  • How do I determine the linux server software/version and email server software/version running

    I just inherited this a single linux box running pop/smtp for a small office (25 users). I'm new to Linux. I think the box is running Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 as the server (this is bannered accross the screen occassionally) but not sure of the release/kernal/build etc. I need to be certain of both the server os and email linux versions in order to perform research, admin and support. Any help/pointers on how to do this is much appreciated.

  • update-grub is setting a wrong linux root partition

    Initially, Ubuntu was installed on another partition (sda5 or sda4). At some point I did manually move the root partition to sda2. Now, the problem is that whenever a new kernel is installed, the automatic regeneration of the menu.lst is using the OLD Linux partition. So I have to manually change in menu.lst the lines : root (hd0,5) into root (hd0,1) How can I configure update-grub to automatically generate menu.lst with the current Linux root partition? I assume that the (hd0,5) was written somewhere at installation, but I couldn't find it.

Having tried a few Linux Player over the past years i come to wonder, which Players you prefer and what kind of Players are out there, that you suggest are worth looking into and why!! I used Rhythmbox for a long time, but "Jamendo and Magnatune" plugin are both no longer available in 11.10 and also my covers are not shown, since i stream my music folder from a second partition. aTunes is another great Player, but there are also some flaws which i contacted the developers about.   • Global variable in a Linux shared library

    Suppose we have the following setup under Linux, .so library named "libcnt.so" and 3 user space apps: "app1", "app2", "app3". This library does 1 simple thing, it says to the app (app dynamically links the library at runtime) by how many apps it is already linked. Apps should have access to link counter. My knowledge in C and Linux is somewhat limited in this aspect, but as I understand this information should be stored in a global variable inside the shared object. Something like: in libcnt.h extern int cnt_loads; in libcnt.c int cnt_loads = 0; // where each linking increments this counter or something... So, my question is how it should be declared and/or defined inside .so library to guaranty that multiple apps from user space get the same instance of that variable counter?

  • Are Oracle Database CPU license limits enforced by software, and how do I check them?

    I've inherited a windows VM running Oracle Database 10g. Currently the VM has only one CPU assigned to it, but I can boost this up to 4 with our VMWare licenses. What I'm not yet certain about is if the Oracle Software will get upset. Are Oracle DB CPU limits enforced by software, and if so how do I find out what they? If it's just a legal enforcement I'll hunt through the mass of unsorted paperwork I have left from previous managers to find what we're licensed for, but a quick software check would be nice.

  • Clone a Hard Drive Using an Ubuntu Live CD

    Whether you’re setting up multiple computers or doing a full backup, cloning hard drives is a common maintenance task. Don’t bother burning a new boot CD or paying for new software – you can do it easily with your Ubuntu Live CD. Not only can you do this with your Ubuntu Live CD, you can do it right out of the box – no additional software needed! The program we’ll use is called dd, and it’s included with pretty much all Linux distributions. dd is a utility used to do low-level copying – rather than working with files, it works directly on the raw data on a storage device. Note: dd gets a bad rap, because like many other Linux utilities, if misused it can be very destructive. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, you can easily wipe out an entire hard drive, in an unrecoverable way. Of course, the flip side of that is that dd is extremely powerful, and can do very complex tasks with little user effort. If you’re careful, and follow these instructions closely, you can clone your hard drive with one command. We’re going to take a small hard drive that we’ve been using and copy it to a new hard drive, which hasn’t been formatted yet. To make sure that we’re working with the right drives, we’ll open up a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and enter in the following command sudo fdisk –l We have two small drives, /dev/sda, which has two partitions, and /dev/sdc, which is completely unformatted. We want to copy the data from /dev/sda to /dev/sdc. Note: while you can copy a smaller drive to a larger one, you can’t copy a larger drive to a smaller one with the method described below. Now the fun part: using dd. The invocation we’ll use is: sudo dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdc In this case, we’re telling dd that the input file (“if”) is /dev/sda, and the output file (“of”) is /dev/sdc. If your drives are quite large, this can take some time, but in our case it took just less than a minute. If we do sudo fdisk –l again, we can see that, despite not formatting /dev/sdc at all, it now has the same partitions as /dev/sda.  Additionally, if we mount all of the partitions, we can see that all of the data on /dev/sdc is now the same as on /dev/sda. Note: you may have to restart your computer to be able to mount the newly cloned drive. And that’s it…If you exercise caution and make sure that you’re using the right drives as the input file and output file, dd isn’t anything to be scared of. Unlike other utilities, dd copies absolutely everything from one drive to another – that means that you can even recover files deleted from the original drive in the clone!   • It's not just “Single Sign-on” by Steve Knott (aurionPro SENA)

    It is true that Oracle Enterprise Single Sign-on (Oracle ESSO) started out as purely an application single sign-on tool but as we have seen in the previous articles in this series the product has matured into a suite of tools that can do more than just automated single sign-on and can also provide rapidly deployed, cost effective solution to many demanding password management problems. In the last article of this series I would like to discuss three cases where customers faced password scenarios that required more than just single sign-on and how some of the less well known tools in the Oracle ESSO suite “kitbag” helped solve these challenges. Case #1 One of the issues often faced by our customers is how to keep their applications compliant. I had a client who liked the idea of automated single sign-on for most of his applications but had a key requirement to actually increase the security for one specific SOX application. For the SOX application he wanted to secure access by using two-factor authentication with a smartcard. The problem was that the application did not support two-factor authentication. The solution was to use a feature from the Oracle ESSO suite called authentication manager. This feature enables you to have multiple authentication methods for the same user which in this case was a smartcard and the Windows password.  Within authentication manager each authenticator can be configured with a security grade so we gave the smartcard a high grade and the Windows password a normal grade. Security grading in Oracle ESSO can be configured on a per application basis so we set the SOX application to require the higher grade smartcard authenticator. The end result for the user was that they enjoyed automated single sign-on for most of the applications apart from the SOX application. When the SOX application was launched, the user was required by ESSO to present their smartcard before being given access to the application. Case #2 Another example solving compliance issues was in the case of a large energy company who had a number of core billing applications. New regulations required that users change their password regularly and use a complex password. The problem facing the customer was that the core billing applications did not have any native user password change functionality. The customer could not replace the core applications because of the cost and time required to re-develop them. With a reputation for innovation aurionPro SENA were approached to provide a solution to this problem using Oracle ESSO. Oracle ESSO has a password expiry feature that can be triggered periodically based on the timestamp of the users’ last password creation therefore our strategy here was to leverage this feature to provide the password change experience. The trigger can launch an application change password event however in this scenario there was no native change password feature that could be launched therefore a “dummy” change password screen was created that could imitate the missing change password function and connect to the application database on behalf of the user. Oracle ESSO was configured to trigger a change password event every 60 days. After this period if the user launched the application Oracle ESSO would detect the logon screen and invoke the password expiry feature. Oracle ESSO would trigger the “dummy screen,” detect it automatically as the application change password screen and insert a complex password on behalf of the user. After the password event had completed the user was logged on to the application with their new password. All this was provided at a fraction of the cost of re-developing the core applications. Case #3 Recent popular initiatives such as the BYOD and working from home schemes bring with them many challenges in administering “unmanaged machines” and sometimes “unmanageable users.” In a recent case, a client had a dispersed community of casual contractors who worked for the business using their own laptops to access applications. To improve security the around password management the security goal was to provision the passwords directly to these contractors. In a previous article we saw how Oracle ESSO has the capability to provision passwords through Provisioning Gateway but the challenge in this scenario was how to get the Oracle ESSO agent to the casual contractor on an unmanaged machine. The answer was to use another tool in the suite, Oracle ESSO Anywhere. This component can compile the normal Oracle ESSO functionality into a deployment package that can be made available from a website in a similar way to a streamed application. The ESSO Anywhere agent does not actually install into the registry or program files but runs in a folder within the user’s profile therefore no local administrator rights are required for installation. The ESSO Anywhere package can also be configured to stay persistent or disable itself at the end of the user’s session. In this case the user just needed to be told where the website package was located and download the package. Once the download was complete the agent started automatically and the user was provided with single sign-on to their applications without ever knowing the application passwords. Finally, as we have seen in these series Oracle ESSO not only has great utilities in its own tool box but also has direct integration with Oracle Privileged Account Manager, Oracle Identity Manager and Oracle Access Manager. Integrated together with these tools provides a complete and complementary platform to address even the most complex identity and access management requirements. So what next for Oracle ESSO? “Agentless ESSO available in the cloud” – but that will be a subject for a future Oracle ESSO series!

  • Suspend not working after kernel update on an HP Envy14 1050

    I just update ubuntu 12.04 to the kernel 3.2.0-30 and together with it a lot of packeges in the system. I am running it on an HP Envy14 1050. When I first made a fresh install of the clean ubuntu 12.04 I had the problem that when restoring from suspend the screen was black, although some backlight was there. I could fix it following this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/989674/comments/20. Now, after the update the black screen after suspend has reappeared but with no backlight at all and the led in the caps lock key blinking. The laptop is using a ATI radeon 5600 with the privative drivers. During the update process there was an error with depmod . You can see the /var/log/dist-upgrade/apt-term.log file at the end. UPDATE: suspend is not working at all. The problem is not when restoring from suspend, but when I try to suspend the system it gets blocked and the fan running. Only option is to press power button. I've seen opinions that wackamole is better than Heartbeat because it's peer-based. Is that valid? The last release of wackamole was 2.5 years ago. Is it still being maintained or active? What would you recommend for HA setup for web/application/database servers?

  • How to run infinitely script in background on Linux?

    I have a PHP script with infinite loop. I need this script running forever. So, I run php /path/to/script.php > /dev/null & And it works in background in my current user's security context. But when I close terminal window (log off), of course, CentOS Linux kills my program. I see two guesses: run from a different user in background or make a daemon. I need help in each situation. Thanks a lot!

  • REDUX: How to overcome an incompatibility between the ksh on Linux vs. that installed on AIX/Solaris

    I have uncovered another problem in the effort that we are making to port several hundreds of ksh scripts from AIX, Solaris and HPUX to Linux. See here for the previous problem. This code: #!/bin/ksh if [ -a k* ]; then echo "Oh yeah!" else echo "No way!" fi exit 0 (when run in a directory with several files whose name starts with k) produces "Oh yeah!" when called with the AT&T ksh variants (ksh88 and ksh93). On the other hand it produces and error message followed by "No way!" on the other ksh variants (pdksh, MKS ksh and bash). Again, my question are: Is there an environment variable that will cause pdksh to behave like ksh93? Failing that: Is there an option on pdksh to get the required behavior?

    Background We want to run an FTP server on a Red Hat Enterprise OS. The problem is, the machine we have does not have an Ethernet port/interface (please don't ask why; it's just a project requirement). We only have a serial port. Question Is there COTS / open source software that I can use to make serial port "look" like a an Ethernet port? My project is commercial. We run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3.   • How do I move a Java JFrame partially off my Linux desktop?

    I'm writing a Java application with movable frames, and I've come across a quirk in Linux. I'm running GNOME 2.16.0 under CentOS. When I use JFrame.setBounds to set the bounds to any location that's half off the screen, it actually sets the location of the frame to be as close as possible to the bounds specified while still staying completely on the screen. This is confusing because other non-Java windows can move half off the screen. How do I tell Java to tell GNOME to actually put the frame where I specify, even if that's half off the screen?
