• No GUI after upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10 (boots to command line)

  I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (network upgrade using the update manager, from 9.04 which had different graphics related problems) and when I try to boot into it all I get a small Ubuntu logo, flickering text and then the tty1 command line with a logon prompt. startx gives following error: Fatal server error: no screens found I traced down a tutorial that said I needed the latest graphics drivers (Gigabyte ATI Radeon 4650 HD installed with 9.10 catalyst drivers) so I did using the 'sh' command and a USB stick (I have a working Windows partition) and it installed fine but did not fix the problem. Edit: Thanks to UK and Arjan van Bentem below I was able to understand the full error message of start x: Parse error on lone 2 of /etc/X11/xorg.conf 'nameserver' is not a valid keyword in this section Fatal server error: no screens found This has nothing to do with a graphical error (sorry if I misled anyone) but the xorg.conf file has 3 lines in it and lines 2-3 have an entry 'nameserver'. Using the nano command I commented out (using a # before the entries) the nameservers and can now boot Ubuntu. Thanks to everyone for their help.

• mime-attachment incompatibility on forwarded messages from android to an iphone

  A couple of guys got the evo android in the office. I got an iphone. When I receive a forwarded email from one of those phones, the forwarded piece comes as a mime-attachment that the iphone cannot open. I also tried this with a motorola droid and got the same result. I am not sure if the issue is the android sending the message on the wrong format or the iphone not being able to understand a mime type that it should... Has anyone experienced this, and, most importantly, found a fix/workaround? Thanks.

• scanner no longer working windows 7

  I have a windows 7 64 pro machine that for some reason no longer works with a brother all in one printer/scanner, when I try to scan. This happened seemingly out of nowhere. Printing still works. When I try to scan from photoshop, photoshop crashes. When I try to scan from device manager (which takes a really long time to access the printer) I get an error saying: "operation could not be completed. (error 0x00000015). the device is not ready. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the printer and drivers. I have also run the brother driver cleaner and then reinstalled and get the same results every time. I had access to another HP all in one. And very strangely When I setup this new printer I have a similar issue that happens. I am able to print but when I try to scan from the HP tool nothing pops up. So my thoughts are it is something to do with the twain driver? But I don't know what to do or check. Any help is appreciated.

  I have few DVD-RAM disks and when using udftools, specifically sudo mkudffs --media-type=dvdram /dev/sr0 where /dev/sr0 is my DVD-RAM drive, I get trying to change type of multiple extents and nothing happens. What should I do? • http://localhost:8080 is not working on running apacher Server through XAMPP

  I am unable to configure a PHP/MySQL/Apache environment on my local machine using XAMPP. In my xampp control panel the Apache and MySQL status is as started, but localhost is not working. I have tried the following method but still i am unable to execute: I tried to reinstall after uninstalling several time. I changed the "Listen 80" to Listen localhost:80, localhost:8080, 127.0.0.1:80,127.0.0.1:8080, MySystemIP:80/8080 and tried to execute the relevant url in my browser. I executed the netstat -noa and tasklist and found Apache is is using Port80. Skype is also not using the port80. I edited the firewall to allow port80. Also disabled the firewall. Is there any other solution to fix my problem. I remember 8 months back everything worked properly. Now when i try to reinstall xampp the issue raised it. I am Using Win-xp os. Thanks in advance

• What are some alternatives to word processing with Markdown?

  I've used MS Word-style editors for a long time, but I never got used to how unintuitive and cumbersome they are. I'm not talking specifically about MS Word, but also other editors that seem to mimic Word, like OpenOffice, NeoOffice, etc. I've found myself preferring to write in Markdown (much like on this site). I've found a few good Markdown editors, and I like using them a lot more than using Word-style editors. Here is what they generally look like: As you can see, it works much differently than a Word-style editor. This is a generally cleaner way of writing, since formatting is done right in the text, and is extremely simple to use (no highlighting some text, then clicking a button in some menu you have to find). Although editing text this way is great, I've realized that the syntax can only be used for very specific needs (bullets, numbered lists, headings and sub-headings, bold, italic, and some other common ones). However, many features are missing. Here are some features that would be nice in a word processor: Tables. Indenting paragraphs. Good image support (you can link to images, but not add them, since Markdown is just text). More simple to use than Word and its cronies. Cross-platform. Some of these can be fixed with in-line HTML, but nobody wants to do that. It seems Markdown was designed for editing text on the internet. Is there a similar setup that works better for desktop word processors?

• Reconfiguring, then deleting obsolete pagefile.sys from C: in one go using a batch script

  I'm trying to set up an automated script for a Windows XP installer. It's a batch script that runs on first boot after installation, and among the things I'm trying to accomplish, is removing the pagefile from C: entirely, and putting a 16-768 MB pagefile on D: instead. Here're my batch file instructions: echo === Creating new page file on D: ... cscript %windir%\system32\pagefileconfig.vbs /create /i 16 /m 768 /vo d: >nul echo. echo === Removing old page file from C: ... cscript %windir%\system32\pagefileconfig.vbs /delete /vo C: attrib -s -h c:\pagefile.sys del c:\pagefile.sys My problem is that while these are sane commands, the removal of the pagefile on C: requires me to reboot before those commands succeed.b Or, in other words — I have to first create the D: pagefile, then reboot and delete the c:\pagefile.sys file, or I'm stuck with a c:\pagefile.sys file which isn't even recognized by Windows itself (it'll just say that there's a page file on D:, and that C: has no pagefile at all). Obviously because already some pages are written to the C:\pagefile.sys file. So how would I go about accomplishing this in one go? Or, in two gos, if this is "batch scriptable" :) TIA, Daniel :) EDIT: I should probably clarify: Running those commands above are all valid, but they'll only succeed fully if I re-run the "attrib" and "del" commands at next boot. The C: pagefile is in use at the time, so I cannot delete the file it uses, and Windows itself won't remove it when I configure it to not use C: as a page file drive. Instead, it'll leave an orphaned c:\pagefile.sys file behind (which is really large). I don't necessarily need this to work in one go, registering the last two commands to run after a reboot would also be great :)

• Excel 2010 filter arrow not showing text values

  I have an odd problem on a tracker spreadsheet I use. All the columns have a filter, but when you click on the filter arrow it doesn't show you a breakdown of all the text values for that column. All it shows is the usual 'sort A to Z/Z to A', but the bottom half of the pop-up screen is blank, where normally you have a list of text values that you can further filter by putting a tick next to each. It only displays (Select All) which you can tick, but its pointless as the column has selected all text values and hasn't been further filtered, which is what I need to do.

• Intermittent CNAME forwarding

  I host a personal website on an old desktop that is LAMP based. Since I have a dynamic IP, I use no-ip to make sure I have a working domain name at all times. I also have a domain I have bought on GoDaddy where I have a CNAME record forwarding the www subdomain to my no-ip domain. At all times, I can connect to my website through the no-ip domain without issue. For the past several weeks, I never had an issue using the GoDaddy domain to connect (ssh or https). As of today, however, the GoDaddy domain only works for about 10 minutes at a time. I get server not found errors most of the time. Also, if I happen to be using the GoDaddy domain for an ssh connection, the connection will freeze. I have attempted to run tests using a couple of online DNS check websites, but have not gotten any errors at any time. I also contacted GoDaddy support but they had no issues connecting to the website, and therefore did not see any issues. I would like advice on how I could debug/resolve this issue. Since the problem appeared without me changing anything on my end, I hope it will resolve itself, but knowing the cause in case it happens again would be preferable. EDIT: I changed the configuration in GoDaddy to create an A (Host) that points at my current IP. This works fine, so I can access the site through the GoDaddy domain without the preceding www. I am currently waiting for a new CNAME record to propagate that points the www subdomain at the main host, rather than my no-ip domain.

• Windows 7 - mysteriously missing free HDD space

  I have Windows7 installed on 50GB (Oops, it should have been 45GB, sorry) partition, and every now and then it gets full, and I have to resize that partition. I always thought it is quite normal. But it happened again today and this time, I'm sure it is not normal, because since last resizing (35GB 45GB) I did not install any new apps or whatever. Also, sum of sizes off all, including hidden & system, root folders and files is ~18GB, yet windows is indicating that all 50GB are used up... Any idea what is going on? EDIT: Great tools everyone! (SourceForge appears to be offline at the moment, I'll check WinDirStat later) Alas, non of them solved my problem just yet... Screenshot from SpaceSniffer: On the right there is some kind of "Unknows Space", any idea what that could be? EDIT2: After those two apps failing to help much I didn't expect it, but WinDirStat actually helped. It showed that those missing 27GB are in my Temp folder (Well, that should have been my first guess anyway). There I found hundreds of ~100MB files, named like HTT????.tmp. After some googling it appears to be a problem with ESET NOD32 antivirus and it's ThreatSense feature. Thank you all for help! :)

• Diagnosing linux issues with ipod syncing in Ubuntu

  Issue: I am currently using Ubuntu 9.10 with a 5th generation Ipod 60 GB Black video classic. In general, it seems that Ubuntu can always detect the usb hd and displays it on my desktop. However, some applications seem to detect the ipod (e.g. Rythymbox and gtkpod do but Banshee does not) and some don't. I narrowed down the banshee issue to a bug that requires Nautilus to be restarted (although it would be nice to not have to do this). Also, Whenever I sync between these applications, it appears that everything is working fine during the sync but when I disconnect the ipod and browse, all of the songs seem to be there but the playlists are not. If I reconnect the ipod, in banshee specifically it sees the space usage as "other". What I am looking for is some way to at least understand what is and is not working OR directions to some where that can help me learn what's going on. I have already tried: -IRC. Either the channel is too general (e.g. #ubuntu) or no one is ever one (e.g. #banshee) -The web. Most of what I've found is too specific to one particular bug or too general. Any thoughts?

• Using native resolution on external display results in stretched, out of bounds image

  I have an HP min 311 netbook with Windows XP, which I've connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2043BW display via the supplied analog cable. The external display's native res is 1680x1050, which the netbook's ION GPU supports. I've configured the external display as the single display (no cloning or any such fancy stuff). However, once I set the native res, the image just stretches out. It looks squashed, and it goes outside the monitor's edges. In contrast, lower resolutions manage to stay within the monitor's display edges, though obviously they are skewed in some way (vertically or horizontally). BTW, the only res which seems to be displayed relatively clearly (it's the least blurry) is 1280x720. I tried looking all over the web for an explanation/advice but could not find any. I already played with the settings on the external display itself several times. So either it's not that, or I missed something. Has someone run into this issue? I need help.

I have come across a Windows XP machine that is sending unwanted p2p traffic. I have done a 'netstat -b' command and explorer.exe is sending out the traffic. When I kill this process the traffic stops and obviously Windows Explorer dies. Here is the header of the stream from the Wireshark dump (x.x.x.x) is the machines IP. What does malware achieve by sending p2p traffic? I know to fix the problem the easiest way is to reinstall Windows but I want to get to the bottom of it first, just out of interest.   Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • Suggestions for sharing and using data between Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot

  Note: TL;DR, scroll to bottom for summary. I recently set up my computer for a dual boot between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. My current drive setup is as follows. | A1 | A2 | | B1 | B2 | B3 | A1: 100 mb, windows 7 "System Reserved" boot partition A2: 230 gb, data section, this one needs to be shared between the operating systems B1: 125 gb, windows 7 OS B2: 123 gb, ubuntu OS B3: 2gb, linux swap space Pretty much i want to have my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc accessible from both operating systems. My first attempt involved making the data (a2) partition NTFS, and moving my home folder from ubuntu to the data partition. However, as I read NTFS does not work nice with permission, and it messed up my home folder. My next idea is one of the following: 1) format the data partition to ext2/3/4 and move my home folder from linux there, and get a driver to read ext partitions in windows 7. The problem with that is that most of the ext drivers/software are not compatible with windows 7 or do not integrate with windows explorer (I really don't want to open a separate software window just to access my data, plus it's probably not compatible with other software.) http://www.fs-driver.org/ looks promising, but I'm not sure how it works with ext4 and windows 7 (not officially supported, when trying in vista compatibility mode, it tells me I need to format the ext drive to use it). My next idea, 2) keep the home folder in ubuntu where it is, but create symlinks for the Documents, Music, etc folders to an NTFS formatted Data (A2) partition, and add those locations to the windows 7 libraries. I'm not totally sure how the permissions would work out, but it should be fine since it's only the documents, music, etc and not the important config files in the rest of /home/user/. Correct me if I'm wrong. Currently, symlinks is my best idea, although i'm not sure how it will work. Any suggestions, additions to my ideas, links, pointers, whatever would be greatly appreciated. Even if it means i should reformat both my drives and repartition (2 250gb drives if you want to suggest a setup for that), I won't be too opposed if that's the best suggestion (I've gone through the format/install/format/reinstall process 5 times over the past 3 days, once more won't hurt me). TL;DR, summary: I have two hard drives. One is partitioned for Ubuntu and Windows 7, the second one I want accessible to both operating systems to store documents, music, pictures, videos, etc. Suggestions on how to set up the data drive please =) P.S. bonus if I can get an apache server document root folder working between the two OS's as well (permissions could become very complicated, so don't worry too much about that) P.P.S. • XP Mode in Windows 7 professional recently ceased to work

  I have used Windows XP Mode in Windows Professional 7 once a week for around 2 years to run Quicken 98. About 2 weeks ago the XP Mode completely stopped working. I get different responses when I try to launch. I can sometimes see a launch screen for XP (which I never used to get) which then hangs Sometimes I just get a black screen Sometimes I get an error message in a cmd like interface that says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt \system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file. I have noticed that in the tools tab at the top of the screen "enable integration features" is greyed out. Any recommendations? Ian

  Hi I've got 8GB RAM on my laptop running Ubuntu 12.04. I added following record to /etc/fstab tmpfs /media/ramdisk tmpfs defaults,noatime,mode=1777 0 0 What exactly it means? I have tested that I can save 4GB to ram disk at most. Why exactly 4GB? Where did the computer get this number from? And what happens when I don't use that ram disk for a while and when the directory /media/ramdisk is empty? Does it mean that my system can use whole 8GB ram? And what happens when the system runs out of ram? Will the most rarely used things be moved to swap? And should I turn of swap if I think my system will never need it? Will turning off the swap make my computer faster? And can I even remove the swap partition? And will the hibernation work correctly then?

• Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

  I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk).   So I've got a Ruby on Rails application that I am trying to run (in development) on Snow Leopard. I've got it working on my Ubuntu computer, but now I need to get my Snow Leopard environment set up. Originally, I installed the MySQL 2.8.1 Ruby Gem and was running into this issue: uninitialized constant MysqlCompat::MysqlRes But thanks to this tutorial I was able to resolve it by running this command and installing a previous version of the Gem: export ARCHFLAGS="-arch i386 -arch x86_64" ;sudo gem install --no-rdoc --no-ri -v=2.7 mysql -- --with-mysql-dir=/usr/local/mysql --with-mysql-config=/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysql_config Now that I've resolved that issue, I'm running into a different error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' This happens when I try to run rake db:migrate as well as when the server is running. How can I resolve this issue?
