  • Why is hosted storage so expensive?

    - by Mark Henderson
There are many questions on Server Fault asking why server storage is so expensive. e.g. Why do I have to pay 50 bucks a month per extra gigabyte of storage or Our file server is always running out of space, why doesn't our sysadmin just throw an extra 1TB drive in there? These questions usually come from people who lack an understanding of how enterprise-level storage works and what influences the price. This question is designed to be the "question to end all questions" regarding the price of enterprise storage.

  • What are MVP and MVC and what is the difference?

    - by Wolfbyte
When looking beyond the RAD (drag-drop and configure) way of building User Interfaces that many tools encourage you are likely to come across 2 design patterns called Model-View-Controller and Model-View-Presenter. My question has two parts to it: What issues do these patterns address? How are they similar? How are they different?

  • Is it ok to reference .Net assemblies liberally?

    - by panamack
I'm building a WPF application and working with the MVVM pattern. I have 4 projects in my solution, 3 class libraries, Data, Model and ViewModel and the WPF executable View. Is there anything wrong with the Model referencing WindowsBase so that I can use ObservableCollection<T> for example or can I just make use of what I intuitively feel I need without worrying about the original purposes of the class in the framework e.g. collection databinding.

  • Creating Modules for VB Program (Similar to firefox add on)

    - by Assimilater
Hi all. I have a contact manager program that I'd like to design for multiple network marketing companies. My desired structure would include a core program which covers basic contact management functions. After that one could purchase a module for their specific network marketing company. This module would contain a variety of controls that the original program would need to be able to manipulate. Here is an example of what it would have to have: A group box containing buttons that link to a genealogy view, and the option to import one's donwnline from the back office provided by a company. A panel which is displayed on the contact page allowing the user to input business information or which will be filled by importing a downline from the back office: ie business ID, qualification level, sponsor information etc. a panel displayed when one searches for contacts on the contact list page which allows the user to sort based on information such as when they joined, what their business id is and so forth. a panel which is displayed in a personal business overview page which presents to an individual how many people in their downline are at each qualification level and develop a mailing list for individuals of a certain qualification level. I have the code developed to perform all these functions, I just wanted to give you an example of what needed to be done. I'm thinking that what I'm trying to create is a library that one can download and the program will recognize, but I'm not really sure where to go. What I'm really trying to do is figure out what kind of file I can make that will contain all this code and the GUI information that the program will recognize. Any ideas? With thanks, John

  • What are the general strategies for the server of an FPS multiplayer game to update its clients?

    - by Hooray Im Helping
A friend and I were having a discussion about how a FPS server updates the clients connected to it. We watched a video of a guy cheating in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and saw how it highlighted the position of enemies on the screen and it got us thinking. His contention was that the server only updates the client with information that is immediately relevant to the client. I.e. the server won't send information about enemy players if they are too far away from the client or out of the client's line of sight for reasons of efficiency. He was unsure though - he brought up the example of someone hiding behind a rock, not able to see anyone. If the player were suddenly to pop up where he had three players in his line of sight, there would be a 50ms delay before they were rendered on his screen while the server transmitted the necessary information. My contention was the opposite: that the server sends the client all the information about every player and lets the client sort out what is allowed and what isn't. I figured it would actually be less expensive computationally for the server to just send everything to the client and let the client do the heavy lifting, so to speak. I also figured this is how cheat programs work - they intercept the server packets, get the location of enemies, then show them on the client's view. So the question: What are some general policies or strategies a modern first person shooter server employs to keep its clients updated?

  • WMI Notfication and database mirroring

    - by user22215
Hi all I'm having a problem configuring a WMI alert that I would like to use with database mirroring. I'm running on Windows 2008 Enterprise X64 with Server 2008 Enterprise X64 also SQL Server has SP1 installed. Basically I click on alert select WMI after that I typed the below SQL statement SELECT * FROM DATABASE_MIRRORING_STATE_CHANGE WHERE DatabaseName = 'testmove' AND State = 8 I have also made sure the service broker is enabled for the msdb and all mirrored databases however I still can't get this to work basically the alert never fires. I'm testing with just the alert functionality I have not even added in the agent job yet. I tested this by right clicking on my mirrored database and forcing it to fail over. Any help with this problem would be much appreciated

  • HMAC URLs instead of login?

    - by Tres
In implementing my site (a Rails site if it makes any difference), one of my design priorities is to relieve the user of the need to create yet another username and password while still providing useful per-user functionality. The way I am planning to do this is: User enters information on the site. Information is associated with the user via server-side session. User completes entering information, server sends an access URL via e-mail to the user roughly in the form of: http://siteurl/<user identifier>/<signature: HMAC(secret + salt + user identifier)> User clicks URL, site looks up user ID and salt and computes the HMAC with the server-stored secret and authenticates if the computed HMAC and signature match. My question is: is this a reasonably secure way to accomplish what I'm looking to do? Are there common attacks that would render it useless? Is there a compelling reason to abandon my desire to avoid a username/password? Is there a must-read book or article on the subject? Note that I'm not dealing with credit card numbers or anything exceedingly private, but I would still like to keep the information reasonably secure.

  • Cannot extend a class located in another file, PHP

    - by NightMICU
I am trying to set up a class with commonly used tasks, such as preparing strings for input into a database and creating a PDO object. I would like to include this file in other class files and extend those classes to use the common class' code. However, when I place the common class in its own file and include it in the class it will be used in, I receive an error that states the second class cannot be found. For example, if the class name is foo and it is extending bar (the common class, located elsewhere), the error says that foo cannot be found. But if I place the code for class bar in the same file as foo, it works. Here are the classes in question - Common Class abstract class coreFunctions { protected $contentDB; public function __construct() { $this->contentDB = new PDO('mysql:host=localhost;dbname=db', 'username', 'password'); } public function cleanStr($string) { $cleansed = trim($string); $cleansed = stripslashes($cleansed); $cleansed = strip_tags($cleansed); return $cleansed; } } Code from individual class include $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . '/includes/class.core-functions.php'; $mode = $_POST['mode']; if (isset($mode)) { $gallery = new gallery; switch ($mode) { case 'addAlbum': $gallery->addAlbum($_POST['hash'], $_POST['title'], $_POST['description']); } } class gallery extends coreFunctions { private function directoryPath($string) { $path = trim($string); $path = strtolower($path); $path = preg_replace('/[^ \pL \pN]/', '', $path); $path = preg_replace('[\s+]', '', $path); $path = substr($path, 0, 18); return $path; } public function addAlbum($hash, $title, $description) { $title = $this->cleanStr($title); $description = $this->cleanStr($description); $path = $this->directoryPath($title); if ($title && $description && $hash) { $addAlbum = $this->contentDB->prepare("INSERT INTO gallery_albums (albumHash, albumTitle, albumDescription, albumPath) VALUES (:hash, :title, :description, :path)"); $addAlbum->execute(array('hash' => $hash, 'title' => $title, 'description' => $description, 'path' => $path)); } } } The error when I try it this way is Fatal error: Class 'gallery' not found in /home/opheliad/public_html/admin/photo-gallery/includes/class.admin_photo-gallery.php on line 10

  • Is is possible to create a factory class in PHP?

    - by user198729
Like the BeanFactory in java: In the much more common case where the BeanFactory itself directly creates the bean by calling its constructor (equivalent to Java code calling new), the class attribute specifies the class of the bean to be constructed. In the less common case where the BeanFactory calls a static, so-called factory method on a class to create the bean, the class attribute specifies the actual class containing the static factory method. Note:it's not the factory method

  • backbone.js - Having multiple instances of the same view

    - by TrueWheel
    I am having problems having multiple instances in of the same view in different div elements. When I try to initialize them only the second of the two elements appear no matter what order I put them in. Here is the code for my view. var BodyShapeView = Backbone.View.extend({ thingiview: null, scene: null, renderer: null, model: null, mouseX: 0, mouseY: 0, events:{ 'click button#front' : 'front', 'click button#diag' : 'diag', 'click button#in' : 'zoomIn', 'click button#out' : 'zoomOut', 'click button#on' : 'rotateOn', 'click button#off' : 'rotateOff', 'click button#wireframeOn' : 'wireOn', 'click button#wireframeOff' : 'wireOff', 'click button#distance' : 'dijkstra' }, initialize: function(name){ _.bindAll(this, 'render', 'animate'); scene = new THREE.Scene(); camera = new THREE.PerspectiveCamera( 15, 400 / 700, 1, 4000 ); camera.position.z = 3; scene.add( camera ); camera.position.y = -5; var ambient = new THREE.AmbientLight( 0x202020 ); scene.add( ambient ); var directionalLight = new THREE.DirectionalLight( 0xffffff, 0.75 ); directionalLight.position.set( 0, 0, 1 ); scene.add( directionalLight ); var pointLight = new THREE.PointLight( 0xffffff, 5, 29 ); pointLight.position.set( 0, -25, 10 ); scene.add( pointLight ); var loader = new THREE.OBJLoader(); loader.load( "img/originalMeanModel.obj", function ( object ) { object.children[0].geometry.computeFaceNormals(); var geometry = object.children[0].geometry; console.log(geometry); THREE.GeometryUtils.center(geometry); geometry.dynamic = true; var material = new THREE.MeshLambertMaterial({color: 0xffffff, shading: THREE.FlatShading, vertexColors: THREE.VertexColors }); mesh = new THREE.Mesh(geometry, material); model = mesh; // model = object; scene.add( model ); } ); // RENDERER renderer = new THREE.WebGLRenderer(); renderer.setSize( 400, 700 ); $(this.el).find('.obj').append( renderer.domElement ); this.animate(); }, Here is how I create the instances var morphableBody = new BodyShapeView({ el: $("#morphable-body") }); var bodyShapeView = new BodyShapeView({ el: $("#mean-body") }); Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Microsoft Small Business Licensing Kick Start

    - by regex
I seem to recall hearing at some point (I believe it was MIX09) that Microsoft has a licensing model of some sort where a business can consume licenses for up to two years, free of charge, until they reach a point where they are stable position and can pay their licensing at the end of two years. However, I can't find information regarding it online. I want to say that possibly stackoverflow used this licensing model to kick start their site. Is anyone familiar with this?

  • Multiple SQL Standard Instances on 4 Processor/32-core Server

    - by Theowood
We have a large 4 processor/32-core server with 192GB of memory available in the data center and over twenty small SQL Standard databases to consolidate. They are a mix of SQL 2012 and 2008 R2 for 3rd-party apps. Is there any issue with simply installing two instances of SQL Standard on the server - one for 2012 and one for 2008 R2 ? Each instance will use up to 64GB out of the 192GB and 16 cores. If we did this with Enterprise, the licensing would be a fortune and the Enterprise features are not needed.

  • Stored Queries?

    - by phpeffedup
Is it considered crazy to store common SQL queries for my web app in a database for use in execution? Or is that common practice? Or is it impossible? My thinking is, this way, I avoid hard-coding SQL into my application files, and add another level of abstraction. Is this crazy? Is this what a stored procedure is? Or is that something else?
