• Accessing second hard drive

  So I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit on my computer. I installed it on my 60gb SSD hard drive, and in the installation it never acknowledged the existence of my second hard drive. The hard drive that I keep all my files on, and which I want to make my home folder if I can, is a Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB cache (WD1002FAEX). I've read the following: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Mount but honestly cannot work out how to access the hard drive from my Ubuntu installation. I did have Windows 7 64-bit prior to installing Ubuntu. I have backed up all the files on the hard drive, but if I could just access them straight off that would be super cool. Does anyone know how I can use the second hard drive? Looks like I'll have to unplug and re-plug hardware if I want it working still :(

• Ubuntu installed along side Win 8 but not shown in boot

  Actually the question says it all, but let me tell you what I did, so u may find exactly what might have went wrong: I have Win 8 installed on 500 GB HDD. SO I shrunk it four times for: partition 1 - the original partition containing Win 8 sys (118GB) partition 2 - NTFS formatted for my data (188GB) partition 3 - NTFS formatted for my data (100GB) partition 4 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (I reformatted it to ext4 during Ubuntu installation) (25GB) partition 5 - NTFS formatted for Linux distro 1 (21GB) So now I booted Ubuntu from USB (created from ubuntu-12.04-desktop-amd64.iso) and deleted last two partitions 4 and 5 to create: partition 1 - ext4 where I installed Ubuntu (25GB) partition 2 - Swap (4GB) partition 3 - unallocated space, not formatted yet (17GB) Ubuntu installation said it installed successfully and that I have to restart to boot in Ubuntu. But when I restart Windows 8 auto booted - there was no dual boot. • How to turn off screen (DPMS) together with locking session in KDE?

  First of all, I'm aware a similar question for GNOME is asked here: "Switch off laptop backlight when locking screen". Objective I would like to turn off my screen on locking the session for power saving reasons. Actual problem Locking the screen on Kubuntu (KDE) inevitably triggers the screensaver as far as I can see. There's no screensaver option other than 'Blank screen' together with its background colour set to black that comes just close to my goal. It blanks the screen, but doesn't turn off the screen. Screen's backlight will still be on and not saving any power. Current workaround A workaround via a script + shortcut key is possible, however, it's just a workaround since it doesn't trigger on all ways to lock the session. Therefore, I think it should be possible to have it done more elegantly, for example by providing this option in KDE's configuration dialog of the screensaver. The workaround I am now using is the following. A script that locks the screen and turns off the screen: #!/bin/bash qdbus org.freedesktop.ScreenSaver /ScreenSaver Lock xset dpms force standby and let it run with a shortcut key via a custom menu entry. It works. Here's why I consider it to be a workaround rather than a solution. It doesn't work for other ways to trigger the locking of the session. My actual question(s) Do I need to touching/patching KDE's source? If not what are my options? If so, could someone point me to where I can get started? what do you think is the recommended place in the GUI for configuration? I'm using Kubuntu 12.04 and willing to upgrade to KDE 4.9 or waiting for the 12.10 release.

• Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

  Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

• setting up freedns with an existing domain

  I've been running a webserver off of a pc at a static IP succesfully for the past 5 months. recently however, I've moved into another appartment and my ISP only provides a dynamic IP (my IP changes from time to time). I'm not an internet genius but I was thinking to fix this by using a Dynamic DNS provider. So I got on the web and found freedns. I'm a bit confused about how to set up everything though. I've managed to succesfully install the IP updater daemon on my web server. Then, in my registrars control panel, I set the NS records to point at ns1 through ns4.afraid.org (removing the old NS records). I'm not certain what I should do with the A records though (for now they are still pointing to the old static IP address). I have A records for www, blog, irc, etc. but I cannot point them at my new IP address, because it isn't Could someone explain this in the clearest possible sense (perhaps elaborating on what happens at each step of the DNS process). I never really knew what the A records are for anyway. (note that I haven't really found any documentation at the freedns website, or on google)

• Disaster Recovery Example

  Previously, I use to work for a small internet company that sells dental plans online. Our primary focus concerning disaster prevention and recovery is on our corporate website and private intranet site. We had a multiphase disaster recovery plan that includes data redundancy, load balancing, and off-site monitoring. Data redundancy is a key aspect of our disaster recovery plan. The first phase of this is to replicate our data to multiple database servers and schedule daily backups of the databases that are stored off site. The next phase is the file replication of data amongst our web servers that are also backed up daily by our collocation. In addition to the files located on the server, files are also stored locally on development machines, and again backed up using version control software. Load balancing is another key aspect of our disaster recovery plan. Load balancing offers many benefits for our system, better performance, load distribution and increased availability. With our servers behind a load balancer our system has the ability to accept multiple requests simultaneously because the load is split between multiple servers. Plus if one server is slow or experiencing a failure the traffic is diverted amongst the other servers connected to the load balancer allowing the server to get back online. The final key to our disaster recovery plan is off-site monitoring that notifies all IT staff of any outages or errors on the main website encountered by the monitor. Messages are sent by email, voicemail, and SMS. According to Disasterrecovery.org, disaster recovery planning is the way companies successfully manage crises with minimal cost and effort and maximum speed compared to others that are forced to make decision out of desperation when disasters occur. In addition Sun Guard stated in 2009 that the first step in disaster recovery planning is to analyze company risks and factor in fixed costs for things like hardware, software, staffing and utilities, as well as indirect costs, such as floor space, power protection, physical and information security, and management. Also availability requirements need to be determined per application and system as well as the strategies for recovery.

• ASP.NET design not SOLID

  SOLID principles are described here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOLID_%28object-oriented_design%29 I am developing a large ASP.NET app. The previous developer created a few very large classes each with lots of different purposes. It is very difficult to maintain and extend. The classes are deployed to the web server along with the code behind files etc. I want to share a small amount of the app with another application. I am considering moving all of the classes of the ASP.NET web app to a DLL, so the small subset of functionality can be shared. I realise it would be better to only share the classes which contain code to be shared but because of the dependencies this is proving to be very difficult e.g. class A contains code that should be shared, however class A contains references to classes B, C, D, E, F, G etc, so class A cannot be shared on its own. I am planning to refactor the code in the future. As a temporary solution I am planning to convert all the classes into a single class library. Is this a bad idea and if so, is there an alternative? as I don't have time to refactor at the moment.

• Baseline for GIS Applications

  The application I introduced here yesterday can best be understood via its author's explanation: "As I developed several different WorldWind-based applications, I noticed that they all started out the same. Terramenta was born so I wouldn't have to recreate the baseline every time, I could just provide NetBeans plugin modules to introduce the new features required by different projects." So, to try it out for myself, I checked out the sources from the Mercurial repo today, built them, and ran them. hg clone https://bitbucket.org/heidtmare/terramenta On Windows, things worked fine, on Ubuntu they didn't because the relevant native libraries aren't provided yet out of the box. Here's the result: The above provides the WorldWind globe, together with all the standard options, e.g., for showing names and other WorldWind features, together with several features that I don't understand yet, such as tools for creating shapes and a recorder for replaying sequences. The complete application is like this, i.e., one single functionality module is provided, which exposes several API packages that can be extended: It would really be cool if the above module could also be added to a Maven-based application via a reference to a Maven repository, in the way that Timon Veenstra and the AgroSense team have made available their GeoViewer. One cool thing from the GeoViewer solution is the Flamingo menubar, which I added to Terramenta by simply putting the dependency below into the application POM: <dependency>    <groupId>nl.cloudfarming.client</groupId>    <artifactId>menu</artifactId>    <version>1.0.24</version></dependency> The result, without doing anything other than the above: I am looking forward to helping to document the use cases and developer scenarios for Terramenta! • Ubuntu 13.10 Unity doesn't load after upgrade

  Just upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 only to find that Unity won't load (login freezes, after doing ctrl+alt+F1, logging in and then doing startx, I get a blank desktop and the mouse pointer, and nothing else). I can right click, but the only operations that work are "create new file" and "create new folder". For example, "change desktop background" doesn't work. Also, after doing a few right clicks and choosing "change desktop background", I get a warning message box: "compiz closed unexpectedly." Guest login works fine. Tried creating a new user, but I experience the same thing with the new user. Tried removing all configuration files from my home directory... same thing. Doing dconf reset -f /org/compiz/ gives an error "error spawning command line..." Doing unity --reset also gives errors. Tried uninstalling unity (and compiz) and reinstalling, but that doesn't help. Tried reconfiguring lightdm, didn't help. I don't have any proprietary drivers installed. Once again, the funny thing is that the guest session works fine.

• New SPC2 benchmark- The 7420 KILLS it !!!

  This is pretty sweet. The new SPC2 benchmark came out last week, and the 7420 not only came in 2nd of ALL speed scores, but came in #1 for price per MBPS. Check out this table. The 7420 score of 10,704 makes it really fast, but that's not the best part. The price one would have to pay in order to beat it is ridiculous. Very sweet for Oracle. So let's see, the 7420 is the fastest per $. The 7420 is the cheapest per MBPS. The 7420 has incredible, built-in features, management services, analytics, and protocols. It's extremely stable and as a cluster has no single point of failure. It won the Storage Magazine award for best NAS system this year. So how long will it be before it's the number 1 NAS system in the market? What are the biggest hurdles still stopping the widespread adoption of the ZFSSA? From what I see, it's three things: 1. Administrator's comfort level with older legacy systems. 2. Politics 3. Past issues with Oracle Support.   I see all of these issues crop up regularly. Number 1 just takes time and education. Number 3 takes time with our new, better, and growing support team. many of them came from Oracle and there were growing pains when they went from a straight software-model to having to also support hardware. Number 2 is tricky, but it's the job of the sales teams to break through the internal politics and help their clients see the value in oracle hardware systems. Benchmarks like this will help.

• How to set an old view? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to revert to GNOME Classic? is it possible to change general view in Ubuntu 12.04 so it was like in Ubuntu 10.04? I really liked old one and really don't like new one. Things that are annoying me: menu on the left with large icons lack of workspaces icons in right bottom corner lack of menu: Applications, Places, System in left top corner menu like: file | edit | view | help resize and red cross is available in all applications at the very top of the pulpit, unless at the very top of the application window I know it may sound crazy, but that's all me, don't like changes despite that I know they are often good. I would be very grateful for any help. I really want old view (exactly like here: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2d/UbuntuMaverickDesktop.png) back. By the way, if I installed Ubuntu 12.04 by WUBI from Windows level on separated partition, then what is the easiest way to uninstall it? Can I simply format this partition? I'm wondering because I don't know if it is safe, what about boot loader etc.

  At the NIST Cloud Computing Workshop this week; representatives from Canada, China, and Japan presented on their cloud computing efforts. Some interesting points made: Canada: Building "Service Canada" cloud for all citizen services, but raised the issue of data location...cloud data must be within Canada border, so they will not focus on public clouds where they don't know or can't control data location. Japan: In response to the massive destruction of the Great East Japan Earthquake, Japan is building nation-wide cloud services to support disaster relief, data recovery, and support for rebuilding new communities. US Ambassador Philip Verveer discussed the need for international cooperation and standards development to enable interoperability of cloud services, keeping in mind cultural and political differences. Additionally, an industry panel reported on cloud standards development, including some actual interoperability testing at http://www.cloudplugfest.org. Much of the first two days of the workshop covered progress and action plans around the 10 High-Priority Requirements to Further USG Agency Cloud Computing Adoption. Thursday's sessions will cover the work of the various NIST Cloud Computing Working Groups on Reference Architecture and Taxonomy Standards Acceleration to Jumpstart the Adoption of Cloud Computing (SAJACC) Cloud Security Standards Roadmap Business Use Cases (see Working Groups of NIST Cloud Computing )

• Custom LightDM sessions to launch an application

  I'm trying to set up Ubuntu to act as a kiosk running a custom application, and am trying to get a LightDM session built to automatically start it. Ideally, I'd like to have two sessions available from LightDM. The default would start my application fullscreened, and the other would open a minimal desktop in case any configuration (mostly connecting to a wireless network) needed to be done. I've done a lot of research over the last week on custom LightDM & Gnome sessions. I've got a custom greeter written for LightDM that can start either session, but I can't figure out how to add a specific application to the Gnome session that is ultimately started without just putting a launcher in the global startup directory, and I don't want to do that since I don't want the application starting when they open "configuration mode". Another problem I've run into on my current workaround is that the application doesn't fullscreen properly, which makes me think I'm not starting enough of a gnome session (currently it's just metacity, no panel or anything else). • PhysX Capsule Character Controller floating above ground

  I am using PhysX Version 3.0.2 in the simulation package I'm working on, and I've encountered some bizarre behavior with the capsule character controller. When I set the controller's height and radius to the appropriate values (r = 0.25, h = 1.86)it behaves correctly (moving along the ground, colliding with other objects, and so on) except that the capsule itself is floating above the ground. The actor will then bump his head when trying to get through a door, since the capsule is the correct height but also floating above the ground. This image should illustrate what I'm going on about: One can clearly see that the rest of the scene has their collision bodies wrapped correctly, it's just the capsule that's going wrong! The stop-gap I've implemented is creating a smaller capsule and giving it an offset, but I need to implement ray-picking for the controller next so the capsule has to surround the character model properly. • Installing latest version of R-base

  I have been unsuccessfully trying to install the latest version (2.15.2) of r-base. Apparently, R package "Rcpp" would not install for R version 2.14.1 - the version that installs for me. I am not sure what/how/where to change my installation attempts which appear below. Please note that I am using ubuntu-12.04.1-server-i386.   Do I need to post another thread for the same? If so, sorry. Yes, I saw that it's been well over six months but I have the same router SmartAX MT880d with ethernet, and the exact same problem, that is no internet even though I can successfully reach the modem settings page by entering 192.168.1.1 in Firefox. Sorry if I don't use the right (technical) terminology to express my issue. English is not my mother tongue. I'm a total beginner with ubuntu. My internet works great in Windows but does not work in Ubuntu. For 2 weeks, I've kept reading on the web and forums and the ubuntuguide.org to name a few but to no avail. Now I see no other solution but to ask for help. My problem is that as a beginner, I can't find a way to put the right digits in the right place because I don't know what numbers I need to put in what files (eg: do I need to use DHCP? or a static IP address? No clue whatsoever. I'm confused between putting figures in the wrong spaces. For example, is the modem/router's IP exactly 192.168.1.1 for Huawei Smart AXMT880d modem?? Is the subnet 255.255.255.0? Gateway 192.168.1.1. I'm confused as I can also see a different IP starting with 155131*** (is it an account number? no clue again) on my contract with Huawei (a Chinese ISP). Apart from calling 911, what other numbers do I need to put in and where? How do I check that all the numbers have been entered correctly in every appropriate space before trying to connect the Internet?

• why doesn't my computer resume after sleeping overnight?

  i'm having a weird, weird bug that's been haunting me since 11.10. if i listen to music or watch a video and my computer automatically goes to sleep at night, it won't properly resume in the morning. otherwise, suspend and resume works just fine. what happens is that the wi-fi and bluetooth indicator (that turns from white to orange when suspending) stays orange, the display doesn't turn on, and the only option i have is to hard reset the machine. here's what i've tried so far: installing (and uninstalling and reinstalling) laptop-mode-tools switching the proprietary wireless driver (broadcom-wl) to the open source one (brcmsmac & bcma) and back unloading (and blacklisting) all bluetooth modules (rfcomm, btusb, bnep, bluetooth) and stopping (# stop bluetooth) and disabling (# echo 'manual' /etc/init/bluetooth.override) the bluetooth service creating a custom pm sleep action as suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11926504 not watching youtube / any stuff that uses flash before going to sleep (i have flashblock, and i checked $ ps aux | grep flash) because i suspected flash to be the culprit trying out different versions of fglrx (the one from the repos, then installing the latest one from amd's site via generated .deb files, then back to the official ones) none of these worked. i remember back in the days of 10.04, there was a gconf key called network sleep: i thought about disabling that, since re-enabling the wireless card seems to be the problem (according to the indicator led), but the option appears to be missing from gnome 3 (unity-2d, whatever). does anyone have any ideas? thanks, bamdad

  Several developers, especially those familiar with equivalent functionality in Eclipse, have been asking for so-called "Save Actions", that is, support for actions that are automatically performed when a file is saved. Here's the related NetBeans issue: http://netbeans.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=140719   In NetBeans IDE 7.3, the issue is resolved as follows: A new "On Save" tab is found in the "Editor" tab of the Options window. Defaults for all languages are set via the "All Languages" item in the drop-down. Here, for all languages, you can specify what kind (all, none, or only modified lines) of formatting and space removal will occur automatically when a file is saved: Via the drop-down, you see all the languages supported by the IDE: You can pick a language and then override the default On Save settings: Per language, there may be additional On Save settings. For example, for Java, you can specify that, when saving a Java file, unused import statements should be removed and/or the rules you've set for organizing import statements should be applied: There's also a set of new NetBeans IDE APIs for adding new On Save functionality via custom plugins. Via MIME type registration of OnSaveTask.Factory, you can register new On Save actions that will be run for files conforming to the relevant MIME type. There's also extensions via the Editor Options API for registering new panels (one per language) to the On Save panel in the Options window. I'll demonstrate some examples of the APIs in upcoming blog entries.

• How to host an AP or a hotspot?

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 as a virtual machine on my Mac. Since I am unable to get the virtual machine to have full access to my WiFi card, I bought another USB WiFi card to use. This is my WiFi card. If you are unfamiliar with Virtual machine, as far as I know, since the Ubuntu has its own card now, it shouldn't matter. However the connection times out on all of these machines. Questions: Could this be a driver issue if that same WiFi card can connect to other WiFi points and use its internet Could this be DHCP related? I would think not. It should at least get a 169.X.X.X address? No? Any solutions for me?

  The dash home button brings up a panel that is greyed out, but it is totally empty. Unity seems to reset, but I get the following warning over and over: cs space validation failed unity What should I do next to try and fix this? Edit: Attempted fixes: I've refomatted, did not work. I've done apt-get remove unity then apt-get update then apt-get install unity, did not work. I've switched to Unity 2d and this seems to work. How can I get regualar Unity working or atleast find the error?

• How can I configure the embedded wireless card in a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 to work under Lubuntu 10.10?

  I'm struggling to get the embedded wireless card in this laptop to work. In 7.10 (gutsy) it worked fine. Now I'm trying to get 10.10 (maverick) working on it, and am using the Lubuntu flavour due to the low resources of this laptop. The hardware: Appears to be an embedded pcmcia card. pccardctl ident gives: Socket 0: product info: "TOSHIBA", "Wireless LAN Card", "Version 01.01", "" manfid: 0x0156, 0x0002 function: 6 (network) The default kernel recognises the card and loads the orinoco_cs driver. orinoco_cs 0.0: Hardware identity 0005:0002:0001:0002 orinoco_cs 0.0: Station identity 001f:0001:0006:000e orinoco_cs 0.0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 6.14 Then for some reason, the driver isn't happy with this and gives: orinoco_cs 0.0: Hardware identity 0005:0002:0001:0002 orinoco_cs 0.0: Station identity 001f:0002:0009:0030 orinoco_cs 0.0: Firmware determined as Lucent/Agere 9.48 All seems ok until I try to associate with my access point using Network Manager. eth1: Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming repeated about 10 times then NM gives up. According to the linuxwireless.org wiki page on this driver, this is a known issue, and I quote: Known issues Roaming and WPA_supplicant Lucent/Agere firmware doesn't support manual roaming On the Agere cards, roaming is controlled by the firmware instead of userspace. You will get the above message if userspace attempts to associate with a specific AP rather than by SSID. If you are using wpa_supplicant use ap_scan=2 mode. NetworkManager uses wpa_supplicant, so the above also applies. At this point my google-fu has failed me, and I can't find how to configure network manager to use the mystical "ap_scan=2" mode via wpa_supplicant. I have tried the following suggested solutions (from launchpad or the forums) deleting the agere* files from /lib/firmware using wicd instead of network manager combining both blacklisting the orinoco_cs driver in an attempt to force use of the hostap_cs driver instead (in case it is a prism2 card). Obviously none of them have worked for me. Any hints on how to perform the suggested workaround above? Edit: I have also confirmed working on 8.10 (intrepid) live CD.
