• Use Alladin eToken with ThunderBird and other tool

  I'm looking for an example on how to setup the eToken PRO Java device to work with Mozilla Thunderbird and with other Linux tool such as PAM logon. I installed distributed pkiclient-5.00.28-0.i386.RPM from the official product page eToken Pro but that tool only handles importing/exporting certificates on the device. I read a glance an old HOWTO from eToken on Linux, but I couldn't install pkcs11-lib for this device as recommended for Thunderbird use this crypto device. • JVM system time runs faster than HP UNIX OS system time

Line 2 was output from database query select sysdate from dual; Line 3 was output from java code new Date() I have checked from shell date command that line 2 output conforms with OS time. The output of line 3 was mysterious. I don't know how it comes from Java VM. • Backup solution, or, how Duplicati duped me

  TL/DR version: Mono + Duplicati.commandline.exe restore etc. etc. spits this out for several files regardless of what I try. I am able to list sets, list files in said sets, even do a verify, but each time i do a restore of any kind, i get errors to the effect of : Failed to restore file: "snapshot/blahblah/2005-11-07.tar.gz", Error message: The partial file record for snapshot/blahblah/2005-11-07.tar.gz does not match the file Any advice here, or an idea of where to look for a better solution? FULL STORY: Ive recently put together an nice clean, friendly backup solution for several servers, predominantly Linux, but occasionally a windows box is added too. The solution as is meets all my requirements and does it well... save 1: cross-compatibility The solution is based on a combination of several elements, but eventually comes done to using Duplicity and Duplicati for the actual storage of files. The entire solution was ready to go before i realized that Duplicati, does not, in fact allow me to restore my files to a Linux box, regardless of what the commandline under Mono might tell you. It just spits out errors on random zip and image files, for apparently no good reason as i have tried several options to get it to restore, and several versions of Mono including installing it pretty much lib-for-lib. There is no effective log file for the reasons for these errors, and even the "--debug-output=true" flag does nothing. I am able to list sets, list files in said sets, even do a verify, but each time i do a restore of any kind, i get errors to the effect of : Failed to restore file: "snapshot/blahblah/2005-11-07.tar.gz", Error message: The partial file record for snapshot/blahblah/2005-11-07.tar.gz does not match the file Now i could most likely use the friendly instructions on Duplicati's site and script a bash equivalent of the restore, but that's not exactly ideal. Any advice on this? or possibly an alternative solution that presents the same benefits of Duplicati/Duplicity but that actually works across platforms?

• FTP Server on Centos 5.8 - Transfer fails randomly

  Hi have ProFTPD runningon a brand new CentOS 5.8 server with Plesk, and its behaviour is inconsistent at best. I tried to transfer a directory from my PC, and every time I get a transfer failed on a random file. It's never the same one that fails, it just fails. Sometimes it's a .gif, sometimes it's a .css, sometimes it's a JPG. Of several hundred files, a dozen is always failing for no apparent reason. The error that I get is the following: COMMAND:> [27/11/2012 11:43:52] STOR main_border.gif [27/11/2012 11:43:53] 500 Invalid command: try being more creative ERROR:> [27/11/2012 11:43:53] Syntax error: command unrecognized. The above is just an example, the "command unrecognized" occurs with LIST and other commands as well. Thanks in advance for the help. Update Issue experienced with CuteFTP and FileZilla. Update Replaced ProFTPd with PureFTPd, issue persists. Sometimes I get "command unrecognized", sometimes "failed to establish data connection". I'm starting to think that it could be a network issue, but I have completely zero knowledge of networking.

• Using NX with no PasswordAuthentication SSH setup

  I'm trying to setup passwordless SSH access. My username is bmccann, so in /etc/ssh/sshd_config I added: PermitRootLogin no PasswordAuthentication no AllowUsers bmccann nx I ran ssh-keygen on the client and put ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub from the client into ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server. I can now login with no password using the ssh command. However, I can no longer access the machine via NX as long as /etc/ssh/sshd_config has "PasswordAuthentication no". • Multimaster Keepalived Configuration (Virtual IP with Load Balancing)

  Here are requirements: 1. High Availability 2. Load Balancing First configuration 1. Two linux servers have been configured with one static IP for each: 10.17.243.11, 10.17.243.12 2. Keepalived has been installed and configured with one VRRP instance to provide one virtual IP (10.17.243.10 as VIP, 10.17.243.11 as master and 10.17.243.12 as backup). 3. Everything works fine. The VIP is assigned to the master server (10.17.243.11) as long as it is up and running. As soon as it goes down, the VIP will be assigned to the backup server (10.17.243.12). 4. The problem here is all communication goes to the master server. Second configuration 1. I found active-active configuration for Keepalived which is possible by defining more than one VRRP instance. So that both server have two IPs (real 10.17.243.11 and virtual 10.17.243.10 for server #1 and real 10.17.243.12 and virtual 10.17.243.20 for server #2. 2. Everything works fine. we have two VIPs which are accessible (HA). But all communication coming to each IP still goes to one single machine (either server #1 or #2 depending on the IP). However I found some tricks on the DNS to overcome this limitation. But it's not acceptable in our case. Question: Is there any way to have one virtual IP which is assigned to both servers? By that I mean both servers are handling some part of workload (like the thing we do in web server load balancing)? By using either keepalived or some other tools? Thanks in advance.

• QMail do not delivery to remote mailboxes for my own domain

  Sorry for the title, I don't know how to sum up this situation. I have a web server at mydomain.com, running qmail for website related mail delivery (i.e. newsletter, sign up confirmation, etc). qmail here is used only to send mails, because I have a fully working Google App Gmail associated with mydomain.com for normal email receiving. qmail runs fine when sending email to remote addresses, for example to [email protected], but fails when sending to [email protected]. I think it's because the server thinks that he have to manage mailboxes for mydomain.com locally, instead of redirect them to Gmail. • What is the best private cloud storage setup

  I need to create a private cloud and I'm searching for the best setup. These are my 2 most important requirements 1. Disk and system redundant 2. Price / GB as low as possible The system is going to be used as backup setup which will receive data 24/7 over SFTP and rsync. High throughput is not that important. I'm planning to use glusterfs and consumer grade 4TB hard-drives. I have worked out 3 possible setups 3 servers with 11 4TB HDD Setup up a replica 3 glusterfs and setup each hard drive as a separate ext4 brick. Total capacity: 44TB HDD / TB ratio of 0.75 (33HDD / 44TB) 2 servers with 11 4TB HDD The 11 hard-drives are combined in a RAIDZ3 ZFS storage pool. With a replica 2 gluster setup. Total capacity: 32TB (+ zfs compression) HDD / TB ratio of 0.68 (22HDD / 32TB) 3 servers with 11 4TB consumer hard-drives Setup up a replica 3 glusterfs and setup each hard-drive as a separate zfs storage pool and export each pool as a brick. Total capacity: 32TB (+ zfs compression) HDD / TB ratio of 0.68 (22HDD / 32TB) (Cheapest) My remarks and concerns: If a hard drive fails which setup will recover the quickest? In my opinion setup 1 and 3 because there only the contents of 1 hard-drive needs to be copied over the network. Instead of setup 2 were the hard-drive needs te be reconstructed by reading the parity of all the other harddrives in the system. Will a zfs pool on 1 harddrive give me extra protection against for example bit rot? With setup 1 and 3 I can loose 2 systems and still be up and running with setup 2 I can only loose 1 system. When I use ZFS I can enable compression which will give me some extra storage.

• Intermittent FTP login issues (Microsoft IIS FTP Service)

  I've got a somewhat weird problem which I'm not sure how to troubleshoot. We have a FTP running on a Windows Server 2003 machine using the IIS FTP Service, this is for our clients and is configured with IP-restrictions. However, now ONE of the clients starts complaining that they can't log in to the server from time to time. This is just ONE of 10+ clients that have this issue, which makes me think it's a problem on their side. Just to be on the safe side I had a peek into the FTP logs and found something strange. • Website latency and bad tcp packets

  I have multiple websites hosted on a Linode VPS and I'm having an issue with one of them: every page that I try to load has about 10 seconds latency. Apache logs are clean and the other websites on the same machine are running well. At a first glance I tought it was a memory problem since the VPS has got only 512M, but from the linode dashboard CPU and Disk I/O are normal. Anyway here we have the ram status: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 487 463 23 0 2 55 -/+ buffers/cache: 404 82 Swap: 255 155 100 Only 23M free, but if it was a memory problem why other websites are going as usual? I took a live capture with wireshark, and there are some duplicates SYN ACK packets just before the 10 seconds gap. I'm out of ideas, looking for some clues. • Taking advantage of Windows Azure CDN and Dynamic Pages in ASP.NET - Caching content from hosted services

  With the updates to Windows Azure CDN announced this week [1] I wanted to help illustrate the capability with a working sample that will serve up dynamic content from an ASP.NET site hosted in a WebRole. First, to get a good overview of the capability you can read the Overview of the Windows Azure CDN [2] content on MSDN. When you setup the ability to cache content from a hosted service, the requirement is to provide a path to your role’s DNS endpoint that ends in the path “/cdn”.  Additionally, you then map CDN to that service. What WAZ CDN does, is allow you to then map that through the CDN to your host.  The CDN will then make a request to your host on your client’s behalf. The requirement is still that your client, and any Url’s that are to be serviced through the CDN and this capability have to use the CDN DNS name and not your host – no different than what CDN does for Blog storage. The following 2 URL’s are samples of how the client needs to issue the requests. Windows Azure hosted service URL: http: //myHostedService.cloudapp.net/cdn/music.aspx   - for regular “dynamic” content Windows Azure CDN URL: http: //<identifier>.vo.msecnd.net/music.aspx   - for CDN “cachable” content. The first URL path’s the request direct to your host into the Azure datacenter.  The 2nd URL paths the request through the CDN infrastructure, where CDN will make the determination to request the content on behalf of the client to the Azure datacenter and your host on the /cdn path. The big advantage here is you can apply logic to your content creation.  What’s important is emitting the CDN friendly headers that allow CDN to request and re-request only when you designate based upon it’s rules of “staleness” as described in the overview page. With IIS7.5 there is an underlying issue when the Managed Module “OutputCache” is enabled that in order to emit a good header for your content, you’ll need to remove, and in my sample, helps provide CDN friendly headers.  You get IIS 7.5 when running under OS Family “2” in your service configuration. By default, and when the OutputCache managed module is loaded, if you use the HttpResponse.CachePolicy to set the Http Headers for “max-age” when the HttpCacheability is “Public”, you will NOT get the “max-age” emitted as part of the “Cache-control:” header.  Instead, the OutputCache module will remove “max-age” and just emit “public”.  It works ok when Cacheability is set to “private”. To work around the issue and ensure your code as follows emits the full max-age along with the public option, you need to remove as follows: <system.webServer>   <modules runAllManagedModulesForAllRequests="true">     <remove name="OutputCache"/>   </modules> </system.webServer>   Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Public); Response.Cache.SetMaxAge(TimeSpan.FromMinutes(rv));   In the attached solution, the way I approached it was to have a VirtualApplication under the root site that has it’s own web.config  - this VirtualApplication is the /cdn of the site and when deployed to Azure as a Web Role will surface as a distinct IIS Application – along with a separate AppDomain. The CDN Sample is a simple Web Forms site that the /default landing page contains 3 IFrames to host: 1. Content direct from the host @   http://xxxx.cloudapp.net/cdn 2. Content via the CDN @ http://azxxx.vo.msecnd.net  3. Simple list of recent requests – showing where the request came from.   When you run the sample the first time you hit the page, both the Host and the CDN will cause 2 initial requests to hit the host.  You won’t see the first requests in the list because of timing – but if you refresh, you’ll see that the list will show that you have 2 requests initially. 1. sourced direct from the Browser to the HOST 2. sourced via the CDN The picture above shows the call-outs of each of those requests – green rows showing requests coming direct to the HOST, yellow showing the CDN request.  The IP addresses of the green items are direct from the client, where the CDN is from the CDN data center. As you refresh the page (hit Ctrl+F5 to force a full refresh and avoid “304 – not changed”) you’ll see that the request to the HOST get’s processed direct; but the request to the CDN endpoint is serviced direct from the CDN and doesn’t incur any additional request back to the HOST. • World Record Oracle Business Intelligence Benchmark on SPARC T4-4

  Oracle's SPARC T4-4 server configured with four SPARC T4 3.0 GHz processors delivered the first and best performance of 25,000 concurrent users on Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (BI EE) 11g benchmark using Oracle Database 11g Release 2 running on Oracle Solaris 10. A SPARC T4-4 server running Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g achieved 25,000 concurrent users with an average response time of 0.36 seconds with Oracle BI server cache set to ON. The benchmark data clearly shows that the underlying hardware, SPARC T4 server, and the Oracle BI EE 11g (11.1.1.6.0 64-bit) platform scales within a single system supporting 25,000 concurrent users while executing 415 transactions/sec. The benchmark demonstrated the scalability of Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g 11.1.1.6.0, which was deployed in a vertical scale-out fashion on a single SPARC T4-4 server. Oracle Internet Directory configured on SPARC T4 server provided authentication for the 25,000 Oracle BI EE users with sub-second response time. A SPARC T4-4 with internal Solid State Drive (SSD) using the ZFS file system showed significant I/O performance improvement over traditional disk for the Web Catalog activity. In addition, ZFS helped get past the UFS limitation of 32767 sub-directories in a Web Catalog directory. The multi-threaded 64-bit Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition 11g and SPARC T4-4 server proved to be a successful combination by providing sub-second response times for the end user transactions, consuming only half of the available CPU resources at 25,000 concurrent users, leaving plenty of head room for increased load. The Oracle Business Intelligence on SPARC T4-4 server benchmark results demonstrate that comprehensive BI functionality built on a unified infrastructure with a unified business model yields best-in-class scalability, reliability and performance. Oracle BI EE 11g is a newer version of Business Intelligence Suite with richer and superior functionality. Results produced with Oracle BI EE 11g benchmark are not comparable to results with Oracle BI EE 10g benchmark. The user then proceeds to view the Customer Satisfaction dashboard, which also contains a set of 4 related reports, drills down on some of the reports to see the detail data. The BI user continues to view more dashboards – Customer Satisfaction and Service Request Overview, for example. After navigating through those dashboards, the user logs out of the application. The benchmark test is executed against a full production version of the Oracle Business Intelligence 11g Applications with a fully populated underlying database schema. The business processes in the test scenario closely represent a real world customer scenario. This seems ludicrous to me, and I'm wondering if anyone knows if this policy is still in place. I can't seem to find a EULA online anywhere, so I don't know where to find this information. I know my laptop is due for replacement soon, and I want to know if I'm going to have to sink $600 into a software product I already purchased. • Oracle Solaris 11.1 Security Lab

  Recently I developed a set of lab exercises for an Oracle OpenWorld Hands On Lab, entitled HOL10201, Reduce Risk with Oracle Solaris Access Control to Restrain Users and Isolate Applications. This explored the new Extended Policy for privilege assignments in Oracle Solaris 11.1.  Today, Oracle Solaris 11.1 has been officially released via the Package Repository. Today's release and branch are numbered 0.5.11-0.175.1.0.0.24.2, which means it is based on build 24b of 11.1 which is, in turn, based on build 175a of 11.0.  There is a good summary of new features available here: Oracle Solaris 11.1 - What's New . Pages 5 thru 7 give an overview of some of the new security enhancements. There is much more information available in the newly published documentation for Oracle Solaris 11.1. I plan to explore some of these enhancements in a series of blog entries. Meanwhile, I've published a copy of the lab materials, which you can try out with this new release.

• Fresh Install of SQL Server 2008 doesn't install managment studio. Help!

  Ok I am running Windows 7, 64 bit. I cleaned of SQL server 2005 completely off my system leaving only SQL Compact Edition. I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=01af61e6-2f63-4291-bcad-fd500f6027ff&displaylang=en and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Edition Service Pack 1. After the install, under my start bar menu all i have for SQL configuration tools are the Configuration Manager, Error and Usage Reporting and the Install Center. I don't have the SQL Managment Studio. So I went here http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=08e52ac2-1d62-45f6-9a4a-4b76a8564a2b&displaylang=en and downloaded the SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express but when I try to install it I get a warning says This program has known compatibility issues and that I need to Install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. I thought that is what I installed. So, I tried to continue running the install but I then get an error message that says Invoke or BeginInvoke can not be called on a Form before it is opened... How can I check if Service pack 1 is installed or not? What should I do?
