• how much time does grid.py take to run ?

  Hello all , I am using libsvm for binary classification.. I wanted to try grid.py , as it is said to improve results.. But i dont understand what the above GNUplots / warnings convey .. Should i re-run them ? • Chaining animations and memory management

  Hey Everyone, Got a question. I have a subclassed UIView that is acting as my background where I am scrolling the ground. The code is working really nice and according to the Instrumentation, I am not leaking nor is my created and still living Object allocation growing. I have discovered else where in my application that adding an animation to a UIImageView that is owned by my subclassed UIView seems to bump up my retain count and removing all animations when I am done drops it back down. My question is this, when you add an animation to a layer with a key, I am assuming that if there is already a used animation in that entry position in the backing dictionary that it is released and goes into the autorelease pool? I am assuming everytime I add an animation the one that exists in that key position is released. Just wondering I am correct. Also, I am relatively new to Core Animation. • Writing Device Drivers for Microcontrollers, where to define IO Port pins?

  I always seem to encounter this dilemma when writing low level code for MCU's. I never know where to declare pin definitions so as to make the code as reusable as possible. In this case Im writing a driver to interface an 8051 to a MCP4922 12bit serial DAC. Im unsure how/where I should declare the pin definitions for The CS(chip select) and LDAC(data latch) for the DAC. At the moment there declared in the header file for the driver. Iv done a lot of research trying to figure out the best approach but havent really found anything. Im basically want to know what the best practices... if there are some books worth reading or online information, examples etc, any recommendations would be welcome.   I am trying to pass json encoded values from a php script to a, GnuBookTest.js, javascript file that initiates a Bookreader object and use the values i have passed in via the variable i named "result". The other browsers just do not load the Bookreader and show the "x" instead, like they did not get the values from the php script. Where is the problem?

• XSLT Stylesheet works with a vbs script, but not Perl

  I have a program that is essentially a search application, and it exists in both VBScript and Perl form (I'm trying to make an executable with a GUI). Currently the search application outputs an HTML file, and if a section of text in the HTML is longer than twelve lines then it hides anything after that and includes a clickable More... tag. This is done in XSLT and works with VBScript. I literally copied and pasted the stylesheet into the Perl program that I'm using and it does everything right except for the More... tag. Is there any reason why it would be working with the VBScript but not Perl? • EF4 Import/Lookup thousands of records - my performance stinks!

  I'm trying to setup something for a movie store website (using ASP.NET, EF4, SQL Server 2008), and in my scenario, I want to allow a "Member" store to import their catalog of movies stored in a text file containing ActorName, MovieTitle, and CatalogNumber as follows: Actor, Movie, CatalogNumber John Wayne, True Grit, 4577-12 (repeated for each record) This data will be used to lookup an actor and movie, and create a "MemberMovie" record, and my import speed is terrible if I import more than 100 or so records using these tables: Actor Table: Fields = {ID, Name, etc.} Movie Table: Fields = {ID, Title, ActorID, etc.} MemberMovie Table: Fields = {ID, CatalogNumber, MovieID, etc.} My methodology to import data into the MemberMovie table from a text file is as follows (after the file has been uploaded successfully): Create a context. For each line in the file, lookup the artist in the Actor table. For each Movie in the Artist table, lookup the matching title. If a matching Movie is found, add a new MemberMovie record to the context and call ctx.SaveChanges(). The performance of my implementation is terrible. My expectation is that this can be done with thousands of records in a few seconds (after the file has been uploaded), and I've got something that times out the browser. My question is this: What is the best approach for performing bulk lookups/inserts like this? Should I call SaveChanges only once rather than for each newly created MemberMovie? Would it be better to implement this using something like a stored procedure? I am not sure how to fix this issue. would it be better if I use an IDE like Eclipse or NetBeans and create a real Java "web app" so that everything can be "self-configured" by the usage of a web.config XML configuration file?   I have a project using libavcodec (ffmpeg). I'm using it to encode MPEG-2 video at 4:2:2 Profile, Main Level. I have the pixel format PIX_FMT_YUV422P selected in the AVCodecContext, however the video output I'm getting has all the colours wrong, and looks to me like the encoder is incorrectly reading the buffers as though it thinks it is 4:2:0 chroma rather than 4:2:2.   Hello: I have an extremely bizzare situation: I have a function in MATLAB which calls three other main functions and produces two figures for me. The function reads in an input jpeg image, crops it, segments it using kmeans clustering, and outputs 2 figures to the screen - the original image and the clustered image with the cluster centers indicated. When I run this function on a particular image, I get 3 clusters (which is not what I expect to get). When I run the following commands from the MATLAB command prompt: >> img = imread('..\images\texture\1.jpg'); >> img = crop_image(img); >> segment_image(img); then the first image that is displayed by segment_image is the same as when I run the function (so I know that the clustering is done on the same image) but the number of clusters is 16 (which is what I expect). In fact, when I run my process_database_images() function on my entire image database, EVERY image is evaluated to have 3 clusters (this is a problem), whereas when I test some images individually, I get in the range of 12-16 clusters, which is what I prefer and expect. Why is there such a discrepancy? Am I having some syntax bug in my process_database_images() function? If more code is required from me (i.e. segment_images function, or crop_image function), please let me know. Thanks.

• Consolidating coding styles: Funcs, private method, single method classes

  Hi all, We currently have 3 devs with, some, conflicting styles and I'm looking for a way to bring peace to the kingdom... The Coders: Foo 1: Likes to use Func's & Action's inside public methods. He uses actions to alias off lengthy method calls and Func's to perform simple tasks that can be expressed in 1 or 2 lines and will be used frequently through out the code Pros: The main body of his code is succinct and very readable, often with only one or 2 public methods per class and rarely any private methods. Cons: The start of methods contain blocks of lambda rich code that other developers don't enjoy reading; and, on occasion, can contain higher order functions that other dev's REALLY don't like reading. Foo 2: Likes to create a private method for (almost) everything the public method will have to do . Pros: Public methods remain small and readable (to all developers). Cons: Private methods are numerous. With private methods that call into other private methods, that call into... etc, etc. Making code hard to navigate. Foo 3: Likes to create a public class with a, single, public method for every, non-trivial, task that needs performing, then dependency inject them into other objects. Pros: Easily testable, easy to understand (one object, one responsibility). Cons: project gets littered by classes, opening multiple class files to understand what code does makes navigation awkward. It would be great to take the best of all these techniques... Foo-1 Has really nice, readable (almost dsl-like) code... for the most part, except for all the Action and Func lambda shenanigans bulked together at the start of a method. Foo-3 Has highly testable and extensible code that just feels a bit "belt-&-braces" for some solutions and has some code-navigation niggles (constantly hitting F12 in VS and opening 5 other .cs files to find out what a single method does). And Foo-2... Well I'm not sure I like anything about the one-huge .cs file with 2 public methods and 12 private ones, except for the fact it's easier for juniors to dig into. I admit I grossly over-simplified the explanations of those coding styles; but if any one knows of any patterns, practices or diplomatic-manoeuvres that can help unite our three developers (without just telling any of them to just "stop it!") that would be great. From a feasibility standpoint : Foo-1's style meets with the most resistance due to some developers finding lambda and/or Func's hard to read. Foo-2's style meets with a less resistance as it's just so easy to fall into. Foo-3's style requires the most forward thinking and is difficult to enforce when time is short. Any ideas on some coding styles or conventions that can make this work?

• MATLAB: different function returns from command line and within function

  Hello: I have an extremely bizzare situation: I have a function in MATLAB which calls three other main functions and produces two figures for me. The function reads in an input jpeg image, crops it, segments it using kmeans clustering, and outputs 2 figures to the screen - the original image and the clustered image with the cluster centers indicated. When I run this function on a particular image, I get 3 clusters (which is not what I expect to get). When I run the following commands from the MATLAB command prompt: >> img = imread('..\images\texture\1.jpg'); >> img = crop_image(img); >> segment_image(img); then the first image that is displayed by segment_image is the same as when I run the function (so I know that the clustering is done on the same image) but the number of clusters is 16 (which is what I expect). In fact, when I run my process_database_images() function on my entire image database, EVERY image is evaluated to have 3 clusters (this is a problem), whereas when I test some images individually, I get in the range of 12-16 clusters, which is what I prefer and expect. Why is there such a discrepancy? Am I having some syntax bug in my process_database_images() function? If more code is required from me (i.e. segment_images function, or crop_image function), please let me know. Thanks.

  I have looked at many examples for validating an XML file against a DTD, but have not found one that allows me to use a proxy. • Importing a large delimited file to a MySQL table

  I have this large (and oddly formatted txt file) from the USDA's website. It is the NUT_DATA.txt file. But the problem is that it is almost 27mb! I was successful in importing the a few other smaller files, but my method was using file_get_contents which it makes sense why an error would be thrown if I try to snag 27+ mb of RAM. So how can I import this massive file to my MySQL DB without running into a timeout and RAM issue? I've tried just getting one line at a time from the file, but this ran into timeout issue. Using PHP 5.2.0. Here is the old script (the fields in the DB are just numbers because I could not figure out what number represented what nutrient, I found this data very poorly document.   I posted this back in May on the [android-developers] Google Group. I never heard back and was not able to reproduce the problem until one of my students did last week. I figured I'd post it here and see if it rang any bells for anyone. The database is definitely open. The SQLiteClosable is the SQLiteQuery created by SQLiteQueryDriver, and I see no evidence that there is an object pool or something going on here that might explain how a "new" SQLiteClosable is already closed. The fact that it is sporadic (meaning the same UI operations sometimes trigger the exception, but not always) suggests some sort of pool, race condition, or something...but I'm not sure where. Thoughts? Thanks! UPDATE: The code in question is from the LunchList tutorials out of my Android Programming Tutorials book. It's a bit spread out and not terribly suitable for posting directly in SO. You can download the code for that book from the above link if you want to take a look at it. I do not recall exactly which edition of the tutorial the student was working on at the time, though it was in the Tutorial 12-Tutorial 16 range. At this point, i understand there is an error in the ApplyRequestValues Phases which is very early and so the previous state is restored and nothing changes. What I don't understand is that in order to fufill the condition for rendering "item.typeA" that object has to be an instance of TypeA. But here, it looks like that object passed the condition even though it was an instance of TypeB. It is like it is evaluating the inner dataTable (InnerItems) before evaluating the outer (outerItems). My working assumption is that I just don't understand how/when the rendered attribute is actually evaluated.

• How can you make an emacs macro wait for cscope query results?

  I am trying to write a macro which calls cscope-find-functions-calling-this-function on each and every tag in a file displayed in the *Tags List* buffer (created by list-tags command). This should create a buffer which contains list of all functions calling a set of functions defined in a certain file. This is the sequence of keystrokes: 1. <f11> ;; cscope-find-functions-calling-this-function 2. RET ;; newline [shows results of cscope in a split window] 3. C-x C-p ;; mark-page 4. C-x C-x ;; icicle-exchange-point-and-mark 5. <up> ;; previous-line 6. <end> ;; end-of-line [region to copy has been marked] 7. <f7> ;; append-results-to-buffer 8. C-x ESC O ;; [move back to split window on the right] 9. C-x b ;; icicle-buffer [Switch back to *Tags List* buffer] 10. *Tags ;; self-insert-command * 5 11. SPC ;; self-insert-command 12. List* ;; self-insert-command * 5 13. RET ;; newline 14 . <down> ;; next-line [Position point on next tag in the list] Problem: I get no results in the buffer, and I found out that's because Step 3-7 execute even before cscope prints the results of query made on Steps 1-2. I can insert a pause in the macro by using C-x q, but I'd rather like the macro to wait after Step 2, until cscope has returned with the results and only then continue further. I suspect this is not possible through a macro, maybe a LISP function... I'm not a lisp expert myself. Can someone please help? Thanks! Details: I have Icicles installed so by default I get word at point in current buffer as input in minibuffer. F11 is bound to cscope-find-functions-calling-this-function windmove is installed and C-x (C-x ESC o - as shown below) takes you to the right window. F7 is bound to append-results-to-buffer which is defined as: (defun append-results-to-buffer () (interactive) (append-to-buffer (get-buffer-create "c1") (point) (mark))) This function just appends the currently marked region to a buffer named "c1".
