• Installing Debian 7.1 on FakeRAID/Intel Z77 results in boot with no grub menu

  I'm trying to install Debian 7.1 from DVD onto 2x500GB drives which are set up in a FakeRAID mirror using the on-board FakeRAID provided by the Z77 chipset. I have followed the guide here https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid. Namely, I booted into the expert install with the 'dmraid=true' option added, installed onto the RAID mirror which the installer correctly detected, then installed grub2 onto /dev/mapper/.. raid volume. I chose to use LVM (so a boot partition + LVM volume). As per the guide, I have uncommented the "GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true" line in "/etc/default/grub" and ran "update-grub" then "grub-install /dev/mapper/.." (with the right RAID device in the command). However, after I rebooted the system, all I got was a grub console. It did not load the menu. I checked and it seems that it never even generated a menu file. I re-installed Debian a few times since, trying out different options and also a few workarounds people posted online, but to no avail. The best I am getting is a grub console. No menu. Some times it will generate the grub.cfg, some times it won't, depending on the workaround I try. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. There is no need to preach how I should not use FakeRAID. I have seen others trying to figure this out so I think a resolution to this issue would be of interest to more than just me. Also, I first installed the system onto a small drive for testing something else. I made a backup with Acronis and was able to restore that onto the RAID mirror by using Universal Restore. When I installed it onto a 500GB without RAID, backed up using the same method, then restored onto a RAID volume of the same size, it would not boot and I got grub errors. Weird. I can post more details, just let me know what you want to see.

• Computer does not boot, often

  I've ran into a issue with my computer that it does no longer reach POST, but simply powers on for a fraction of a second and powers off. But this is not always, some times it boots just normally and it works as it should, no issues with not enough power or anything. But as soon as I turn it of, I can not turn it back on, but then again at some random point it just powers up again, and resumes normal operation. If I disconnect the 8pin ATX connector from the motherboard, it powers up, fans and disks spinning normally until I power it off again. So this problem only happens when ATX is connected, which seems odd, I normally always saw this kind of an error if ATX was not connected, but here it's the exact opposite. It also does not emit any sound on the buzzer, except the normal beep, when it powers up normally. I have already tried: Remove graphics card Remove one and/or all RAM sticks Disconnect everything non-essential, even hard drives Clear CMOS I have not yet tried to remove all components and tried to boot everything outside of the case, because I did not have the time to disassemble and bleed the water loop. However, I can confirm that nothing is stuck underneath the motherboard, not is any of those brass raisers touching the board where it should not. Specs: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3 AMD FX6300 ATI HD7850 I think this should be enough for this issue.

• External HDD incorrectly detected as internal - how change to enable hot swap/eject?

  I have win 7 x64 Home Prem. The HDD is a seagate barracuda, 7200.7 ST3120827AS. 3.5", Serial: 3ms006n6, Firmware: 3.42 (no further updates) NexStar CX External case (drivers installed). I have three drives: WD320 with OS installed WD750 data storage (internal) seagate 120 (external) - connected via esata board connected to sata on motherboard (MSI p43 neo) Tried uninstalling HDD in device manager to no effect. Also the internal WD750 is detected as an external drive and win taskbar icon allows for it to be ejected (unlike the seagate). All drives are configured - Online, Simple, Basic, NTFS, Active, Primary Partition (except c drive). The seagate was previously used as a primary disk with XP operating system so I deleted the volume and created/reformatted (not quick). HDD is no longer "Active". But did not fix problem. Background Originally, I installed win 7 with the bios set to IDE and forgot to install the chipset drivers. Then I changed win 7 to install the AHCI drivers, changed the bios to AHCI and rebooted. Win 7 loaded drivers but WD HDD gave problems/crashed. I installed chipset drivers and latest intell storage matrix software thingie (in safe mode). Everything worked fine after that except for the problem of not corrrectly detecting the external drive] I have noticed that under the driver properties (and similarly in the registry) the two drives are configured differently (e.g. in driver details property capabilities for the WD the value is set to 0000006, CM_DEVCAP_REMOVABLE & EJECTSUPPORTED - whereas the seagate shows 0000080 & CM_DEVCAP_SURPRISEREMOVALOK). Any easy way to configure things? I tried physically swapping the sata connections on the mainboard without success So far I have found that a solution to my problem might be to perform some reg changes: How do I remove the option to eject SATA drives from the Windows 7 tray icon?

• K8NDRE motherboard in server fails to complete BIOS load with error 0078

  K8NDRE motherboard with 4 sata drives, was running fine. Drives had raid-0 and raid-1 partitions, using mdadm. The onboard raid is disabled. Upon reformatting the drives, setting a new partition structure and new raid partitions, the bios fails to finish loading, with 0078 in the bottom right corner. Tried using completely new set of drives, and bios worked fine. Able to boot from a usb, format the drives, partition them, start raid, and then installed os. Reboot and received the same error from the bios, 0078. Works fine if I unplug the sata drives. Any thoughts? Physical inspection reveals no damage cables, connectors, or capacitors. Server was running happily for over a year, and this is the first problem it has had. Per Michael Hampton's answer: The drives, unjumpered and supporting sata III worked fine originally, and worked fine for formatting and having new partitions and raid installed on them. I did try jumpering one, with no change. If I put a brand new unformatted drive in, the motherboard recognizes it and I can proceed with formatting and installing. When I reboot, I get the 0078. I have 4 sata cables-the board supports 4 drives, so I tried each and no change. I am close to calling the motherboard done.

• Many different BSOD

  I'm experiencing multiple bluescreens for a couple of months now. Their error code is as diverse as their time of occurence... Sometimes it happens during gaming, sometimes when watching videos, sometimes when the computer is idle. These are the bluescreens I see most often: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER Responsible drivers (according to the memory dumps): hal.dll tcpip.sys dxgmms1.sys ndis.sys mouhid.sys atikmdag.sys dump_atapi.sys and of course: ntoskrnl.exe My first thought was a driver incompatibility because I am using Windows 8 and some of the bluescreens seem to come from driver issues. All drivers are up to date. I'm afraid that my memory is broken or the mainboard or both. I used the windows integrated memtest which didn't find any errors. Memtest86 found some errors. Does it make sense to buy new memory? Couldn't it be a problem of the board as well? I also read that my memory could run at a too low voltage. But it's set to 1.5V as recommended. Another guess would be to set the memory's latencies manually, but how do I know which ones to try? Here is a screenshot of bluescreenview showing the latest bluescreens. Maybe someone has faced the same behavior before and found a solution. Any ideas or suggestions? Current setup on which the bluescreens occur. • Why is my new PC so slow at startup?

  Bought a new PC this weekend, and it works really good. Only I have one big problem: startup time. Its BIOS needs 62 sec to load, then from Grub start to pw entering screen it's another 26 sec. I think this is a lot, because my old PC needs 34 sec for BIOS and another 8 sec to pw screen. After I enter the pw, the desktop is usable with practically no delay on both. The new PC is a core i7-930, running a Lucid Lynx 64 bit from a Intel Postville SSD (no internal HDs). The old PC is a Pentium 4 celeron (forgot the clock speed) running a Lucid Lynx 32 bit from an ATA 100 hard drive. Neither PC is overclocked. The new one has boot sequence 1.DVD ROM, 2.SSD (connected over SATA in AHCI mode), 3. removable drive. The old one boots from 1. DVD ROM, 2. HDD, 3. Floppy. Neither has a second OS installed. The new one has less software installed than the old one (I think), but the boot time difference was noticeable even before I made any installs. As far as I know, just the SSD should be enough to make a noticeable difference in boot time. I thought that having a good mainboard on the new PC as opposed to the basic office model on the old one would also mean a faster loading BIOS. If these assumptions are right, I guess I must have misconfigured something in the BIOS of the new PC. How should I configure it for a fast boot? It has an ASUS P6X58D board with an AMI BIOS, if you need the BIOS revision number I could post that too.

• Does anyone know where I could find a 2 input USB voltage meter?

  What we really need is a tiny UPS, of sorts. We'll be hooking up a solar cell and a battery to a single board computer. Currently, that SBC is a custom Pic32 device, and it does it's own UPS and voltage monitoring duties. I've been tasked with trying to replicate all of its features with off the shelf products... and for the most part I've succeeded. But I don't currently have any way to switch between two sources of juice, or monitor when they're getting low. These guys have something: http://www.mini-box.com/picoUPS-100-12V-DC-micro-UPS-system-battery-backup-system I really like it, the price is well within the budget. We might even work it in though it does 12V and I'll probably be using 5V... there are enough engineers on hand to figure out something. But I'd still have no idea what the voltage was for the PV or battery. I was hoping that there was some simple little USB multimeter thing that I could use to monitor this with, but I can't seem to come up with anything. I've found all sorts of cool hardware, but nothing that will help us. Does anyone know of anything?

• Computer wont start, just blinks on and off

  This is really strange. I had a comp that was working fine for over a year, then suddenly it started to shut off, it got so bad that I press the power button and in around 30 secs while booting windows it would shut off, then 20 secs... then 10 secs, then it refused to start all together. So I bought a new PSU (850w Thermaltake, the old one was 550w corsair) thinking that was the problem, I fitted the new PSU now and its the same thing, I press the power button and my fans start for a split second (they have led lights on them, so the lights come on) and then everything goes off again. I thought maybe it was my power button that was loose on my comp, luckily I had another chassis near by so I disconnected the powerSW from the old one and put ran the powerSW from the new chassis, press the power on the new chassis and same thing, it blinks for a split second and off again. Double checked connections from the PSU to the cpu power as well as board mobo power, its tight. It's pretty unlikely both the PSUs have the same exact problem so am lost... Suggestions?

• USB 3.0 ports backwards compatibility problems with 2.0 devices?

  I see some info on the net that suggest that I should be able to get my USB 2.0 devices to work in 3.0 ports. I only have two 2.0 ports on my new computer, and six 3.0 ports. I have installed drives. There's two different drivers, I guess some of the ports are supported by the intel board and some supported by some other chipset on the motherboard. I however have yet to get any of the 3.0 ports to work, and my brother had had the same issue with his devices not working in 3.0 ports on his computer. So I am beginning to wonder if the backwards compatibility isn't reliable for some reason. Maybe manufacturers opting not to implement 2.0 support on the 3.0 ports. I understand that physically the wiring is there, but that is only half the story. Beyond my brother's and my own computers (different motherboards/everything), I have yet to see a 2.0 device work in a 3.0 port. Is there any reason for this apparent device incompatibility? I.e. looking for responses that would indicate what areas to explore for issues or if there is any known cases of manufacturers deviating from spec in hardware or drivers. I am aware it's "supposed" to work :) Update: Does this have any relation to "USB Legacy Support" options in the BIOS? There several options combinations of options with "USB Legacy Support" and "USB 3.0 Legacy Support" and the description for these is a bit confusing, sounds like a bad translation.

• AMD processors witn graphics card bundled [closed]

  Sorry for posting this question here - just don't know to which StackExchange website i should be writing. I've heard AMD created processors with video card bundled. So now these processors should work as fast as just usual processors with discrete video card but AMD's ones should use less power and spread less warm. Some googling around gave me the result like "AMD processors of A-series". They were mentioned to be build using that technology i described above. But on the other hand, we have a small rate of publishing and not-very-good quality of AMD drivers. I am a game-developer and web-developer so i need a powerful processor and graphics card and a lot of RAM on board (to make it possible to create a sample Grails application, for example or to create some 3D models in Maya/Cinema4D, for instance). Still i want my battery to be a long-living one, so power usage is a bit critical for me. So, my questions are: are there any processor building technology like i've described and which series they are (if they exist)? which processor shall fit the laptop the best: AMD one or i5/i7 on with nVidia graphics card for the purposes mentioned above?

• Laptop does not charge old or new battery with Old and New AC adapters.

  My Sager computer has been having a strange issue with the charging. For a long time it would be working perfectly as long as I was active on it. After I'd leave idle for a while it would suddenly decide it didn't want to use AC power anymore and would just discharge the battery until it shutdown because of low battery levels. Was not a huge deal to me since I just sent it to standby when done with it and it worked fine. Recently, however, it would not detect AC power while the battery was in. It ran from the battery just fine but until you powered it down, unplugged the battery, then plugged in the AC adapter it would not be on AC. In addition if I plug the battery back in after it's on AC power, it will see it but the battery won't charge though it can still discharge it. This is OS independent. I tried both a replacement battery and a replacement AC adapter. Neither solved my issue. I'm fairly comfortable opening and servicing a laptop but I don't know where to start. I'd like to avoid replacing my system board if possible. Any Ideas?

  I have a typical semi advanced home network scenario: A cable modem - eth A wireless router (netgear n600) eth and wlan A home server (Running ubuntu 12.04 LTS, connected over wlan) A bunch of wireless clients (wlan) Lying around I have anoher cheaper wlan router, and two different USB wlan NIC's that are known to work with Linux. ACTA struck. I want to route ALL of my WAN traffic through a remote server through a VPN. For sake of completition, lets say there is a remote server running debian sqeeze where a VPN server is to be installed. The network is then to behave so that if the VPN is not operative, it is separated from the outside world. I am familiar with general system/network practices, but lack the specific detailed knowledge to accomplish this. Please suggest the right approach, packages and configurations you'd use to reach said solution. • CentOS: AJAX/jQuery not working

  In a nutshell, I have an unmanaged VPS. At one time, it had Ubuntu 10.10 server on it, then I reinstalled it with CentOS 6 and updated it to CentOS 6.2. Now, the problem is, the AJAX/jQuery shoutbox has ceased working (I assume it uses one of the two to inject itself into a div and then refresh when new messages are posted, I'm not sure, I didn't write these), and the plug-board script now shows me a lime green blank page. No changes to the source codes have been made, and they are in the location they expect themselves to be. I have Apache2, MySQL 5, PHP 5, and I did install the php-xml libraries. What am I missing? It's gotta be server side because the scripts themselves are fine, if I move them to a different server they work just fine. I'm not getting any errors related to this in the error_log file. Thanks in advance! • Help with Backup Scheme for B.E 12.5

  I'm in process of implementing a new backup scheme. I would say that I'm kind of new to it. So here my question. I'm currently using Backup Exec 12.5 on Windows Server 2008 w/Hyper-V, and IBM Adic Scalar 24. I currently backup our mail server, SQL DB, Board Server Linux Red Hat, Ftp, etc. To a Near-line which is local on our SAN I have the daily's go there as well as full. I would like to start weekly full to tape on a Saturday it takes about 2-3 days to complete the entire full to tape due to backing up from our Co-Lo as well. I have read up on the Father/son rotation but here's my issue with that I dont use tapes everyday only on the weekly full to tape will I be using them. So if there is 4 weeks in a month would I rotate in this order ( Month June WK1 =7tapes , June WK2=7 tapes, June WK3=7tapes June Wk4=7tapes with WK4 being the last tape for the month of June I would use that as a Month tape. For the month of July Wk1= June's WK1 tapes, July WK2= June's WK2 tapes July WK4 = Junes Wk4 tape for a month or would I use a set of new tapes for the last week in July. All tapes are being taking off site as well.

• Memory Usage by Mapped Files (Win7 64Bit)

  When copying files from/to my external USB3 HDD memory usage in Win7 goes up to 100% and remains there. I'm not sure whether this is a problem caused by faulty drivers or not, but I already have the current version of them (Etron USB3 controller on a Gigabyte 990fxa board).. Using RAMMap it becomes obvious that the files, that are to be copied, are mapped into memory. Clicking on Empty > Empty System Working Set seems to temporarily fix the problem (without causing any trouble with the file copy process), but it needs to be done every few seconds. Is there any way to schedule this operation to happen ever 10 or so seconds on its own? What underlying system command is RAMMap using? Or, alternatively, is there any way to limit how much RAM mapped files may use in Windows 7? I know mapped files would usually be removed from memory if other programs need the memmory, but while memmory usage is at 100% the system starts freezing up for half a second or so everytime I click anything .. thus the automatic removal of unused memory contents seems to be failing here.

The application: Sends a SOAP message to a British Government Server to get an authentication token based on the arugments passed Retrieves a response from that server in the form of a string which contains the authentication token. I have a template of the SOAP message from the British Government, and a WSDL file for the service. What I have tried Add a service reference using the WSDL file. I received the following error: URI formats are not supported. Add a Web Reference using the URL of the service. • wso2 products and alfresco integration

  I've found this tutorial about installing Alfresco on WSO2 Appserver. http://sanjeewamalalgoda.blogspot.com/2011/09/how-to-install-alfresco-on-wso2.html Does this mean I can delegate authentication to the wso2 security configuration also? I wouldn't want to have to manage security in both places separately. If I were to deploy Alfresco in wso2 I would want to use the wso2 Identity Server for authentication. I was thinking about Alfresco running in wso2 Appserver using identity server for authentication and ESB for the Alfresco services. Is this approach suitable for other apps as well? Is that possible?

I then redid what was suggested in the article, which is this: cat ~/.ssh/hostgator.pub | ssh -p 2222 -o PubkeyAuthentication=no [email protected] 'cat >> .ssh/authorized_keys' (note: my ssh key is called hostgator.pub. it's dsa I verified that the authorized_keys now has the content of this key. • spring web application context is not loaded from jar file in WEB-INF/lib when running tomcat in eclipse

  I am experimenting with spring, maven, and eclipse but stumbling on a weird issue. I am running Eclipse Helios SR1 with the STS (Spring tools suite) plugin which includes the Maven plugin also. What i want to achieve is a spring mvc webapp which uses an application context loaded from a local application context xml file, but also from other application contexts in jar files dependencies included in WEB-INF/lib. What i'd ultimately like to do is have my persistence layer separated in its own jar file but containing its own spring context files with persistence specific configuration (e.g a jpa entityManagerFactory for example). So to experiment with loading resources from jar dependencies, i created a simple maven project from eclipse, which defines an applicationContext.xml file in src/main/resources Inside, i define a bean <bean id="mybean" class="org.test.MyClass" /> and create the class in the org.test package I run mvn-install from eclipse, which generates me a jar file containing my class and the applicationContext.xml file: testproj.jar |_META-INF |_org |_test |_MyClass.class |_applicationContext.xml I then create a spring mvc project from the Spring template projects provided by STS. I have configured an instance of Tomcat 7.0.8 , and also an instance of springSource tc Server within eclipse. Deploying the newly created project on both servers works without problem. I then add my previous project as a maven dependency of the mvc project. the jar file is correctly added in the Maven Dependencies of the project. In the web.xml that is generated, i now want to load the applicationContext.xml from the jar file as well as the existing one generated for the project. nested exception is java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/test/MyClass If i build the war file (using maven "install" goal), and then deploy that war file in the webapps directory of a standalone tomcat server (7.0.8 as well) it WORKS :-( What am i missing ?
