• What is the best package repository for Debian ?

  Hello everybody I have a question regarding packages repository in Debian (Lenny). A new server at rackspace cloud service comes with nothing (plain system) so i had to upgrade system and install all necessary packages by myself. But the problem is that default repositories does not provide newer versions of software i need (PHP is 5.2.6, comparing to 5.2.13). In CentOS i used to get all new packages from third-party sources, which works really well till now. I have talked to guys from rackspace about it and looks like they cant provide anything except kernel headers. And i dont really want to build from source. So, whats the way to get newer software ? Any good third party sources? Thanks.

  It’s interesting to see the debate caused by the iPhone debate over Flash.  In the new version of the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement, Apple bans Flash and Monotouch: 3.3.1 — Applications may only use Documented APIs in the manner prescribed by Apple and must not use or call any private APIs. Applications must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++, or JavaScript as executed by the iPhone OS WebKit engine, and only code written in C, C++, and Objective-C may compile and directly link against the Documented APIs (e.g., Applications that link to Documented APIs through an intermediary translation or compatibility layer or tool are prohibited). • What do you call an obfuscator that isn't an obfuscator?

  SmartAssembly, formerly {smartassembly}, version 5 is now available as an Early Access Build. You can get it here: http://www.red-gate.com/MessageBoard/viewforum.php?f=116 We're having second thoughts about the name change though. It isn't that we like the curly brackets, far from it. The trouble is that the first rule of product naming is to name a product by what it does. SmartAssembly may make an assembly smarter, but that's not something people really google for. The trouble is, I can't think of a better name for it. That's because SmartAssembly really does two completely separate things: Obfuscates Sets up your assembly for the awesome exception reports which get sent to you whenever your application crashes. You may have been (un?)lucky enough to see one in reflector if you use it. This is what those exception reports look like when they arrive back with the developer: Look at all those local variables! If you ask me, this is much cooler than the obfuscation. So obviously we don't want to call it just "Red Gate Obfuscator" or something, because it doesn't do justice to the exception reporting. What would you call it?

• bash one-liner loop over directories throws errors

  I'm trying to build a bash one-liner to loop over the directories within the current directory and tar the content into unique tars, using the directory name as the tar file name. I've got the basics working (finding the directory names, and tarring them up with those names) but my loop tosses some error messages and I can't understand where it's getting the commands its trying to run. Here's the mostly-working one-liner: for f in `ls -d */`; do `tar -czvvf ${f%/}.tar.gz $f`;done The "strange" output is: -bash: drwxrwxr-x: command not found -bash: drwxr-xr-x: command not found -bash: drwxr-xr-x: command not found -bash: drwxrwxr-x: command not found What portion of the command that I'm running do I not understand and that's generating that output?

• Thoughts on web development architecture through integrating C++ in the future to a web application

  I'm looking to build a website (it's actually going to be a commercial startup) I saw this question and it really shed some light on a few things that I was hoping to understand (kudos to the op). After seeing that, it would make sense that, unless the website were required to actually have millions of hits per day, it wouldn't be a viable solution to write a C++ backend on the server side. But this got me thinking. what if it in the (unlikely) events of the future, it does go that route? The problem is that, while I'm thinking of starting this all using .Net (in the beginning) just to get something quick and easy up without a lot of hassle (in terms of learning), and then moving towards something more Open Source (such as Python/Django or RoR) later to save money and to support OSS, I'm wondering IFF the website actually becomes big, will it be a good idea to integrate a C++ backend, and use Python ontop of C++ for a strong foundation, and then mitigate HTML/CSS/AJAX/etc ontop of the backend's foundation? I guess, what I'd like to know is that, given the circumstance, if this were to happen, would it be a proper approach in terms of architecture? I'd definitely be supporting MVC as that seems to be a great way to implement a website. All in all, would one consider this rational, or are there other alternatives? I like .Net, and I'd like to use it in the beginning, because I have much more experience with that than, say, Python or PHP, and I prefer it in general, but I really do want to support OSS in the future. I suppose the sentence I'm looking for is, "is this pragmatic?"

• Cannot make Wi-Fi hotspot

  I want to make my laptop as wi-fi hotspot. To do so, I pressed button Settings-Network-Wireless-Use as Hotspot.. Then it creates a wireless network connection 'Hostspot' and connects. But it gets disconnected just after making connection. • How to improve relationships between consultants and staff programmers

  I have been a consultant for a small software consulting firm for quite some time now. Our normal business model is not staff augmentation, but such that we find clients who need assistance in building a solution of some kind and then send in a team who can build that solution, work with the existing IT staff, train all involved on supportting that solution, then move on to the next job. We, of course, are still around for any needed ongoing support. We have a great reputation in our area and have been very successful in implementing the solutions that we provide. However, I have noticed a common theme for most of our projects. When we get on-site, there is generally a "stressed" relationship between our team and many of the IT staff currently at the client. I understand completely that there may be some anxiety about our arrival and that defenses can come up when we are around. Many of the folks are understanding and easy to work with, but there are usually some who will not work well with us at all, and who can quickly become a project risk in many ways. We try to go in with open minds and good attitudes, and try NOT to be arrogent or condecending. We generally get deployed when there is a mess to clean up - but we understand that there were reasons decisions were made that got them in the bind they are...so we just try to determine the next step forward and move on. My question is this - I'd like to hear from the IT staff and programmers out there who have had consultants in - what are the things that consultants do that fire up negative feelings and attitudes? What can we do better to make the relationship better, not only in the beginning, but as the project moves forward?

• As a solo programmer, of what use can Gerrit be?

  Disclaimer: I'm aware of the questions How do I review my own code? and What advantages do continuous integration tools offer on a solo project?. I do feel that this question aims at a different set of answers though, as it is about a specific software, and not about general musings about the use of this or that practice or tech stack. I'm a solo programmer for an Eclipse RCP-based project. To be able to control myself and the quality of my software, I'm in the process of setting up a CSI stack. In this, I follow the Eclipse Common Build Infrastructure guidelines, with the exception that I will use Jenkins rather than Hudson. Sticking to these guidelines will hopefully help me in getting used to the Eclipse way of doing things, and I hope to be able to contribute some code to Eclipse in the future. However, CBI includes Gerrit, a code review software. While I think it's really helpful for teams, and I will employ it as soon as the team grows to at least two developers, I'm wondering how I could use it while I'm still solo. Question: Is there a use case for Gerrit that takes into account solo developers? Notes: I can imagine reviewing code myself after a certain amount of time to gain a little distance to it. This does complicate the workflow though, as code will only be built once it's been passed through code review. This might prove to be a "trap" as I might be tempted to quickly push bad code through Gerrit just to get it built. I'm very interested in hearing how other solo devs have made use of Gerrit.

• Winamp jump dialog

  In the most recent build of Winamp, either the Jump dialog has been ruined or there's some hidden "advanced" setting that i'm missing. The Jump dialog used to have a few options, like "Jump to file and play" "Jump to file without playing" "Queue file to start playing next, after this song finishes" But now it only shows (CANCEL) as the only button, and you can press enter on a file to start play. What happened to the JUMP & QUEUE feature? I want to jump to a file, but QUEUE it to be played next, not play it immediately.

• Is there a way to create a copy-on-write copy of a directory?

  I'm thinking of a situation where I would have something that creates a copy of a directory, tweaks a few files, and then does some processing on the result. This wold be done fairly often, maybe a few dozen times a day. (The exact use case is testing patch submissions; dupe the code, patch it, build/test/report/etc.) What I'm looking for could be done by creating a new directory structure and populating it with hard links from the origonal. However this only works if all the tools you use delete and recreate files rather than edit them in place. Is there a way to have the file system do copy-on-write for a file? Note: I'm aware that many FSs use COW at a block level (all updates are done via writes to new blocks) but this is not what I want.

  Do you need to build a demo for a customer? Why not to use Fusion Order Demo (FOD) and modify it to do some extra things. Great idea, let me install it on one of my Linux servers I said "Turns out there are a few gotchas, so here is how I installed it on a Linux server with JDeveloper on my Windows desktop." Task 1: Install Oracle JDeveloper Studio I already had JDeveloper 11.1.1.6 with SOA extensions installed so this was easy. Task 2: Install the Fusion Order Demo Application First thing to do is to obtain the latest version of the demo from OTN, I obtained the R1 PS5 release. Gotcha #1 – my winzip wouldn’t unzip the file, I had to use 7-Zip. Task 3: Install Oracle SOA Suite On the domain modify the setDomainEnv script by adding “-Djps.app.credential.overwrite.allowed=true” to JAVA_PROPERTIES and restarting the Admin Server. Also set the JAVA_HOME variable and add Ant to the path. I created a domain with separate SOA and BAM servers and also set up the Node Manager to make it easier to stop and start components.   Hi there, I have a ESX3i, build 207095 and i'm having a problem connecting to my VM's using the vmware remote console. On my PC always gives me an error about vmare-remotemks. I can do all of the tasks using VI client, but when a try to open remote console it breaks, the only thing that apears on the black screen is "unknown MKS Event". I can't find a solution to my problem, and i really need to be able to start a remote console from my PC. On my laptop the error doesn't occurs, both machines are Windows 7 x64. Thanks, JGanhão

• Can I trust that ZFS is consistent between Linux and FreeBSD?

  I'm planning to build a FreeNAS box sometime soon, but if ZFS on Linux eventually proves to be reliable, I might want to switch, just to have a more familiar OS. So I'm wondering if I can trust that the different implementations of ZFS are compatible. In other words, if I just swap out the boot disk from FreeNAS to Linux or OpenIndiana, can I trust that nothing bad will happen to my data? This may seem like a stupid question--obviously it ought to be compatible--but I'm guessing that ZFS isn't commonly used in cases where drives are moved between computers, so I'm hoping someone can provide a better answer than just "it ought to be".

  Hello, I am planning to build a PC to control a robotic platform that I am building (about 50% complete). I need more power than ATOM platform could bring, as the robot will need to do on the fly image processing to work as intended. I was considering using Athlon X4 600e as it is rated 45W Maximum output. Probably underclocked it would go lower than 30-35W. I do not I'am at very long battery life, but the 17Ah, 12V battery should keep it running for few hours. My problem is: motherboard. I am space limited so I am looking for a nice mini-itx AM3 motherboard to match the processor. It is hard to find many tests about power usage of the motherboards itself (for example, when using the same processor on different motherboards, test are usualy done in the opposite matter). Could you provide any motherboard examples or suggest what chipset to look for? Thank you in advance.

  I installed Google Chrome. This is the first thing I did after installing Ubuntu. I went into firefox, and went to chrome.google.com, and hit the button. I don't like package managers, and avoid the command line like the pox. Then, I started using Google Chrome. I went to Kongregate, and clicked on a game. It told me I didn't have flash. A few different websites told me the same. I assumed that they must have been wrong. I hit the link to Adobe, to install Flash, and it reassured me; of course, Google Chrome includes Flash. I checked my version - Chrome 5.0.375.126. Of course, I just downloaded it. I scoured the internet for solutions. None worked. Many seemed to involve re-enabling Flash, or something like that. But insofar as I can tell, there is no Flash anywhere in my Chrome. I feel like I bought a Reese's cup, and found solid chocolate. I checked in the Chrome plugin manager, and everything. A few solutions told me to copy some garbage into my command line and hit enter (as almost all solutions to problems on linux entail). I did it, reluctantly, and it did nothing. I thought Flash was supposed to come with Chrome. But it didn't. Sooooo... What gives? • Can't Use Switchable Graphics

  I can't get my switchable graphics cards working on my Acer 4820TG laptop. It came installed with Windows 7, but I've installed the RTM build of Windows 8. I have to keep the "Graphics" setting on the BIOS set to "Discrete," if it's set to "Switchable" the screen turns black after the boot animation is complete. The machine has an Intel graphics card and an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5650, and I know that the Intel card is working. I've seen it work a couple of times with Windows 8 installed, but for some reason it just doesn't anymore. I know that it's not broken, because when I plug in a secondary monitor, and move the cursor to the right, I can see it on that monitor. Are there drivers or something I need to install? I've tried a number of drivers and utilities from Acer's website, none of which have fixed the problem.

• Trouble installing php memcache extension

  I'm trying to install memcache on MAMP but I get the warning below, and when I continue it seems to complete properly. I add the line extension=memcache.so to the php.ini and restart MAMP but phpinfo() doesn't list the memcache extension. $ ./pecl install memcache downloading memcache-2.2.5.tgz ...
