• Where should I store my application data?

  I have an application that needs to store data. Currently, I am using the built-in Application Settings to do it, but it only gives me two choices: application and user scopes. Ideally, I want a "local" scope that allows the application to run under another user and still find its data rather than recreate it for that user. The application scope can do this, but it's read only. The application data will be changed by the user. It's OK if only the administrator is allowed to make changes to the data. As you probably can guess, I have an administration tool that allows the user to change the data and windows service runner that reads the data and does something with it. It would be great if the windows service runner access the data created by the administration tool.

• sharepoint approval workflow loop

  Hi All, I am trying to set up a Approval workflow when item created and item updated event on a list and then update the approval status as workflow complete. Now when I create a new Item the workflow kicks off as expected. When I edit the same item and approve the item new workflow get started as the item get edit. It seems to be workflow falls in loop if I se an Approval workflow on new item created and Item Edit events. I Google for it and I found that Microsoft has come up with hotfix to overcome this issue. I have installed it on my machine but still the problem persist. Is there are any prerequisites needed for this ? or any other service pack or specific version of service pack needs be installed on machine to make this hotfix running. Can any one tell me how shold I overcome this issue...? Thanks in Advance Sachin

• Consuming SharePoint Web Services fails when behind Proxy server

  Hi All, I've seen a number of post about consuming Web Services from behind a proxy server, but none that seams to address this problem. I'm building a desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. The normal -dhttp.proxyHost ... settings does not seam to help any. But I have found that by creating a ProxySelector class and setting it as default, I can regain access to the authentication web service, but I still can't retrieve the list of web sites from the SharePoint server. Anyone have any experience on how to make this work?   Using the new Visual Studio 2010 SDK developing against the MEF based editor structure there's a question: How can I use the MEF editor interfaces to handle snippet behavior in IntelliSense? The ICompletionSession itself is not a problem (e.g. get the available snippets) rather filling the snippet, handling the subsequently expected actions like tab, enter behavior, text replacement, etc. Is there any way to do that without a language service? Checking the built-in behavior in Visual Studio base editor implementation they built the MEF interfaces on top of a set of language service based objects.

  Social networking is great, but there is something fundamentally wrong with the way social networking is implemented today in most popular services. I'll put it in this example: Imagine that there is no SMTP, and consequently, it is globally assumed and accepted that you can only send email to addresses on the same domain. The result would be the emergence of a single email service, let's call it emailbook.com, which we all have to subscribe to, if we really want to communicate with the world. This is what's happening with social networking today. You HAVE to use the same service your fiends/colleagues are using to talk to them. I would like to be able to put up my own social site, invite my friends who trust me, share amongst us, but still be able to share with the world at large. What are the chances of this scenario happening in the future? What does it take?

• My sound stopped working today, how can I fix it?

  This seems to be a problem with pulseaudio. I was logged in over VNC on my phone and started playing a video this caused X to crash (as sometimes happens). I restarted and suddenly the sound doesn't work. I have a Intel HDA/Realtek ALC889 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller alsamixer is detecting this just fine. PulseAudio doesn't detect this alsa device so is using auto_null as the default sink (logs below). When I properly kill PulseAudio (tell it not to auto-start) direct ALSA communication with the sound card works just fine. speaker-test, for example, works. So the hardware and ALSA layers are fine IMO. In the logs, it seems that the card might be "busy" but I really don't know how or why it would be now (and never before). Is there an ALSA lock file somewhere that it still there because of my crash? I just ran sudo fuser /dev/snd/* and saw this: oli@bert:~$ sudo fuser /dev/snd/* /dev/snd/controlC0: 1884 /dev/snd/pcmC0D0c: 1884m /dev/snd/timer: 1884 A look at the process list (ps aux | grep 1884) tells me process 1884 is arecord -c 1 -f S16_LE -r 8000 -t raw. I'm in a very annoying situation where I don't know what is going on and don't know how to find out. I'm open to all suggestions to get this working again. Fire away. • Limiting game loop to exactly 60 tics per second (Android / Java)

  So I'm having terrible problems with stuttering sprites. My rendering and logic takes less than a game tic (16.6667ms) However, although my game loop runs most of the time at 60 ticks per second, it sometimes goes up to 61 - when this happens, the sprites stutter. I also tried to change the timer used to Nanotime and skiptics to 1000000000/ticksPerSecond, but everything just ran at about 300 ticks per seconds. All I'm attempting to do is to limit my game loop to 60 - what is the best way to guarantee that my game updates never happen at more than 60 times a second? Please note, I do realise that very very old devices might not be able to handle 60 although I really don't expect this to happen - I've tested it on the lowest device I have and it easily achieves 60 tics. So I'm not worried about a device not being able to handle the 60 ticks per second, but rather need to limit it - any help would be appreciated.

• TCP Flow control in AS3?

  I am currently working on a Flash socket client for a pre-existing service/standard. The service uses TCP flow control to throttle itself and the Flash socket is reading in everything as fast as it can despite not being able to process it as fast as it's being taken in. This causes the bytesAvailable on the socket to keep increasing and the server never knows that the client has fallen behind. In short, is there any way to limit the size of bytesAvailable for a Flash Socket object or throttle it in some other way? Note: Rewriting the server isn't a viable option at the current time as it's a standard and the client's utility drops immensely if server-side changes are needed

• Android popup style activity which sits on top of any other apps

  What I want to create is a popup style application. I have a service in the background - something arrives on the queue and i want an activity to start to inform the user - very very similar to the functionality of SMSPopup app. So I have the code where something arrives on the queue and it calls my activity. However for some reason the activity always shows on top of the originally started activity instead of just appearing on the main desktop of the android device. As an example: I have the main activity which is shown when the application is run I have the service which checks queue I have a popup activity. When i start the main activity it starts the service - I can now close this. I then have something on the queue and it creates the popup activity which launches the main activity with the popup on top of it :S How do I stop this and have it behave as i want...   I have a web service that is working fine in one environment but not in another. The web service gets document meta data from SharePoint, it running on a server where I cant debug but with logging I confirmed that the method enters and exits successfully. What could be the reason for the errors? • Using an XML Catalog with a Java library that uses JAXP internally

  I'm using the Apache web service xml rpc library to make requests to an rpc service. Somewhere in that process is a xml document with a DTD reference to http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd, which the library attempts to download when parsing the XML. That download fails with a 503 status code because the w3c is blocking repeated downloads of this largely static document from Java clients. The solution is XML Catalogs to locally cache the DTD. However, while I can find examples of setting an EntityHandler on a JAXP SAXParser instance directly to enable catalog parser support, I don't actually have access to the underlying parser here. It's just being used by the xml rpc library. Is there any way I can set a global property or something that will tell JAXP to use XML catalogs?

And obviously, I would not like to put the annotation on both service definition and implementation (DRY). I know there are cases in Spring AOP where aspects are triggered by annotations one interface methods (e.g. Transactional). Is there a special syntax here or is it just plain impossible out of the box. PS: I have not posted my spring config, as it seems to be working just fine. • How to make a Webservice request follow a redirect?

  My application neeeds to access a third part web service. Of late, they have introduced a load balancer, which redirects to the server. Because of this the webservice gets a 302 - Redirect error as response. In the SOAPUI, I was able to enable a property called "Follow Redirect", and because of this service followed the redirect and served by the server. Now is there a similar propety that can be turned on in the code, which would make the webservice follow the request? (The calling code is java and the webservice is in .net)

• Windows 7 interfering with smart cards

  I have an application that uses the PC/SC API to communicate with smart cards. On Windows 7, I get strange results: the data returned from the cards is inconsistent and invalid with certain commands. If I disable the Smart Card Plug and Play service in group policy then everything works fine. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is there any way to get the smart card plug and play service to play nice? It would be nice to not have to disable it...

  I'm developing a System Preference Pane that runs a background application. I'm planning on codesigning the background application and I'll be using the kill flag of codesign (http://gemma.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/codesign.1.html). From my understanding, this kill flag will not allow the background application to be run if it's signature doesn't match. My problem with this approach is that it doesn't provide any feedback to the user and, for somewhat reason, the application gets corrupted, it will refuse to launch without any information. I'd like to use the Code Signing Service from the System Preference Pane to check the validity of the background application. However, I couldn't find how to use it to check the validity of an external file. Is this possible using the Code Signing Service or should I NSTask codesign directly? My application is targeted for 10.6 so it doesn't matter which I use. Thank you!

• Xubuntu 12.04 : Random boot to black screen

  My xubuntu 12.04 has worked flawlessly since install in September. However, lately I randomly have the following boot issue : The computer boots to grub, and after choosing xubuntu either boots normally or boots to a black screen. Here are some observations I have made : The black screen seems to happen randomly. The black screen does not seem to happen in safe mode (- nomodeset in grub). The black screen does not allow me to ctrl + alt + F1-6 into a terminal. The black screen allows me to use SysRq keys (Alt + SysRq + K does not work though). The black screen often happens on first boot in several hours and the computer usually boots normally after a RSEINUB. When the computer boots I get "SP5100 TCO timer: mmio address 0xfec000f0 already in use" at startup and "Could not write bytes: broken pipe" at shutdown. However research on these errors did not yield answers to my particular issue. Comparing Xorg.0.log (successful boot) and Xorg.0.log.old (black screen), and reading the answers to similar problem, it seems that I might have a X driver issue. However the system worked flawlessly since lately. Additional info on my system : ACER AO722 C62kk Operating system : 3.2.0-31-generic ubuntu Edit : I made a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 x64, the issue is still there ... (I have a separate /home so config. files were not erased). Edit 2 : I followed troubleshooting blank screen, so my new observations are without quiet and splash in grub : When the system boots normally, the screen goes black after grub then lights up and displays text information then goes to login screen. (After that the desktop starting time vary substantially, which is new and may be a separate issue ?). When the boot fails, after grub the screen goes black, lights up, goes black, lights up again and most times goes black again. At this point it responds to Alt+SysReq K by lighting up but no more, and has to be rebooted through Alt+SysReq+ RSEINUB. Thank you for your time and attention in advance ! Thibaud Ruelle

Question is about distribution of the app. It looks like I need to install the app's config file with the EXE, however I don't want that because the config files shows the actual url of the web service which is not whatt I want. So, is it possible to use a webservice in a WinForm app and only have to install the resulting EXE?

• WCF issues with KnownType for Dictionary

  Hi, I have a service that implements the following DataMember: [DataMember] public Dictionary<string, List<IOptionQueryResult>> QueryResultItems { get; set; } I have the class "OptionQuerySingleResult" which inherits from IOptionQueryResult. Now, I understand that I need to make the OptionQueryResult type "known" to the Service and thus tried to add the KnownType in various ways: [KnownType(typeof(Dictionary<string, OptionQuerySingleResult[]>))] [KnownType(typeof(Dictionary<string, List<OptionQuerySingleResult>>))] [KnownType(typeof(OptionQuerySingleResult)] However, none of those approaches worked and on the client side I'm either getting that deserialization failed or the server simply aborted the request, causing a connection aborted error. Does anyone have an idea on what's the proper way to get this to work? I'd like to add, the if I change the QueryResultItems definition to use the concrete type, instead of the interface, everything works just fine. Thanks, Tom

The question is about how to do real-time GPS tracking system things; if we have the following scenario: Rather than connecting a GPS receiver to a PC, the user will have a mobile device with an integrated GPS receiver. Location data will be sent over mobile network using GPRS data connection to a server side. The data will be processed and a KML path file will be created and updated on time intervals and used to track the user using Google Earth. The question is: what is the best method to accomplish this scenario for the server side; is it a web service, a web application, a windows service, a windows application or what exactly? Taking into account that the system will serve a number of users simultaneously, and that more users may use the system in the future(scalability issues).   Hello, I have been doing more client-side development, managing the UI on the client and submitting data to the server via web service calls. I'm not looking for implementation details, but was curious on developer preferences for displaying an operation in process and what to display when completed or even failed. As a for instance, just for clarification sake, what if you are submitting a profile form's data to a web service. I want to display that something's happening to the user, and give them a message that the form submitted successfully. I've in the past used a twitter-style message (that appears at the top), modal dialogs... I was curious what worked for others and any advice (what did the users like/not like, etc.). • Unable to use Client Application Services with custom MembershipProvider.

  Hi, I have a Windows-Forms Application that I configured to use with an ASP.NET Service that is an Authentication service using a custom MembershipProvider. When I call Membership.CreateUser in the Windows Application a NotSupportedException is thrown telling: "Specified method is not supported.". I tried creating a web page in the website and test the MembershipProvider, everything works just fine when woeking from within the website. Any ideas or link for how to use custom (not SqlMembershipProvider) MembershipProvider will be really appreciated! Edit: The method ValidateUser does work. The overriden CreateUser doesn't work I tried Override Sub CreateUser(.......) As MembershipUser Return New User() End Sub But I still get the same excetption as before.
