mysql_query is out dated and will change it to mysqli soon as I get this worked out.   • Strategy to structure a search index in a relational database

    I am interested in suggestions for building an efficient and robust structure for indexing products in a new database I am building (i'm using MySql) When a product is entered through the form there are three parts I am interested in indexing for searching purposes. The product title The product description Tags The most important is title, followed by tags, followed by the description. I was thinking of using the following structure CREATE TABLE `searchindex` ( `id` INT NOT NULL , `word` VARCHAR( 255 ) NOT NULL , `weighting` INT NOT NULL , `product_id` INT NOT NULL , PRIMARY KEY ( `id` ) ) Then each time a product is created I would split apart the title, description and tags (removing common words) and award them a weighting. Then it is trivial to select out the words and corresponding products and order them by weighting. Is there a better way to do this? I would be worried that this strategy would slow down over time and as the database filled up.
