• Reg Gets a Job at Red Gate (and what happens behind the scenes)

  Mr Reg Gater works at one of Cambridge’s many high-tech companies. He doesn’t love his job, but he puts up with it because... well, it could be worse. Every day he drives to work around the Red Gate roundabout, wondering what his boss is going to blame him for today, and wondering if there could be a better job out there for him. By late morning he already feels like handing his notice in. He got the hacky look from his boss for being 5 minutes late, and then they ran out of tea. Again. He goes to the local sandwich shop for lunch, and picks up a Red Gate job menu and a Book of Red Gate while he’s waiting for his order. That night, he goes along to Cambridge Geek Nights and sees some very enthusiastic Red Gaters talking about the work they do; it sounds interesting and, of all things, fun. He takes a quick look at the job vacancies on the Red Gate website, and an hour later realises he’s still there – looking at videos, photos and people profiles. He especially likes the Red Gate’s Got Talent page, and is very impressed with Simon Johnson’s marathon time. He thinks that he’d quite like to work with such awesome people. It just so happens that Red Gate recently decided that they wanted to hire another hot shot team member. Behind the scenes, the wheels were set in motion: the recruitment team met with the hiring manager to understand exactly what they’re looking for, and to decide what interview tests to do, who will do the interviews, and to kick-start any interview training those people might need. Next up, a job description and job advert were written, and the job was put on the market. Reg applies, and his CV lands in the Recruitment team’s inbox and they open it up with eager anticipation that Reg could be the next awesome new starter. He looks good, and in a jiffy they’ve arranged an interview. Reg arrives for his interview, and is greeted by a smiley receptionist. She offers him a selection of drinks and he feels instantly relaxed. A couple of interviews and an assessment later, he gets a job offer. We make his day and he makes ours by accepting, and becoming one of the 60 new starters so far this year. Behind the scenes, things start moving all over again. The HR team arranges for a “Welcome” goodie box to be whisked out to him, prepares his contract, sends an email to Information Services (Or IS for short - we’ll come back to them), keeps in touch with Reg to make sure he knows what to expect on his first day, and of course asks him to fill in the all-important wiki questionnaire so his new colleagues can start to get to know him before he even joins. Meanwhile, the IS team see an email in SupportWorks from HR. They see that Reg will be starting in the sales team in a few days’ time, and they know exactly what to do. They pull out a new machine, and within minutes have used their automated deployment software to install every piece of software that a new recruit could ever need. They also check with Reg’s new manager to see if he has any special requirements that they could help with. Reg starts and is amazed to find a fully configured machine sitting on his desk, complete with stationery and all the other tools he’ll need to do his job. He feels even more cared for after he gets a workstation assessment, and realises he’d be comfier with an ergonomic keyboard and a footstool. They arrive minutes later, just like that. His manager starts him off on his induction and sales training. Along with job-specific training, he’ll also have a buddy to help him find his feet, and loads of pre-arranged demos and introductions. Reg settles in nicely, and is great at his job. He enjoys the canteen, and regularly eats one of the 40,000 meals provided each year. He gets used to the selection of teas that are available, develops a taste for champagne launch parties, and has his fair share of the 25,000 cups of coffee downed at Red Gate towers each year. He goes along to some Feel Good Fund events, and donates a little something to charity in exchange for a turn on the chocolate fountain. He’s looking a little scruffy, so he decides to get his hair cut in between meetings, just in time for the Red Gate birthday company photo. Reg starts a new project: identifying existing customers to up-sell to new bundles. He talks with the web team to generate lists of qualifying customers who haven’t recently been sent marketing emails, and sends emails out, using a new in-house developed tool to schedule follow-up calls in CRM for the same group. The customer responds, saying they’d like to upgrade but are having a licensing problem – Reg sends the issue to Support, and it gets routed to the web team. The team identifies a workaround, and the bug gets scheduled into the next maintenance release in a fortnight’s time (hey; they got lucky). With all the new stuff Reg is working on, he realises that he’d be way more efficient if he had a third monitor. He speaks to IS and they get him one - no argument. He also needs a test machine and then some extra memory. Done. He then thinks he needs an iPad, and goes to ask for one. He gets told to stop pushing his luck. Some time later, Reg’s wife has a baby, so Reg gets 2 weeks of paid paternity leave and a bunch of flowers sent to his house. He signs up to the childcare scheme so that he doesn’t have to pay National Insurance on the first £243 of his childcare. The accounts team makes it all happen seamlessly, as they did with his Give As You Earn payments, which come out of his wages and go straight to his favorite charity. Reg’s sales career is going well. He’s grateful for the help that he gets from the product support team. How do they answer all those 900-ish support calls so effortlessly each month? He’s impressed with the patches that are sent out to customers who find “interesting behavior” in their tools, and to the customers who just must have that new feature. A little later in his career at Red Gate, Reg decides that he’d like to learn about management. He goes on some management training specially customised for Red Gate, joins the Management Book Club, and gets together with other new managers to brainstorm how to get the most out of one to one meetings with his team. Reg decides to go for a game of Foosball to celebrate his good fortune with his team, and has to wait for Finance to finish. While he’s waiting, he reflects on the wonderful time he’s had at Red Gate. He can’t put his finger on what it is exactly, but he knows he’s on to a good thing. All of the stuff that happened to Reg didn’t just happen magically. We’ve got teams of people working relentlessly behind the scenes to make sure that everyone here is comfortable, safe, well fed and caffeinated to the max.

• UFW blocks SSL connections Varnish/Apache2 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I have installed Virtualmin on a Ubuntu 12.04 server and I'm using LAMP stack with Varnish (:80) in front of Apache (:8000). However, I cannot access https when UFW is enabled. When I disable UFW, all works fine. • No Editor in Directory Utility

  I'm on OSX 10.6.8 and would like to enable the root user. I found Apple's KB article, however this point Click the lock in the Directory Utility window. Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK. Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu. is not possible, because there is no "Edit Menu" Icon! I'm logged in as admin, but I only see "Services" and "Search Policy". Repeat, I do not see the "Editor", it's just not there. What gives? How it should be: Directory Utility

  I upgraded from Ubuntu Lucid Lynx to Maverick Meerkat with the following commands: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install update-manager-core sudo vi /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and changed the last line to Prompt=normal sudo do-release-upgrade -d This upgrade was OK. I decided to repeat the same steps and to upgrade Maverick Meerkat to Natty Narwhal. It ended with this message: Building data structures... • All files trying to start in Notepad

  This question has been asked, but the solutions given were worthless to me because ALL files are trying to open in Notepad. I mistakenly associated all exe files with Notepad and everything is trying to open within Notepad now. That includes regedit, so suggesting I use regedit to doctor files does not work (cmd window will not open from Winkey + R - Run). It also includes any program I download to fix the issue. I also can not right click and choose Open With because that is not a given option when right clicking on a majority of files, at least none of the exe files I want to start. Yes, I tried it on the program files, not the shortcut. I also can not use System Restore because it, too, tries to open in Notepad. I've been banging my head uselessly on this for hours. Could someone help me out?

(I'm not concerned about the hardware control keys) cmd-T opens a browser tab cmd-C, cmd-V for copy/paste, especially in a terminal window control-c maintains the same meaning in terminal (abort) Just switching the control & command keys in Ubuntu would almost get me there, except for the special behaviour of the keys a terminal (Terminal is my most frequently used app). Has it been done? edit: using Gnome, not KDE

I downloaded a package named myspell-he_1.1-1_all.deb and tried to install it through the software center, installation failed and I can neither complete installation nor remove it. Since then, whenever I run Update Manager I get an error message: The package system is broken, In details: The following packages have unmet dependencies: dictionaries-common: When I try to run the Software center I get a pop-up window: Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired. A Repair option is suggested. • How to deal with a 'public' work environment?

  In the last 6 months, I have changed desks at my office 4 times. I don't mind, as it's due to expansion of the company and acquiring new office space and getting everybody settled. However, I truly miss the semi-private office I sat in 2 desks ago. I am now sitting in a large room with a number of other people. My problem with this isn't with my co-workers; everybody here is great. My problem is that based on the configuration of the room, no matter which desk I sit in, my monitors WILL be facing an open window. This causes a glare on my monitors, and it drives me crazy. I prefer a dark IDE theme as I find it easier on the eyes, however this just makes the glare that much worse. How should programmers cope with public office settings? Secondly, how should I cope with my specific problem? Should I give in and adopt a light IDE theme that will reduce the visibility of the glare but increase eye strain, or should I stick to my guns and find another solution?

• Applescript save command for QuickTime Player

  I've installed the Perian addon for Quicktime so it can open .flv files, and then I can save them as .m4v or .mov. I'm trying to make an Applescript to convert from .flv to .m4v automatically by using this tutorial and butchering their example applescript file, which normally converts ChemDraw files (.cdx, .cml, .mol) to .tiff, so that it instead uses Quicktime to save the .flv files as .m4v. When I try to use it, though, I get an error "QuickTime Player got an error: document 1 doesn't understand the save message". My save message is currently: save first document in target_path as ".m4v" which looks like the QuickTime dictionary's instructions: save specifier : The document(s) or window(s) to save. [as saveable file format] : The file format to use. I've also tried "m4v", without the period, and still get the error. Is my Save direction wrong, or is it probably an error from trying to use Quicktime instead of the original ChemDraw? I tried to change references to .cdx, .cml, .mol, .tiff, and ChemDraw to .flv, .m4v, and QuickTime respectively, but maybe it's more complicated than that?

I am using SQL management studio (sql server 2008) to run queries and some of the fields that come back are varchar(max) for example and it has a lot of information - Is there a zoom feature to open the window and show me the contents with vertical and horizontal scrollbars? I remember there was, i thought it was F2 but i must have been mistaken as it doesn't work Now i have to scroll horizontal on the field and its really difficult to see everything Also some of the fields contain new line codes etc so it would be great if the zoom feature would display the info using the new line codes etc Any body know how to do this?

Re-setup the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. Users of Ubuntu, Fedora or Mandriva should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. • Skype message sync and notifications - Windows 8

  The problem is that my messages don't seem to sync and neither do I get notifications from the Windows Store App. I have both, the desktop program and the Windows Store App, the problem is that whenever someone messages me I do not receive a notification of the App but I get one from the desktop program. The Skype app is running in the background and does not have disabled the notifications neither have turned on sleep notifications. I have to manually open the app and moreover, open the chat window of the one who is talking to me, then wait like 10 minutes and then the chat will get syncronized. in short: Notifications don't work even: if computer unlocked and Skype is running in background if computer unlocked and Skype is running in foreground These doesn't seem to help: Reboot doesn't affects skype. Having only the App opened. Uninstalling/reinstalling Is there a way to fix this? or is this an issue with the Skype app in Windows 8?

• Create a playlist in iTunes based on a hard drive folder

  I'd like to be able to base playlists in iTunes on a folder on my hard drive. For example, say I have this directory structure: C:\MP3s\Doctor Who Music C:\MP3s\Star Wars Music Importing all those MP3s into iTunes is really simple - at the bare bones version you can just drag the MP3 folder into the iTunes window and it does the rest. But, having done that, what I'd like to be able to do is point iTunes at each of those directories and have it turn them into their own playlists, so I end up with a Doctor Who Music and a Star Wars Music playlist based on the MP3s locations on the hard drive. Does iTunes have a way to do this, or is there a way to trick it into this with some other program? (I'm on Windows, but I'm sure Mac users would also appreciate answers to this as well.)

I found myself very good at debuggins skills, I've even found and fixed bugs in frameworks and I solved them. The problem is that I'm very weak at problem solving. I got interview with Qualcomm, and they said you're fine at software, but you have a limited problem solving, I also had the same results with Google. I'm very bad at solving puzzles and brain teasers. During the interviews I solve all of the software related problems on the blackboard, but when I went to the GM and face math problems and probabilities, I struggle. How can I improve my problem solving skills? Edit Some of the problems: A cake that is cut from anywhere and needs just one cut to halved in equal. I told him cut it horizontally, he said No, consider it as a 2D Problem!. Consider a concenteric 3 circles, each one can get a color, but not matched with the other circle, how many blobs you can make out of those circles ? this was with the GM ( Augmented Reality SDK) Consider a train, an infinite one, and you looked at the window, and there are two cars, one big, and one small, what is the probability of having only a big car, I said 50%, he said, what if that two cars you dont know their length, and you want to get the probability of getting the biggest one, I struggled, didn't solve it... I was really exahusted after long day of interviews prob of having a number divisible by 5 in numbers from 1 to 100.. struggled!! All coding questions I solved them like reverse a string, detect a cycle in a linked list,..etc.

  I did a port install for gcc version 4.7.1 (MacPorts gcc47 4.7.1_2) I named the executable as g+ and placed it in one my $PATH. I use gcc 4.7.1 when I need c++11 standard. I haven't changed the original g++ so as not messup XCode. I am using eclipse-cdt and running the make all from the window. • Synaptic won't launch from menu in panel in fresh Lubuntu minimal desktop 12.04 install

  I performed a fresh install of Lubuntu 12.04 with minimal desktop, as described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/Documentation/MinimalInstall. To clarify, I did a command-line install from the Lubuntu alternative install disc, then I did an "apt-get install --no-install-recommends lubuntu-desktop". Everything is working fine, except that Synaptic will not run from the menu entry in the panel. I am not prompted for a password, and no window of any sort appears after clicking the menu entry. I installed lxshortcut to see what the shortcut was running, and the command is "synaptic-pkexec". If I type this command into the "Run" menu, I get the same behavior (or lack thereof). I can get Synaptic to open up just fine by typing "gksudo synaptic" at the "Run" menu. Also, if I run "synaptic-pkexec" from the terminal, then I am prompted for my password within the terminal, and after that Synaptic opens normally. Can someone please suggest the right way to get Synaptic working? I could just change the menu entry to "gksudo synaptic", but I'm guessing that it's set to "synaptic-pkexec" for a reason. I have a vague understanding that this pkexec business has something to do with PolicyKit, but I don't really know what PolicyKit is or how to tell if something is broken with it. Thanks.

• Close all Mac Terminal windows, but the one running a script

  I am trying to create a shell script that runs a python simulation programing in 4 terminal windows. I have the script that launches the program four times in four separate terminal windows(total of 5 windows, 4 for the python programs, and one to control the other terminal windows). I want to now create a script that I can run in the control terminal window that closes and kills the programs of the other four terminal windows, but still have the control one open. What I have so far is something like this #!/bin/sh osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" do script "killall python" end tell' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to quit' osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to open' The problem is that the last line doesn't work because it closes all the windows including the one the script is executing in. I am not really familiar with shell or apple script so any help would be welcomed. I posted on Stack, but I think this might be a better place for an automation type question. Thanks

My case is: At work we are in a discussion with team members who seem to think bots will cause us problems relating to performance when running on our services website. Out setup: Lets say I have site www.mysite.co.uk this is a shop window to our online services which sit on www.mysiteonline.co.uk. When people search in google for mysite they see mysiteonline.co.uk as well as mysite.co.uk. Cases against stopping bots crawling: We don't store gb's of data publicly available on the web Most friendly bots, if they were to cause issues would have done so already In our instance the bots can't crawl the site because it requires username & password Stopping bots with robot .txt causes an issue with seo (ref.1) If it was a malicious bot, it would ignore robot.txt or meta tags anyway Ref 1. If we were to block mysiteonline.co.uk from having robots crawl this will affect seo rankings and make it inconvenient for users who actively search for mysite to find mysiteonline. Which we can prove is the case for a good portion of our users.

• Using Automator to click on an Application-specific button

  I'm new to Automator. I need to launch a specific application and to click on one of its buttons. I've used the "Watch Me Do" feature to register the button click but, in the Automator events log, this action is being reported as "Bring the window XXX to the front." I'm then wondering if a better way exists to "record" a button-click. The reason behind my question is linked to this: http://superuser.com/questions/148386/mac-running-an-automator-task-at-night In fact, using the "Watch me do" approach, Automator is apparently not able to perform the click action when the machine is on sleep and a password is required.
