• Something like jQuery's .resizable but without the div's inside

  Hi everyone, this is just a quick probe to see if this is technically possible. I'm wanting to enable the resizing of an image in the browser (also within a contentEditable area). Firefox and IE already allow this to be done with their inbuilt handles and it works fine. I'm wanting to implement something for Safari however because it doesn't support this natively. I've had a go with jQuery's resizable method and it does a very good job, however it relies on inserting a bunch of div's along with the image and wrapping that in a big div. This would normally be fine if we weren't concerned with the code generated in the contentEditable area, but we are because it's going to be saved back to the server. I could strip this extra stuff out on save, but I was thinking, is it technically possible to create a resizing script for images that doesn't rely on adding extra div's? Even if we decide to go without handles for now, and just concentrate on detecting when a user is close to the edge of the image, change the mouse cursor to a resizing one, and detect clicks and drags in the 5px's around the edge of the image, is this possible? If it's possible, I'm assuming (hoping) that perhaps it's already been done, but my searching hasn't turned up anything so far. Keen to hear any ideas :)

• HTML to 'pretty' text conversion for printing on text only printer (dot matrix)

  Hi, I have a web-site that generates some simple tabular data as html tables, many of my users print the web-page on a laser/inkjet printer; however some like to print on legacy Dot Matrix printers (text only) and there-in lies the problem. When giving Print from web-browser onto dot-matrix printer, the printer actually perceives data as 'graphic'/image and proceeds to print it dot-by-dot. i.e If printing a character 'C', printer slices it horizontally and prints in 3-4 passes. Same printer prints a text from an ASCII file (say from notepad) as complete characters in single pass, thereby being 5 times faster and much quieter than when printing a web-page. (Even tried 'generic text-only driver' but Mozilla Firefox has a know bug that it does not print anything over this particular driver since 2.0+) So is there some clean way of formatting an already generated HTML (say method takes the entire html table as string) and generates a corresponding text file with properly aligned columns? I have tried stripping the html tags, but the major issue there is performing good 'wrapping' of a cell's data and maintaining integrity of other cells' data (from same row). eg: ( '|' and '_' not really required) Col1 | Col2 | Colum_Name3 | Col4 | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 1 | this cell | this column | smaller | | is in three| spans 2 rows | | | rows | | | - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2 | smaller now| this also | but this| | | | cell's | | | | data is | | | | now | | | | bigger | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Could you please suggest preferred approach? • stopping backspace on multiple browsers using jQuery

  I am attempting to stop a backspace keydown event from being handled by browsers, I'm using the jquery library, so I need to get the original event, but on some browsers (firefox at least) I get an error when trying to set the original events keyCode = 0, it gives and error saying that only a getter exists for that property. function blockBackspace(event) { var altKey = event.originalEvent.altKey; var srcElementType = event.originalEvent.srcElement; if( (altKey) || ((event.keyCode == 8) && (srcElementType != "text" && srcElementType != "textarea" && srcElementType != "password")) || ((event.ctrlKey) && ((event.keyCode == 78) || (event.keyCode == 82)) ) || (event.keyCode == 116) ) { event.keyCode = 0; event.returnValue = false; event.originalEvent.keyCode = 0; event.originalEvent.returnValue = false; //sets process backspaceFlag to keep multiple handlers from removing text processBackspace = true; } } so I'm not exactly sure what to do next, every solution I find yields more problems. • ColdFusion blank page in IE7 on refresh?

  I'm new to ColdFusion, have a very basic problem that's really slowing me down. I'm making edits in a text editor and refreshing the page in web browsers for testing. Standard web dev stuff, no browser-sniffing, redirection, or other weirdness, and no proxies involved. When I refresh the page in Chrome or Firefox, everything works fine, but when I refresh in IE7, I get a blank page. View Source shows me: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=utf-8"></HEAD> <BODY></BODY></HTML> That's it. While I am rendering to the transitional DTD, the real head contains a title, etc. My development server is CF 9, production is 8. This problem has been happening in both. Seems it may only be happening on pages that are the the result of a POST action. I've never experienced this in ASP.NET (my usual development environment) using the same browsers.

• How to do a javascript redirection to a ClickOnce deployment URL?

  I have a ClickOnce application used to view some documents on a website. When connected, the user sees a list of documents as links to http://server/myapp.application?document=docname. It worked fine until I had to integrate the website authentication/security system into my application. The website uses a ticketing system to grant access to its users. A ticket is generated by a web application and needs to be added to the deployment URL querystring, then I have to check at application startup that the ticket given in querystring was right by making another request to the web application. So the deployment URL becomes something like: h ttp://server/myapp.application?document=docname&ticket=ticketnumber. The problem is the ticket is valid only 10 seconds, so I have to get it only after the user has clicked a link. My first try was to have some javascript do the request to get the ticket, generate the proper deployment URL and then redirect the user to this URL with "window.location = deploymentUrl;". It works fine in Firefox, but IE does not prompt the user for installation. I guess it is a ClickOnce security constraints, but I am able to do the redirection when doing it on localhost, so I hope there is a workaround. I have also added the server on the "trusted sites" list in IE options. Is it possible to have that working in IE? What are my other options to do that?

• Ajax UpdatePanels scroll on partial page update.

  I set the AutoPostback property of a textbox to True so I can process the TextChanged event on the server and, based on what they typed in the textbox, appropriately display a message in an update panel. The problem is, when the partial screen refresh is performed, no control on the screen has focus. 99% of the time, when the text in the textbox is changed, it is because the user has tabbed forward, and so, to limit the disruption in the lost of focus, I perform a "Focus" call on teh next control in the tab sequence. For the most part, this works OK, but of course, is disputive if the user is tabbing in the reverse order or has used the mouse to set the focus to another control. In these situations, the focus would be set to the next control even though the user was trying to set focus elsewhere. OK, that sucks. Now what I consider the bigger problem with calling the focus method on the server: In IE, it works OK, but in Mozilla Firefox and Chrome, setting the focus causes a repositioning of the scroll bar, even though none is necessary because the control is already in view. I realize that I could switch to doing AJAX web service calls, but these darn Updae Panels are so convenient if used in moderation. is there anyway to use updatepanels and not have these focus/scroll issues?

  Hello all, I am trying a simple test with the html 5 cache. Here is a simple web page : <!DOCTYPE html> <html manifest="test.manifest"> <head> </head> <body> <img src="http://www.somewebsite.com/picture.jpg"/> </body> </html> With the following manifest : CACHE MANIFEST #v0.1 NETWORK: http://www.somewebsite.com/ This work fine, the picture is displayed. My problem is that I won't be able to know from where the picture will come. Here comes the online whitelist wildcard flag, that is supposed to solve my problem. But with the manifest : CACHE MANIFEST #v0.1 NETWORK: * The image is not displayed (tested on safari / safari mobile / firefox). What is not working ? Is there another way to turn the online whitelist wildcard flag on ?

• URL "fragment identifier" semantics for HTML documents

  I've been working with a new installation of the "MoinMoin" wiki software. As I was playing with it, typing in mostly random test pages, I created a link with a fragment blah blah see also [[SomeStuff#whatever|some other stuff about whatever]] Then I needed to figure out how to create the anchor for that "whatever" fragment identifier. I don't recall having to do that with MediaWiki, so I had to dig around, but finally I found that MoinMoin has an "Anchor" macro: == Whatever == <<Anchor(whatever)>> Looking at the generated HTML, I was surprised to see an empty <span> tag with an "id" value of "whatever". I expected that it'd be an <a> tag with a "name" attribute of "whatever". I dug around and found the source, and there's a comment that says they changed it from an <a> tag in order to avoid some IE problem with <pre> sections. This confused me — not because of the IE thing, but because it looked to me as if their "fix" had left the whole anchor mechanism completely broken. Much to my surprise, however, further testing indicated that it worked fine. I wrote a test page with 300 <span> tags all with "id" values, and I further shocked myself when Firefox behaved exactly as I would have expected it to had I used <a> tags. It also worked when I changed all the <span> tags to <em>. So by this time, you're either as surprised as I was, or else you're thinking "how can somebody that dumb have so many reputation points?" If you're in the second category, is it really the case that I've been typing in HTML for about 15 years now — a lot of HTML — and it's somehow escaped my notice that browsers use the HTML fragment to find any sort of element with a matching "id"? mind status: blown

• Javascript keyup doesn't work as expected, it executes in instances where I have not removed my fing

  I'm trying to create a simple game in javascript and I'm stuck on how to deal with keys. Small example: function keyUpEvent(event) { alert(event.keyCode); } window.addEventListener("keyup", keyUpEvent, false); I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and testing it in Firefox 3.5 and Chromium. If I press and release a button instantly I get an alert, which is to be expected, but when I press and hold a button I get a small pause and then a series of alert windows, the expected result is that I only get an alert window when I remove my finger from a button. I reason it has something to do with the fact that when I press and hold a button in a text area for example I get one character, small pause, and then a series of characters: dddddddddddddddd. I believe it's possible to get around this or do it more right or whatever since this game for example: http://bohuco.net/testing/gamequery/pong.html seams not to be affected by this. But I notice if I try out the jquery keyup demo ( api.jquery.com/keyup/ ) I get the same problem. How can I implement basic game key event handling?

• How to resize table via javascript in IE?

  I've got this table: <table id="correctness" style="overflow: hidden;"> <tr><td style="overflow: hidden;"> <div id="correctness-message"></div> <span class="hide"> <button type="button" class="hide" onclick="new DisplayEffect('correctness').Hide(500);">Hide</button> </span> </td> </tr> </table> and a function for resizing the table: function resize(element, size) { element.style.height = size + "px";}; which is called for a certain amount of time (e.g. 1 second) with the ID of table (i.e. "correctness") in order to resize the table from zero height to its full height. This code works in Firefox and Chrome but it doesn't work in IE8. What it does is that it displays right away whole table even thought the height set in "resize" method is much lower. It seems that the cell sets the height of parent table and not the other way around. Is it possible to change the behaviour? I like changing the height of the table better because I can set visibility of the table easily. Thanks for any help!

• jquery validator message styling error in IE08 only when customised using errorPlacement function

  Going back to the errorplacement solution by Nadia (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/860055/jquery-override-default-validation-error-message-display-css-popup-tooltip-like) I have tried it and it works like a charm in Safari and Firefox but causes IE08 to bypass the jqueryvalidator and go straight to the server side validator. My code is this - as soon as I insert 'error element.... it is unstable in IE08. • Is there a way to disable a label?

  I am using an asp radio button group to list out answers in a form. Here is an example of the structure (I know the text doesn't make sense, bare with me). <asp:RadioButtonList id="Q2" runat="server"> <asp:ListItem Text="Go to <a target='_blank' href='http:www.google.com'>Google</a>" Value="a"></asp:ListItem> <asp:ListItem Text="Go to <a target='_blank' href='http:www.yahoo.com'>Yahoo</a>" Value="a"></asp:ListItem> </asp:RadioButtonList> So I want to be able to click on the links and not have the radiobutton associated with it become selected. In IE it works fine but in Firefox the radio button will be selected when i click on the link. I don't really need the label to actually select the proper radio button so is there a way to just disable them either in javascript or somewhere in the asp or C# code?

• jQuery error when aborting an ajax call only in Internet Explorer

  When mousing over an image in a jcarousel, my site displays a popup whose contents are loaded via ajax. I'm doing what I thought was fairly straightforward; keeping a handle to the xhrRequest object, and aborting the existing one before making a new request. It works great in all browsers except IE, where I receive an error "Object doesn't support this property or method" Here's the code that is triggering it: function showPopup { // ... code snipped ... // cancel the existing xhr request if (showPopup.xhrRequest != null) { showPopup.xhrRequest.abort(); showPopup.xhrRequest = null; } showPopup.xhrRequest = $.ajax({url: url, type: "GET", success:function(data) { $("#popup-content").html(data); } }); // ... code snipped ... } showPopup.xhrRequest = null; Works great in Firefox and Chrome. • Simple way to embed an MP3 audio file in a (static) HTML file, starting to play at a specifc time?

  Hi all, I want to produce a simple, static HTML file, that has one or more embedded MP3 files in it. The idea is to have a simple mean of listening to specific parts of an mp3 file. On a single click on a visual element, the sound should start to play; However, not from the beginning of the file, but from a specified starting point in that file (and play to the end of the file). This should work all locally from the client's local filesystem, the HTML file and the MP3 files do not reside on a webserver. So, how to play the MP3 audio from a specific starting point? The solution I am looking for should be as simple as possible, while working on most browsers, including IE, Firefox and Safari. Note: I know the <embed> tag as described here, but this seems not to work with my target browsers. Also I have read about jPlayer and other Java-Script-based players, but since I have never coded some JavaScript, I would prefer a HTML-only solution, if possible.

• CSS doesn't apply to dynamically created elements in IE 7?

  In the project I am working on, I dynamically generate (with javascript) filters that look like this: <div class="filter"> <a ... class="filter_delete_link">Delete</a> <div class="filter_field"> ... </div> <div class="filter_compare"> ... </div> <div class="filter_constraint"> ... </div> <div class="filter_logic"> ... </div> </div> And I have CSS that applies to each filter (for example): .filter a.filter_delete_link{ display:block; height:16px; background: url('../images/remove_16.gif') no-repeat; padding-left:20px; } However, it seems in IE 7 (and probably 6 for that matter), these styles don't get applied to the new filters. Everything works perfectly in Firefox/Chrome/IE8. Using the IE8 developer tools, set to IE7 mode, the browser can see the new elements, and can see the CSS, but just isn't applying the CSS. Is there a way to force IE to reload styles, or perhaps is there a better way to fix this?

• jQuery Validation plugin results in empty AJAX POST

  Hi, I have tried to solve this issue for at couple of days with no luck. I have a form, where I use the validation plugin, and when I try to submit it, it submits empty vars. Now, if I remove the validation, everything works fine. Now here is the funny thing, everything works as it should in Safari, but not in firefox 3.6.2 (Mac OS X)!

• Trying to modify the text of a document onkeydown is inserting text incorrectly.

If I type here things go wrong... </div> </body> </html> My goal is to do a kind of syntax highlighting on edit, to highlight variable names that begin with an @ symbol. However, when I edit the document's body, the function runs but the cursor is automatically shifted to the beginning of the body before the keystroke is performed. My hypothesis is that the keypress event is trying to insert the new character at a specified index, but when I run the replace function the indices get messed up so it defaults the character insertion point to the beginning. I'm using Firefox to test by the way. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, B.J.

• Absolutely positioned div on right causing scrollbar when the left doesn't

  I'm trying to "flank" a centered div with some design elements that are absolutely positioned outside the main div's width. I'm getting a scroll bar due to the element on the right, but not the element on the left (IE6/7/8, Chrome, Firefox). • User authentication using CodeIgniter

  I have a problem creating authentication part for my application. Below is the simplified version of my controllers. The idea is that the MY_controller checks if session with user data exists. If it doesn’t, then redirects to the index page where you have to log in. MY_controller.php class MY_Controller extends Controller { function __construct() { parent::__construct(); $this->load->helper('url'); $this->load->library('session'); if($this->session->userdata('user') == FALSE) { redirect('index'); } else { redirect('search'); } } } order.php - main controller class Orders extends MY_Controller { function __construct() { parent::__construct(); $this->load->helper('url'); $this->load->library('session'); } function index() { // Here would be the code that validates information input by user. // If validation is successful, it creates user session. $this->load->view('header.html', $data); // load header $this->load->view('index_view', $data); // load body $this->load->view('footer.html', $data); // load footer } function search() { //different page } what is happening is that the browser is telling me that “The page isn’t redirecting properly. Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.” It seems like the redirect() is being looped. I looked at a few other examples of user auth and they were build using similar technique.

• How do I simulate the usage of a sequence of web pages?

  I have a simple sequence of web pages written in ASP.Net 3.5 SP1. Page1 - A Logon Form.... txtUsername, txtPassword and cmdLogon Page2 - A Menu (created using DevExpress ASP.Net controls) Page3 - The page redirected to by the server in the event that the user picks the right menu option in Page2 I would like to create a threaded program to simulate many users trying to use this sequence of pages. I have managed to create a host Winforms app which Launches a new thread for each "User" I have further managed to work out the basics of WebRequest enough to perform a request which retrieves the Logon page itself. Dim Request As HttpWebRequest = TryCast(WebRequest.Create("http://MyURL/Logon.aspx"), HttpWebRequest) Dim Response As HttpWebResponse = TryCast(Request.GetResponse(), HttpWebResponse) Dim ResponseStream As StreamReader = New StreamReader(Response.GetResponseStream(), Encoding.GetEncoding(1252)) Dim HTMLResponse As String = ResponseStream.ReadToEnd() Response.Close() ResponseStream.Close() Next I need to simulate the user having entered information into the 2 TextBoxes and pressing logon.... I have a hunch this requires me to add the right sort of "PostData" to the request. before submitting. However I'm also concerned that "ViewState" may be an issue. Am I correct regarding the PostData? How do I add the postData to the request? Do I need to be concerned about Viewstate? Update: While I appreciate that Selenium or similar products are useful for acceptance testing , I find that they are rather clumsy for what amounts to load testing. I would prefer not to load 100 instances of Firefox or IE in order to simulate 100 users hitting my site. This was the reason I was hoping to take the ASPNet HttpWebRequest route.
